but the endings leave something to be desired. i wish that they would end an album with a bang, like they start it out.

I liked Luetin on AHDO better than Mo Move.
I agree the opening tracks are really well chosen, but I think the ending tracks are, too. ME was a perfect ending to a perfect album, and I'm having trouble explaining why I feel that way. Stagger too. I wouldn't arrange their albums any other way.

moaner isnt bang enough? might possibly be the hardest track underworld has other than tin there. but id strongly disagree... i feel like they close each of the albums very appropriately.

Not that I necessarily agree with you on this, but really I think you're going to find that's true for a LOT of albums. Because it's the first thing you hear when you start up an album, when you think about it, in the artist's eyes, the opening tracks are really the most important. A person is much more likely to say, "I'll listen to this album, I like the first song" than he is to say, "I'll listen to this album because I like a song somewhere towards the end". I think Underworld are really good in this respect...the only album they have in my eyes that starts really strong and kind of fizzles out is Beacoup Fish, and even that has a great closing track.
Besides, there's much better targets for this accusation, like Moby's Play (I've owned this CD for like 5-6 years, and still haven't listened to some of the last tracks all the way) (and I know you like Moby)...really, I don't think Underworld has a problem at all in this aspect.

Stagger is the best ending track of any album, ever.
Except for 'Debra' on Midnite Vultures.

I'm sure there are lots of people that don't like Stagger (actually, I'd be interested in hearing what people think)...but I think it is one of the most beautiful tracks UW have released...

well i don't think of moby in the same way, because all of the songs are pretty good, but he isn't very good about having a strong opening track like underworld are. great album enders:
'unquiet slumbers for the sleepers......in that quiet earth'/afterglow -genesis.
'next to nothing' - fatboy slim.
'brain damage/eclipse' - pink floyd.
'icarus ascending' - steve hackett.
'macrocosm' - brand x.
'the sahara of snow' - bill bruford.
'3+3' - vangelis.

are most albums not journeys?
...some end on a high others on a low...(rhythmically not literally...)
why should an album always have to end on a barn storming track...?
and i think whats most important is that the opener is key, this is the first track you play...if its shit...you will judge the whole album thus...
its different playing live, you have to end on a high uptempo note, but for an album, it depends on how the journey has gone...and Luetin is a case in point...it sums up AHDO perfectly...
Luetin is a great ender, and Stagger... well, that's just genious.

but the endings leave something to be desired. i wish that they would end an album with a bang, like they start it out.I'm sorry but thats a load of crap. Moaner is a massive end of album bang and Luetin and Stagger are fantastic. Luetin is my favourite song on the album. As for Mother Earth, its a classic and a great way to finish the album. So, i completely disagree with you.
