DARREN PRICE - EVERYBODY JACK EP
15 / August / 2018

Long time scene stalwart Darren Price is stepping out on brand new label, Kilsha Music, with a fantastic EP of monster house tracks arriving on both vinyl and digital.

Price has spent 25 years traversing the globe as a DJ-both solo and as Underworld’s tour DJ—producing music for essential labels like Junior Boys Own, Novamute and Underwater, and being an integral part of the Underworld Live shows as well as being in house engineer for the seminal band’s recorded material. He’s remixed more Underworld records than anyone and has frequently collaborated with them on stage, weaving in his own productions. He has also worked closely with Native Instruments, road testing Maschine and writing a track for its initial launch that went on to become a viral video a few years ago, which you can watch here. That track, ‘Everybody Jack’, which has also been played live by Underworld for a few years, is part of this powerful new EP alongside cuts recorded during a break from touring last year.

Opener ‘Charm Offensive’ is a fantastic ten-minute trip into loose limbed techno. Drums, bass and percussion all wrap and weave around each other and melt your mind in the process. A rasping lead synth eventually becomes the focal point as background chords bring real soul and emotion to the groove.

The brilliantly bristling ‘Everybody Jack (UW Live Maschine Mix)’ is a full fat track with busy textured synths, sci-fi effects and old school jack vocals that will really work the dance floor into a lather. It’s dynamic and ever evolving, with plenty of tense peaks and troughs throughout to keep the ‘floor on its toes.

The final vinyl track is ‘This is House Music’, a deeper cut with warm, warbling bass and a muted acid line spraying about the mix. It slowly builds the pressure in heady fashion and is one to really hypnotise. Digital bonus track ‘Everybody Jack’ (UP Mix) is an airy and percussive number with happy piano chords rolling over female vocals and colourful sound designs that really make the track pop. It’s playful and full of character.

This is a fresh EP from one of the techno scene’s most enduring and essential talents.

Tracklist:

A – Charm Offensive
B1 – Everybody Jack (UW Live Maschine Mix)
B2 – This Is House Music
DIGITAL ONLY – Everybody Jack (UP Mix)

Here is Darren demoing the Native Instrument Maschine, with the song Everybody Jack. Amazingly as of this post only 380 views on YouTube. Lets change that! He says he wrote it in his shed in one day! It sounds great.

Nice. The Deep Arch remix was played during the Athlete's Parade on the Olympics broadcast, and was the last track that was unidentified until now.

That all these bespoke Underworld remixes haven’t been officially released is madness. They’re all great!! So much better than the rubbish mixes on the recent singles.

To add some deep thoughtful and meaningful contributions to this thread.............I'M SOOOO HAPPY. This is long overdue. Where can we get the vinyl from, or did I just miss a link in the article?

No sign of it yet. I imagine more info will become available over the next couple weeks.

Is this the last piece missing from the Barking era? It's definitely one of my favorites. Similar to Scribble, though, I'm dissapointed we aren't getting some of the earlier (equally good) versions.

Might be a dumb / outdated question but is Darren Price still working with Karl and Hyde? Haven't seen him in a while...

He's been kicked from the stage since the end of the US tour in 2016, but I think he's still doing in-house engineering for them.

Absolutely loving having some new Darren Price vinyl. Everybody's Jack is a fantastic techno tune - can't believe it's taken over 10 years for this to get some kind of release. Loving Charm Offensive too.

Makes me yearn for some Pricey mixing between Underworld Live tracks sometimes coon....you never know.

The vinyl was clear which is cool (I don't think this is advertised).

More please :)

Agreed, "Everybody Jack" and other Price improvs that bridged UW live tracks circa 2005-2008ish really inticed and breathed some new life into the set. The 02-03 improv bits we're cool, but less so than what we later heard. Stuff like "Nicodemus", " can you feel this bass"...

Am I recalling correctly that "Moroccan Meatballs", "Small Conker and a Twix", "aquafunk", "shake that higher", "yard beat" and "Five ft five" were also by Price, or did Rick have input? All banging segues.

I have Price's "Under the Flight path" lp and was never that excited by it. But he's clearly a talented producer and his tracks and remixes compliment UW very well.

Think I'll download this EP and agree, hope for more.

Beatport is usually one of the most expensive places to buy tracks, second only to TIDAL. It might be worthwhile to wait till Oct. 5 when it will be available cheaper on iTunes, and hopefully other places like Amazon or Google Play.

If you want lossless, hopefully it'll also show up on cheaper lossless stores, like 7Digital or Qobuz.

So, the Bang...you seem to know everything about everything...
Inform me/us on what Pricey has done. Those are a lot of interstitials, many that we considered Underworld.

Well, I don't know about everything. I guess you're asking me to enumerate a lot of the Pricey tracks that were played on tour? The majority of transition tracks played from 2005-2008 were Pricey compositions, though a few of them that sounded kind of like interstitials later turned out to be Underworld songs, such as the 2008 show in Berlin where Rick dropped an early version of Hamburg Hotel which was literally composed the night before at the hotel in Hamburg where they were performing.

Here's a list of a lot of the Pricey songs for which we have names (and these are all confirmed to be Pricey songs):

Everybody Jack (the early version)
Sidestep
Can You Feel This Bass?
Shake That Higher
5 Foot 5
Yard Beat
D's Ablt
Hard Vibe
This Race
Borialis
Lockin Mono
Summer Days
Aquafunk
Nicodemus
Morrocan Meatballs
Circus Faker

And then there are about 10 more songs (most from 2008) which are likely Pricey songs for which we don't know the names.

Small Conker and a Twix is Underworld.

Think I'll download this EP and agree, hope for more.
I think more is on the way (or planned, at least). If you look at his Soundcloud, when he uploaded the teasers for the Everybody Jack EP, he uploaded two additional song snippets labeled as "Coming end of 2018":

Pricey is still working with UW 4 days a week and on the other 3 days he's the new James Bond.

So, this was released in only a few more places on Oct. 5.

If you're OK with lossy files, it was released on iTunes (should be worldwide). It's also available on Google Play, but slightly more expensive. It disappeared from Amazon before the release date.

For lossless files, the only options I could find were Juno Download and Beatport. Juno Download is slightly cheaper, about $9.

For the vinyl, it doesn't appear to be available in the U.S. so you'll have to import from abroad. The most reasonable option I could find was Juno Records which should be about $14.32 shipped to the U.S.

Nah it’s all good, lack of cd can be mitigated by lossless availability on Beatport and Juno download ;)
