8 ball is one of those rare songs where, no matter what, it can bring happiness out of you. its that great of a song. i mean, i was bored with music today in the car and i pop the beach in and everytime, no matter what, when that guitar comes in i feel so great and the world opens up so much more.

Karl, I beg you please! Please some way will you give us the guitar tablature for this song. I wish so much to learn it and my ear isnt that good to learn by ear. Ill pay for them if i have to, but please!

Actually, it's not better than I think, because I already think it's fabulous ;)

It's definitely a track that has a life of its own... away from its artist, so to speak. I always have to keep reminding myself that it's Underworld. Great stuff, indeed!

Well, I don't know that I'd use such extravagant praise, but "8 Ball" is really nice. Certainly one of the best songs they made post-1996.

Yep - have to agree 100%

It's a pure gem, sublte and beautiful at the same time.

Delicate piano & guitar work - a wonderful R&K collaboration.

i know people like different songs...and thats what all the polls are showing, but seriously do we need a thread about each one...??

i hate 8 ball, but i'm probably in a minority (especially in this thread so far)

i love Jumbo and alot of other tracks, but i can't be arsed to shout about it in a separate thread...

8 Ball is not even 'underated', its a second rate song that featured on a film sound track, it shouldn't even be on the 1992-2002 best of...what did it do to deserve that...?? if they had released it fully then maybe, but as it goes its a just a noodly doodly tune with some whacked out lyrics...and some geetar

it reminds me of the early 1980's and perhaps it should have stayed there, Doot Doot's a better track than 8 Ball...

no b/s

It was, and is, a great, uplifting tune.

I fucking love 8-ball, it's really sweet.

Also I don't think opening a thread just for 8-ball is a bad thing. Personally I think it deserves that, and the track hasn't been discussed a lot on here. And there are thousands of threads on here already, so why not another one.

I have never heared 8 Ball, so can't compare? What's the deal about uploading tracks @ linking them? (as in You send it?) I have Doot Doot at work, can easily copy & upload :D

Agreed. I love this song and agree with all the praise listed before. As soon as I heard the layers of guitar building and building it sured this song as one of my all-time fav's. 8 Ball and Rez really do it for me, and apparently many others. Makes me feel happy to see there are so many other who enjoy this lovely song. :D

"8 Ball"'s an interesting one...when it was released with "The Beach" soundtrack, wasn't there some degree of complaint that it was too "upbeat" for UW? Then came AHDO, and the good vibes continued (well, sunnier than say most of Beaucoup Fish before it!).

i think "8 Ball" captures the wonderment and awe of walking around town and appreciating your surroundings. Karl's obviously very attuned to what he see and hears (hence his notebooks and photos), but i think this track is one of his more straightforward examples.

Also, it's a great complement to "King of Snake" on the 1992-2002 compilation...such a nice comedown track.

Holden

p.s. the other "BEach" single..."Beached" by Orbital has the same uplifting vibes and similar message (though with Leo DiCaprio delivering it, for right or wrong!):p

since this is the official UW forum, it's pretty logical that it doesn't allow linking to illegaly shared mp3's of their music don't you think?

well, apparently there's a lot of people who love the track so...
the anthology was basically just a singles collection anyway and afaik 8-ball was released as as single, although Japan only.

as far as the song goes, i like 8ball. its great. very relaxing. i wouldnt say it sounds that old-skool. Certainly not as dated as something like "Oh". The Beach OST as a whole is a great disc of music.

Does anyone else find this comment coming from FB Matt to be incredibly ironic? Did you seriously need to beg in about 4 different threads for people to enter your UW so you could sit at your PC processing statistics and entering data into spreadsheets for 4 weeks straight so you could tell us what percentage of dirties who entered your poll were called 'Matt'?

Come on, let the people talk about 8 Ball.

Agreed,

The reason i made a thread for this song was because there isnt much talk at all about it on the forums.

This track just really stands out from Underworld; to me at least.

Point is:
I just think this song deserves more credit/acknowledgement than what we give it.

thanks for all the replys so far though, its good to see im not alone in my cause.

:p - glad you read the stats....

well, the UW Poll is an Annual poll of favourite UW songs, and i thought i'd throw out some interesting statistics of the people who voted...

and with so many 'I love 8 Ball' and 'when are UW gonna play my town' type threads, the original poll thread kept getting pushed down the pages...it was a limited time vote and thus needed the exposure at the time...hence the re-posts

I don't want to be too down on 8 Ball but we've had this 'i love 8 Ball' thread several times over the past few years...

its just dull - i don't like 8 ball, but i'd feel the same if somone posted a thread called Jumbo...(which i love) - we just don't need a jumbo appreciation thread, unless it has a point

the general way these threads go...

first post: 'I love Jumbo...its rocks'

second post: 'so do i'

'yeah agreed'

'me too'

'i don't like it'

'well i do...'

blah-dee-blah.....

some people like it some people don't...surely that's the end of the story...no-one has come up with anything new about it...no-one has discoved anything new in it...its not gonna get a rerelease...just leave it be...

i'm not against anyone posting threads at all, i have no authority here, but if we did this for every bloody song, well there'd be 100+ threads...

btw its just my opinion...you 8 Ballers carry on...

(btw, KOS, i've never seen the Japanese 8 ball even though it was rumoured, did it actually come out - any one have a copy as proof - now if the thread was about the existence of this i'd be more interested....)

if you can sit through the slightly dull first half, the second half of 8ball is absolutely beautiful :)

hmmm, well you're probably better informed about this than i am, so no i'm not actually sure this came out. It's just what i remember hearing somewhere :)

I do agree that there isn't much point to threads like these, but hey, it's the Underworld forum so they're bound to come up in times when there's not much else to talk about (until the next riverrun that is) and as long as there aren't actually hundreds of these threads going on i don't think it's a problem. People should be able, and even encouraged to communicate their feelings towards UW music don't you think? :)

no offence meant matt. if you find these threads dull then ignore them. if its just the track you find dull, then by all means chime in with your tuppence.

none taken, and i mean no offence either, especially to Caprice who obviously with many others loves 8 Ball....i'm all for the freedom of choice, and opinions...

I don't like 8 Ball, and made my point about it...its dull, lifeless, and seems like filler material shipped out to some soundtrack, and it seems a waste of space on the anthology, imo...

my main point is that i just think that an 'I love xxx' track thread is a bit fruitless...

but thats not to say others won't appear, and that i won't contribute to them

Like KOS said, its good to talk about UW music and even encourage it, but what originally happened with this thread was that Caprice started it pretty well by saying that 8 Ball is better than you think and gave a couple of examples, then everyone else basically just chipped in and just said i love / hate 8 Ball, without really much more explanation...

If anyone is interested, i did some searching on 8 Ball, a while back - concerning the single release:

It was released on the promo only 12" b/w Beached by Orbital, which, was released a single (seeing as it was kinda the theme tune to the film), but the Underworld track didn't come out for some reason...

anyway 8 Ball was obviously scheduled to get a release (presumably in Japan only) as this link on the EIL website confirms:

http://eil.com/shop/moreinfo.asp?catalogid=153192

it even has a Virgin V2 cat number...and was scheduled, accoring to the data to have some remixes and extra 'content', but these mixes were either not completed or are still lying around somewhere...(i'll see if i can find anything out).

anyhow, it never came out as far as i know, simply because EIL never informed me when they got a copy, because one never arrived, as they told me at the time

so it remained a promo only track, afaik..., and if you don't have 1992-2002 - its on the Beach Soundtrack CD, or if you were lucky enough to get hold of the JBO 5 track sampler given out at the Astoria on 27.06.00 to celebrate 10 years of JBO, it on there too...and all of the versions are the same length with no edits or variations

just helping you 8 Ball lovers ;)

my main point is that i just think that an 'I love xxx' track thread is a bit fruitless...i see what you mean. a thread saying "i love xxx' track isnt very deep is it? but when people say why they love a track then thats much more.

Caprice: "it can bring happiness out of you"
hopeless: "makes any dark day a very soft and very beautiful grey day"
denknat: " it's fabulous....It's definitely a track that has a life of its own"
NinjaPower: "It's a pure gem, sublte and beautiful at the same time. Delicate piano & guitar work"
froopy seal: "a great, uplifting tune."
change: "As soon as I heard the layers of guitar building and building it sured this song as one of my all-time fav's."
holden: ""8 Ball" captures the wonderment and awe of walking around town and appreciating your surroundings."

So I dont mind these threads as long as they delve into why songs are loved so much and what they love about them.

I think the reason why 8 ball made it onto Anthology is because Underworld had a track they liked, alot, and it wasnt getting much attention.

I think they (Rick and Karl) placed it on the Anthology because they really like the song they've made, 8 ball, and wanted people to know its there.

I think when they were picking the songs that summed up a career of 10 years, 8 ball hit a spot they sure as hell wanted to include.

my .80 cents

thats fair enough,

i'd like to know when they made (i.e. recorded) the track...

because, to me it sounds like that it was made, before Emerson joined, just at the end of the Mark One era, but its most likely the first track that they made after he left, in 2000... it would be intersting to know how this track came about because it doesn't appear to be a 'missing' track from BF or AHDO, as it wouldn't fit on either album.

I don't think it was recorded in either session, i could be wrong, but its kinda like 'Oh' in that sense, that its a 'unique' track that doesn't really fit anywhere...except on a movie soundtrack

anyone know...

i only ask this because both the beach and trainspotting are danny boyle movies

as for figuring out the guitar parts in this track, keep in mind that it's probably impossible to play it live on a guitar since there's three parts going on at once (kind of spread out left-middle-right in the stereo field).

What you find a lot on Anthology's or Best Of's, is an extra/new track. Even though 8 Ball was already released, they might have thought it deserved more attention than it got, and thus put it on the Anthology.

And listening again now, my god is it wonderful! I understand if someone finds the first half dull, but if you listen closely it has a lot of layers and it really is a necassary build up to the "second part". Seriously one of the better tunes by Underworld.

'8 ball' is one of my favorites. it's one of those tracks that i play when i'm feeling down... i always smile when karl sings "today, i met a man who threw his arms around me". it deserves to be on 'anthology', even though it's not a smash hit, it's just classic.

I don't think 8-Ball is filler on the Anthology. It's one of the tracks they included that a lot of people probably don't have, such as Big Mouth and Dirty. It also fits chronologically between Beaucoupd Fish and AHDO. And I do like it.
