DRIFT - Episode 2, Part 4: Brussels

David Bowie’s LOW was the first record that made me realise that a singer can stand at the back as well as the front of the band. Rick was ahead of me in his vision for the dubnobasswithmyheadman album and he’s done it again with Brussels.

Twenty-four hours before this release it was one of a pile of unfinished pieces ‘not’ scheduled to come out. Simon Taylor filmed his route home that evening as he travelled down the motorway - some of this footage inevitably found its way into the conversation.

Working back and forth with sound and image is how we're developing the DRIFT Series, Rick weaving and stitching grooves, melody and words together; drawing parts from disparate songs to create a piece of music that shocked me. Twenty four hours ago, this journey through the edge of night didn't exist.

Great sum of parts, cool to hear more from Karl about the Drift process. Obligatory "I wish it were longer" comment!

Listening to the 4 Drift EP.2 tracks is a very satisfying experience. Much as I like the punch of the first half of EP.1, there's a depth and experimentation to the 2nd EP that certainly recalls RiverRun, maybe not heard since RiverRun and, dare I say, STITI. Maybe Karl's reverb vocals, the Banstyle-style of Appleshine, I dunno. But I love it so far. Playing the very disparate 4 tracks together is starting to make coherent sense.

It does need to be right? I don’t want to add a journey where there should be a moment, but it feels like one of those film edits from the first ep where it seems abrupt and disjointed until it gets its 6 minutes

Otherwise it’s lovely.

The more I listen, the more I hear new and unusual, of the trotten path. Basically what Drift is to be.
I really enjoy this. It amazes me that Rick got this together in like 24 hours, but I too hope for a slightly longer edit.
Dope!

Brilliant track. Would love a longer one, but if not then definitely happy with this alone.

So does this mean there’s no real plan regarding which tracks are in each release? I’d just assumed that they had a month or two backlogged ready for release while they worked on upcoming episodes.

seems like there IS a plan, though to hear Karl say it, there's not one.

However, if you look at the track listings in the drift episode, there's a definite order.

I'd guess that is what Karl wrote when he first heard the piece, or a feeling of that time.

Drift is, to my mind, in part, an experimental marketing piece

i didnt mean as a criticism, more of a 'huh!"

i figured each 'episode' had a plan of 4-6 tracks. and that there was some mixing theme rick had in mind. but seeing as how Brussels wasn't even in play until the release date, that means Rick's final mix of E2 isn't in play yet either.

total drift.

This track has some of the most potential as a single, IMHO.

Little bit of reworking on length/development. The drums are just amazing.
