So, I want to start hiphop discussion. I know there are people on here that are into it. I myself am a huge fan of old skool hip hop and their political messages. Some names:

At first place definately A Tribe Called Quest. Their productions are fucking ace and Q-Tip is a great rapper.

In no particular order:
De La Soul. Actually only their first album, that's just pure fun.

Eric B & Rakim. They have never put out an album that I like, just some tracks that are fucking ace. Rakim's lyrics are one of the greatest I've heard. "I Know You Got Soul" is perfect.

Gang Starr. Productions are fucking good, and I really dig Guru's voice. The music in hiphop/rapmusic is of real importance of me, so Gang Starr is definately one of my favourites.

Nas for his fantastic "Illmatic". That's a short but most sweetest sensation.

Ice Cube. For real, bitch.

Public Enemy. It takes a nation of millions to hold them back!

And then I must be forgetting quite some.

These days there has been a lot of good hiphop too. I can name Atmosphere, (early) Buck 65, Pete Philly & Perquisite, Cyne, Blackalicious, Danger(MF)doom, Dizzee Rascal, Lyrics Born, RJD2 and more.

If you're into hiphop, share your thoughts. It would also be cool if you can interest me into new stuff.

Cannibal Ox - The Cold Vein.

I was talking to a friend of mine, who is also into all types of music, and when I mentioned this album he interrupted and said, "The Cold Vein is the greatest album of all time of any genre." I don't know that I'd agree with him, but I wouldn't argue with him, either. Check it out.

Roots Manuva - Awfully Deep

This is my most recent love. Good lyrics, beatiful beats, diverse, great production. Awesome album.

Diverse - One A.M.

I think this guy might be one of the best emcees ever. The album isn't as high on my list as some others, but holy shit when he's on, he's on. Check out the songs, "Build", "Move", "Certified", "747", and, uhhh, that one by Madlib. Damn. Can't remember the name.

Cage - Hell's Winter

Not as good as the others here, in my opinion, but interesting. Hell of an effort. Former junky examines his vices and his youth.

OH! And the fucking Wu, man! Wu-Tang forever!

Seriously: Raekwon's Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, Method Man's Tical are classics. GZA's Liquid Sword. Ghostfaces' Pretty Toney album. Masta Killah's No Said Date. All of those are money well spent.

For tracks, check out Guillotine by Raekwon or Shadowboxin' by the GZA. Those tracks turn me on they're so hot. "Poisonous paragraph smash the phonograph in half..."

Thanks for the suggestions, will check them all out.

Prefuse 73 has also colaborated with GZA and Mastah Killa, the tracks' called "Just A Throught" which turns me on like... well I get really horney from it. it's short but fucking sweet, Get this.

And yeah, Roots Manuva. I have "Run Come Save Me" and it's fucking amazing. He's got a VERY own style. His productions are fucking good.
I do have the SONG "awfully deep", not the album. Will try to check that out too.

Now receiving the Cannibal Ox album, will let you know what I think :)

Edit: Shadowboxin' is ace.

First of all Atmosphere. Their lyrics are great. Slug can talk about girls like nobody can ( especially about his ex Lucy :) ). The productions from Dj Ant are great aswell. Slugs side projects are worth the listen aswell, like the album "Felt" he did with Murs.
I'm going to see him saturday in the melkweg, amsterdam and i know he will deliver.

Dalek makes hip hop like you have never heard before. He blends ambience and other electronic music with hip hop. It may take a while to get into it but when that time finally comes it's fucking great.
Dalek presents everything very well.

Buck 65 is one of my favourite mc's. He mixes hiphop with folk, country and punkmusic. His lyrics are like poetry. He also gives kickarse live performances so check them out. A kickarse interview with buck http://oc-tv.net/buck-65.htm

Gang Starr has made one of the best hip hop albums ever, called "Hard to earn". It comes from the golden year 1994.

People are maybe going to hate me for saying this but Eminem's album "Slim shady" is fucking awesome. The lyrics are funny as hell and you will be laughing all the time. The production is also far better than the shit he makes today.

Sage Francis, another white boy, makes great hip hop, half of the time i don't even know what he is talking about. All good though, great beats and his anger shines through every song.

KRS One is a legend for one reason...his self titled album. Forget about his new shit, just listen to this one.

Other favourites:
Pete Philly and Perquisite - Mindstate (2005)
Snoop Dogg - Doggystyle (1994)
Ice Cube - The predator (1992)
Eric B and Rakim - Follow the leader (1988)
Public Enemy - It takes a nation of millions to hold us back (1988)
Nas - Illmatic (includes songs produced by DJ Premier) (1994)
Anti-Pop Consortium - Arrhythmia (2002)
A Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory (1991)
Blackalicious - The craft (2005)
MF Doom - Operation Doomsday (1999)
Aesop Rock - Labor days (2001)

why hasn't anyone mentioned the roots yet
their "come alive" album is IMO one of the best "live-recorded-albums".

also the fugees should be mentioned! "the score" is one of the main reasons i started listening to hip hop...

And yeah, Roots Manuva. I have "Run Come Save Me" and it's fucking amazing. He's got a VERY own style. His productions are fucking good.
check out "dub come save me", basically a dub-hiphop version of the album. i like it even more than the original "run come save me".

Like Monkeyboy is saying, definately check out Pete Philly & Perquisite. They're actually a Dutch act and they reside at Epitaph records. A Lot of great music on that label.
Anyway, Pete Philly & Perquisite also has an own style. They are really versatile, and their album "Mindstate" describes a lot of states of the mind. On top of that, Perquisite plays a lot of instruments so Cello, flutes, sax and more are also featured on the album. It's really amazing. And I'm being enthousiastic about it because it's Dutch for fucks sake, not a lot of good shit comes from Holland.

Well I had the Fugees album once but I didn't really dig it at all, except for "Fu-Gee La", that's a cool track.

I will check Dub Come Save Me Out. Is that produced by Manuva himself?

Just checking out the Cannibal Ox album too, that's fucking ace! "Iron Galaxy" and "Atom" are cool. Thanks for the suggestion.

Anyone heard the DANGERDOOM collab between Dangermouse and MF Doom? It's fucking great, imo. Like watching saturday morning cartoons, lots of AdultSwim cameos. The clip for A.T.H.F. is great and can be seen on their website (http://www.dangerdoom.com/index2.php).

AQUA TEAM HUNGER FORCE!

p.s. MF Doom is the greatest mc of all time.

I'm not a big fan of Dangerdoom album, but MF Doom's other albumis pure hotness. I didn't know Doom dissed Monster Island Czars on the el chubra track, but MF Grimm and them came back w/ another song. errrrrr

I posted on "should'a been on the list" thread, but people should check out Edan - Beauty and the Beat. Fantastic shit, than theres John Robinson aka Lil' Sci of Scienz of Life. i downloaded the leak edition, bunch of advance tracks by him produced by Mf Doom, Madlib, Dangermouse, etc. When his new album comes out, i'm going have to say it'll be my hip hop album of the year from what i've heard.

Lyrics Born, Blackalicious I use to be big fans, but i've kind of bored with their work now.

i wouldn't claim to know much about hip-hop, infact my knowledge is fairly limited, but in the late 90's i was seriously into Jurassic5, haven't heard anything from them for a while thou.
now the only hip-hop i listen to comes almost exclsuively from the quannum stable of artists, yeah i know i need to broaden my horizons but cash is limited and there's so much music out there i want to buy

Indeed, MF Doom's voice is brilliant. Didn't check the Dangerdoom album out, although I do have "Mince Meat", which is hot.

Winston: Heh, I didn't know OP was copying Beastie Boys. That's stupid yeah.

Btw, in my first post, I forgot to add one:

Ultramagnetic MC's.

Talk about oldskool, heh. Those beats are very hot. I find Kool Keith's vocals really interesting.
If you don't know them, get the whole album "Critical Breakdown". Or I suggest you get "Critical Beatdown" (the song) at least, to make you interested. Then you'll also know where the "pay close attention, I'll take your brain to another dimension" from Prodigy's Out Of Space comes from ;)
Also, they've got a track where Kool Keith shouts "smack my bitch up, change my pitch up" and stuff like that. Another sample unraveled :D

and kool keith is the same guy on dr. octagon, a slightly more underground 'project' he did. k&r put a track of his on their comp that one time.

Yes, I have that one. Although I don't like all of it on that album, there are some really rocking tunes on that.

Which also leads to something in the same catagory: Deltron 3030. As Dr. Octagon and Deltron are both produced by Dan The Automator. I prefer Deltron above Dr. Octagon. Update Your Grey Matter!! yay!

I've been consisting on a pretty steady diet of Three Six Mafia lately. Such great production, tons of personality, funny/clever lines, etc. 'Stay Fly', 'Ridin Spinnaz', 'Sippin on Syrup', etc. A lot of their side projects are great too, my fave being Project Pat's 'Chickenheads' THAT is a great tune.

HOLY CRAP!!!!!!!! Boy, the gangsters in Compton or the Bronx must be thankful he's not around.

Back on track.

Outkast - Aquemini or ATLiens are the two albums that I compare the rest of traditional hip hop to. ATLieans is weaker, but it has by far the best hip hop track ever, 13th Floor/Growing Old.

If you want some straight up dirty, profane gangsta rap, Three 6 Mafia or Project Pat is the place you want to be. Project Pat's "Layin Da Smack Down" is like a symphony of crunk nasty, and you can pretty much pick any 3 6 album up and be ok. Some track recs for each would be... Project Pat - Nine To Yo Dome, On Nigga, Choose U, Weak Niggas.... Three 6 Mafia - Hit a Muthafucka, Act Like You Know Me, Where Is Da Bud, Mean Mug...

For your turntablist craft, DJ Krush's Meiso is a golden masterpiece. The track 3rd Eye, Duality and.... hrmph, titles escape me but just go get it already.

EDIT: Hell yeah, Tyler's on the 3 6 tip too. West Side Reprazent. What he said about the production, he's right. Tall Paul is an INCREDIBLE producer, there's nothing better than a 3 6 beat with Scarecrow all over it.

Digital Underground - Sex Packets and Sons of the P : I wore these out but their newer stuff went downhill.
Big Daddy Kane - Long Live the Kane, It's a Big Daddy Thing, really just any of it. Also one of my staples when first exploring hip-hop.

Das EFX has an interesting sound and I also like Tone-Loc and Sir Mix-a-Lot but strictly for their novelty bump value. I don't think there's necessarily anything special about them and Richard Cheese's version of Baby Got Back is way better IMO. ;)

My statement was more a commentary on the state of hip-hop at the moment. I love what the Chems do. They've alway gone off into different styles, and that's why they are so good.

Well even though the album came out on 11/30/2004, the actual single didn't drop until '05 and it kicks the crap out of that Chem Bros song. Motivation, by T.I. was the best hip hop song of 2005.

And Hip Hop right now is kicking the shit out of electronic. Though I don't harbor the same contempt as Dubman, I'm curious Dirty Canuck as to why you think hip hop is suffering so bad. Over the past 2 years we've had incredible albums drop by The Roots, Mos Def, that T.I. Hmmm, I'm on an electronic band's board with knobheads left and right...

Or in other words, I'm completely not shocked with the previous two posts. :)

EDIT: However, to say that I'm more or less completely exhausted with electronic music and it's apparent lack of innovation, would still be a gross understatement. All of the dancable stuff sounds familiar, all of the non-danceable stuff (see, Autechre :P) is like putting your head inside a car engine that's just thrown a rod. Trip-Hop and what-not still has potential but electronic (without naming any names) in general is a genre that is too scared of change to be relevant.

Oh and Eikman, if we're going to laugh at each other's tastes, I feel obligated to let you know that I've been laughing for the past 20 minutes knowing that Mr. I-Heart-Autechre just laughed at my sensibilities. :D

I whole-heartedly agree with you, Future Proof, that these were great albums, and celebrate what is truly good about hip-hop (I haven't heard the T.I. album, though), but these are exceptions.
The genre is saturated with Neptunes-produced, thug-wannabe garbage nowadays. In my opinion, the state of hip-hop isn't a good one right now.
There was a time during "The Golden Age Of Hip-Hop (88-94)" when the crap we are subjected to now would be ridiculed by the hip-hop community. For example, LL Cool J, was constantly scoffed at for the stuff he was releasing, so to show that he was "real' he released "Mama Said Knock You Out". Anytime you saw a rap artist promote KFC or something back then, they would be laughed at. Hip-hop is more a business now, than an art-form.
Mos Def says it best on "The Rape Over" on "The New Danger" album.

When I speak of "Galvanize", though it may not be the best hip-hop track of 2005 to some ("Push The Button" was released in Jan. 2005 in North America), it's music that makes you feel good, and is an example of what hip-hop was, and what it should be.

Now let's all get dressed up in our finest designer clothes, grab the champagne, and all smoke up in our new BMWs.

I see what you're saying, it's just that I also feel that electronic can be looked at in the same way. When I first started getting into electronic 13 ( fuck I'm getting old!) years ago, it was raw, no one was using it to sell cars and I remember when Fat Of The Land by Prodigy hit and commercials were using Firestarter and then later more electronic music to hippify their corporate juggernaut, and the backlash that Prodigy had.

I guess what I'm saying is that if we're going to assert that things are low because of the money machine then we're probably just focusing on the wrong aspect of the genre. Whereas there are the one-dimensional artists out there and the artists that whore themselves for a buck, there's legitimate talent out there, even in the trance genre and even in the gangsta rap genre too.

Point Taken.......
It's hard to not focus on the wrong aspect of music, when you're constantly being subjected to it when you turn on MTV, or the radio.
Good Hip-Hop, as well as all music, is something you really have to search for nowadays, it's not going to come to you anymore.
One positive aspect of Hip-Hop is Kanye West and Dave Chapelle......
They are using their popularity to showcase good artists, and I give them the utmost respect for doing that.....

Has nobody mentioned Madlib yet? He's got to be one of my favourites, and he's also behind many other projects: Quasimoto, Yesterday's New Quintet, Lootpack, Madvillain (with MF Doom) and Jay-Lib (with J Dilla), probably more.

I have to say that my all time favourite is the abstract hip hop that comes from Ninja Tunes and a few other lables. DJ Vadim is incredible, as is the Herbaliser and my current favourites, Ammoncontact (Carlos Ninos is another man behind many a brilliant project).

I've never got the Herbaliser. Never heard a track that made me want to listen to it again, or find more of his tracks. I recognize that this may the wrong mood at the wrong time that's led to this impression.

Farq. I just kicked my desk, and my nice new white Staedler eraser fell into my glass of juice that was on the floor.

Speaking of Jay Dee......

It was him, Q-Tip, and Ali Shaheed Muhammed, that were The Ummah, correct?

Are they still producing? Last production I heard was Jay Dee's work on Common's "Water For Chocolate".

I'm not too much of a hip hop / rap head myself, but i can get down to most of the known names listed here already, especially the west coast stuff...and i like the de la soul's and tribe called quest's of this world too...been listening to a lot of Ice Cube recently though, plus the NWA stuff...but not an expert really :p

Anyway, my main reason for posting is that i have just acquired a large (over 1,700 items) collection of hip hop & rap and soul CD's - mainly hard to find DJ promo's and stuff

...i got these yesterday, and spent all day sifting through them...and if anyone is interested in anything please let me know, as its pretty likely that i will have it...(its all on CD so don't ask if i have any on vinyl)

i got it cheap, so can sell it cheap, so if you are really interested in some stuff in this genre please pm and i'll do you a very good deal...hope this isn't breaking forum policy, but i just wanna help out and i'd rather sell to a few dirts - people that i know and love - than anyone else...

if you're not interested, its going on ebay and to a record fair...i'm selling it all individually so i can sell 1 bit at a time...

some of the artists in the pile are:

nas, snoop, dre, nate dogg, jay-z, ghostface killa, ginuwine, missy elliott, mystikal, xzibit, ice cube, fugees, timberland, fat joe, ll cool j, warren g, outkast, p diddy, ja rule ... plus loads more i can't recall at the moment and then there is loads of the more R&B / souly stuff like pharell, kellis, aaliyah, babyface, r kelly, mariah carey, boys II men...etc...

anyway if anyone is interested pm me and i'll sort ya'll out

cheers
