View Full Version : How many wants the UW Live in Tokyo 2005 CD's?

We are trying to find out how many copies should be listed on ebay for the next batch, trying to put it in the hand of most dirties as possible.
They will be at the same price, available worldwide. Will drop you a note here once they go on sale.
;)
:p
i'm one of the lucky few who already got 1, but this is totally cool!

I got one of the original 10 but this is an excellent idea. Worldwide postage. Biz/BrotherLovesDub's copy seems to have been lost by UK post becuase of this UK only policy :(

...was it available to only those in the UK? seriously?!?
then I won't be able to buy one... hopefully someone could hook me up? and I'd have to figure out what the f*ck happened with my paypal account...

I'd definitely love one, but I don't like my chances of being online and actively checking dirty/ebay for the ten minutes that the auction would last for. :(
I didn't get one either...
Regarding shipping to other countries, i thought they'd simply add a few pounds to the price? Where there any other problems with shipping to other countries (like Germany;))?

why ebay? why ebay when they have a site set up to sell books and shirt etc?

because there'd be hundreds of people lurking the place to find out when and where and snatch them all up for ebay reselling.
i dont see how this can be fairly distributed outside of private messaging, which is isnt terribly reasonable to expect.

I guess.... or - well. they could just send out an email to memebers and like give a code to access a section of the UW live page.
Sure - you'd still have to 'compete' with every member... but at least - it'd ONLY be dirties that would be able to get the discs - as they'd get the forwarded/blanket email
and that would be easy
- and this was done before - sort of when Bowie played his shows at the Roseland Ballroom. Everyone that was a member of his webpage got a chance at two tickets, and it was first come / first serve, but only members

would this only be ebay uk? imuh bit confused here.
why can't we sell them on Dirty.org to the people that want them? why do we have to go through Ebay? why bother asking how many to list when you can just hit us up directly here?
why the round-about method of distribution?
:/

If I might make a suggestion... Put them up on eBay with a pretty vague description (or at least a pretty vague title) and then post here with exact details on the title/description so that people here definitely have a shot at them.

It could be that eBay is the only route that comfortably fits with the way that they were originally offered (to the concertgoers)?
It doesn't matter how they get out, really, as long as they end up in the hands of the hardcore dirty.org UW fans who've been longing for them. :)

i think the problems lies in the fact that once they go up on ebay for $15, unless you are actively checking dirty, you have a VERY low chance at getting one. Its only gonna take one person to realize they are available and buy 4 or 5 of them.
are we going through Ebay just for ease of payment handling?

If you put up a title something like "Underworld Souvenir Copies" (or, even better, "Dirty.Org Concert Souvenirs") with a description along the lines of:
An original audio memento from the first Nipponese festival performance in 2005 of the artists responsible for the Riverrun Project, recorded on three digital compact discs.
then it's likely that your average eBay user (and, more importantly, your average eBay profiteer) won't catch on until after they've all been purchased by Dirty.Org users.
I'd just rather not see it held up because there isn't a ready alternative to selling them through eBay. Adding more e-commerce choices to a web site is much easier said than done.

I did read Yannicks original post, which is why i asked my question. Sooo it appears that we are using ebay. it also appears that the goal is to get them in the hands of Dirts. Sooo why in the hell would we use ebay when we could just do a dirt-direct sale? why add the middleman in? it seems to me that a lot of people would like to purchase these cds yet are not so thrilled about sitting by dirty.org refreshing just to get an advance notice of when they are released on ebay.

nah man. if they are using ebay, then they could use Paypal, no? i guess i was also thinking about the ecommerce they had set up for the books and tshirts - kinda forgot that its no longer there (is it?)
and just to clarify, i was only asking why we were using ebay. if its the only means to sell these discs, then its all good. although, thats what Paypal is there for if we wanted to do direct sales. just seems kinda silly that we have to await a post about discs goin for sale and then hop over and get em! silly, but also kinda speak-easy-ish. but id take direct over speakeasy :P
I'm also a lucky one who could manage to get the cd's via eBay (the 15£ ones...), but I think the idea of this poll is really nice & showing again (if this was needed...) how cool & careful are R&K for their fans.
Everybody should be happy & thankful for them (and for everybody official/unofficial here & there...).

Couldn't have said it better myself. I was lucky in a right place/right time way too. The fact that they are releasing them at ALL in this way is too awesome for words, never mind that they are now polling to see how many more are needed out there.

to be honest, the fact that i have high-quality rips of these CDs allows me to be more calm about this than my usual manic, collecting self. if i didnt have these rips, id be foaming at the mouth and refreshing ebay like an idiot just hoping to get em. i think what im kinda bummed about with all the new processes is that they are just one-step-less-than annoying. if one more step gets added in, im gonna have to say, 'awfukkit. ill just keep the mp3s'. i'd love to pay for the real deal. already to hear this live show, ive had to:
1) beg to hear it via DirtyRadio only to be shut out of the stream
2) beg to get a link to an ftp site that had the rips (all the while called ungrateful, whiny, greedy and the likes by people that either already had it, or knew they were getting it.)
3) check ebay repeatedly only to see skyrocketing prices
4) check ebay repeatedly only to find nothing
5) signup to be on a list that will be notified when they can then spam-refresh ebay in the hopes that there will be another copy left
6) most likely beg someone to buy two copies so that i can Paypal the other off them.**

i'd "bid" for one, too. but as i still have no paypal, i'd have to tell a call a friend, which means there's a delay and ... :(
i'd like to see the "obscure title" method implemented, that would make my chances bigger :)
and just to clarify, i was only asking why we were using ebay. yes you did ask. four times or so. in one thread... if there's no answer (well, yannick's told us some bits), just try to give it a rest.

yea - what's up with this mention of a 12"?!?!?!?!??!?!?!??!?!
and I'm sorry - but I dont understand what selling them on ebay does? I don't see how that'd stop people from paying rediculous prices on ebay...
I mean - you'd have to either:
A) keep at least one copy continuously on sale for a significant period of time
B) make some (basically) permanent comment about them on (probably both) the dirty homepage and uwlive
but - you'd probably end up having to do both A&B... especially as that wouldn't stop someone from selling it for $100 in like - a year... and you know what - the seller could just say this:
"was only available at the concert or on VERY limited release via UW on ebay..."

your collectors brain is suffocating the part that thinks reasonably.
yannick is messing with you, and it's CRAZY to think such an exclusive, limited run will ever find it's way on vinyl.

Looks like this m-2 guy has another one up for bid on ebay...How did he get so many?
I wonder if this may be the inherent problem trying to sell them to dirts on ebay...others may be snatching them up and exploiting us for price...not sure who can afford the price these end up going for though...the pool has got to be getting thinner.

yup. i know that yan is trying to warn us so that we are the ones that get em, but it seems like a losing battle to me. for each bunch that gets put up on ebay, a certain percentage are gonna go to profiteers. i dont think im gonna play the reload ebay game. if they go for sale on here or paypal, ill be all over them; i really do wanna pay for them being that i listen to the mp3s 5 times a week :P

Argh! Any chance of these going on sale soon? I feel the "ebay reload" battle is the only way I will be able to "stumble" into this set. Been refreshing ebay all day the past 2 days while at work. My luck I'll miss out when I'm away from the computer. I don't see how the requsted # of interested Dirts will all come out with a CD if profiteers will just gobble them up the instant they are made available. Can't there be some special code other than "Underworld live Tokyo" to keep the items "hidden" on eBay so that the Dirts who want them get a fair chance to purchase? <frustrated UW fanatic in the SE US of A>
potatobroth
03-17-2006, 10:59 AM
well the special code isnt the purpose of using ebay. the purpose of using ebay is to make the cds public at their locked in price. so if yer gonna hide em, you might as well just paypal directly to yannick. :) -- which is how i would prefer to do it.

03-17-2006, 11:31 AM
What if they are sold on ebay but use a random series of letter as the item. For example, use "ANDIDBHSY" as the name. Then let us know to search ebay for "ANDIDBHSY" That way no one except some one who reads the boards will know what to look for and dirty.org can still use the services of ebay.
Or even if you want to get real specific, list them each under a seperate random name then PM each person the "code" i.e. random name to buy it. This would be a little more work though.
Either way this would allow for dirty.org readers only as well as inventory control.
Just a thought.

What if they are sold on ebay but use a random series of letter as the item. For example, use "ANDIDBHSY" as the name.
again, the point isnt to hide them on ebay. the point is to make a declaration to would-be resellers that dirty is gonna list these constantly at 15$ a disc fixed rate. so its worthless to buy them up and resell them at 100$ a disc. problem is that, anyone willing to buy them up for resale already knows that its still worth it to buy 5 copies and sell them at a later date. like ive said before, if you want dirts to get them, then sell them directly to dirts. if you wanna stop resellers, then power to ya, but i dont really want to jump through hoops because of them.
charleswise
03-17-2006, 12:01 PM
I was assuming the issue was to find a way to sell the discs to dirty.org readers while using ebay to do so since it has to be the easiest way not only but send payment but also have a set number of discs for sale and being able to have inventory control. I stand corrected.

Haha. Well, actually, it's a private auction, which means all bidder identities are hidden.

If you look at the times and amounts of the bids, it looks a little sketchy. Maybe the bidding is kept private so the seller can drive the price up himself?

never thought about that. are the cds limited supply, or are more being burned/pressed for these auctions?
and to whomever bid on the $100 one, hold off, no? Isnt that the point of Yannick selling them (in)directly to us? It wont do much good if we dirts are buying them from shady dealers.**
**which is why i say, sell em here. screw ebay.
If you look at the times and amounts of the bids, it looks a little sketchy. Maybe the bidding is kept private so the seller can drive the price up himself? Can you do that? That's messed up. I guess it would be easy enough to just create a new id and use it, if nothing else. But damn!

let's just say that is what he's doing because we resent him for getting his hands on so many copies and selling them at inflated prices.
i don't care if that's how ebay works, that guy did something shady to get, by my count, 4 copies of it.
so if he's deliberately inflating the price to generate interest, let him screw himself.

well, if it can be proven that he drove the price up,
he can be removed from ebay..
however, i doubt someone would risk that..
although, they could always come back with
another account...
someone here did bid on and received it,
so i think its a real auction, just private..

oh, yeah, they're all real. if you win you get it...
but no one's been bidding because of this thread, because we know there's more coming and we're letting them know how much should be available, so there's a high chance many of us will be happy with the end result.
so when shit doesnt move for three days the price jumps from 13 to 100 in a matter of hours?

In malfunction5's offer on eBay it says, "One purchase per person only please." Of course, this restriction can't be 100% enforced. Some buyer wrote as feedback, "FANTASTIC PURCHASE PLEASE CONTACT ME IF MORE OF THE SAME AA++."

i wonder if this is a test for future concerts,
to see the viability of releasing them on CD
after the show..
i know there are other groups that have done
it...can it be that expensive?
or is it more of a logistical thing..
some of the more popular groups have
released every concert live they have
had from their previous tours..(erasure,
pearl jam, etc)...and some with just
selected concerts..(duran duran,
depeche mode..)..
would 'everything, everything' have
worked if it was only sold at concerts?

It's not hard to do at all. eBay requires a credit card to activate an account - if the guy is in it with a partner, it would be easy to have his friend bid periodically against others to see what the max is and then retract that bid. It's a very risky thing to do especially if the auctions ends on the eBay account that's his own or his friends. I'm sure eBay logs their bids, but who's to say they would shut this guy down if he's driving sales up when they themselves are making money off that profit... bastards!
At any rate, it's pretty unfair that this Yahoo has so many copies and the real fans here have to sell the clothes off their back to buy one... either that or suffer with poor mp3 quality stream rips if they can find them...
here's to hoping this show is released in the states, as that seems to be the only way we can enjoy live UW. and here's to hoping they'll play in California again...
now playing: "Ghosts Of The Multiple Feature - Love And Rockets"

It's called shill bidding and you have to report them to eBay if you think it's being done. I reported a seller once, after a failed attempt to purchase some dogtags and received a suspicious second chance offer, but they came up clean. So if you really think that's what's happening let eBay know, for all our sake.

I would love for UW to make their live shows available for purchase much in the same manner as one of my favorite bands - Primus. They have all their shows for purchase through their website from the past few tours. You can click a date and see the setlist. Sure they are mp3s, but the sound is great and I've purchased a number of shows from their site. All are direct from the soundboard with just enough crowd noise to make the "live" feel come through without being too distracting. They Might Be Giants has the same service as well.
I've always wanted EE in its entirety. We know "Kittens" & "Rowla" were cut, but were there other songs cut as well?

It went for $113.50 (if indeed it was a legitimate auction), about £65. That's a lot of money but worse for those in the US given the strong pound.

I believe that its all going ahead, how I don't know. Waiting for Danielle to pick up the box(es) of CDs I believe. You're not going anywhere, the CDs arent being sold elsewhere so I'm sure you can wait a while longer, as most of you will have copies to listen to from the radio or mp3s obtained via P2P.
Mine has been delivered to the UK to my parents place so I havent got mine yet either!

It's not having to wait that's the problem -- it's not knowing what's going to happen.
Some of us have put in a lot of effort constantly monitoring eBay to be able to get one of the CD sets, only to have repeatedly missed out earlier because we weren't sitting in front of our computer right when the auctions started. So we are now (understandably, I think) paranoid that we'll log onto the forums here tomorrow (or the next day, or the next) only to discover that we've missed out on the Tokyo sets again (and possibly for the last time), because we had no warning and were at work or asleep or whatever when they were made available.
I think we all very much appreciate the effort to get the CDs into the hands of the hardcore UW fans here, but waiting around on pins and needles without a clue, frankly, sucks.
(I realize that this isn't an easy problem to solve, since there are people out there who might try to grab CDs just to resell them for a profit if they get wind of how they'll be sold, but even some definite statement that we'll be given X hours or days notice via PM or some other route before they go on sale would help a great deal.)

The only way PM's would work instead of sitting at the comp checking D.org:PM's all day would be to an approx. date/time of when they would be released.
or... just sell them to us outright via paypal and make happy dirts :D
