Yeah, their Exit Festival performance (someone posted a link to it in that thread). I'm listening to it right now. Drum 'n' mutherfucken bass indeed.

i thought it WAS Pearls Girl tbh...just a different longer improv'd version...

don't think its that new material

The first bit was Pearl's Girl. I heard remnants of Tin There later on, but I don't think it was that. Who knows? We'll find out when the new album comes out if there's any dispute.

yeah, they played Pearl's Girl, but what I was talking about is how to describe the new songs....kinda like a Pearl's Girl breakbeat with Tin There synths and deep, epic Juanita-esque moments. I love the second new song (the instrumental) at lot more than the first, vocal one....but they both rock!

i still kinda think its more likely to be a pretty long PG / TT improv type bridge between two more popular tracks...Pearls Gril & Born Slippy....i'd be surprised if this makes any album...it'll end up as some kinda remix possibly or on the expected 60 minute EP...

Whatever it is, it's very pretty. I wouldn't object if a more developed version appeared on their next album. I'm also thinking that with the quality of the .mp3, it might sound better when the fidelity is better...

Oh, and Born Slippy was too slow. It needs to be at least 5 bpm faster, if not more...

Maybe it was Rick's Down Ambient Mix;)

Hmm, seems pretty developed for an improv...lyrics ("Vision, c'mon"), great hook (appears ~14:30), those great booming drums, then the entirely new direction/track after 18:00. But then, i see your point, especially since Karl says in the interview that this will be released soonish, could be EP material. Also, must remember we haven't really heard live jams from the boys since Peel Session 2003, so who knows what kinds of new loops they have for improving. This might become a common bridge between songs that in some months we'll all recognize (remember "Beep Beep" from the last tour?!)

They one day just need to release all of the improv stuff to uwlive.com, or sell it through uwlive.com/dirty as a limited run.

We also need to remember that they were testing these tracks out, so they're going to sound different later on (like KOS did and so on).

this is thrilling if the spirit of stiti is in these new tracks... that would be to die for... man how much do i love that style...

where is this link?

as good as STITI was... i'd rather that UW did not go backwards and relive old glories...the future is new sounds and ideas...not old style drum 'n' bass type tracks that STITI had influencing it...

i really don't think we're hearing new materials (unless they have specifically played a 'new' tune on the past two dates...any one know for sure?)

i'm still holding and reserving judgement until someone says this is the new single or this is an exclusive album track...

I'm not so sure, Big Screen... would anyone tell LTJ Bukem to stop making DnB? Would anyone tell Lil Louis to stop making house tracks?

I'm not so sure that UW would be "re-living" the old days, if they could trump them. At that point, all that's left is an air of familiarity... we'll see what happens this autumn, I guess.

I'm not so sure. I'm just not so sure. :D

oh i didn't mean that, but those two examples you gave are almost exclusive to their genre, Underworld did a spot of drum 'n' bass, and have dipped into many genres over the years..but i think just because STITI was a good album, then - they shouldn't necessarily go back and revisit it...

i think its 'of its time' and they should move forward - -we're almost 10 years on from that period...and personally i think the drum 'n' bass sounds played yesterday at Exit were so similar to Pearls Girl & Tin There that they may as well have been those tracks...in fact they did play Pearls Girl into this supposed new track - PG is a classic...but i wouldn't want it to be remade into something else now...

and personally (and selfishly) i don't like drum 'n' bass and wouldn't be that happy if this album went that way again....

new sounds new era is what i'd be looking for...Underworld are surely more inventive than doing drum 'n' bass again....?

that five minute instrumental "intro to BS" better show up as an actual song on the new album or else I won't buy it.

Well, you've already made the point that I was thinking of making, that being thta they've already dabbled in quite a few genres. What's left, IDM? Glitch? Drill N Bass? hehehe...

I know what you mean though. Believe me when I tell you that I would also love for UW to re-invent the wheel. But considering how free-form Underworld has been over the year and how unapologetic they've been for it, I think that unless they dropped electronics all together and started a jazz band or something, that their next album is going to have some sort of winding path back home to their other albums. This isn't always a bad thing though! :)

to me that second part of drum 'n bass (starting at about 18.00 after the break) is definitely a new production an not an improv. Way too developed for just an improv. It also doesn't sound anything like PG or Tin There to me. Sorry I just don't hear the resemblance at all. The only thing in common is that they have breakbeats. I don't see the problem with it really, surely the whole album isn't gonna be drum 'n bass so I just think it's nice they mix up the familiar 4 on the floor with some breakbeats. By your logic every time they made a techno track they would be "going back" because the first music they made was techno music, the drum 'n bass influence only came later on STITI.

If they touched on the best parts of Dubno, STITI, BF, and AHDO with the new album, that would be a very very good thing!

Listened to this show again, and that's either one wiched improv, or two amazing new tracks i hope to hear again soon! Mixing right into "Silver Boots", i hope!

I'm not going to read too much into this. I mean, look at the variety of stuff they've been listening to/playing on the webcasts.

I don't think this stuff has the feel of STITI at all though. That's not a criticism, it just feels different; so I'm just going to wait and hope for the best.

In bits - the breaky drum bit after the vision come on bit - it reminded me of ShoutTwice from UWlive. Not derived from it, just reminds me of it.

The more I listen to this though, the more I'm enjoying it. :D

my theory is, having listend to the track several times now, that it is new material of some description, but i don't believe that it will be:

a) a single or b) included on the new album

Underworld have always interspersed their gigs and filled the voids between populist tracks with sounds developed that have never seen the commercial like of day....some of these are 'soght after' by the fans...

we're all salavating at the prospect of new material and at the drop of the hat people get excited if anything can be interpreted as such...but why play a fairly non-descript track - with no name, at your first gig back and not tell anyone about it...it may have a name it may exists but it doesn't mean anything (yet)

no, its not gonna be released because it was nothing special, imo...it maybe that elements of the track make up tracks on the album, but knowing the way these things work, we'll get an 'official' single release and then the album, and the single release will be the track to get people to go out and buy the album...if this is the first single - no-one new will be buying the album....

i'd love some kind of confirmation of what this track is, and it was anice surprise to hear something new, but its no KOS or TMO...the launch tracks for the past two albums...

still we'll see what comes out...and maybe those going to HMH on the 17th can confirm anything new for certain....

Karl said in the interview - and this is quoted verbatim - "There are some eh new tunes on here that have never been released, um, which WILL be released... coming up very soon in fact, but we're just trying stuff out tonight."

So depending on what you count as a "release", these could be album tracks, b-sides, or uwlive releases. Or Karl could be confused about which part of the gig was being broadcast.

Like I said, I'm trying not to read too much into it, but I agree that this is unlikely to be a lead track from the album.

I don't think Karl's comments had anything to do with the specific part that was broadcast. He just got off stage and had no way of knowing which part they were gonna air. I'm sure they played more new material on that gig, and some of it will be released (duh). I agree that the track we hear will probably not be a single, at least nog as we heard it. Could still be an album track or b-side though. As soon as we hear the first single, we'll al know it :)

So do you think an album has been done? Or they'll go back to the studio after these brief dates to work on things based on crowd reaction? I think an album will not drop till at least October,i'm sure there still experimenting.

They might have to make the tracks more "woofter doofter", depending on crowd reaction;)
