Drift, Episode 1: Dust
DRIFT started as a journey with no fixed destination; an experiment and a very public investigation of new working processes by Underworld. On that journey, Karl and Rick stopped at a pig shed in Essex; Rockingham Speedway; a hotel room in Reykjavik; AIR studios and a series of tiny club shows in Amsterdam, Manchester and London. Each of those stop off points helped influence the creation of DRIFT Episode 1 parts 1 to 5…
Now presented via all major streaming/download platforms, DRIFT Episode 1: DUST features extended and developed versions of each of the Thursday releases, including collaborations with DJ and Producer Ø [Phase], Australian experimental impro-trance band The Necks and a piece made to reflect the ongoing work of the award-winning Manchester Street Poem project.
The second episode of DRIFT begins in January 2019

The "A side" is possibly the hardest and rawest set of material they've ever released - 020202 with Barbara Barbara DNA. Smashing and flows outstandingly well.
Then there's the ambient back half - love the flawless transition from Another Silent Way to Low Between Zebras, and facinated, if not also perplexed, by the expansive arbitrary meditation of A Very Silent Way, a song so unintentional it's miles from something Underworld would have ever released 10 years ago.
If we've lost the "closeness" we felt from them improvising structures and setlists on stage, we're getting it back here, in how fresh, sharp, and free these songs are. It's shockingly close to the source and wilder than Riverrun. Hold on best you can.
Can't wait for January.

after the third reveal i really started to suspect that i'd like this a lot more if it were longer and as a unit, and that was totally true. pleasantly surprised! gonna go through this a few more times before i get back to the year-end albums i missed out on.

Really glad to get this - to be honest I had not really listed to the individual releases much. It's not a complaint as such, (call me old fashioned) but I don't like this format for releasing the tunes. The first one I could buy, the next few I could not, they were all obviously edits and I kind of just hoped for something like this instead.
Anyone else waiting/hoping for a physical release or are you just sticking with the digital now (£13.49 for lossless!)
Moaning aside - absolutely loving the new music as always :) Like was mentioned in the previous posts, a bit more raw and nice to get back to some intense techno.

Agree...great to have these all in one place with non-edited versions. I'm on through listen 5, and really enjoy the pace, mood and transitions, too. Dexter's Chalk continues to excite. Not as psyched about the improv jam, as it doesn't really hearken back to the original for me and I find it a little basically in terms of not really evolving beyond a few repeated grooves. But it's pleasant enough, and definitely the more organic side of UW, per their soundtracks or maybe like the Eno-Hyde jams.
I have the EP downloaded via subscription service, so I guess I'm paying a small price for this every month, but split between hundreds of other tracks. If the price is right, I'd consider buying digital, but really would like a CD or maybe DVD with the film's, too

this trio of songs:
2) Universe of Can When Black _ 6:04 (Underworld)
3) Dexters Chalk _ 5:01 (Underworld, Ø [Phase])
4) Another Silent Way _ 5:27 (Underworld)
is the most i've liked new underworld tracks in a long time.
another silent way is THE standout track to me, which evokes the most classic underworld sound.
these tracks definitely deserve some remixes now.
these 'full' versions are good. but i still feel more can be done to them.

normally i would be tracking these, but with all these haphazard releases, mixed digital formats,
and whatnot, i haven't bothered. but for the actual underworld tracks [not collabs], i'll update them in the list
at some point.

Yes, we're asking for a full BYTWB. The short intro makes no sense. It wasn't part of the drift Ep. 1 series, and this short edit adds very little to the vibe of this release.
Now, If Ep. 2 starts with more of BYTWB, we can talk about continuity and common threads...
I've listened to this EP through 8 or 9 times today. As is always the case, each listen reveals something new. I'm more interested in Zebra than earlier, but still struggling to make sense of the Silent Note improv. But still excited for new tunes

I guess that's what was confusing to me. I guess some of you missed that BYTWB was released shortly after the film was released earlier this year? So, you can edit and include it in the EP to your heart's content.

Qobuz US is still in invite-only beta, so I think that might be why you can't check out. My Qobuz account is still associated with the UK store, and I don't want to switch it over until I'm sure the US store is running all right.
You might need to wait until it shows up on other 24-bit retailers. It'll probably be cheaper than Qobuz then anyway.

Yeah, I know. So what's the point of putting 29 seconds of a previously released track on this collection? It wasn't part of the Drift releases the past 5 weeks. Does it set a mood for what comes next? I'd say no, since the following three tracks are techno, and the final two more ambient tracks are pretty calm, whereas BYTWB, though beatless is not exactly "pretty" soundscape, it's got a grating lead. Now If BYTWB is part of the Drift story, maybe we'll hear more of it in future episodes/EP. If it's just supposed to support the notion that UW is fully experimenting with different styles and less polished sounds, so be it.
Anyway, it's just 29 weird seconds on an awesome EP! Really enjoying these new tracks.

Drift is up on Acoustic Sounds in 24-bit now:
https://store.acousticsounds.com/d/140271/Underworld-Drift_Episode_1_Resolve-FLAC_48kHz24Bit_Download
But a bit more expensive than I would've expected. I'd wait for ProStudioMasters and 7Digital to see if they're any cheaper.
I just noticed that on most platforms, the name has been updated. It was initially released as Drift Episode 1, and now it says Drift Episode 1 "DUST"

A way around Qobuz's expensive price...
Simply purchase the tracks individually.
Each track is £1.99, so you'll pay £11.94 for all 6 tracks in hi-res instead of £18.99. As silly as this is, it's something I've done before to get cheaper prices. £11.94 is much better than £18.99 in my book. You will still get the album cover even with an individual track.
;)
You're welcome.

Sorry to not understand the various platforms Underworld are using for this release, but is there somewhere it can be bought and downloaded as Flac files, or perhaps .wav without having to have a subscription to a streaming platform?
Perhaps these are options on the sites linked, but I have no interest in using streaming audio services.
I am really enjoying the Drift release and like others have said it echoes the immediacy and inventiveness of the Riverrun Series which were among my favourite release by Underworld.
I would also echo Crank’s call for a physical release.

This is ludicrous. It's like they're actively encouraging you not to bother with the 24 bit. I'm not even remotely an audiophile (I still go for mp3 on the odd occasion I buy something digitally), but I find this kind of pricing terrible. For the extra cost of rendering at a different rate and hosting larger files, the difference should be - at most - a few pence.

when it was first being rolled out to all platforms, it was listed as Drift Episode 1 (Resolve), then to Drift Episode 1 and finally to Drift Episode 1 "DUST". so it is "Dust".
