i do a lot of analysis and attempts at rebuilding underworld sounds for fun, with arp2600/dx7/oscar/tb303 vsts. i have the sample analysis stuff to write up, but for now here's some recreations i did that i had a lot of fun with.
imagine a spoon deep that was not mixed at all and brickwalled
https://soundcloud.com/woofmute/underworld-spoondeep_9-analysis-woof-180924
now imagine that 1994 cowgirl ending improv bridge that may as well have been an unreleased track
https://soundcloud.com/woofmute/woof-underworld-94-cowimprov-270724
or the arp2600 main synth from rez. i can't actually upload my rez recreation to soundcloud because it gets flagged as the actual track lol

the string piano thing from the outro of dark and long live in 1994/1995, in isolation as its own thing... want it to be part of a bigger thing but this is that for now

since "whyshooteye" steals these and reuploads them as official early demos of the songs, i'm torn about wanting to continue sharing my work here. not to create drama but since you definitely check this thread, stop being an idiot. credit the fans you steal from and don't lie for engagement or try to pass fan work off as some secret official demo you have access to, from 1993, no tape hiss or anything. you ruin fun for everyone.

For the record, I've really enjoyed these recreations. Would be very fun to hear a 30 minute jam or something like it from you based on these. You're In Fucking Underworld after all
Also for the record, it looks like Why Shoot Eye deleted his entire Youtube account in response lol

that is wild...
whyshooteye, if you really want to upload my work, ask me and credit me if i say yes, don't lie about what things are. i appreciate an enthusiasm for the band but what you've done up to now has mostly just made the fans doing work get annoyed.
i've been doing several things, but here is my analysis on the source sample for the main percussion in You Do Scribble... sample is "Step 162" from Zero-G Jungle Warfare Vol. 1. this sample pack also contained the percussion from Bing Here and some from original Born Slippy.

bing here analysis work... the percussion sample is called "Cool Break 162" from Zero-G Jungle Warfare vol.1.. its a little rough so far.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aEaBt4YEdsE
Pearl's Girl sample analysis.... the samples i used are called "xl1-02.09-11 - funky raregrooves" "xl1-02.10-09 - funky raregrooves" "xl1-02.15-01 - hi-hat etc" and "xl1-02.25-08 tekno". all from Polestar Magnetics XL1.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9rmnTnrWU3M
Cups/Pens sample analysis work.. the percussion samples are called "120 0017" and "120 2412" from Best Service Gigapack 1. for the synths i used the official underworld patches they did for ImpOscar 2, a vst of the original Oscar. they used the first version of that vst for one of the synths in Bird 1.

Can you clarify this? I looked at Jungle Warfare here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3mmqG-nXFc
And I'm not able to figure out which sample that is from your description ("Step 162").

i will clarify when back home to check. the issue becomes the source and it's booklet, and that they have had rereleases over the years. many sample packs from the time are archived online in repacks which complicates things further, but i will do my best.
edit: just as an example, my source for this could have been based on the reason release, which needed conversion to wav from proprietary format. and some releases had more samples on one release and not on the others:

so my release was a repack i think from an akai release. converted to wav and categorised. i would need to obtain the regular vol. 1 disc itself to verify the specific track number and sample id.
the folder is "Zero-G - Jungle Warfare 1, 2&3\VOL 1\Straight Loops"
at the very least going through and listening to the samples in any release of those is your starting point.

Thanks, I was able to identify it as Track 20, Index 6: "Step" on the original CD. It can be heard in the YouTube video above at about 22:09. I was very curious to hear the original, raw sample.
In your opinion, do they use any of that sample in "Scribble"? It's obviously a different, simpler pattern, but did they use anything from this sample, or just create all new stuff?

it seems to be clearly inspired by the original from You Do, but the sounds don't match. and the structure is a little simpler, the high hats at the end of each loop in Scribble having pitch variations going on becoming the variation there. maybe they or the collaborator thought it sounded a little dated or less punchy or otherwise harder to work with for the sound they wanted.
this is very rough and needs more elements analysed and the 303 bass needs more programming, but i thought it would be fun to show more process... two hours work so far.

minneapolis so far.... i'm using two percussion sample loops for it that i'm confident on right now, both from Best Service Gigapack 1. 100 4715 0SL/0TR for the main backing perc loop, and 105 7525 03L/04R for the cleaner kick/snare sample from that one song everyone says they sampled for it... which is true, but it wasn't a direct sample. its more likely it was a loop in a pack like this that they used, which itself was a sample from that song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1BFAmiptnI

puppies ambi narrato, from the longer recording of narrato from the tomato art video. inspired by narrato having a similar click, and the ambient puppies ending for Everything Everything.

Are those the same (or is it just similar)? I never put that together.

the only connection that stood out was a very similar click sound every bar, which might actually be the same sound. unsure on the source for both though. i thought it was close enough and then the first half of narrato had a synth sound that ended up working nicely with my puppies synth attempt.. so then i left that in and made this.

from some further research into the sound source for the pad from Dirty/Skyscraper, the Emulator II has it as a sample in its stock bank. my notes testing the Emulator II soundbank in Emulator X, have it marked as this:
patch 362 bank 2 program 106 - Orch Chords - Skyscraper/Dirty Pad.
sample library:
sl817 - long hold,
sl818 - higher truncated version with fade in.

also had a go earlier in 2024 at getting an approximation of the arpeggio notes from near the end of Sappy's Curry.... its not quite 100%, but its a very difficult song to work on and tweak synths and percussion for. i'm still happy with it though, even got the pitch bend in...

refactoring my Rez recreation project, trying it on hardware for fun... i need to tweak the midi for hardware a bit as it has different quirks to the arp2600 vst i was using, and fix the one note that's not sounding correct in dynamics lol. it still gets detected as the original song and not just matching the melody. my Techno Shinkansen work was matched only on melody. they think i uploaded a segment of the actual song again.

cherry pie because i mostly just wanted to know how they did that long note melody.. 50% of the way there on finishing transcribing that. ended up using korg triton extreme vst for that, got a similar enough sound tweaking one of its built in sample patches.
