Heyall.. I'm gonna be providing some grooves to the 'mcmaster society for theatre and film and the performing arts semi formal and drammies' event that's comin' up. I get to do it cause i'd do it for free. And I want to do it, because i think my taste in music is better than everyone else's :p

I'm trying to lean more toward generally palattable stuff because these will be folks that often don't hear good music and if they dance it's to top 40. so i want to provide them with a good primer on 'real' dance music, but not scare them the fuck away right off the bat (and 10 minute tracks might not go over super well either hehe).

so i gotta think what is the best UW track to play..

i'll be probably doing this from a computer which precludes much real mixing either.. so i dunno. suggestions? (feel free to suggest stuff other than UW too.. but i wanna have at least one track by 'em!)

If it needs to be kept around the 5-6 minute mark, then I say Jumbo. It's strong lyrically as well as musically. Plus everyone loves Jumbo, and if they don't, they should. :)

Failing that, the single edit of Pearls Girl clocks in at 4:24, and would kick their top-40 loving ass all over the dancefloor.

Born Slippy .NUXX (4:20 edit) ;)

or what about...
Kittens!!!
Two Months Off
Born Slippy original

and if you want to scare them off choose Dogman Go Woof or Luetin.

For slow groovin', how about "Sola Sistem"? Maybe even "Ballet Lane" or "Twist" could work...open their musical minds!

Of course, for dancefloor mayhem, maybe edits/remixes of "King of Snake", "TMO" or even "Moaner"...

Some non-UW dance tracks that may excite? its a fact that people respond to the hits, so these aren't very creative, but they won't scare people off the floor, in fact they usually cause riot-like dancing:

"Superstyling" or "I See You Baby (Fatboy Slim mix)" by Groove Armada
"Praise You" or "rockafella skank" by Fatboy Slim (drop the edit of "Rockafella", because in my experience, people can't handle the tempo change and acid squelches in the middle of the LP version!)
"Go" or "Bodyrock" by Moby
"Block Rockin' beats", "Hey Boy, Hey Girl" or "Setting Sun" by Chemical Brothers

All good tracks, though maybe overplayed, but you gotta start somewhere!

Mmmmmmmoooanerrrrrrrr! Last track, of course.

While you're at it, put in Rez/Cowgirl somewhere, maybe for starters (the Bootleg Babies version) and at the end. Ah, wait, there's Moaner already. Zut! Ok, make it two endings. Simple as that!

Kittens won't harm either (I'm talking about the song here).

I think Cowgirl is the most immediately likeable UW track, but really I think any will do. I found that UW is very accessible to new audiences.

probably something like moaner yeah i hate that but does well on the dancefloor hits like pearls girl and born slippy might do well might go with kittens too but avoid slow tracks like jumbo or sola sistem even though we like them these arent uw fans so avoid anything like that,,,,,,

i'd say .nuxx would work as most know it, and tmo would be also a good choice...

think moaner would be bad as it's not too accessable, and different... kittens too

does anyone have a shortish edit of born slippy they could share? ysi/email (damuma(at)gmail(dot)com). i'd like to play that and i know there's some trainspotting fans (one of the plays at the summer drama festival is gonna be trainspotting, so it would be appropos, too)

i think moaner is a little too dissonant to go over well.. heh.

If you don't mind a 13 minute song, use my Rez/Cowgirl mix! :D

Start off with Mmm Skyscraper I Love You since I think the vocals might grab people more. I'd throw in Cowgirl somewhere in the middle, maybe a little Two Months Off, and I agree with Moaner.

I'm kinda considering throwing on Jal to Tokyo (edited from the lovely broken thing mp3).. it's shortish and fairly accessible I think.

Just fire up the European Club Gig and yer done ;) .

Born Slippy.NUXX is pretty obvious. Once you get the party going (which is very hard though), you can get away with a lot of 4/4 UW tracks; Think Cowgirl/Rez/KoS/Push/Moaner. Songs I wouldn't play if I were you; Kittens or Pearls Girl, for example.

EDIT; But let me warn you; Pay close attention to the crowd. A lot of ppl do not care about good music and just want to hang out with friends. They won't like it if you force your musical taste down their throat.

Just a warning :) .

I think it depends on what part of the set you are thinking of dropping stuff.

Pig and Dan's mix of Play Pig strikes a perfect note for early/mid-set imo. Setting the right tone, getting the atmosphere building.

The "classics" like Nuxx/Cowgirl/Pearls Girl need to be more towards the end of a set, when everyone is up and going for it. Moaner would make a superb finale (as indeed it does live)

Yeah, "Jumbo" would probably go over better than anything else. You could also try "Cups," because it starts out nice and easy but then the kids can jump around a little at the end.

"MMM Skyscraper I Love You" might work. People who aren't well-versed in the ways of techno might not get a few parts, but the ending will go over really well, I think. "Dark Train" is very good for dancing, but also not very dissonant, and contains a truly amazing keyboard line, so they might like that.
