Oh man, I'm all over this one. Sounds great:

In 1999, Underworld's Karl Hyde began writing a public diary. Every day since then, Hyde has documented his thoughts, lyrical works-in-progress, poetry and biographical essays alongside 'found' visuals. For the last sixteen years, these entries have collectively created an on-going, utterly unique monologue on Underworld's website.

I Am Dogboy handpicks a selection of diary entries and rearranges them to create an autobiographical narrative that takes Hyde from childhood through to the exploratory early years of Underworld, an electronic act who have been peerless for the last twenty five years. Spliced throughout the narrative are standalone/abstract poetic pieces that offer occasional snapshots of life on the road and in the studio and give an insight into Hyde's singular style of lyric writing.

The book is beautifully designed by John Warwicker - Hyde's long time collaborator and co-founder of the Tomato collective. Karl Hyde and John Warwicker have previously published the typographic books Mmm... Skyscraper I Love You and In The Belly of St Paul.

Is anyone going to the Rough Trade East signing? I want to go but have tickets for John Carpenter the same night (booked last December!). The Facebook notification today indicated 6 pm start time at RTE, but their website makes it sound like the reading and signing are more from 730. Man what a bummer....

Yeah, I think we can look into that tonight. After the second show was added I wasn't real sure I wanted to deal with a Halloween crowd, but this Karl signing makes a switch much more attractive.

Nothing like having two personal music gods playing on the same date - never thought THAT was going to happen!

well, i was tempted just to get the book via Amazon, but the original artwork makes it worth the inflated cost. nearly $145 to ship to the US for the Underworld Editions Box... looking forward to receiving this package in the mail! :eek:

I received an email 30 minutes ago saying my order is being shipped. I ordered the Underworld Editions box and In the Belly of St. Paul. My email says I'll be receiving it on Thursday. Can't wait to read both books and see what piece of the artwork I got.

I went to the book reading at Home which just finished. Karl read a couple of passages - the one about Glasto was very entertaining. There was also a 'conversation' and questions from the audience. It was funny how at the end he thanked Rick for letting him have the night off. He did mentioned the project they were working on - visiting places where they used to live and listening to people's stiries but no further elaboration.

I don't know if this is known but he mentioned that a video exists of the Glasto Experimental... that exists in the archives and that it might be released "when Rick thinks the time is right"! They also have loads of studio footage etc in the archives.

Oh cool, I did not know that. There was no music. Karl did two readings, both were accompanied by a slide show of his photographs.

He also said they were working on many projects, but I think that's always the case!

So I noticed on Amazon UK that the book is 320 pages (same on the Faber website), but Amazon US says the book is 288 pages. Anyone know anything about this discrepancy? That's a lot of difference in pages.

305 numbered pages plus a few pages of photos/acknowledgements/legal gumpf at each end.

Got my dispatch email about 6pm last night, but the book was waiting for me when I got home.

In addition to the book, the art piece is signed.

The other things seem to be some type of diary writing by Karl, and then I got a brochure pass for a free transfer service courtesy of Crown Towers in Melbourne, Australia.

So if I ever get to Melbourne, I'll have transportation taken care of.

No photo or signature with ITBOSP, but not didn't expect either, so it's all good.

My piece of Karl ephemera is a hotel room key holder. I think the 2 a4 printouts are the same for everyone.

Interview with Karl about the book. Some interesting tidbits:

No current plans for another solo album.
He may write another autobiographical book that fills in the "famous years" that are missing from this book.
He and Rick have been writing while on the road this year.

Are the editions sold from the various websites the same? This is going on my Christmas list and the descriptions (specifically, page numbers) differ from site to site. "Santa" usually shops at Amazon US and I'd like to make sure it's the complete version.

It's all the same. The page variation in listings is due to changes in the book from the initial solicitation to the final product.

The only variation is the Underworld Edition which is exclusive to the Underworld Shop, and that is only different in the bundle of items included, not the book itself.

Speaking of which, if anyone is interested in the Underworld Edition and has been putting it off, there are only 12 copies left and then it is sold out.

Went to the book reading in Brussels tonight.
About 40 people were there, quite cozy!

During question time, Karl mentioned being tired of improvising for some time.
Until now, it seems, as he said they were ready again to see what could happen while improvising.
Sounds promising for those so called "special events" in Utrecht and London next year?!

It's an interesting idea, to me, that improvising became the mundane, and static setlists with mostly static renditions became the 'fresh' way to do things. They've got two new albums (plus some extras) of material since they proper improved a show. It will be interesting to see what goes down! Maybe Pricey's services will be required again?
