Those who have played We Love Katamari or Katamari Damacy will know what I'm talking about, this stuff is incredible!!
Its like nothing else I've ever heard, I downloaded the soundtrack the other day and have been zipping about town with it bleeping and tooting its beautiful japanese-ness out of my car constantly for the last week. Its completely crap and stupid sounding but its just FUN and you cant understand any words other than Katamari so all you can do is just sing along in stupid random noises.
You know when you finally find something new or interesting in music that you just know is going to lead you into a whole load of new exciting stuff, thats how this feels, I dont get that much anymore, the last time was with that old genius Kate Bush but this time I have NO IDEA what to start with and since Dirty has given me so many good recommendations in the past I thought someone here must know a bit? Im looking for weird japanese music basically, I dont know what, j-pop probably, not hiphop or shitty dance stuff. I want weird noises and happy shrieking voices!

The best I've done so far is Dokaka who was on Bjorks Medulla so some of you probably know him but he hasnt actually made any albums.
Download this, its one of his tracks from We Love Katamari. Fucking awesome:

So.....any recommendations?

"Weird noises and happy shrieking voices" ... a passion of mine! The Katamari soundtrack is fairly representative of current Japanese laptop pop. I'd recommend these (hopefully the original poster is still kicking around these parts):

PINE*am - Pull the Rabbit Ears and Playing Intense Neural Electronica
YMCK - Family Music
Macdonald Duck Eclair - Short Short and The Genesis Songbook
EeL - Little Prince
Plus-Tech Squeeze Box - Fakevox
Hazel Nuts Chocolate - Cute

Be warned, not everyone's cup of tea. Especially not in the morning. :D

I remember this thread from way back...but daaaaamn, I just found the first Katamari soundtrack and it's one of the freshest, most original discs I've ever heard. Simply brilliant stuff, and no "na, nananananana, katamari damaciiiiii" won't leave my head either.

I "na, nananananana, katamari damaciiiiii" won't leave my head either.

spam: i did a little mashup of sorts with that in my recent Solid Steel mix (which can be found in the tunes section at www.djriko.com (http://www.djriko.com))

Yeah im still around these parts, I used to be quite a heavy poster some years ago before the weight of the world crushed my spirit for argument :)
I still lurk.... but Im pretty much relegated to internet stalker status nowadays.

Thank you SO MUCH for the recommendations though! I downloaded a few examples of those, pretty much exactly the kind of thing i was hoping for :D

Everyone (and i mean EVERYONE!) i have played this stuff to just loves it, i've got a few people obsessed with it too, anyone who hasnt listened to this stuff just give it a try this is incredible, like nothing u've ever listened to before.

And if you have any more tips- keep em coming!

I'm so glad you like the music Downtown! I can't believe this music hasn't received more attention, though perhaps it is a bit obscure.

Some other recommendations:

Plus-Tech Squeeze Box - Cartoom! (I now prefer this to their debut)
Hazel Nuts Chocolate - Bewitched!
Strawberry Machine - Crazy Kilt (Seems to feature remixes from many of the aforementioned artists)
Sonic Coaster Pop - Super Miracle Circuit
Various Artists - Sonido Uzumaki
YMCK - Family Racing

EeL also has a considerable back catalogue, though I've as yet been unable to hear most of it. Happy listening!

I'll be checkin some of those out too...I don't have a whole lot of Japanese music, but I really like it. Here's a tip for ya...if you like that song "The Moon and the Prince", then check out Rip Slyme, the premier J-rap group...they fucking rule...imagine American rap if it was funk-based instead of synth-based, the songs a lot more upbeat, and the lyrics incomprehensible (which is really a good thing).
