From underworldlive.com: (http://www.underworldlive.com/news/2018/06/teatime-dub-encounters/)
While overseeing the soundtrack for T2 Trainspotting, Underworld’s Rick Smith arranged a meeting with Iggy Pop in a room at The Savoy Hotel on London’s Strand to discuss working on collaborative music for the film. Their respective tracks Lust for Life and Born Slippy (Nuxx) had perfectly bookended the first Trainspotting film two decades previously. On arrival, Iggy found a fully working studio set up and eagerness to get cracking.

Says Rick Smith “Iggy was staying at The Savoy and graciously said ‘yeah you know we we can meet and talk about something’ because we both felt a strong connection to Trainspotting and to Danny. I turned up thinking I’ve got one chance here to convince this gentleman that we should work together. So I turned up with basically half my studio, hired a hotel room, set up and sat waiting.”

Says Iggy Pop “When you are confronted with somebody who has a whole bloody studio there in the hotel room, a Skyped director who has won the Oscar recently and a fucking microphone in front of you and 30 finished pieces of very polished music, you don’t want to be the wimp that goes ‘uh uhhh’, so my mind was racing.”

Teatime Dub Encounters is the result of a few clandestine hotel room recording sessions, that began a few weeks after Underworld and Iggy Pop had each released their last albums (Barbara Barbara, we face a shining future and Post Pop Depression respectively) on the same day (18 March 2016). It is neither historical or a tribute to past work, it is the work of artists in motion, engaged in a process that they both bring to all of their work – one that uses spontaneity as a spur for creativity.

I just posted the video to I'll See Big in its own thread, perhaps someone could combine it with this one.

Also, I do believe we will get a digital copy as Bells & Circles single featured the EP cover artwork.

There are listings for the Vinyl and CD on Amazon UK, so I don't think the physical products are an UW Shop exclusive:

i love that red cover/art.

drama aside, i just don't feel Iggy at all on these tracks. I just don't want to even listen to it after the first time. I much much much prefer the stream-of-consciousness style (and Karl's voice) of Underworld proper to this.

Agree on this track. It actually reminds me of two other old UW tracks played on radio shows but unreleased (sorry I forget their names): one where Karl talks about a bus driver who eats pecan sandies, and the other has a Charles Bukowski spoken word sample. First had the same laid back vibe and a rare story by Karl that almost made linear sense rather than stream of consciousness, and the second had a guest vocal that I'd rather not have. Yep, great music on both of these Tea Time Dub Encounters, but the voice of Underworld is Karl, and I quite miss him here.

definitely agree with this for both of the new iggy pop collaborations. it doesn't bug me as much in regards to 'Bells & Circles', but it would've been great if karl had more input in 'I'll See Big'. maybe he'll (hopefully) have more of a prominence in the other two remaining tracks.. despite this- it's all still great music that i enjoy.

It makes me kind of sad that there's not more hype and discussion about this. A new Underworld EP! What more could a fan ask for?(rhetorical question!)

Is it the Iggy Pop involvement/vocals that's lessening the excitement?

Is it the semi-blah "World of Underworld" launch that has underwhelmed?

Yeah, it's not 1997 anymore, but I'm personally still excited by new UW tunes. These two cuts from the EP, well... they're musically very UW and welcome. But lyrically, a bit off putting. But I'm trying to approach this EP as a side project, in the spirit of T2's themes, and just like a soundtrack, it's fine on it's own, but not really what makes UW tick.

I don't really mind either of Pop's rants/recollections after numerous plays. I get the feeling (especially from the intro hot mic words on Big) that Rick set up a recorder and Iggy just gushed whatever nonsense, then they edited it to fit the tracks. Or maybe they played the music while Pop spouted extemporaneously, for inspiration. Either way, like it or not, R&K likely chose what words to include.

Part of me wonders ( and this was probably brought up before with Bells and Circles), if Karl had spoken the same dialog, would we be more forgiving? More embracing of "edgy" new streams of consciousness/notebook documentation?

I'm excited for some new Underworld. 24 bit preordered. I think this is just the beginning and we'll get more singles/EPs. This is just a separate project they did with Iggy Pop while working on ideas for Trainspotting 2. I think we'll get a series of EPs, perhaps an ambient one.

I like to see Underworld stretch their wings and try something different, but for some folk on here "you can't do that." They live in the past and want the 90s all over again.

For me, it’s Iggy. Like, if you just don’t give a shit or care for Iggy Pop, then you’re just outta luck on this EP. And that’s fine, not everything a band does is gonna be to everyone’s taste. That doesn’t mean it’s immune from criticism either. But I do like the backing tracks quite a bit. I’m a die hard Underworld fan and I’ll listen to literally anything they release.

The World of Underworld doesn’t impact my enjoyment of the new music, I just think it’s a really dubious way of making Spotify playlists seem more important than they are. But I hope it helps bring new listeners to their music.

I've enjoyed both tracks, but I agree that Iggy is a bit off-putting. His voice and words just aren't really the kind of thing that appeals to me, unlike Karl's, so I'm immediately just less excited. I'll still be grabbing the EP, but I can't see it being on regular rotation in the way a new UW tends to be.

That said, this is the first non-album UW release since, what, the Japanese Boy Boy Boy eleven years ago? Which is something in itself.

Do you mean retail CD release? Cause there have been plenty of vinyl non-album releases, like Long Slow Slippy and Baby Wants to Ride and yellow Rez.

If you're talking non-album CD releases, then there were The Bells The Bells, Live from the Roundhouse, and Rez (Bassnectar Remix). And many more if you add in promo CDs.

It’s a different kind of release and if anything a very loose underworld connection. More like
a rick & Iggy Pop release with Karl backing. It’s different and I like it. Second track easier to get in to then the first bit all good to me.

Ah yes, I forgot about the 12"s, my vinyl collection is relatively small and there's nothing on those releases that's warranted me getting them. They were mostly limited edition collectors things anyway, weren't they? There was the Scribble 12" too, if I remember correctly.
I'd say The Bells, The Bells and Live From the Roundhouse are both albums in a broad sense - one's a remix album and one's a live album - and I had no idea the Bassnectar remix had even been issued on CD! Even then, it's just the track and a radio edit. I'm not counting the promo CDs because they weren't given general release.

Anyway, I suppose my main point was this is the first large scale sizeable physical EP/single release we've had in the last ten years, after a decade of digital-only singles backed by anonymous remixes and the odd limited 12". For a band whose singles were once as essential listening as their albums, this is an interesting (and positive) move in my mind.

Nah. Lyrics like this are very un-underworld.

I’m not excited by this like I’ve been for most other releases. I’m sure I’ll be for the new album that I assume we’ve been hearing snippets of. This feels like a remix or a side project which for other favorite bands rarely interests me as well.

This is perfect and I love it. This new song is wonderful and even with K in support vocal duties this feels about as UW as anything for me. Felt perfectly in place on the ambient ballads playlist next to best mamgu.

As for world of underworld being underwhelming, I think it's too soon to judge a new project before seeing it get used and mature. You gonna judge Juanita or cups off the first 30 seconds too?

Remember, in 1996/1997 Underworld collaborated extensively with U2, and none of those recordings were ever released (aside from the arguable Moaner Was A Remix of Mofo theory).

Had those collaborations happened in a day and age when music could be spontaneously released, I bet we'd be seeing an EP release just like this. So even though I'm not a fan of Iggy and I'm not incredibly keen on his vocals taking the place of Karl's, I'm just so happy these collaborations are coming out and not being shelved permanently like the U2derworld tapes.

oh i have no problem with these existing. Good for Iggy and Underworld. Put out as much music as possible! I just don't like it.

Underworld has done loads of remixes and collabs, but i usually don't connect with them. (I don't typically like remixes of Underworld tracks as well. is that weird?) But i'm glad they exist for sure.

So, the Japan CD release (BRC576) is going to have 2 bonus tracks:

Bells & Circles (Instrumental)
Get Your Shirt (Instrumental)

So, those of you who wanted the tracks without Iggy Pop may be interested in that.

Japan also has some CD+T-shirt bundles (S, M, L, or XL). The t-shirt has the Teatime Dub Encounters logo on it. I found the bundles on Tower Records, HMV, Rakuten, and Amazon so far. BRC576TS, BRC576TM, BRC576TL, BRC576TXL

The Japan digital release (iTunes, Amazon, Ototoy, mora, etc.) will have a different bonus track:

Get Your Shirt (Radio Edit 1) (5:56 long vs. the EP version 7:30 long)

Mostly agree. I'm fine with the chorus and refrain singing, but the verse lyrics and phrasing are cringey imho. Musically, great stuff, as is the case with the other TTDE tracks.

Can't wait to hear the fourth cut from the EP. Regardless of Iggy's involvement, it's been fantastic to hear new UW music, very strong indeed.

did some mini-reviews and a bit of a summary;

Bells & Circles - Undoubtedly the best track on the EP. An exhilarating, thumping techno track that echoes back to the Riverrun Project. I reckon the closest track in comparison to this would be Phonestrap 6 / Autotrader 4, but even then, it still doesn't compare. It really sounds like Underworld on here are thriving with new and creative ideas. Enough has been said about the lyrics already, but personally, I'm fine with Iggy's rant. It has really grown on me since the surprising first listen at the Belfast gig. The uplifting "sunlight on my wings" refrain is definitely one of Underworld's catchiest lyrics.

Trapped - This track is a little bit of a departure from the first, but it's still great. A thumping, pulsating beat leading the way for Iggy to scream his stream-of-consciousness. There are hypnotic ambient pads near the end of the track and even some breaks too, almost echoing the style of Banstyle / Sappy's Curry.

I'll See Big - A nice, moody composition. Closely in the style of Santiago Cuatro and Motorhome from Barbara Barbara. The synths and percussion are very similar to those used in If Rah, further emphasising how these tracks were created right after Underworld's and Iggy's new albums. It's nice, but no standout in Underworld's already vast collection of brilliant ambient pieces.

Get Your Shirt - Reminds me of Peggy Sussed with the loud synths in the background. It is definitely catchy ("I signed, I signed on the dotted line, and I lost my shirt", stuck in my head!) and rhythmic, but I feel as though the EP version drones on a little too long. When the female backing vox kick in, I find it sounds like a circus tune... a bit silly indeed. Karl's voice would've fit very nicely on this track in particular.

Key Tracks: Bells & Circles, Trapped

With that being said, especially the last sentence, I think we can all agree we'd all rather have Karl's great vocals we're accustomed to. Of course it would've been better if Karl sang on all these songs (minus the adult lyrics, admittedly if Karl sang the same principles on Bells & Circles, it wouldn't be right), but it's great to see how Underworld are expanding their vast discography by collaborating with Iggy Pop of all people! The World of Underworld project has just begun and this has been a tremendous welcoming for it. We still have numerous new tracks coming our way so that will be very exciting. There really were great moments in this EP that distinctly reminded me of the Riverrun Project and even Second Toughest. The instrumental versions of Bells & Circles and Get Your Shirt will most definitely please fans who dislike Iggy's input.

1000%. without the shit High School-level rhyming Iggy lyrics. Underworld isn't just Rick - its Rick + Karl's voice + their choice of words. Its a huge part of what makes them loved by all of us.

/grumpyvoice :P No thanks. This isn't Underworld.

Kinda sorta? It's not like Get Your Shirt has all that much variation that I'd want to listen to 8 minutes of repeating beats. Take Moaner, if that song looped twice thru without the lyrics in the second half, it'd get quite boring. The lyrics make the track special. Stripping them would most def. hurt it.

What I'd love are these four musical pieces with Karl's beautiful words/poetry on top. I know I should be happy with anything new from UW, but this is an Underworld superfan website and so yeah. Iggy's definitely made these songs shit.

I'm getting used to Iggy on these tracks, despite his dated views on Bells & Circles.
The other thing that really strikes me is Esme's voice on Get Your Shirt. I know we've heard her before (heh, check her bio on her own website (https://www.esmebronwensmith.com/): "Her professional debut was as the soloist at the 2012 London Olympic Opening Ceremony"), but Esme's voice on this track is just gorgeous. It must be handy to have a trained soprano available when you want to try these things out.

The EP gets better with every listen. Keep doing new and different things R&K!

Anyone else fancy an Underworld track with Esme on lead vocals?

I think “Trapped” is the most successful of the collaborations. It doesn’t sound like UW and it doesn’t sound like Iggy; it’s something new and kind of cool unto itself, whereas the balance of the other tracks sound like perfectly good Underworld songs that Iggy ruined.

Surpisingly, this release has grown on me. I didn't think I would listen to it as often as I am.

Sometimes I like to put on my headphones and put on some Slow TV footage on my 60" 4K TV (on mute,of course) and I just sit back, zone out, and let the music and visuals take me away. It's quite relaxing. I don’t know if you folks know of Slow TV, but they are usually very long videos of various events or moments, like a train ride between cities or a fireplace crackling away, or shot of a beach with its ambience that go on for hours.

Anyway, I threw on this video...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tdnTjk3iAfg

and listenend to Teatime Dub Encounters and had quite an enjoyable immersive experience.

Underworld are also great when watching Slow TV train journeys, especially with Dubnobasswithmyheadman. ;)

Trapped is very Sigue Sigue Sputnik... I'm well aware that I'm probably the only person who thinks this is a good thing :-)

My Japanese CD arrived today. It's very nicely packaged, the title is printed in white onto the jewel case so it's raised up from the paper inlay, and there's a 20 page lyric insert that's orders of magnitude more accurate than most. It also seems to have an interview in it, but unlike the lyrics which are bilingual, that bit is in Japanese only. The 2 instrumentals are pretty much exactly that - no obvious changes, edits or extra bits. They missed a trick here, as they would be greatly improved by being Karl only and Esme only mixes. Hmm, I may have to do some edits myself...

And for good reason, the criticism is leveled at Iggy.

He's just not bringing much of anything good or relevant to the table on this release. He lets the music down tremendously.

4.1 out of 10. Lowest score Underworld’s ever received on Pitchfork. But then again they also gave the King of Snake remixes a 9.1.

Well, to be fair, it's a 4.7 ( arbitrary decimal place) and it's pitchfork, who are all over the map as far as quality reviews go. But yeah, I think the reviewer is spot on here.

I keep listening to these songs and trying to admire the sounds and think about what sentiments they were going for. But the lyrics are so generic and juvenile that it's tough not to wish "what if R&K had kept these to themselves?". One track in the spirit of T2's themes is plenty and a curiousity maybe. Four is Overkill.

Right! It did make me realize that the sounds aren't enough, and I love Karl even more because of these. I wonder if Iggy's fans will like this release or despise it? I don't imagine much backwards crossover in terms of fans and music taste. People who like techno tend to like rock as well. I don't think its the same in the other direction tho.

All you people unable to take a holiday from Karl's random stream of consciousness stuff. Good Lord. Karl seems more happy about it than most of you!

Get Your Shirt is on BBC 6 Music's A-List. Quite right too; it's great.

agreed, if i wanted to hear an old man ranting, i'm sure i could come up with
my own gripes.

mostly about back in my day, underworld used to do their own lyrics, vocals, improvs etc.

Nearly any other guest vocalist would have been just fine here... Iggy's out of touch improvisations are at best catchy. I think it works on Bells and Circles. The rest I don't know why I'd listen to if Underworld hadn't been involved.

For the love of God.

Please someone post their own mashups of the instrumentals with karls vocals from other tracks.

or

Have a competition, and karoake your own voice over the instrumental. (stems would be nice)

I'm sure people could come up with their own rants over it, that would be better.

You're not and it is a good thing! Also, Sputnik were heavily influenced by Suicide and Iggy has clearly picked up on that with his, "Let's here it for Johnny", riffing on 'Frankie Teardrop'.

...it's getting so much harder to be me... Get Your Shirt is a brilliant track. I'm excited that Japan is getting some instrumentals. I'm going to have to hunt that down.

Of course I do miss Karl's voice on the EP, but I'm sure his musical input is in there somewhere. Anyone know if the female on Get Your Shirt is related to Rick or Karl???

I've been listening to the EP again and again... Musically, very enjoyable. Lyrically, cringes and worse. I feel like if Karl had done the same vocals, the familiarity would partially forgive the literal words. But that wouldn't be what we'd expect from Underworld. We expect excellence and inspiration!

So, I treat the EP as some new music, great backing vocals by Esme Smith, and an indication that Underworld continue to challenge themselves and seek new collaborations.

Still, looking forward to a new record ( they claimed to be writing on the road) with Karl's distinct perspective.

Tldr: EP has great grooves, Iggy's lyrics stink. Miss Karl.
