Karl just announced on Lauren Laverne's Radio 6 show that they've covered Frankie Knuckles classic, Baby Wants To Ride.

She then played it, I heard a bit, but had to go back to work.

Press release I got sent:

Junior Boys Own to release a tribute to Frankie Knuckles, the undisputed Godfather of house, on 31st March, the 1-year anniversary of his passing.

· Stream and download available now via The Elton John AIDS Foundation website.
· Vinyl available to pre-order now

In celebration of Knuckles’ life and music, two of the label’s cornerstone acts - Underworld and Heller & Farley - have joined forces for the first time to record a version of the Chicago classic “Baby Wants To Ride”.

“Baby Wants To Ride” will be released digitally and on limited edition 12” vinyl by Junior Boys Own/Caroline International. All proceeds of the record will go to the Frankie Knuckles Fund (part of the Elton John AIDS Foundation).

On the continued influence of Frankie Knuckles:

‘My relationship with Frankie goes back a long way. Twenty-five years ago, Frankie championed the early music Pete Heller and I made and many of the first releases on Junior Boys Own. He helped turn a group of suburban London music fans into DJs and producers who could travel the world, simply by his patronage.’ Terry Farley

‘As the creator of house music we owe Frankie a huge debt. Karl and I have always seen Frankie as the source and, as Underworld, we’re always swimming in his river.’ Rick Smith (Underworld)

‘When difficult decisions had to be made at the label, I’d often ask myself, “What would Frankie do?’ This meant we should approach the problem with love and respect for the music as our first concern.” Steven Hall (Junior Boys Own)

"It's fabulous. I have always LOVED Underworld. This is a great track and tribute to Frankie. Thanks to everyone involved from me and everyone
at the Elton John AIDS Foundation.” Sir Elton John (Elton John AIDS Foundation)

Iconic dance label Junior Boy’s Own is one of the most consistently successful UK dance labels. They have previously released records by – among many others – the Chemical Brothers, X-Press 2, the Ballistic Brothers and Black Science Orchestra. Underworld and Farley & Heller were among the first acts signed to the label in the early ’90s.

The Frankie Knuckles Fund was established by Defmix and the Elton John AIDS Foundation in Knuckles’ memory, following his passing on 31st March 2014. The fund receives donations for the charity’s work with men at high risk of HIV in Africa as well as African communities in the UK, and African American communities in the U.S.A.

The digital and 12” releases will be available to buy or pre-order from 13.00 GMT 12th February 2015 at www.babywantstoride.com. By ordering direct, you ensure that the proceeds go direct to the charity, without any retailer margin deductions. The limited edition of 1,000 vinyl 12”s and the digital bundle are available at babywantstoride.com as “Pay What You Want” (subject to a minimum of £12 plus shipping for the vinyl and £3 for the digital bundle).

The “Baby Wants To Ride” release has been supported by a team all of whom have given their time and services for free, including: 9PR, Abbey Road Mastering, Beatink Inc., Caroline International, Hub II Studio, Magnum PR, Mark James Works, Townsend Music, Turner Hall, Viaduct Promotions, Vinyl Factory and Your Army.

Never imagined Elton John to be an Underworld fan too :)

So is Barry Manilow. His music isn't to my taste, but I like the guy.

Loved the snippet I heard and am so proud of the guys for doing this. That's my band! :)

I admit that I'm a transplanted Chicagoan; I wasn't here during the original house era. But one of my fondest memories is from the summer after I arrived, when the city invited Knuckles to DJ as part of their free outdoor dancing series in the Loop - even having Mayor Daley officially declare the occasion Frankie Knuckles Day. I rushed over after work and had barely reached the dance floor when a fellow I'd never seen before in my life wandered past with a "Wanna dance?"...and we didn't stop for the rest of the night. He gave me a history of sorts, pointing out figures such as Jamie Principle hanging out next on Frankie on stage, trading old-skool moves ("remember this one?") with the guy next to us, joining in a "Music Box! Music Box!" chorus of regulars paying tribute to their favorite club. Wish I could remember his name because it was the most joyous welcome to Chicago I could have had.

It embodied the ideal of people from all classes and races coming together to celebrate the joy of music and dancing. Underworld share that spirit; that's why I love them so and why this tribute is so appropriate.

Okay, enough sentimental mush - get back to dancing, ya suckers! :)

Grabbed the digital download. I prefer the vs Heller & Farley version a little bit more than the vs Misterons. There's a bit more space and it feels larger to me. Both are awesome though. Good to have some new from the boys!

Scribble (backing Ah-Ah and harmonizing the main refrain) and ALAF (backing heaven and the rhythym).

i guess so. since they're doing a remix of another song.

but then again, they are involved with it also.

(and Best Mamgu Ever but that's not really singing, just using samples of his voice in a cool stretched way). I do seem to remember him singing (along with with Karl) on some other tune during the livesets but I can't really remember which track it would have been so I might be imagining it.

*edit* I see jetpig posted a link already with Rick singing along with Scribble so that must have been it :)

That's debateable - they performed their mix of the Chemical Brothers "Leave Home" at live gigs in the early days.

Nope, I don't think the vinyl includes any digital version. At least not at the time of order. There might be a physical download code paper in the vinyl, but it doesn't seem to be that way in the product descriptions.

Scribble (backing "its okayyy" opposite Karl) and ALAF (backing heaven in time with Karl).
Only in the live versions though, yeah?

I was asking about album tracks. I did remember that Rick appears on "Vox Jam". I believe he also does backing vocals on Boy Boy Boy.

That was a remix though, and not really a cover. I think this might be their first cover proper.

I feel like it is so on the albums too, but discogs isn't helping. Esme smith is credited as backing vocals on alaf, but that's it. Karl's not even credited as vocals though. I will check my album tonight.

Did anyone else have a noticeable skip in the FLAC file at 7:44 in the UW vs Heller & Farley Mix? The 320k file was fine. Thanks in advance.

Other than that I really enjoying both versions. Love the bassline. Would be a trip if Underworld played it live this year.

OK, I was able to reproduce the skip in the FLAC while using VLC. I did not encounter it with other players. I think it's a bug in the playback engine of VLC and something specifically about the way the FLAC was encoded, rather than an error in the audio data itself. I was able to get it to skip at other points in the song by clicking around to different points of the file. I re-encoded the FLAC into FLAC again, and the resulting file played fine in VLC.

The Heller & Farley version is sooooo gooooood. That sound that comes in at 1:19ish is just wonderful, playing with Karl's voice placement and layering of him and Rick (and someone else too?)... I can't get enough.

what about "Good Day Today"?

didn't UW re-record the track, and vocals for the 'remix'?

When the work is commissioned by the original artist and the remixer is paid and it's around the general time of the original release, then I'd say it's a remix, regardless of how much production goes into it.

If it's created independently of the original artist, and the mechanical license fee for covers is paid, then it's a cover.

So, UW considers it their first cover:

http://www.theguardian.com/music/2015/mar/26/frankie-knuckles-house-dance-music-elton-john

Underworld had never covered a song before, although that didn’t dawn on them until they had finished. “Yeah, we didn’t actually realise until we had finished it,” laughs Hyde. “I grew up doing cover versions in a band as a teenager, so didn’t twig we’d never done one as Underworld! But that was good really, because it meant there wasn’t any apprehension of how we should approach a cover.”

It says right on the order site, the release date is April 13. That's true it does say that. But did it say that when it first went on sale? When they announced it, they said, "Junior Boys Own to release a tribute to Frankie Knuckles, the undisputed Godfather of house, on 31st March, the 1-year anniversary of his passing" However in reality they released the download earlier than that, and they're sending out the vinyl later than that...

Interesting! I would consider their remix of David Lynch's "Good Day Today" to approach cover version status, as the vocals sound like Karl and the main melody is redone, not sampled. But hey, its a fuzzy line, and if UW say so!

Don't really like torrenting stuff due to poor quality but I'm not paying again. Disappointing communication from the people managing the shop, no response to emails and I reckon they got posted out before the dispatch. No way it could have arrived on Saturday when it was supposedly dispatched at 6.02pm on Friday.

The UK 4 Track Promo CD sold for £73 on eBay yesterday. I missed out on an auction a few weeks ago where it sold for just under £10.

Mine arrived. If the record wasn't for charity, I might not have bought it. Feel scammed that for the price, I don't have a digital copy included. Well certainly by the time postage had been added on, £16 felt like a lot of money, but it did occur to me at the time that I could cancel and just get the downloads for £1 per track (or less for all four tracks). I agree that it would have been nice to get the downloads as a reward for shelling out £16, but they didn't say that we would. It seemed pretty clear to me that I would have to buy the downloads separately, (which so far I haven't done). The long wait for the vinyl also didn't help in terms of getting gratification for your cash. I wonder if they held off so that they could get "the first No1 in the new vinyl chart" as per this Underworld tweet yesterday, https://twitter.com/underworldlive/status/587629516194971648?lang=en-gb. (I've tried to google the chart - there's lots of stuff for "Q1 2015" sales, but I'm struggling to find the exact chart that the tweet referred to. Bored looking now...) .No way it could have arrived on Saturday when it was supposedly dispatched at 6.02pm on Friday. I'm not sure we can complain that the things arrived on Saturday when we weren't meant to get them til Monday.

I think it had more to do with the lead times for vinyl manufacturing. It seems like they released it (the digital files) fairly quickly after the track was completed, but vinyl manufacturing takes quite a bit of additional lead time before being ready.

So I really don't like the misterons mix here. The edit is better, but the 12" mix is aimless and doesn't really go anywhere. The heller and Farley mix on the other hand is fantastic. Odd that it worked out this way as I generally like the misterons take on things. Any other opinions out there?

It looks like it's not available in the US. It still seems to be available in the UK.

In any case, it looks like it's available for purchase here, if you click on the "Purchase options":
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Baby-Wants-Underworld-Heller-Farley/dp/B00TM3PKI8

I'm not sure how strict Amazon is on their geo-restrictions. You may need a proxy and/or a new non-US Amazon account. But they might also require a UK credit card billing address. Edit: It turns out Amazon is really strict on their MP3 purchasing, and requires a credit card with a billing address in that country.

It also appears to still be available on iTunes Store Japan and iTunes UK (as well as a few other countries):
https://music.apple.com/jp/album/junior-boys-own-presents-baby-wants-to-ride-ep/964198938?l=en
https://music.apple.com/gb/album/junior-boys-own-presents-baby-wants-to-ride-ep/1444877107

Purchasing on those can be accomplished using the gift card trick. But maybe the best course of action would be to have someone in the UK purchase it from iTunes or Amazon and reimburse them.
