Great news! Listening to 'Techno Thang' now (only the sample, cannot buy the track for some reason).
Hopefully this is not itunes only...

I haven't been able to locate the iTunes link on the US store, but I just heard the sample of 'Techno Thang' on the UK digital iTunes.....Very, very nice. Sounds like a precursor to 'Air Towel', which I was hoping to hear. ---Jason

We're just over 2 months from release and no official announcement? I'd be a little skeptical on the date if not for it being in multiple locations. No glaring omissions from the b-side disc, but no surprises either. A few of those NUXX versions appear to be from live sets, curious to see if any of those are already floating around the tracker. Wonder if a STitI tour will follow or if they'll rest and forge ahead on new material. Looking forward to what's to come!
We knew this would happen, but I am really excited about this! Finally we can get some insight into the process of making STITI.
Some early NUXX live versions included:
Nuxx (From A4712 / Live At Zap Club, Brighton / 1994 / Remastered)
Nuxx (From A4733 / UW Live, Amsterdam / 1994 / Remastered)
Nuxx (From A2254 / Live At Liquid Room 2, Tokyo / 1994 / Remastered)

I am thrilled to learn of this but I am completely baffled as to why they keep adding these hideous colors to their album covers. These are two of th best album covers of all time and they come in bright yellow and whTever color STITI is now.

STITI played out live would be an amazing thing. Especially with the amount of b-sides associated with the release era.

This looks really great, overall. I'm very excited.
Notable omissions from the remasters:
Telematic
Carp Dreams... Koi
And, I would really have liked to have gotten a digital version of long Rowla. I should probably voice these wishes earlier in the remaster process. Time to figure out requests now for Beaucoup Fish?
So, a full disc of unreleased material, that sounds great. I'm surprised that there's so much available; moreso than even the Dubno era.
And, I am also excited about the Nuxx evolution disc. I like following their process, like, for example, Phonestrap, or Cowgirl on the Dubno deluxe. We know from the Tramway gig that Nuxx went through a lot of changes, BUT we don't have any other recordings of it from 1994, so it'll be great to hear all those early versions as they worked it out on stage.
I do wish we had another disc with a full live show like the Dubno deluxe (and the fact that there are soundboard (?) recordings from those four early 94 gigs is tantalizing), but I'm pretty happy with what we're getting.

The track listing looks great (even if the orange box is a bit odd), but like other people here, I wish there was even more audio, going down from 5 discs in the Dubno box to 4 is a bit of a disappointment. I agree that adding a live set from this era would have been even better, as they were really stunning live at the time. I don't mind it not being a completist set with all the 7" edits, b-sides and slight variations but Carp Dreams Koi, Telematic, the long Rowla and the edit of Juanita would have been nice to have on CD as they are all pretty hard to get hold of.
The amount of experimentation and layering up of different parts together on stage they were doing at the time was phenomenal - there was an amazing gig at (I think) the Kentish town forum around the time STITI was released here they played 2 sets, one more experimental/DnB (mostly from STITI) and the other more traditional (mostly from Dubno) - even just the first half of this gig would have made a great expansion to the box...
Actually, come to think of it, you know what would have made a great CD5/6 for this? Bootleg Babies or 'European Club gig' but remastered from proper recordings.
Let's hope there's a 'saved from the cutting room floor' from this one too!

Now live on the UW shop.
There's a free download of Born Slippy (original) (which sounds a bit over-compressed to me on a first listen) and "Techno Thing" (which is really nice) if you pre-order, which I did despite it being £5 more than Dubno for 1 CD less than Dubno. Well, at least it's not quite as orange as the first pics made it look...
There's also a set of 6 x 7" Tomato Art Prints, limited to 50, for £75, and a bundle with a t-shirt. If these were anything to do with the original artwork, I'd have been interested, but the designs didn't push my buttons. There is an original artwork t-shirt, but it's bundled with the 2CD not the 4CD.

Great stuff, my first encounter with UW was because of this album. Loved it... I hope Rick did as much effort on this remaster as he has on the Dubno. Using orginal midi files etc... This will spice up the quality of the record for sure.
I wish they've changed Underworldlive into a subscription service. Pay a fee per month and receive digital copies of demos / remixed / live / weird stuff etc... There is a lot more than the 2 CD's of raraties in the deluxe box.

.... despite it being £5 more than Dubno for 1 CD less than Dubno. . It says in details:
"The increased retail price charged here as compared to dubnobasswithmyheadman is a result of additional paper and packaging costs incurred by our label partner, Universal Music in achieving our design spec."
Just a reminder that like the dubno remaster, the digital "high quality mp3" that you get on the release date is just the original album (not the other stuff). There were a couple of disappointed folks last time because they thought they were getting the whole lot in a digital format.
I have published a summary of the pre order links here:

hmmm... first reaction HOLY SHIT THIS IS GONNA BE AWESOME!!!
then I quickly calmed down, and realized that this doesn't include the long version of Rowla (and a couple of other things, like Juantia (Edit) and Emerson's mix of 'Confusion' (but... I guess that one's more understandable)
but this could still be pretty interesting.
I do have to say though... I feel like the full disc of Nuxx versions seems more like a "special download for those who buy the 'ultra deluxe expensive box version" type of thing, than a "this is an additional cd, which makes the release an expensive box verison"
Know what I mean? - like the bonus downloads from Richie Hawtin's 'plastikman' box set or the "extra disc" for the Depeche Mode remix collection
having said all of that - I might still actually be more excited for this release than Dubno
it's all about disc three
Also - hi guys, I haven't been around in a while...

Interesting... The Underworld shop has the download listed as "Underworld - Techno Thing" and the shop pages say the same (I have quoted directly from the shop pages). I would be inclined to leave it as "Techno Thang" like you have it, its probably a typo and it will be cleared up once we see the credits.

Yeah, with the insane cost of shipping to the US, i think i will just do the 4 disc box and forgo the t-shirt bundle. Love UW as much as anyone, but it all adds up.
I've ordered stuff from the UK where the shipping has been more than the item list price!
Really excited for disc 3, and the remaster as well. Maybe i have badly mastered discs, but the two STITI CDs i have always need to be played with the volume WAY UP. Like, the opposite of the brickwall eq of latter years.

So for the super deluxe and a shirt, it's over $50 to ship to US. That's insane. I'm a massive UW fan, but I'm going to wait until it hits Amazon I think. Their merchandise vendor really is gouging the shipping.

I was just listening to Lowlands Festival 26/8/1995 and I wonder if the different "She said" lyrics between 2mins and 4mins in Born Slippy are what is going to be on the new Confusion the Waitress (She Said) track on disc 3.
Have to say, and although I might be the only one, I love the new colourful versions of the artwork and can't wait for the NUXX evolution disc as I have always preferred the Glasgow Sound City 94 version (I never get tired of that siren and I don't know why they didn't put it on the outro of the studio version) so I hope one of the versions on disc 4 is the same!

whew, checked again and all the sizes are available.
Pre-ordered the 4cd + shirt bundle and the vinyl, shipping came out to about $60 (while still expensive, it's not much more than just the super deluxe + shirt WITHOUT the vinyl)
Compared to last year, I ordered a similar set, while this is more expensive you do get a shirt (and 1 less cd) so it's not too bad
I don't plan on buying all the remasters of UW's albums and there were less UW b-sides/remixes released after the first two albums anyway so my pocket should be safe for the next few years:p

I'm much more excited for the unreleased/works in progress tracks than for the disc full of NUXX. Yeah, it's their signature tune. But how much can you dig into the live evolution? (This from a guy who did a NUXX megamix and has a lot of bootlegs). Maybe I'll be surprised. I remember buying a Moby Best Of with a full disc of "Move" remixes... As nd hey, they were all pretty different and unique.
I love UW, all phases and output, I do. But Beacoup Fish has always been my favorite era. Looking forward to hearing that set most.

It says in details: "The increased retail price charged here as compared to dubnobasswithmyheadman is a result of additional paper and packaging costs incurred by our label partner, Universal Music in achieving our design spec."Prices leaked on the 11th were:
Super Deluxe & album artwork T-Shirt – £70.00
Deluxe 2CD & album artwork T-Shirt – £35.00
Vinyl & album artwork T-Shirt – £40.00
Great news, wonder if there will be a RHF type gig /or mini tour.Would be in favour of that, just not at the RHF. The sound was bloody awful at the back.
Postage costs are insulting. Can almost fly to the UK to pick it up instead. That on top of the increased price from the Dubno set, and the extra fiver since the leak. I'm not a NUXX fan at all so a whole CD of NUXX is a bit much.
Mustn't grumble though. New stuff et al.

hmm... that does seem high for shipping (mmmaybe I'll wait for it to go on Amazon)
but I do really like that shirt - then again... how often am I really going to wear a graphic tee? Also, my UW 'dogboy' shirt shrunk really weirdly (especially the arms), and it looks like it's the same brand of shirt (judging by the collar)
My UW Britxon shirt shrunk in a weird way too. Its a shame because that was absolutely my favorite UW shirt.

Lol. this was one of the only lyrics debates i was 100% sure of; yannick wouldn't even entertain 'strays' as an option.

http://proxy.myembers.com/ is a shipping proxy based in the UK that will ship internationally. Basically you pay them a £5 commission and shipping costs and they will receive your item in the UK and forward it to you, wherever you are. Conservatively going this route with HMV saves me $45 off the UWLive shop. I now get to seriously weigh the costs of the lack of the shirt and not giving my money directly to the band...

Wow, just seen this post. I ordered on the official store immediately even though the shipping costs were high. But I did not for one second think the cost of the product itself would by nearly twice as much.
Now I have a problem with my account and can't even cancel my order......
I really don't think that the official site should use an official store that charges fans so much more. Especially as it's more likely that 'real fans' (you know what I mean) probably come via underworldlive.com and HMV or Amazon etc.
Edit: maybe its a HMV mistake, as its on Amazon for £65. Strange.

I only ordered from the UW store for Dubno because of the RFH ticket links.
STITI from HMV for me.
And a whole disc of Nuxx? It's a great track, but can't they do something... different?
There's a ton of stuff not on DNBWMHM 5CD I was thinking might be on the STITI remaster... which it isn't. There's a ton of stuff that - just like DNBWMHM - isn't on this. So really we're laying down a ton of cash for 1CD of things we haven't heard before and a bunch of live jams of "Nuxx".
Not even an official remaster of "European Club Gig". (Good thing I have a copy of that rare groove). Not even a DVD of promos - which really, given the time period and the mail order VHS 'Kiteless', would be an obvious release.
Why don't they release more stuff (a CD is dirt cheap to press, and even a single extra CD with 80 minutes of music would make it much more attractive, let alone 2 CD's)? Or better yet, make those full gigs which they clearly have in storage, downloadable with an order of the mega box set?
Another set of missed opportunities... but of course, I'll buy it, and I'll go to the gigs, and love it.

I'm actually really looking forward to the nuxx disc, I've always been fascinated by how their tracks develop over time. I sort of wish it went beyond the released version and covered the way it's continued to develop over the years - the added siren, pwm wiggle, the chords being moved to the middle, the euphoric piano arps (used a lot less recently) all add a lot to the track.
I do wish there was a lot more audio content though. There's room for whole extra 4CD box with the omitted harder to find b-sides and mixes, kiteless on DVD and 2 discs of "European Club Gig"/"Bootleg Babies" era live tracks. I think the more hardcore fans would be happier paying £65 for that than £28 for a box that's 50% tracks we already have.

Nuxx (From A2254 / Live At Liquid Room 2, Tokyo / 1994 / Remastered)
i am cross checking this with the gigography.
*update, all these are in the gigography
also, noticed this on the official site:
Instantly get previously unreleased track Techno Thing and Born Slippy instrumental when you pre-order, then on release you will get a high quality MP3 of the original album remastered.
so even there it's 'techno thing'... hmmm..

Yeah, sometimes they refer to it as "instrumental" or "original instrumental" or "breakbeat version" just as a way to distinguish it from the far more well-known NUXX version, which most people would identify as "Born Slippy".
As twicezero says, there are actually 2 versions of Born Slippy. One at 8:31 and one at 8:57.

Not sure if anyone is in the same boat, but when I preordered the box set a month ago, my credit card company had me verify that I really wanted to spend that kind of money overseas. I approved of the purchase and all seemed well.
I got a second alert tonight for the same thing and it made me think that I was getting charged twice for the box set. As it turns out, the purchase from a month ago was never actually posted to my credit card. Looks like Townsend Music (the third party seller) waited until shipping the box set to actually charge me.
By waiting a month, it ended up saving me $3 in currency conversions, so that's sort of worth the confusion?

In between all the samples posted, and previews, there's not really a point in getting it early, since it will be released shortly.
Most bands post streaming versions and put up samples on YouTube also. That is the reality of this day and age.

i wish i had seen your links 5 seconds ago.
but the super deluxe on the US itunes has it for $18.44 and amazon has it for $18.99.
i checked amazon first, but the link for the mp3 didn't show up for some reason.
there are copies of the boxset going for about $80-$85 also.

i am cross checking this with the gigography.
*update, all these are in the gigography
also, noticed this on the official site:
so even there it's 'techno thing'... hmmm..

i'm seeing this a 'techno thang' on itunes and amazon, so i guess that's going to be the name of the track.
by the way, ITUNES (which sucks) completely messes up the track titles and truncates a lot of the song names.... grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...

Basically, if you buy the album using our affiliate links (above), Born Dirty gets a small kickback (a couple percent) from the retailer (at no extra charge to you). It's a way to support the operation of this site.
Our iTunes affiliate account expired, so I have to set it up again, which will take a couple days, before I can generate new iTunes links.

Announcementnis likely to be the play karl teased in his diary a few days ago. Somethingnto do with can you hear me?
Current highlight is the ambiance in banstyle/sappys curry around the 5:45 to 6 minute mark. It's soooooo clear. Just gorgeous.

I'm really digging the vocal version of 'Rowla'
is it just me, or does it also sound vaguely familiar ... did they ever play it live (but with different lyrics)? Like during the pre-Beaucoup Fish tour... I remember Karl singing about a badger...

Just did a headphone listen and I am sure "they did not go back and use old midi files" to make this a master recording a masterpiece like the dubno version. Also still the annoying noise at the beginning of the songs (Confusion The Waitress / Juanita). In a remaster like this, this should have been removed?
Although I am very happy with the louder volume, compared with the Dubno it does not justify the high price.
But hé, it's Underworld right ;-)

Have to admit this is exactly how I feel about the album remaster. None of the wow moments that came with the Dubno remaster. The Super Deluxe packaging mentions that it was remastered by Miles ??? at Abbey Road. No mention of Rick at all. It certainly feels to me like your standard remaster job.
A missed opportunity I fear, but then we can't have everything. They've been touring a lot in the meantime and working on new material. Which would we rather have? Still, I think I'd have preferred them to do the full job on this album in the future rather than put it out now to meet a schedule / anniversary date.

More thoughtful review forthcoming but after just listening to it all evening in a drive through LA, the album sounds as good as it ever did. I'm not sure what the remaster achieved besides loudness and some clarity, but the Dubnobass remaster was like listening to a completely new album.
But as with the Dubnobass reissue, the artwork for STITI is dreadful. I do not understand this impulse to repackage their iconic albums in totally new artwork. They did a pretty cool thing by highlighting certain words from Savage's text and later making them the titles of pieces, but it just does not fit this record. I would love to have seen the true Dubnobass and STITI artwork in these deluxe formats. Alas.

Compared to DubNoBass, it's a bit skimpy... then again, both the superdeluxe of DubNo and SecondToughest are missing *several* released tracks (Where's "Carp Dreams... Koi", "Banstyle (remix)", and "Juanita, Short Cut"?).
Musically, I've just paid for one CD of unreleased stuff and a CD of frustratingly tantalising excepts from stonking live recordings. They could've filled out the set with a double CD of just one of the shows of the several we know exist ("European Club Gig", Amsterdam, Tokyo, Leicester, Glasgow) which would have made it a 6CD set worthy of the price tag.
Also, like DNB, there's not a DVD to finally put "Kiteless" into the digital world. My VHS is knackered now.
The artwork? It's just a fancy Tomato book thats quite expensive, and no use in terms of information or anything worth a second read. The individual Tomato books ("Mmmm SKyscraper" and "Bareback") are much better.
God, but not great. Still, "Bloody 1" is GREAT. Sure they played something like it live when I saw them in the 90's.

What was it like for you and Rick to remaster the album at Abbey Road of all places?
Ah, that was Rick's job. He's fantastic at getting the sound just right. I love the way he hears things and have total faith in him when it comes to the sound of our records. It was a huge job as most of the original record was recorded on 12 track tape and a lot of the instruments had to be re-recorded because the old keyboards & samplers no longer worked. He even had to track down an old 12 track tape machine that worked in order to transfer the old master recordings—it was an extremely painful process for him by all accounts and I didn't see him for months!

Just spent a bit of time catching up on a bunch of posts about the new Remaster Release. A lot of interesting comments!
Was really delighted to hear that they were getting this out a bit earlier than 2016.. hopefully they will probably do the same for the other releases up to AHDO and have one a year from now.
I picked the Super Deluxe up today in Tower Dublin and I must say I am delighted with the package. The book with essay and art is fantastic and I love how the coloured Super Deluxe box works as a set with Dubno box from last year.. it must be just the first two parts of a series as they remaster the rest of the albums. The artwork on the box has only changed for the Super Deluxe releases.. the single and double cd releases and the vinyl has stayed the same.. so I don't see the issue with having something new and special from Tomato for the Super Deluxe.. I love Tomato's work and the more they release the better!
A lot of people have commented on how it does not sound/feel as special as the Dubno release but I feel that this is a different beast altogether. I would say Rick wanted to give Dubno the attention it deserved considering how ground-breaking the album was for dance music in general. Hence the year spent remastering it and the subsequent world tour of the album. STITI deserves to be remastered but I'd prefer Rick take a step back and focus on new material while someone else give STITI a general remaster with his supervision - we cant get into a cycle of reliving the past while UW has so much more to give in the future!
STITI is a fantastic album, it is my personal favourite. IMO, while Dubno was the revolutionary breakout experiment that helped shape dance and techno music for decades to come, STITI is the first "settled" Underworld album where they express a consistency and honesty in their sound that accurately reflected their live show and experimental nature. No more UW#1 hangovers... this is full on UW#2 no holds barred... and it is glorious!
Yes, I know a lot of us here have heard a ton of disc 2 before through various sources but everyone is quick to forget that there is a world of UW fans who don't spend their time seeking that stuff out.. the 2 disc set will expose that music to a ton of new people which I think is great as I remember fondly the first times I listened and danced to many of the b-sides and demos from this era. So try to put it in perspective... this is a huge amount to release for the world to hear... not just us at BornDirty! :)
My favourite bits so far:
Always good to enjoy the original Born Slippy (far superior)
The full disc of NUXX is a bit much, but it is cool to hear high quality recordings of a lot of the samples they use live when improvising. I find it more interesting than enjoyable.
Pearl's Version 2 has an awesome 4 to the floor touch half way through which I love.. They do that when jamming live before seg-waying into another track.. always gets me going. It also has a touch of the 1996 european gig which is always a good thing :)
The vocal version of Rowla is really different.. great fresh perspective on it.
D & B Thing is what I feel the essay in the Book is getting at in terms of the sounds and feelings they were living with at the time. That breakbeat sound has a huge effect on the album as a whole and while I can see why this track never went to the full release it has so much in there that is like a blueprint for the album.. really fun and adventurous.
Tin Pearl is my new "I'm in a rush get out of my fucking way" song... love it.
Overall I am delighted I cashed out for this.. I love this era of Underworld and I think this collection captures it well :)

I am a HUGE geek when it comes to making playlists, ie. putting them all together in order of release (and since there's a whole CD + the .Nuxx cuts of unreleased material, in order of recording). Would anyone here be able to help me with this? The ones I'm having the hardest time plugging into any semblence of order would be the following (although 3 and 4 of the .Nuxx album were most helpful in putting in the date):
Disc 3: previously unreleased material
1. Bug
2. Confusion The Waitress (She Said)
3. D+B Thing
4. D’Arbly St
5. 4 Crowns
6. Rowla A1806
7. Bing Here
8. Techno Thang
9. Pearls Ver2
10. Bloody 1
Disc 4: Born Slippy (Nuxx) evolution – unreleased demos, live recordings
1. Nuxx A1796
2. Nuxx A2221 UW live (2 sets) Leicester M Dog 94
3. Nuxx A4712 Live @ Zap club Brighton Feb94
4. Nuxx A4733 UW live Amsterdam Apr94
5. Nuxx Liquid Room 94 A2254 UW Live Liquid Room 2 Tokyo
6. Nuxx from A1825
Thanks in advance for any assistance with this...

So I made a list of everything that was released in the STITI era that was NOT included on this release. As noted above, .Telematic, Carp Dreams....Koi, and the Extended Versions of Rowla and Confusion The Waitress weren't included
Anyway, here's the full list:
Banstyle (Alex Reece Mix) 05:39
Born Slippy .TELEMATIC 09:39
Born Slippy .NUXX (Short II) 03:45
Born Slippy .NUXX (Short I) 04:23
Born Slippy .NUXX (Darren Price Remix) 06:28
Born Slippy .NUXX (Darren Price Remix 2) 08:09
Confusion The Waitress (Remix) 07:32
Juanita (Promo Short Cut) 03:49
Pearl's Girl (Short Version) 03:50
Pearl's Girl (Radio Edit) 04:22
Pearl's Girl (Short) 04:25
Pearl's Girl (Tin There) (Edit Version) 05:00
Pearl's Girl (Tin There) (CDROM Version) 06:05
Pearl's Girl (Carp Dreams... Koi) 10:05
Rowla (Long Version) 08:40
I added them all up, and they total 91.51. If you took out the 2 Darren Price Remixes of .Nuxx (which are still available readily on the .Nuxx Maxi-Single release), they could have easily fit everything else onto another disc. While I do appreciate what was put on the 4CD release, it would have been nice (as one who's a completist) to have better copies of these tracks (not all of which I have, either).
*sighs* Oh, well, maybe we can get requests in for rare tracks off of BF that should get put on the Super Deluxe of that release (thinking of the Italian KoS CD in particular).

11-23-2015, 06:53 AM
Yeah, but a lot of that is redundant. I don't see the point including multiple shorter edits when the full track is already included.
I would have liked to have seen these released though, and they would all fit on one CD:
Juanita (Promo Short Cut) 03:49
Rowla (Long Version) 08:40
Confusion The Waitress (Remix) 07:32
Pearl's Girl (Carp Dreams... Koi) 10:05
Banstyle (Alex Reece Mix) 05:39
Born Slippy .TELEMATIC 09:39
Born Slippy .NUXX (Darren Price Remix) 06:28
Born Slippy .NUXX (Darren Price Remix 2) 08:09
If they release all the remixes for BF, it will be like a 9 disc boxset. completionists should expect disappointment
i also never heard Karl say "confusion the waitress" in the song before. i have heard it on the old versions, but i never understood what he was saying or that he was actually saying words.
overall, i am very happy with the remaster.
boxset is a little pricey for what it is though.
also not a huge fan of the new pink artwork.

First release where most of the remixes are by other artists though, so I don't mind if they leave most of them off. I do hope they include some of the vinyl only remixes though, like Push Adam Beyer Remix 2 and the unedited versions of the Jumbo remixes. Oh, and maybe a proper release for the Bruce Lee Hype & Zinc remix?

Yeah, but a lot of that is redundant. I don't see the point including multiple shorter edits when the full track is already included. I would have liked to have seen these released though, and they would all fit on one CD: Juanita (Promo Short Cut) 03:49 Rowla (Long Version) 08:40 Confusion The Waitress (Remix) 07:32 Pearl's Girl (Carp Dreams... Koi) 10:05 Banstyle (Alex Reece Mix) 05:39 Born Slippy .TELEMATIC 09:39 Born Slippy .NUXX (Darren Price Remix) 06:28 Born Slippy .NUXX (Darren Price Remix 2) 08:09 If they release all the remixes for BF, it will be like a 9 disc boxset. completionists should expect disappointment i also never heard Karl say "confusion the waitress" in the song before. i have heard it on the old versions, but i never understood what he was saying or that he was actually saying words. overall, i am very happy with the remaster. boxset is a little pricey for what it is though. also not a huge fan of the new pink artwork.
the absence of the Juanita promo short cut is really no loss at all. There's a really sloppy edit at 0:29 which throws off the time signature momentarily, so the whole thing feel like a rushed hack job, even for just a limited promo release.
everything else you listed above, though, I would have loved to hear remastered.

If memory serves most of this stuff is circa '99-2000, so I reaaaaally hope some of it ends up on the Beaucoup Fish re-issue (if such a thing ever happens.) Much of the underworldlive.com stuff from that era trumps a lot of what ended up on disc 3 of the Second Toughest super deluxe set. It would be a shame to have it languish away forever on sad old 160 kbs mp3s. The "air towel" and "stagger" jams are especially good.
It actually isn't *that* much of a stretch of the imagination to assume they're hanging on to the old underworldlive.com stuff for a hypothetical Beaucoup Fish box set, since in terms of bonus (non-remix) tracks from that album, there isn't much apart from "please help me" to pad out a reissue. Since I'm fantasizing anyway, it would be great to have a disc of "best remixes by other people" (ie - micronauts' "bruce lee," salt city orchestra's "cups," jumbo remixes that don't fade out early, etc) and then a disc of highlights from the underworldlive tracks.

The remastered tracks sound amazing.
maybe it's just me.
but the remastering to me, is very subtle.
so much so, that i can't really tell what if anything was done to them.
i've listened through headphones, in a car, and on home speakers to all the tracks.
in fact the demos, sound a little noisy, with hiss, and other background sounds.
the album and b-sides sounds pretty much identical to the old cd, i havent done a
critical comparison, or with vinyl. but at some point i might check.

The remastering is very subtle on Disc 2. Born Slippy certainly sounds different, compression is different exposing distinct layers in the track. In particular, there is a bass drone starting at 2:37 and every 4 beats that is more prominent.
The biggest disappointment for me is Tin There which sounds more of a mess than ever. As soon as that "mesh" comes in, its just brick wall distortion all the way. The original version sounded warmer, with the softer drums slightly masking the distortion.
Deep Arch and Deep Pan are crisper, but I don't see the real benefit in remastering these tracks.

Regarding potential extras for Beaucoup Fish box, yeah it would be nice to have high quality versions of UWlive stuff of that era, but I'm more interested in hearing stuff from the archives that we don't even know about yet. I mean, how many of us knew about Bug or Bing Here or Bloody 1 until last week? I'm sure we'll get the typical LP, singles, remixes, but I personally can't wait for new old tracks. Though if they want to remaster Blue Mountain jam, that'd be fine, too!
Regarding STITI remaster, very pleased with the bonus discs and more listenable LP. The singles and EP sound quality never bothered me like the murky, Quiet LP. Really digging the outtakes, they are getting heavy rotation, up there with the live dubno improvs

It is very subtle that I can hear. I think my only gripe on the original release was that the tracks were mastered at too low a volume. For example with Banstyle - from the original Lossless track I had to boost the volume setting up 25% to get it at the same level as the remastered version. Other than that, STITI was flawless. Still my favourite UW LP.
btw - digging the Born Slippy evolution disc... I had thought I heard every version possible! :D

love STiTI. that said, I can barely notice any differences in the remastered. Here and there maybe.
The NUXX bonus disc is a total waste on me tho as that version is easily my least favorite version of the track. Its the most unrealized version. Listened thru each one once but I suspect that disc will get no more play on this end.
The unreleased track, however, will! Didn't expect to love them as much as I am after my first listen. Its hard to jump into that STiTI mindset after so many years but when it finally clicked, it all felt so right.

Regarding the NUXX disc, a few observations:
1) the live jams... I realize the song was still in progress in 1994, and that the live versions are heavily improvised, but they sound kind of random to me, by UW standards. That is, overloaded with drum loops (including plenty of 808 hihats), not really coherent. Also, maybe its a product of where they were in terms of live performances at the time, but I felt like a lot of the sample and beats dropped in at random, not in conjunction with Karl's vocals, which even back then we're pretty much fixed for NUXX. I need to revisit the older live boots as I may be forgetting how freeform they really were!
2) was NUXX always planned as the BIG single? As its a remix on the original Born Slippy disc and we all know the Trainspotting Legend, I'd think not. So then, anyone else surprised by how many versions of NUXX they dug up for the box set? Then again, with the reel and take names sprinkled about the b sides and dubno rarities, maybe there are many more versions of other tracks, probably a lot of random or unfinished jams....but imagine if your favorite tracks had wildly different versions! Bet it's the case. Yeah, tracks develop a lot over the recording process, or in the case of tracks like ALAF, over the years. But decisions are made and elements are dropped. I'd be interested in hearing songs in a less recognisable state rather than remixes or subtle versions of the final cut.
Just some thoughts!

Is Nuxx is a remix of Born Slippy?
Or is the "Born Slippy" title a creative decision for the Born Slippy release - (Born Slippy, Born Slippy .NUXX, Born Slippy .TEL EMATIC).
I can hear more similarity between Nuxx and "Telematic", but I don't hear much similarity with Born Slippy "Original" even now we have heard some of the early versions.

First I have to say, I am LOVING the disc of unreleased tracks. While I found the ones on 'Dubno' a bit more surprising... I didn't necessarily listen to them that often. Also, is it just me ... or do portions of "D+B Thing" sound a bit like "You Do Scribble"?
and the NUXX disc... I can kinda see what they wanted to do, but really... but it just put a big spotlight on the fact that they have many shows archived (and ... it kinda begs the question: why are they not selling the full shows digitally online?)
It also got me to go back and listen to my old bootlegs from the '95/'96 era... I do find it a bit surprising that the version of "Born Slippy" where it's the original 'instrumental' with the NUXX lyrics over it wasn't included on this boxset, as it was performed that way (at least once)

Thanks -1 I have the Glasgow gig- I still have the tape I recorded it off Radio1 on all those years ago! Also have the extra track at the end thanks to the tracker! Listening to the nuxx disc and the Glasgow gig I think nuxx has always been a separate track from 'original born slippy' and that they used some elements of nuxx with samples that became born slippy in the Jam version at the end of the Glasgow gig.
For me born slippy sounds like STITI era and nuxx like dubno era with a slight evolution/polish into what we know as born slippy .nuxx. I am still to hear a version of 'original born slippy' with nuxx lyrics. Are there any earlier recordings (bootlegs) around with (or without) nuxx on before Glasgow 94 (not including new STITI nuxx versions)?
I think it's a bit like dirty with guitar, epic, etc versions but they are less similar and I agree with Holden's earlier post that they just put them together on the born slippy release because 'original bs' was the new release but nuxx was going to sell well because of trainspotting.
I think I'm going to refer to nuxx simply as nuxx rather than born slippy .nuxx now and the same with tel ematic!

The Born Slippy ep was out waaaaay before trainspotting... right?
Yep. But as it was an EP, featuring non-album tracks, you certainly could say they were angling for a hit. A couple years later, that had it, oh how they had it!
i guess my point is, with all the NUXX versions, the extensive but pretty fixed set of lyrics (though the live versions do have an extra few lines), it seems they really loved this track, long before it became their signature tune. Unless there are reels of versions of many other tracks that we've not heard.
i find it interesting how tracks like "Always Loved a Film" and (You Do)"Scribble" and Biro the Leggy/"Beautiful Burnout take years to gel, and at what point do they decide it's done? Personally, i like the Silver Boots version of ALAF much more than the eventual official album release, and YDS is so much more emphatic than Scribble, but that's just me. As for NUXX, it seems like they solved the question of what parts to include fairly early, though samples and beats from the formative stage still crop up in live versions to this day.

Just got around to listening to the B-sides disc, and you are so correct. "Tin There" sounds terrible now. Even though it's a heavy track with lots of loops piling up at once, all of them were still discernible on the Pearls Girl EP and Wipeout 2097. The "Remastering" of this track is textbook brickwalling.
Glad that the LP is now at a more consistent volume, but yeah, i agree with previous sentiments that there aren't that many revelation moments when you hear something for the first time that was hidden in the mix, as was the case with the dubno remaster. Disc 3 is the gem here, though.

what i'm missing from this re-release (i won't talk about the boxset yet, since I STILL DON'T HAVE MINE DAMN YOU HMV CANADA D:<) is the little odds and ends that the Dubno one had. For Dubno, we had a DAT tape with an alternative tracklist, proper demos and never heard before tracks. STITI only has 'excercises', with this i mean that they're proto versions of some tracks, a couple of tracks that could be demos and that's about it. The only thing that amazed me of the 3rd disc was the extended mix of Banstyle (the one that comes in the .NUXX ep), 4 crowns (too short, sad thing) and techno thang (which is good, but it sounds like someone was having fun with the desk). the other stuff is just leftovers.
now i see this thing as a rushed effort to add another boxset to the collection.
and i expect the Beaucoup Fish boxset to have proper demos (cape ffuno would be nice) and finished tracks. and the box has to be red. IT HAS TO BE RED.

Well, there's the price one is willing to pay for the product, and then there's the cost of shipping. I think the complaint is with the latter. The music, box, art, limited edition bragging rights...yes, the value varies by individual. The music, box, art, limited edition bragging rights...yes, the value varies by individual. But complaining about getting gouged on shipping is a valid complaint, because it makes already expensive products prohibitively so.
to me, shipping price is also a part of getting it.
again, i wonder if anyone would still buy the boxset even if the
shipping was reasonable or low.
so, it really doesn't matter overall, because if you've made up
your mind that it is too expensive to begin with, then the shipping
cost wouldn't impact it.
to me, whatever it costs overall is it, period.

Then you resign yourself to getting fleeced for no added value. Yeah, the boxes were expensive, but I justified them by funding different sources (eg Amazon) and not wasting my hard earned on shipping from the UK. I miss your point that it costs what it costs...that's only true if there's only one way to purchase something.

i'm only referring to the 'barbara, barbara' boxset, not the other ones.
originally, it was an exclusive to underworldlive, so there was only one way to get it.
sure, people could look for aftermarket copies now.
but if you want to guarantee getting one, that was the only way to get it.
with the other boxsets, sure people definitely shop around, which i also
do.

The shipping costs weren't $100.
Those costs weren't costs, they were marked up substantially. Whoever fulfilled those orders either made a mistake or wanted to screw nonUK residents. Simple as that. if i can ship a CASE of wine- 12 bottles - from a small winery in ITALY to the US for less than that, I think a simple boxset would be FAR less.

i think we need to stop talking about shipping prices and such here.
and either move it here:

or to its own thread.
i'd rather talk about how great the second toughest box set is,
as opposed to the griping about costs in general.

Time to bump an ancient thread. I just realized I don't actually have this anywhere, and I've just listened on Spotify all this time. Anywhere to get hi-rez digital FLAC?
