So I used to run an FTP server for RTSR back in early aughts and I just found the backup.

Let me know if any of these recordings are needing to be re-circulated.

From 2001-2006-ish, I lived and breathed the RTSR FTP. You did the good work, 2dreamofluv! Back then, the bootlegs were a huge part of my UW education. I'd download a new or legacy show and devour it for a week. So much material to hear and catch the nuances and learn how UW used to structure a show. Last few years, yeah, I've torrented, but it's mostly just for the rare stuff. I used to feel compelled to collect every available gig. With static setlists since 2010, its not so important anymore. Still, I'm glad RTSR has been there for archival purposes and a lot of fun support!

did RTSR have the 2002 Hammerstein Ballroom recordings? I don't seem to remember ever having this.

I just came across this live vinyl bootleg on ebay:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Underworld-Two-Months-Live-Vinyl-LP-/311359871386?hash=item487e7e999a:g:1K8AAOSwBLlVVDm F

Two Months Live - no location given, just says "Unreleased Live 2000" (which is impossible if they're playing Two Months Off, so who knows what this is). Setlist:

1. Two Months Off
2. Born Slippy Nuxx
3. Moaner
4. Push Upstairs Born Slippy (?)
5. Dirty Epic
6. Shudder / King of Snake

I can't put the $60 down to find out right now, anyone know if there's a copy of this in circulation? Mentioning Dirty Epic and potentially original Born Slippy has me intrigued.

tracks 1-3 are from 2003, and the flip side, tracks 4-6 are from 2000. I'm curious, but not $60-for-a-vinyl-pressing-of-audience-recordings-I-already-have curious

(edit) boom. Here you go. I'm at work, and luckily this was actually on my iTunes cloud

https://www.sendspace.com/file/19c571

From the info:
This file was digitally recorded off Norwegian radio broadcast. Announcements etc. from the radio is removed, and it comes as a two full CD set. It fits on two 74 min CD-R(W)'s. Outstanding sound quality.

...I think there was an earlier radio broadcast out there a while ago, but it didn't have the full set.

That's all the non-commercially available complete live sets from soundboard sources that I've had on my portable device. It's rather complete for 1992-2010, also has the odd youfest 2012 show (which is also the only soundboard of that post barking setlist) and one of Karl's solo BBC shows. I hope I can make time soon to help get EVERYTHING back together and up on the tracker, but I've had some data loss in the last year or so, so we'll see what I still have kicking around. :\

I'd be very surprised if it wasn't already on the tracker, since I'm pretty sure that's where I got my copy (I uploaded the video in question).

A bit annoying I lost the Belfort 1998 recording, since YouTube now accepts longers videos, and I've always wanted to redo those ancient uploads...

is m4a lossless files , and if i convert them to FLAC do i have any loss of quality ?

I doubt he has the FLAC files. I think he only has these 192kbps. But if he does, holla atcha boy! :)

M4A is a container file rather than a codec like FLAC, so M4A can contain both lossless and lossy audio depending on the original file's quality. So the question is, are the M4A files you have actually lossless? If they are, I doubt you will lose any info converting over to FLAC as FLAC is a lossless format. Now if the M4A files you have are lossy, you can cannot upconvert the quality to FLAC.

Now if the M4A files you have are lossy, you can cannot upconvert the quality to FLAC.

Nope. The M4A files would have to be Apple Lossless files. In other words if a track is about 60% of the size of a CD track than you're good to convert to FLAC without losing quality, BUT if not, then it's an MP4 file that needs to remain lossy so leave it alone

95% of what I've downloaded is from laptops and machines that have died long ago, that I couldn't still seed if I wanted to, since the files themselves have changed (tags, naming, folder positions, etc).

I just don't think a torrent tracker service works for this because the demand is lower here. We're niche. A file server somewhere, like the old FTP, or a new mega account, is ideal.

I also hate torrenting because it becomes permanent the second you make the torrent available. Say you discover the name of an unreleased track, or discover a newer higher quality source, or you make new artwork for a show, you can't update that without making a new torrent. And you can't update your own local files without breaking the ability to seed (or without setting up a seedbox which many don't have the time or interest to do).

I did see some PM's to seed stuff on the tracker, but I am not in a position to do so.

All my recordings have been moved to different drives, renamed, etc.

Also, I don't have constant highspeed internet either. (Only on weekends).

Maybe it is time to move the files to a storage locker or if someone wants to host
a resilio link type server, maybe that would work.

As one of the two to respond, you are being quite demanding. This is all a labor of love and we are all quite busy. Noone is trying to keep things from you, we just have lives that prevent us from making trading 20 year old live sets a priority. I uploaded a RATHER complete collection that had those sets (except Glad to I think), and I can assure you flac vs mp3 isnt gonna make a lick of difference in audio quality considering the sources. These sets WILL resurface, someone here WILL get them up, it just might be a while.

Are you sending messages via this board or sending messages via the tracker? the latter isnt that great. The former works if they have chosen the same name there as here, which we do ask you to do upon registration. As for stuff not being seeded anymore the answer is that it WAS, when TheBang had a seedbox set up. Its quite some work to seed everything and real life often gets in the way. Yes we are niche. We also had fake accounts trying to get access to the tracker and implemented some security checks.

The original FTP btw, was run by John Morrissey for many years and used the old RTSR Yahoo group login details as authentication. There are still some things that havent been put on the tracker from this.

As for Mega, its better than using SendSpace (please dont use these places that have expiring links or make you wait to download or restrict when and what you can download). The Orb facebook group successfully uses a couple of Mega shares but it relies on the honesty of the users not to destroy the whole thing and a few key users to manage it. It is a closed facebook group but has thousands of members and its very active.

find it hard to believe that when you have donwloaded 70 GBs and can not find the time to seed back a bit

anyway , i am now at 2.5 ratio , will probably seed until i reach a 5.00 ratio but we need people who download to stay and seed

or maybe they are also 'giving back' by seeding close to 0.01

i had a member with a 0.03 ratio who tried to convince me that he has helped in other ways
That's me - yes, 0.03 is really bad, but there are reasons like some of the other members have mentioned already. I have a crap connection. It's supposed to be 20/1 Mbit, but in fact it is less than that - it's more like 14/0.6 Mbit. Some of the gigs I've downloaded twice, since I had some gigs on a pc that died.
Also, to get a higher ratio there must be someone demanding those particular gigs at the time you're online. I always turn off my pc when I go to sleep. And I keep most of the gigs (and all other Underworld material) on an external HD. I guess I just don't fit into the 'tracker segment' :D
I never really found out how to set up a tracker. TheBang, jetpig and others on these boards have helped me setting up the tracker. I did supply the John Peel promo cd and also an old Hamburg gig, which TheBang and jetpig put on the tracker. That's what I mean with 'helping in other ways' - sharing rare stuff, etc. But in your world, ratio is all that matters. And that's cool, I really appreciate that people are making the shows available / downloadable through the tracker.

find it hard to believe that when you have donwloaded 70 GBs and can not find the time to seed back a bit
The right time to seed back is when there is demand / requests - but I rarely check the tracker, sorry.

anyway , i am now at 2.5 ratio , will probably seed until i reach a 5.00 ratio but we need people who download to stay and seed
Yeah, keep us updated on your ratio ... nice, smug attitude

or maybe they are also 'giving back' by seeding close to 0.01
Or through other channels or in other ways. Who knows? You don't, obviously

Attitude aside, a valid point on the availability of these bootlegs that we have treasured could be made here. Despite efforts by many we've yet to find a reliable way to keep our cache of shows updated and available to others. I'd like to believe a "World of Underworld Live" is coming, but the realist in me says no.

What are reliable ways with non-expiring links (or some mechanism around that) we can use? Mega and Google drive seem strong possibilities, though Geocities, Altavista, and Photobucket all have a thing to say about that.

What are reliable ways with non-expiring links (or some mechanism around that) we can use? Mega and Google drive seem strong possibilities, though Geocities, Altavista, and Photobucket all have a thing to say about that.

Mega gives you 50gbs worth of upload space for free. I don't know what Google Drive gives you. There's also Dropbox, but you don't get a lot of space with free accounts.

GDrive is 15 and here's the problem, even 50gb isn't even halfway to enough for everything.

How much data is in the RTSR tracker? I have a very large dropbox account that i use for the Orbital OMT releases. Depending on how much there is, i could potentially house it there? We'd have to figure out a way of getting it to me and then uploading it all but it could be possible.

On the tracker? Nothing, It doesn't host files. In all the torrents on it? Hundreds of gigabytes. I'd put it between 275 and 500, but I'm really grasping at straws there, could be a bit more. I haven't looked at it all in one place since before the Olympics, I think, and that broadcast alone is pretty big.

Two issues:
1) Putting things in one place under one person still gives a single point of failure.
2) I don't know that any one person has all of it anymore, so it will all need to be collected. I'd be surprised if anything was actually lost to the ages though.

The solution that seems to be the best for ensuring these shows are accessible to new downloaders without relying on one or two individuals is going to be wider availability. Opening up RTSR to all isn't a great idea, no one here wants to have to moderate that closely, but I think it could be a good idea to get these shows out onto more public torrent networks like tribal mixes and what not, tagged with RTSR info of course. The biggest problem there is that if new sources of old shows turn up we can't really replace the old ones easily, but other internet randos not getting the latest and greatest isn't something I will lose sleep over, they can come here if they want that.

cloud storage, if large enough, would be a good place to collect files in the mean time for that project, though.

I am more than willing to help, too. I will gladly get another seedbox going once we have the collection somewhere. I think a good first step will be to write up an inventory list based off the contents of the torrents on the tracker. I am willing to take point on that, too, but I can't start for a week at least, if anyone else is up to do that.

I have been sorting through some old recording that I downloaded a while ago (probably from the tracker). The folder name was 'underworld - live - 1996 glastonbury' - however, I don't think underworld played glasto that year. The recording is great, including a slowed down rez. Does anyone have any idea what this is - am guessing it was miss labelled on the tracker and it might rng some bells with someone?

It's Organic. At the end of the set, Karl talks about how they SHOULD have been at Glastonbury that weekend (because Glasto was cancelled that year).

Someone listening to it misunderstood what was being said though, and tagged it as this non-existent Glasto set. I think you got it from the Horde FTP, because it was on there like that for a while. It was never on the tracker.

Unless I've got it mis-labeled, this file should be the full unedited show...

The sound quality isn't quite as good as the FM broadcast*

You know the set of live CDs Underworld put out, think it was like 14 shows, were there ever high quality cover artwork for these? I have lossless rips of these shows, but missing most of their artwork and the ones I could find were small Discogs scans. AFAIK, there were never any digital copies of the covers released, so the best you can do is scans from the releases.

Actually, I did find this graphic that I grabbed from the old Tomato site, but the covers are really small.

Also, some of the raw art is available on John Warwicker's site:

Thanks for this. Sadly, the artwork size is still pretty small. I always try to find the largest, highest quality artwork possible to include in my album folder. Most of the ones I found are crumby Discogs scans. I did go into his site's page source and grabbed all the UW artwork. Cheers for showing me this.

I found the site page, but it seems they're just using the Discogs scans...

just a bit of warning - if I remember correctly - while it was professionally recorded by the BBC, I don't think that the actual audio was recorded in lossless format (like, the BBC recorded it as mp3 for their archives, and burned it to disc)...

I love Karl's quip at the start. "Last time we played for 14 hours before we got chucked off the site. We could do that again if you like..."

The Pens / Dark Train / Pens thing I don't think they ever did elsewhere, Push Upstairs has this wildly different bright synthy outro I'd swear is a completely different track, and of course the ending is the legendary slow intro Rez / Cowgirl.

Great stuff! I really like the Fuji Rock cover.
This is dating me, but for every show I pulled from the old RTSR FTP, say 2002-2006, I would burn it to CD and make a cover. Nothing too artistic, usually just a band photo from the show. But I appreciate the need for a visual presence and permanence with the audio. Nice work and thank you for sharing.
