View Full Version : Saved from the cutting room floor mix* - Underworld vs The Misterons

*pieced together from old dats, floppy disks and cassette tapes by the misterons.
While compiling the 20th anniversary edition of "dubnobass..." the misterons kept a watchful eye on the music that never made the official release... Here's a peak at what they found.
https://soundcloud.com/underworld/saved-from-the-cutting-room-floor-mix-underworld-vs-the-misterons-1
.... and now I've had a chance to listen to some of it.... this is seriously amazing, could easily have been another disc in the box set!

The language makes it a bit unclear what this is. I hope it's not the bonus content we paid a shitload for being streamed for free!
That said, the music is giving me chills. Like peering through a portal into an alternate universe.

i was thinking these tracks might be the contents of the 6th cd of the japanese boxset (????) since there's no tracklist for it yet.
also, Dark & Long is that 2010 jam/mix freebie that came as a gift when someone sent feedback for the site update. it was really quiet back then, so it's nice to hear it in all its dynamic glory.
also, dogman go woof. dogman go woof is in the mix and i'm absolutely dying haha.

The translation said something alone the lines of the bonus tracks being taken from the 2005 Japanese tour dates.

Oh amazing! Just when I was whining for something new...this is as treat. Just skipping around the stream, it'll take several listens to fully absorb. But I'm really excited by these lost bits and pieces, they play like the alternate version of dubno, even more so than the dubno DAT, which was fun for including a few outakes and remixes, but felt random and certainly not as strong as the released LP. This mix, even though assembled 20 years later, just...feels....right!

That ending is what the FM mix of Mother Earth should have been, in my opinion.
There's a bit of the lyrics sung weirdly in that one. "I'm coming to get you, if you don't give up". Is that Karl? There's also what sounds like faint laughter at the end of that song.

This is absolutely awesome. I listened to it first the other day at work but you never really get a chance to absorb it fully when you are focussing on something else. The subtle differences and variations on sounds... and the way two sounds that were unrelated in previous releases are used together in this mix... it like Khouri said, an alternate universe or something... an offshoot of our Underworld reality. It feels like a whole album in itself... just love it.
Thanks for this. Can't wait for the release, can't wait for London. Great stuff!

yeah i think it will be pretty awkward if they end up being transparently better than some of the unreleased tracks on the "dubno" reissue we're getting next month, because they are definitely deserving of better treatment. they are startlingly good for "cast-offs" and are at least as good (and in some cases, better) than some of the bonus tracks that were *actually* released in 1994. makes me wonder what kind of logic dictated which tracks were released and which were shelved back then. like why release "215 miles" but resign that amazing version of "spoonman" to the "cutting room floor?"
King of Snake
09-13-2014, 08:20 AM
not to look a gift horse in the mouth but yeah it is kind of a shame. Even a 320kpbs mp3 would have been a big improvement. 128kpbs is so year 2000....

I don't think anything officially has been posted.
But, this is how I separated the tracks
Spoonman (Alt) - 9:29
Dark & Long (Alt) - 5:39
Mmm... Skyscraper? - 12:36
Dirty (Alt) - 15:20
Dirty (Ambiance) - 5:25
Mother Earth (Long Version) - 10:27
It'd be great to know what the actual tracks are - like, I'm curious if that song with the 'Skyscraper-ish' beats actually has a name, plus I hate just using "Alt" to differentiate mixes
Also - thanks for bringing this thread up, I hadn't listened to this mix in a long time!

I heard Go is 256kbps instead of the usual 128kbps. If possible, figure the best we can get. I wish UW would put it up on their Bandcamp. Tried tagging them and messaging them suggesting it.

It's better quality than the old 128kbps. Soundcloud claims their 256 AAC is equivalent to 320. But many of us want this in the best possible quality we can get. And this update is a step in that direction. Hopefully Rick and Karl will surprise us one day with proper lossless. But this is a nice upgrade.

Haha, yeah, I suspect the crapping of pants is mostly from first time listeners. This was released almost 6 years ago. I relistened to my 128 kbs version burnt into CD (!! Old skool roll), then the new rip. Pants weren't crapped. Sure, a better fidelity is always appreciated. I guess I spent too many years listening to 64 kbs bootlegs full of crowd noise to be too bothered. As long as the listening experience is enjoyable, without artifacts or distraction or distortion, I'm not too concerned about the bitrate, format or tracking down the best, biggest lossless version. The human ear can only discern so much, and as we all know, remastered doesn't always mean better (brick walls and all). Still, thanks for the new rip. Great mix, as it was and is! I possibly crapped for joy in 2014 from this essential mix!

Yup, definitely sounds better. You'd be surprised of the big difference between 128kbps to 256kbps. The lower the kbps the more crushed and claustrophobic it sounds. The rip we had cut off around 16khz, this one goes to 21khz. It makes a difference.

Ok, audiophiles. I know it's better, it sounds nice. It did 4 years back, too. That's all. It's an upgrade, appreciated, but let's not go insane.
And this is old news, but 128 to 256 mbs is not that discernible an improvement:

My bad, meant to say 256AAC. Technically, this is an M4A file and Soundcloud Go is 256AAC, which is the equivalent to a 320kbps. Before, ripping from Soundcloud online, you'd get a 128kbps file. This is why we're getting 21-22khz now if you have a Go account.
"256 AAC is equivalent, if not slightly better than 320 MP3. The high-frequency encoding is more efficient (more faithful to the original audio)."
Hence the audible difference. So, yes, those who want this in the best possible quality, there is reason to be excited. Is it ok for us to be happy?

Personally i'm used to the 128, but of course higher can sound better.
I've never been an audiophile. So even uncompressed 192/48 bluray
audio is better, but I don't have the equipment for it.
I used to listen to things on headphones a lot more in the 90's, and 00's.
But in the 10's, and 20's, i usually just listen on the computer, or in the car.
So, all this audio improvement isnt really that noticeable. And I don't have that
great of an audio system in my car (or previous one). I had a ghetto USB
speaker system that I used to hook up to my phone for playback.
Currently I am using car speakers, hooked up to a USB (Cassette player shaped) MP3
player (that uses microSD cards - how retro is that).
I got tired of choosing playlists through my phone, so I custom select tracks for the
microSD card, and switch them like albums or short playlists on the USB player.

I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 4 with a 256gb SD card and Poweramp Pro loaded. Poweramp is a great music player, which can handle and output 24 bit audio if your phone has the capability for 24 bit playback like the Note 4. Since my car stereo ain't that amazing, but it does have a stereo 1/8" in, I load the SD card AND phone data with 320kbps MP3s. Most of them are 44khz and some are 48khz if they were converted from 24 bit files with 48+khz. This allows me to have a shit ton of music on me at all times while I am out. I do plan on picking up a bigger SD card.
As for headphones, I have Audio Technica ATH-M50Xs.
For home stereo listening, I use my studio computer with a Roland MX-1 24/96 audio interface/mixer into Tannoy Reveal 802 studio monitors, which sound lovely.

I've done listening tests and I can't tell the difference between 256kbps mp3 and FLAC, so going a step further into 24/48 and such would be a total waste of time and money for me. I'm much more interested in the tunes than the sound quality over a certain point anyway.

i don't think i ever want to listen to bluetooth audio, or wireless. its just sounds like a hassle.
one of the reason i still use an ancient windows 7 phone, is it has

Yea, it really sucks the way phones are going, like we're going backwards. I also stay away from bluetooth. I recently picked up a Samsung Galaxy Tab S5E tablet in which you have to use a converter cable from the charger input that has an 1/8" jack.

Haha, I know! Well, we all need something to collect or improve upon in these crazy times.
But I really shouldn't have entered the fray...I was a 21 year old grad student listening to a CD player while the 18 year olds had new iPods. Old fart! I was fine with whatever bitrate I could download freely as long as it was listenable. I'm still pissed that my 2017 model car has no CD player and I have to rip to a USB (Bluetooth is poop). Where's the spontaneity of picking a daily album to listen to on your commute?
But I get it, we want and expect a certain quality now. Sure, I don't want to listen to music that sounds like crap. But as I said above, the latest remasters are often unlistenable, too. And as a producer, I'm very appreciative of anything released for free. Look, if you first heard "Born Slippy" on a dubbed cassette, a FLAC file might make your week. Or, you might always associate that first listen with the fidelity of it's time. I'm not interested in debating which "sounds better". Our listening experiences are unique.
By the way, been listening to digital versions of tracks from artists I first heard on some lo fi cassette dubs. Yeah, I hear new elements, but mostly I just enjoy the rediscovery and nostalgia. Upgrades are nice but the format debate is old and boring.
