View Full Version : Underneath The Radar
I just came across a promo vinyl copy of Underneath The Radar circa 1988 on Sire Records. Is it desirable? Karl looks pretty funny I must say.

Hell yeah! I used to like that album quite a bit, although I can barely listen to it anymore. Four of the songs...the title track, "Glory! Glory!", "The God Song", and of course "I Need a Doctor" all got reeeeally stuck in my head for a while. If it's cheap I'd say pick it up! I don't know what happened to the other members of the band but I know Karl is pretty embarassed by the stuff now!
Although if you can find any of the old Freur stuff...that's even better!

You said it! It's worth having to see their roots and appreciate how much UW and musical tastes in general have changed since the late 80's. But i can't make it through this album without hitting the FF. "Change the Weather" is more accessible to me, for some reason.
Just as an aside, i know that UTR was a modest hit in Australia or somesuch, and CTW was pretty much a sales disappointment. i wonder if these albums have sold more in latter years because now people know/care about UW and maybe some folks think it'll be electronic dance music? It'd be interesting to see statistics on sales by year. i'm guessing a slow but steady rise!;)

I remember when I was first getting into Underworld, my local shop had a copy of UTR in the Underworld section. I kept looking at it everytime I went in and wondering, "is it them? The art's so different. The eighties! they weren't around then. Who's this band and are they mad that someone better's using their name?"

as numberonesuperfan i obviously have UTR and all early UW releases, its totally different to the 'mark II ' era, and its really only worth getting if you accept that its not sounding anyway similar to todays modern 'electronic' styled offerings, although you can hear Karl's lovely vocals and lyrics.
But i'd say buy it mostly because of the cover art, although depends on which promo it is it may not have cover art, but any early underworld releases are well worth buying simply for the images of Karl and Rick wearing very very dodgy outfits (it was the 80's! you cry - thats not a decent enough excuse! - well worth checking out)
only in the very late 1990 demos can you hear influences that will lean to the Underworld we know of...so listening to UTR now sounds very dated, but as nostalgic value its worth its weight in gold, afterall this is where R&K's roots are...
