The DM Site (http://www.depechemode.com/playingtheangel/index.html#sufferwell) says rather confusingly thats its out 6th March AND 20th March.

I kinda got the impression that they're releasing them almost in 'installments' kinda like w/ the Enjoy the Silence remixes from last year - where there was like a 'limited' version that came out later

It seems that the CD/DVD formats (i.e. charts) are out 6th and the vinyl (non-charting) is out the 20th. What I missed was that there is an extra track on the DVD:
Suffer Well (Alter Ego Dub)
Official list below and it looks like the bastards are milking it by making you buy all the formats to get all 14 tracks. The Darkest Star remix is only on promo (picture disc 7" and on test pressing). I believe there are another couple of unreleased remixes of The Darkest Star floating around also by "holden" (our holden? i dont think so), on a promo 12" (PXL12Bong37). BTW, Suffer Well was co-written by Dave Gahan.

You know that they're gonna release remastered CD's as well? First on the list are Speak & Spell, Music for the Masses and Violator.
http://remasters.depechemode.com/
The Darkest Star Monolake remix that i wanted the most isn't on the promo.. How is it? Is it as good as i think it can be? ;)

on one hand, i actually like this album,
its a throwback to their earlier days ('black celebration')
much more emphasis on the keyboards..
but this is one group i'm not keeping up with
all the releases...i think there's been , what
3 singles so far, all with a lot of promos and
remixes on each of them...
i think i'll wait until they're more manageable
to get them...but i do like this single..
as far as the remasters for the albums go..
why don't they release them in chronological
order? i don't really care for any of the latter
ones...especially after 'black celebration'..
also, i see they put 5.1 mixes of the albums on
there along with a few selected mixes, i would
rather have had ALL the releases/b-sides/etc,
like they did with each of the boxsets...theres
plenty of space on the dvd..
i don't really care for surround sound versions
of albums...(well for one, i don't have a system
that supports it)....but i think its overkill for now..

I think the idea is to release 5.1 versions and add the B-sides that were around at the time to the discs. If you want all the mixes then buy the singles box sets. However, unless you want 5.1 I dont see much value here. I suppose theyve been remastered for stereo though as well so I'll have to take a listen somehow. I dont want to buy them again if theres not much difference.
negative1
02-28-2006, 02:03 PM
well, i do usually get remasters from most groups
just for the extra tracks...however, i might pass
this time...
i don't have a sound system that would take
advantage of them...however, i know that
some of the original pressings came out ages
ago, and very probably analog-> digital mastering
whereas now its all digital -> digital
i heard quite on difference on all the single greatest
hits releases, and 3cd release of the remix set had
really good mastering...but as far as the latter albums
go, i don't think there would be much of a difference..
i was trying to point out, that since they had a DVD
storage to work with, how hard would it have been
to also include all the mixes, etc on there, and leave
out some of the other surround sound versions..
i notice that theres going to be 3 versions
-cd+SACD (who uses this format?)
-collectors SACD version (again, who uses that format?)+DVD
-normal cd+DVD version (i hope this is not the dualdisc format)
i think they could have done a better job
with the formats...thats all..

What a great album.

yea... that's prolly one of the only albums I'll actually get in this remastered format (and finally buy 'Music for the Masses')
I know a lot of people will get pissed at me saying this, but...
I actually prefer their output from Violator onward overall than their earlier albums. I mean - there's some incredible tracks from the previous albums, but again... it's just some great "tracks" and not necessarily albums.
I understand them not putting on the remixes, esp as those boxsets are still easy to get, especially as all of them are on iTunes, but I would've hoped that maybe some outtakes could be added onto the albums, but whatever, you know?

For me BC started it all too. SGR was ok-ish in places but still a little primitive. MTFM and V are DM at their peak. SOFAD took me a long time to get into but I like it a lot now. Ultra has some great tracks but its patchy (although the people they got to remix those tracks was inspired). Exciter was a bit of a let down but the new one is a return to form. I'm not bothered about putting tracks from the box sets on these releases tho, but some demos would have been nice. AFAIK, the "harmonium mix" of Enjoy The Silence was the demo.

unfortunately, I don't think this is going to happen. "Pain I'm Used To' was iTunes only, and on the DM webpage, they say that there's no plan for a physical release (only digital) for 'Suffer Well'

in the meantime I found this:

it doesn't mention the monolake single there anywhere. (did I miss it?)
NEVER mind. I see it on the main page along with a teaser mp3...

Chris..let me tell you the progress of DM's albums:
speak & spell and a broken frame is when they are flirting with you.
construction time again is when you buy the drinks.
some great reward is when you invite them to your house.
black celebration is foreplay.
'music for the masses' is when they're pumping
'violator' gives us the money shot.
'SOFD' is that cigarrette after sex.
ultra is when you're asleep.
exciter wakes you up.
and playing the angel is morning breath.

I think what he said was actually along the lines of - the record company wouldn't let us choose all of the remixes for Precious, and we don't approve of the 'dumbed-down' remixes that were made exclusively for the US market
I don't think he was talking about the actual singles... but he may or may not have been talking about some of the remixes that have come after Precious, as it seems that all of the singles seem to have remixes by two contrasting types - like more abstract stuff (like "A Pain That I'm Used To (Bitstream Threshold Mix)") and more 'mainstream' stuff (like the Jacques Lu Cont Remix of the aforementioned single)
and no - I wouldn't say that you find this in the remixes from previous albums - they were more consistent

here's some sales info about how they are doing
in the US, (not sure about europe), i got this
from 'neworderonline.com' in a thread about dm vs no..
Depeche Mode's "Playing the Angel" slipped off The Billboard 200 after 16 weeks. However, New Order's "Waiting for the Sirens' Call" dropped like a rock and only spent four weeks on the tally, after debuting and peaking at No. 46.
"Playing the Angel" bowed at No. 7 and has sold 371,000 in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. On the other hand, "Waiting for the Sirens' Call" has shifted only 84,000.
Here is a rundown of the sales for Depeche Mode's U.S. album releases since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking sales data in 1991:
"Songs of Faith and Devotion" (1993; 919,000)
"Songs of Faith and Devotion - Live" (1993; 114,000)
"Ultra" (1997; 584,000)
"The Singles 86>98" (1998; 562,000)
"The Singles 81>85" (1999; 283,000)
"Exciter" (2001; 426,000)
"Singles Box 1" (2004; 2,000)
"Singles Box 2" (2004; 2,000)
"Singles Box 3" (2004; 2,000)
"Singles Box 4" (2004; 5,000)
"Singles Box 5" (2004; 4,000)
"Singles Box 6" (2004; 4,000)
"Remixes 81-04" (2004; 89,000 - all versions combined)
"Playing the Angel" (2005; 371,000)
Additionally, since 1991, when SoundScan set up shop, 1990's "Violator" has moved 1.5 million U.S. copies.
In other Depeche Mode news, three of the bands albums -- "Speak and Spell," "Music for the Masses" and "Violator" -- will see an April 25 U.S. reissue in deluxe editions. They will include all sorts of bonus tracks and video footage, along with remastered sound and expanded packaging. For further information, visit Depeche Mode's official Web site at depechemode.com or the band's remasters mini-site at remasters.depechemode.com.
Depeche Mode's "Touring the Angel" concert trek is on a short break until it April 27 in Mountain View, Calif. After that, the band heads to the Coachella Music and Arts Festival in Indio, Calif. on April 29.

not to take anything away from DM, but album sales
have a lot to do with touring, and vice versa...
sometimes they tour more to pump up the album sales..
other times..if they have great sales, they know they
can tour more places..
however, with a band like new order, who don't have
great sales, they don't get the touring support.

Allrighty. The Violator version sounds awesome in 5.1. The songs got more dimensions, though I have to listen to the original again to see whether some songs (especially Clean) haven't been changed. I hear a melody in Clean that I've never heard before.
As for Music for the Masses: fuck that. It won't play on my dvd player in stereo, Dolby 5.1 or DTS! I have contacted the shop already and have to change the dvd.

I co-DJed a whole evening of New Order and Depeche Mode last month, I got the responsiblity of Depeche Mode. Anyway, Suffer Well (Narcotic Thrust Vocal Dub) and Pain That I'm Used To (Jacque LeCont mix) went over huge. I was really suprised since the crowd seemed like the kind of fans who like their songs unremixed. People really danced their asses off the whole night. :D
As far as my favorite on Suffer Well it is with out a doubt the M83 vocal mix, funny because the first listen really disappointed me but after that it was obsession.
Oh and my favorite for A Pain That I'm Used To is the Bitstream Spansule Mix. Made my girlfriend sick playing that one.

There's something that really is bothering me about DM lately, aside from the eclectic songwriting on the latest album, and that is I heard a rumour that they rerecorded Suffer Well for the new Sims game, and Dave sung the vocals in Simlish, the language used in the game by those little buggers... I thought it was a joke until I went to depechemode.com and found the EA promo for the game there... they even rendered the band as though they were in the game... i think this is kinda sad, anyone else?

Better Days - great track. The remixes on the Suffer Well Single are pretty good - the -Basteroid Dance Is Gone Remix- is the better of the 2 IMO.
I just listened to this today on my nano... now I'm playing it again because I can... The -Basteroid Dance Is Gone Vocal Mix- - the lyrics are just too chopped up to me... They're very similar though.
The Tiga Remixes of Suffer Well are good. The M83 instrumental is really good and the Narcotic Thrust Vocal Dub is a nice club track (when you really want to feel the music through the body)...
I for one am looking forward to the remastered albums. I actually d/l them from a torrent site and for mp3's - I think they sound pretty good - looking forward to getting the actual CD/DVD releases though. I really can't wait for the re-issue of Black Celebration (the orginal recording is just too low and too tinny, it'll be nice to have nicer quality recording with some good bass and a fuller sound - I can't wait!!!!)

In a review Dave said he wanted to do this because the vocals were to be in the Sim language (a cross between Tagalog and Russian) - Interesting... He was up for the challange - and it was something different. What else could you expect from Dave Gahan?
I have the movie file of the video for it - it's pretty interesting...
Now what would be sad is if they ended up being nominated and winning a grammy for it - ha ha... that would be sad with all the other great music they 've released without much recognition here in the US because of the crappy pop music that fills the air...

i've heard some of Numans latest stuff and instrumentally it sounds pretty good. Its just a shame that he cant sing.
I only have his early stuff (Tubeway Army, Replicas, Pleasure Principle, and Telekon), but I like his voice! Its got a certain unique quality to it that most people don't have...I could tell his voice apart from anyones. Also in that respect, I like Stan Ridgway even better...

no - it's not sad at all... as aforementioned - there's the UW / Wipeout Connection, Underworld's "Word Image Sound Play" (or whatever it was called) and David Bowie's work & appearance in "Omicron: the Nomad Soul"... I think you could even play as bowie in it - i don't know, as I didn't own the console needed to play it
and - it's really not any different than someone using soundtracks to promote their work
There's something that really is bothering me about DM lately, aside from the eclectic songwriting on the latest album, and that is I heard a rumour that they rerecorded Suffer Well for the new Sims game, and Dave sung the vocals in Simlish, the language used in the game by those little buggers... I thought it was a joke until I went to depechemode.com and found the EA promo for the game there... they even rendered the band as though they were in the game... i think this is kinda sad, anyone else?

it's not the promotion of the music that bugs me per se, it's the Simlish Language... my ex was totally in love with the sims games when we lived together and I just found it really annoying to listen to LOL...
anyhow, I'm sure with enough exposure to the track, I could get used to it. Actually, I'm just glad that DM is still around and popular enough that they can get these opportunities.

Out on June 5th is the double A-side single "John The Revelator"/"Lilian" by Depeche Mode. The single is the fourth release from their "Playing The Angel" album that has surpassed 2 million copies in sales. Following "Precious", "A Pain That I'm Used To" and "Suffer Well", both tracks were written by Martin Gore and produced by Ben Hillier of Doves and Blur fame.
Considered by many as being the albums best two tracks (hah! not by me! albums two worst!) the songs will be available on a 2-track CD, Maxi CD and DVD, featuring exclusive remixes by Unkle with a new video, which was filmed at their live show in Milan.
The full tracklisting for the 5 different formats is:
2-Track CD single ("John The Revelator" Single Version, "Lilian" Single Version),
CD Maxi single ("John The Revelator" 'Dave Is In The Disco' Tiefschwarz Remix, "John The Revelator" Murk Mode Remix, "John The Revelator" Unkle Re Construction, "John The Revelator" Boosta Club Remix, "John The Revelator" Tiefschwarz Dub),
the DVD single ("John The Revelator" Video, "Nothing's Impossible" Bare, "Lilian" Chab Vocal Remix)
and 2 twelve inch releases ("John The Revelator" 'Dave Is In The Disco' Tiefschwarz Remix, "John The Revelator" Tiefschwarz Dub, "Lilian" Chab Dub, "John The Revelator" Murk Mode Dub, "John The Revelator" Boosta Club Remix and "Lilian" Chab Vocal Remix).
They say you cant polish a turd, but I hope these remixers can do a good job on them. Hopefully they'll start by removing those godawful lyrics.

Poor Martin :p

ok, i've heard all the mixes off the 11 track promo..
i think some are pretty good..
as far as the john the revelator mixes go,
only 2 have a lot of vocals in them, the rest
are all pretty instrumental..
i don't really care for the 'lillian' mixes though,
most are pretty minimal noise, electro, type
mixes, and barely use the vocals..
i have to admit depeche mode is finally
getting more adventurous with their
mixers though..
is this a record for releases/mixes off an
album? there must be about 50 official
ones for all the singles...

I also scored the remixes off the 11 track promo, and although I haven't really had the chance to properly listen to all of them, but yea I'd have to agree with -1 about the remixes
overall, I definitely think I like this group much more than the ones from the previous singles - especially "Suffer Well"
and it definitely seems that with each of the singles, there seems to be a consistent pattern of 1/2 of them being more danceable, then the other half being more ...'glitchy' for a lack of a better term
as far as this album bringing the most (overall) mixes, that I'm not sure of... I think Ultra might've had more, but... what I have noticed is that they really haven't had any 'promo-only' mixes off this album (save for James Holden's mixes of "The Darkest Star") - which, honestly I feel is a massive improvement over past albums. It was always such a pain that some of the better mixes were always so hard to track down
but - if anyone has the time, they count up the total number of remixes from each album on http://www.depmod.com/misc/index.html
and ...one favor to ask - does anyone have Mayer's Ambient mix of Precious? I only have it on the dvd and well... I'm a bit too lazy to record it off the disc (and I'm running out of space on my HD for another .aif file)

just rip the track from the dvd, if you have a pc,
there's a program i always use called dvd audio extractor
that does the job..
i'm glad depeche is making a come back of sorts,
i haven't really listened them in about 15 years
(on and off)...maybe they still have it in them.
(unlike u2, new order, human league, etc.....)

-1, thank you for the suggestion about ripping audio from a DVD. I didn't know there was software available to do this. I found a 30 day trial from http://www.castudio.org/dvdaudioextractor/ . Works great. Just finished ripping my Depeche Mode, 'One Night in Paris' DVD.
Cheers, Jason
