DRIFT was released as a sampler and a super deluxe, eight-disc box set that sold out on release.

Responding to both demand and many people’s changed circumstances, the package has been remodelled for a new compact edition that contains all of the original CDs and accompanying BluRay along with a perfect bound, 50-page book and a previously unreleased, hour-long recording of Rick’s DRIFT pre-show set recorded live before Underworld’s show at Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam on November 23rd 2019.

This new format is way better and handier. When the original box announced the first thing I missed are the original artworks for each EPs. Now they are in the new box, and the booklet is also much more handy. Simply can't believe it happening!

i really hope this is the case. i think some people on here have thought that a bandcamp page would be a great idea for the band and i'm so glad it's starting to happen. maybe they'll eventually put up riverrun, perhaps??

Yeah, I was very happy to see them using Bandcamp and am hoping Drift Series 2 sees them using it further.

I'm torn on the new box. I do like the individual sleeves with each EP's artwork, but at the same time a 12" box is just overall a much nicer thing to own than a 5" one. Especially as it matches the superdeluxe versions of earlier albums.

edit: ah ffs it includes a CD of RicksDubbedOutDriftExperience?! Great, I'm going to have to double-dip now, then. That's a bit of a pain.

You can buy the new disc as a lossless download on Bandcamp. I can live without the physical disc on this one. That they made this new box product comes as a surprise though. I guess people really were complaining?

If I had to guess I'd say that the old box set was harder to manufacture hence the availability problems and higher price. Probably had a higher minimum order quantity to get the sets made than the new format.

All of those early versions are available to buy in the individual episodes on digital retailers. If you want lossless, then look at retailers like Qobuz, 7Digital, Beatport, TIDAL, ProStudioMasters, HDTracks, and Acoustic Sounds. Most of them have 24-bit options too.

A couple of interesting notes:

They've changed the artwork for Episodes 2 and 4. There's also new sleeve artwork for the Necks disc and the Blu-ray. The Necks artwork is from a photo taken at Sydney Opera House (in the Drift book)

And there are lyrics for every song published on Bandcamp! If you click on Drift Series 1 Complete and mouseover next to each song, you'll see a Lyrics link.

I think its a good move. Bring costs down, give each disc its own slipcase, give the existing fans something new, make the whole thing available in high-res formats, add lyrics to the lot. Whats not to like?

If so, then you go to the Sound of Vinyl website here: https://redeem.thesoundofvinyl.com/ and log in with your credentials you supplied last time (you don't need to give them your download code again) and the updated .zip file will be there for you to download. I tried on Saturday but there were only 7 of the 9 Amsterdam tracks in the archive, so will have another go later today.

If you haven't used the code previously, then it's on the bottom of a card with the poem on that was loose inside the box / cellophane.

Ricks set at wembley was fantastic. think it ended with a bombing version of better than diamonds/drift poem. I so wish that was included with this release.

You know - I was surprised at the use of bandcamp too
(even though I'm pretty sure I mentioned and suggested it here)

But, honestly - I think more bands will be using it going forward. It's a pretty easy interface (both to share content & to download) and it's super nice to have the different download options. Plus, as a 'band' / 'content provider'... the service has nice options to package releases, which you can't really do on iTunes.

I've managed to get quite a few mixtapes and remix collections off of Bandcamp - plus, smaller bands like "In Flagranti" have put up most (if not all) of their back catalog on it.

I love Bandcamp. It's been quite popular for a while and growing even more popular. I don't use iTunes. Ain't gonna drop cash on lossy variable bitrate. Bandcamp is simple, direct, and gives you options for formats.

Anyone have a good zip or wave file of Lovely Broken Thing? Mine repeat from the midway point and restarts JAL. Not sure why? The zip gives me the same audio as the WAV I had d/l many many years ago when I bought it. But for some reason the mp3 is fine. It's the WAV file that isn't. So strange.

So I was pleasantly surprised to see the DRIFT smaller box set with individual sleeves for the discs come up. I know larger artwork generally trumps, but I was more interested in getting the 24-bit files from Bandcamp! So I listed my copy of the OG box set and sold it for $300US on eBay!!!! What the...?!!! So I pre-ordered the new boxset and was very happy to get the d/l from bandcamp in 24-bit and a PDF copy of the book. That alone is totally worth the price w/out the physical box set.

I much prefer 24-bit d/l files as opposed to a physical disc these days. I wish UW would release their catalog on bandcamp in 24-bit!

Actually, it was more the text i was concerned about. It was super-blurry and difficult to read. But I've just realized that apparently it's just a problem with macOS Preview. I opened up the PDF in Firefox and Chrome's built-in renderers and the text is sharp as day there.

As for the covers, I actually grabbed them all in higher resolution from Shopify already. If you go to underworldlive.com/store and open the image gallery, and open an image, then replace the resolution at the end of the image URL with something like 4000x4000, you'll get the highest (original) resolution. For example:

Actually, I know an even better trick on Bandcamp for even larger, higher quality art. This way you can get the original upload size of images, which can be quite large. Most of them are 3000 with a couple being 2000.. You'll need the web address of the image you want.

Click on the cover image you want. Then, you can right click and click "view image" or, if on phone/tablet, press and hold down on image for the "view image" option to pop up. View image will take you to image's web address.

Check out the web address up top, it's usually a letter and some numbers with an underscore (_) followed by 10 or some number.

For example, Another Silent Way...

Now change the "_10" to just "_0" like this...

You will now get the original upload size JPG. Another Silent Way cover is actually 3000x3000

Am I right to infer that, because Rick is still into the improv, the lack of improv in the UW main sets is Karl's preference? Just sayin. Probably more complex than that.

It's probably way more complex.

Reasons I've heard/read:
If memory serves from 2010, it was the lighting guys who wanted to make the switch to a static setlist as it made it easier to give a contemporary live electronic music experience.

I recall Karl saying once, "We didn't have as many songs to make it through back then."

Reasons I've guessed at:
Improv will always have the risk of going poorly. 1998 glasto's NUXX has an aimless endbit for a handful of minutes, for example. Rick seems like a perfectionist to me and would rather not risk providing a less than perfect show to fans.

I also bet that making the jump from regular sub-headliner of the 90s to legacy headliner act comes with an expectation of polish on stage.

All these reasons *feel* accurate to me, but then there's one show that throws it all for a loop... Amsterdam Dance Event 2017. It was fully a pre-2010 style Underworld set, and it was EXCELLENT. Karl fully behind the desk with Rick, reworkings of old material, and even some brand new material that we still don't have even after Drift.

Anyhow, this is a rambling post with little concrete evidence behind it, take it with a few grains of salt. Maybe drift 2 will be a live project where they ceremonially burn a setlist before the first show of the tour and start every show with short versions of NUXX and TMO. :D

Personally, I prefer the chaos and improv. That's a live show. Forget some elaborate bpm synced light show. I want a balls to the wall Underworld gig with them just going for it. Giving me pointless jam sections. I miss the spontaneity. But a lot of the legendary electronic acts have gone this way with preset sets. I miss the jams. I think they should stick with preset sets for festivals and jam sets for solo gigs.

If memory serves from 2010, it was the lighting guys who wanted to make the switch to a static setlist as it made it easier to give a contemporary live electronic music experience.

but that still doesn't explain why you'd lug a HUGE screen around just to show the name of the song and the same pattern of dots (with different colors) for an entire 2+ hour show

I think past a certain point, when you've performed these songs for 15-25 years, there's only so many ways you can arrange a song, only so much enjoyment and surprise you can get out of improvising. Once you've found a fantastic arrangement for a live song, there's not as much satisfaction in performing an "inferior" take for the hell of it, when you can execute a great version that gives you a rush to pull off exactly right and makes audiences go nuts.



I definitely still love the sense of surprise and interaction, over hearing a take executed exactly like the album or Everything, Everything. But even the most die hard fans have maybe heard only 30-40% of all the shows they've ever done and that's exhausting. Imagine hearing all of them, playing all of them, and the one thing you haven't done is put together the "perfect performance" and tour it consistently.



Besides, the entire ethos of spontaneity and improvisation found a new home in Drift and I'm pretty happy to hear it. And live, it makes sense that Rick gets back into being improv heavy when it comes to new material like this and the Carnival sets from 2017 - the element of surprise is back, he hasn't performed those songs a hundred times yet.



I get how the lightshow could have led to more controlled setlists - the lightshows from 2010-2014 were a lot more elaborate. Following that was Dubno's tour which introduced performing studio-exact renditions of songs paired with minimal visuals which made sense, and likely felt comfortable and new for them, so it was an easy decision to carry that on to Barbara Barbara's tours. Then the band has some fun again in 2017-2018 - Amsterdam, Rick's opener sets, surprise additions like And I Will Kiss - while also getting to continue presenting studio-exact performances. Immediately after that? Summer 2018 is the start of Drift recording, and no spare time to re-imagine things.


It's definitely weird to have a giant high res screen just to show off some typography, but IDK, it's not my money. If we keep getting great studio tunes I'm pretty happy, and it's not worth seeing a band live if they're not enjoying what they're doing, and you're only going to get good improv if they're into it.

I have a few answers on some questions:

1. The Drift Series 1 Complete box set will not contain a download code for the Additional Releases.

2. The Drift Series 1 Complete box set will also be available through normal retail channels (i.e. it's not an Underworldlive exclusive)

3. Normal retail channels (both physical and digital) are through Universal/Caroline, and UW have much less control over that. Going forward, everything will also be posted in 24-48 quality on Bandcamp and Underworldlive.com (Shopify) which are channels that they have full control over.

The additional material was all the stuff they released in between Drift episodes. Usually there was like 3 weeks in between episodes. So each Thursday during the break, they would drop something from their archives. Sometimes it was a studio jam or unreleased track or a rehearsal or live excerpt or DJ mix. They included it all in 24 bit WAV. I'm guessing they'll do the same when Drift 2 happens.

The screen was doing much more in 2010 when they first got it. They were basically doing all the music videos on it for 2010-2012.

Adding to live surprises, they unveiled a new track and fully released it all in sync with a live stream and broadcast with TeatimeDub. You can't do something like that if everything is off the cuff. The last few years they've done a pretty good job of rotating out some archive gems, too. I never imagined they'd dust something like Why, Why, Why off for the stage again, and we got a new Dirty rework some 15 years on.

I really think WhiteNoise nailed it. I can see how getting that mix just how you want it and touring it for everyone to see could seem attractive to the band. It's also worth noting that the one really special leftfield set (ADE) in recent memory was live streamed for everyone to see, and the other one (Rick's prejam) was just released for us. Unique concerts are really cool, and when everything goes great it's hard to beat, but I can imagine it being equally frustrating when the mixes just don't come together. The catch to all that is that youtube clips become show spoilers, and for many here that was the only way to keep up with what they were doing for a long time.

I had the original set- and wanted to get the high res audio which the set on bandcamp would offer- I had some issues with the download for the new Depeche Mode Violator 12" singles set (which have been sorted) and have been sent an extra download code (Not Bandcamp- but you do get the 16 bit WAV's)... just wondering if anyone has an unused bandcamp code for the set they would be up for a trade for my spare unused Mode code??

Millions of people use Bandcamp. Labels like Planet Mu have their official store on Bandcamp. Peter Gabriel (and his Real World label) sell through Bandcamp. And probably about 95% of all the smaller independent labels I follow use it as their main online shop.For anyone not aware, Bandcamp has one of the best (or maybe the best) payouts for artists, of any of the current music outlets. So it's an excellent choice if you want as much as possible of the money you spend to actually end up in the artist's pocket.

Yes, everything on Bandcamp is 24-48. Keep in mind that the Episodes on Bandcamp are derived directly from the box set. So if you’re going to buy all of them, it might be cheaper to buy the Complete bundle instead.

Also keep in mind that there were differences between the Episodes as they were originally released and how they appeared on the box set/Bandcamp. If you want the original Episodes, you’ll have to buy them from other retailers (like Qobuz, 7Digital, ProStudioMasters, HDtracks, etc, if you want 24-bit).

I got a Japan store I shop with using VPN that has Ep. 2 in 24 bit, but it's frigging expensive and has kept me picking it up. One day when I have extra cash to splurge away. Unless some folks want to go in with me and I'll the provide 24 bit WAVs to those that donated.

Also, absolutely love this performance/set. My favourite hour of Dritft so far actually. And that's saying a lot. Impeccable sequencing, and some truly sexy sounds. Remarkable how these guys are still going but of course we're used to their dependability by now.

There's just something about the mix from Mary into Harry that just perfectly encapsulates UW for me. It feels like a light freefall at the end of Mary and Rick just catches you perfectly and redirects the existing momentum and energy back up into Harry with such ease. This is such a sublime and wonderful piece, I love it; some of the very best live UW, in my opinion, only thing it might be missing is some light and sparse Karl improv over it.

Is there any chance that the "repack" box set will ever be reprinted? I have one of the original box sets (#260) but I've just discovered (much to my chagrin) that the newer set included RicksDubbedOutDriftExperience on CD, and I'd like to have that on physical media. As nice as the large box set booklet is, I wouldn't mind having the set in a more convenient form as well.

Yes, I'm aware there are copies on Discogs, but I'm not paying over $100 (once US shipping is factored in) just for this.

I mean, the repack box was the reissue already due to the demand for the original box set. I don't think it's going to be reprinted again.

It was released domestically in the U.S. It's just a matter of finding who still has stock. I didn't realize that this had run out of stock at the distributor level though.

Edit: After looking around, I guess I just had not been paying attention. It looks like it's been out of stock most everywhere since about summer of 2021. It was so plentiful and cheap when it was first released, I just figured there were a ton of them that would be available for a long time. Unfortunately, if you really want to own it, it looks like you're going to have to bite the bullet and pay the secondary market prices. There were two copies that were sold (immediately) on eBay for $47 each in September, but other than those, there haven't even been any copies on eBay within the last year.
