View Full Version : Tom Cruise
I was curious about how Tom Cruise's recent turn for the crazy has influenced people's desires to see his movies. I must say I think he's so nuts that it actually has reduced my desire to see MI:3. Not that I was going to rush out and see it, but I did enjoy the first one (second was balls and part of John Woo's, "Now I suck!" phase) and Philip Seymour Hoffman added a little credibility to it...
But, seriously, fuck this guy. All these images of his crazy massive psycho smile/forced laugh are getting to me. He looks like the fucking joker.
So, question is? Do you, as a movie goer, care?

I don't really follow what he does. has he always been crazy or is this recent?
I loved the first two movies so i'll be seeing this one also. probably when it hits dvd though. The first one was way cooler but the second one has a kickass motorcycle scene with a triumph speed triple so it makes up for it.

ha ha good.
it seems like he's gone off the deep end recently. not sure if that's true.
This http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLnxcKV8RJ8&search=tom%20cruise made me shit my pants but it was better without the title.

MI:3 just makes me shrug my shoulders and say 'meh'. The guy is a nut now. That aside he did turn in a good performance in Collateral and Magnolia. But MI:3 just seems like action by numbers with nothing really new to the table. Sure Phil Hoffman is in it, but I bet he was far more menacing and intimidating in his few scenes in Punch-Drunk Love than he will be in the entire film Mission Impossible 3.
At this point I'm really sick of hearing about it and seeing ads for it when I am out and about. From what little TV I watch it seems impossible to go through a commercial break without seeing an ad for MI:3. I just don't care. I don't really remember anything from the first one other than the chewing gum being thrown on that aquarium window and Cruise running from gallons of water and the second film featuring Tom Cruise hair, plus a motor cycle.
Yeah, I think that's part of my interest in him, was that Magnolia made me ready to give the guy mad respect, and then he turned super-flakey almost immediately. Now he's borderline psycho.
I don't watch tv at all, though, so I've seen the ad for it twice, I think.

He's quite eccentric. And being super-religious, if scientology is a real religion, makes for people going nutty.
I'm gonna catch it just for the fuck-off explosions and whatever but the clips I've seen of an out-of-control Hoffman as the bad guy don't make for a spy-flick villain, in my opinion.

Yeah, seeing Tom Cruise, heartthrob to many shout out "Respect the COCK and tame the CUNT!" seemed to get people's attention. That and he was a mysognist in the film too. And it's a damn fine film.
You'd be suprised how even just one half hour of TV of watching a new episode of the The Simpsons each week is tainted by Mission Impossible 3 ads.

I never was a big Tom Cruise fan before he went insane, and I doubt that will change now. But the whole supposed South Park thing and the weirdness with Katie Holmes and their child has really killed my interest in his movies. I probably couldn't watch a movie of his now without thinking of the craziness he's done over the past year. I think many people are turned off by him now (I know a few of my coworkers certainly are), but I don't know how that will affect MI:3 since that's an action franchise. So yeah, to hell with the nut.

I don't really care about Cruise's antics in private life, it's the movies that count for me...
And he's had a fair share of ones i really like (mainly cos he's worked with great directors)
Haven't seen M:I:III yet though. But i prolly will.

Cruise is a now a full blown loony, but he plays characters on movie, so its whats up there that counts...although i do have trouble believing sometimes that Cruise is some kinda superhero action man as in MI:III (or however you write it) - he's more at home in Vanilla Sky type roles for me...
i know there are a few ads etc about around for this, but i do think this movie kinda snuck up on everyone...there was none of the hype that the previous two Mission movies had...
i admire Cruise for the fact he acknowledges his fans, but i can also see why he's now getting on people's tits...the sofa jumping stuff, scientology bollocks...but at least he's happy, out there and making movies...there are not many movie stars like him about to be honest - most take their money and hide in their mansions and only com out when the need to...
but like ffolkes said, its what he produces on movie that counts, and whatever he does outside of that is his own business, although it may well reflect on who actually goes to see his movies....the nuttier he gets the more likely people will avoid his work, but he must know what he's doing...Mr Hubbard must have planned all this for him ;)

i agree. Even though Cruise may be going a bit extreme, show me one movie star who isn't pretty much crazy fucked up in the head. If the movie's is decent I'm not going to go "well I guess the movie's is good but i gotta hate it cause Tom Cruise is in it"

I don't have a problem with loony movie stars, but watching the wealth of Cruise's interviews, publicity footage, etc over the last couple of years, he just seems to have crossed the line into twatdom.
When that British TV crew squirted him with water (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/film/4121008.stm) at last Summer's WotW premiere, it felt like the whole nation went "Yeeeeeesss!!!!" There are plenty of comparable A-list movie stars who we'd never have felt that about -but with Cruise, it's like he needs to be brought down a peg or two!
It probably won't put me off seeing films of his that I want to see, but it does mean I increasingly get irritated by his appearance in them.

Well what happened is he fired his long-time manager/agent/etc (this older lady) and hired his sister(?!?!)........after that his first appearance was Oprah and the rest is history. I blame the sister.
His movies are great however, with Vanilla Sky being one of my favorite all time classics. Samurai, Minority, WotW, and Collat. were all great much in part to his screen presence and overall acting range. As far as I'm concerned, he's on the biggest string of grade A hits I've ever seen from a leading man. As long as the wacko Scientology doesn't creep it's way into his career choices (Travolta-Battlefield Earth style) then I'll keep watching his movies.
On a side note, the "buzz" is that MI3 is really, really good and the best of the MI's (not saying much there though). I might drag my lazy ass to a theater..........:)
I guess I would be more comfortable with thinking, "what he believes is his own business," if it weren't for:
a)the anti-psychiatry rant
b)him flexing his muscle against South Park
He's making it our business.
Fuck yes, adam.
Fuck that looney.
I hereby boycott any Cruise film (that isn't Magnolia) from now untill the galactic warlord is dethroned and our emeter readings return to base zero.
Last time I checked, a Tomato was experiencing more pain then me.

He's always been a little looney, but I don't let that stop me from seeing his films (that is, the ones that I want to see). Not much of a fan really, and I'm not interested in the third installment of Mission Impossible because the second one was horrible.
Granted he's a weird guy, but that doesn't have much to do with his acting career, which is all we should really care about when we go to the movies.
