Dark & Long (Hall's Edit) User Submitted Video Contest

In the Dubno..... 20th Anniversary thread, some pointed out you can get the Dark and Long (Hall's Edit) Remaster from http://genero.tv/underworld/ and that there was a contest to make your own video for a $5,000 grand prize. On the band's Twitter and Facebook page yesterday there was a reminder about it.



Good luck if anyone on the dirty boards submitted a video.

Two hours left to submit. I see a familiar name or two - darktrain.jp for example. Mine was uploaded a few hours ago, but is awaiting approval before appearing on the site - apparently this can take up to 72 hours if there is a lot of activity near the deadline.

Well there you go, I already commented and liked yours. It's interesting how we (and darktrain.jp to a lesser extent) have made things that are very influenced by the dubno era videos, and the more generic filmmakers have often gone for sexy women with not many clothes on... I can't see Underworld going for that approach, no matter how well made those ones are.

I didn't really want to bring much focus on actual people into mine beyond it containing footage of walking into a forest, and legs at the end. It was something Tomato rarely did in the videos of the era (At least, when they did it was briefly or live footage of Underworld).

But who knows, maybe they're after something completely different to the Kiteless videos.

That's true - with these 'open creative brief' competitions you always run the risk of making something that isn't what they wanted, but for me the new video's visual language has to work with the record sleeve, Kiteless, the Skyscraper book and the original videos, because those things were so closely linked at the time.

Are there really only 4 of us in the competiton? Surely you don't get a name like "rossinabook" without hanging out on here, does anyone want to own up to that one?

Yeah, I'm a bit appalled and wonder if UW actually judged this contest themselves? I think I watched about half of the submissions, and there were many that were far superior to this one.

I noticed that they've removed all the Finalist and Winner tags from the videos. Maybe they didn't want to reveal it before it's announce on UW's Facebook? Or maybe they've had a change of heart?

I really hope that's the case - I watched at least a few seconds of all of them, and apart from the runner up, very few of the finalists struck me as the sort of video the band would pick, or even they best of their particular genre in the competiton. Darktrain.jp would have been my pick as a winner, but it wasn't even a finalist.

If they really did want the sort of video that has close-ups of pretty women putting on lipstick, then this one struck me as much better made, and it has a bit of that 'seaside postcard humour' to it too: http://genero.tv/watch-video/38960

i didnt like this video at all (aside from her being cute.) it was way too long in the car, and the cuts seemed random. they sometimes matched the music but often didnt. the creative continuity was bizarre: closeup of putting on lipstick followed by kissing the mannequin and leaving no lipstick marks behind.

all in all, really boring -- but i did like the overall color of the video.

i'm actually ok with the video, its that it uses
too many cliches (which im guilty of also).

driving, night time, rain, etc.

i wouldnt want to see a video that copies underworlds
original style from that era, because that would be too obvious.

its hard coming up with something original that works.

new order had that problem with the new versions
of ceremony and temptation.

The soft core porn one did win, and it's now 'premiered on UnderworldVEVO'.

At the risk of it sounding like sour grapes, this is so deeply at odds with the band's usual visual style that I can't help thinking Universal Music had a lot more to do with this choice than Rick and Karl did.

Universal's only a distributor. I don't think they're making any creative decisions on anything.

I wouldn't be surprised, however, if it were Genero.tv staff who picked everything.
