What would be your perfect Underworld setlist? and why?

Pick 10-16 tracks only!

Way to have me blow an hour at work

I think last time i came up with one of these here i just did a relentless marathon of sweaty dancing that no one should have the energy to do on a nightly basis. Even today it's hard to not do that, but i attempted a kind of buildup to it with some breaks in the middle to keep it interesting on a sensory basis. Also trying to keep it on the short end because I err more towards the Lightning Bolt approach to a live gig.

the essential idea of it is all the big hit energy with less of the actual hits. live, loose, and will light you up.

Silver Boots/Pins
King of Snake (Sept 97)
Juanita/Kiteless/Deep Pan
Pearl's Girl/Push Upstairs (full on! enough with the "straight up" one)
Strumpet Groove/Confusion the Waitress
Dexter's Chalk
Border Country
Please Help Me / Cappe Ffuno
Why Why Why
BYTWB/NUXX (w/ 2003 piano in the back half)

Nylon Strung

This feels like a fun challenge to just mix one myself. Will start brainstorming!

Okay... here's my initial setlist

Builds up quickly, followed by a few slower ones, then it picks up at the end.

1) Cups (without ‘Pins’)
2) Confusion the Waitress; add ‘Pins’ to the end, transitioning to…
3) Juanita / Kiteless
4) Born Slippy (Original)
5) Pearl’s Girl
6) Push Upstairs
7) Back in the Fears
8) 5 Points
9) Glam Bucket
10) Appleshine
11) Jumbo
12) Luetin
13) Dark Train
14) Deep Arch*
15) 020202
16) Born Slippy .NUXX + ’03

* and I haven't checked the bpm's, but I'd imagine that there could be a good medley / mash-up using "Deep Arch" and "Schiphol Test"

I'm not going to attempt this because a) difficult to choose 16 or less favorite tracks from a favorite band, b) haven't got the time to think about sequencing, i mean really think about how this would play out live, and c) choices would likely change tomorrow.

i will say that i really like the posted mixes (dubman, i'd pay for your gig, guaranteed. You had me at cappe ffuno!), the efforts for diversity/obscurity!

Thanks man

I also like how these setlists have something different to give. Purlieu’s sounds like when a band make a stop at somewhere different than usual, like a library or a park, with a different crowd coming out for an intimate night where they stop to talk to the small group that gathered in. Joe’s reminds me of the LHN days if it got defibrillated, and neorev is if they were the most generous band on the planet.

With the exception of KoS Barking Mix, you're right, it would probably suit quite an intimate / casual environment. I just tried to put together the most surprising / least likely to happen setlist, because I think that would be something really worth seeing.

Interestingly, no one has suggested the god awful, but annoyingly (live) ubiquitous Two Months Off, that surely to god everyone is bored to tears with by now?

100%. That's my go-to-the-bathroom track. It's been performed more less exactly the same way since its debut. If you've heard it once you've heard it a thousand times. The most overrated of Underworld's anthems.

It's always sounded a bit...oh I don't know..'forced' to me..."Let's write a massive comeback anthem for our return", that sort of thing, where they try a bit too hard to sound like classic Underworld

'One Perfect Sunrise' was actually the last track on their last album before they first split. But yes, it really felt like "let's do a big Halcyon-esque climax to end things". I've always hated it.

eh my only gripe with TMO is that when they do it live they don't do the heavily-layered rhythmic coda which to me is the high point of the tune. I still love the track - when I first heard it, it clearly stood apart from their past anthems. I think of "Dinosaur Adventure 3D" as the forced one.

I'd agree with that assessment of Dinosaur Adventure 3D.

Yes, Dinosaur Adventure 3D always felt like King of Snake II: Not as Good to me.

Sorry, its "All Too Much" for the perfect 10 to 16 tracks, but this is hard...

01 Luetin
02 TMO
03 Bird 1/ALAF
04 Surfboy/Skyscraper/Spikee
05 Cherry Pie
06 Cups
07 Push Upstairs/KOS (Would that work?)
08 Dirty Epic
09 Banstyle/Dark Train (Improv?)
10 Glam Bucket (With some of the Rez elements)
11 Born Slippy/Air Towel (Jam Version)
12 Pearls Girl
13 8 Ball/JAL to Tokyo/Bruce Lee (Improv Medley)
14 Rez/Cowgirl
15 Born Slippy Nuxx/Kittens (Imagine in the beat section comes that Kittens energy?, its still dream setlist right?...)
16 Moaner
17 Juanita/Rowla

I know weird end, but Juanita is one of the best, I like live energy of Underworld, so its too much upbeat dream setlist. Cool setlists across the whole thread...

i don't have one. i wouldn't want to know what songs they play.
i wouldn't want to dicate how it would sound.

i would prefer it to be totally improvised, and partially dj'ed.

ok, maybe not 14 hours worth of it. but something along those lines.

Sorry, its "All Too Much" for the perfect 10 to 16 tracks, but this is hard.... Yeah the reason i said 10-16 is because thats the number of tracks Underworld play (10 at festivals and upto 16 at their own gigs). Gotta keep it reasonable. Much as I'd like them to do a 3hr gig again...
