Can't wait to crank up the BluRay to 11. This definitely is a huge thrill.
The 5 CD set is definitely for the life long fan in all of us. So much stuff.

Gonna be the first to say "shame it doesn't have all the b-sides and remixes from the era" - although this is blatantly for time reasons (the remaining Dark & Long versions would pretty much fill another CD for a start). Otherwise, pretty great. Cannot wait to hear CD4 in particular.

The press release is up too on their page and Facebook:
http://www.underworldlive.com/news/2014/06/dubnobasswithmyheadman-20th-anniversary-re-issue-show-2/
To coincide with the re-release of Dubnobasswithmyheadman, Underworld will play the album in full at a one-off show at London’s Royal Festival Hall on Saturday 11th October 2014. This show will offer fans a unique chance to see Underworld in one of the capital’s most iconic venues playing this classic album in its entirety for the first time. Tickets cost £35/£30 and are on general sale from 4th July.
AND
Dubnobasswithmyheadman is the first remastered work to be released, there are plans in place to remaster and reissue all of the Underworld’s studio albums in the next few years.

That's true, but persoanlly I'd rather have something like CD4 and CD5 then something that was already released.
The press release says CD5 is 'previously unreleased live rehearsal recorded in the band's home studio in 1993'

Fantastic news. A better reissue package than we could have reasonably hoped, not to mention the live show (which I will buy tickets for even though I've no idea whether I can travel to England or not).
It's astonishing to learn there's that much unreleased/alt material from the era considering how much they put out at the time. The album proper, the Dirty Epic, Cowgirl, Dark & Long singles plus Spikee/Dogman and the LI stuff and yet there's still more we haven't heard. What an astonishingly fertile era for the band. I hope that revisiting it has inspired Rick and Karl to write more together.

5CD set and blu-ray on order. Very nice looking set, and it hasn't *quite* made all my import CD singles obsolete.
Kyme Road, eh? As I was a Romford lad back in the 90s, I always wondered where Lemonworld actually was - looks like it was somewhere here:

sorry guys, i'm about to bring a bit of a happysad story:
i just recieved my canadian visa, so i need to save money. me, being the hysterical underworld fan i am, i honestly LUST for that boxset, so i'm willing to sacrifice the $150+ needed to pay for the records and for the shipping.
the problem is that i might not be able to listen to the whole thing, since all my records and players will end in storage until i can ship them from chile to canada. and that means a year and even more to settle down there. a boxset that big will take more than 2 months to land here (chilean post is the worst ever) and i might leave during january.
i'm in a bit of a disyuntive here, you see: i can order the boxset, even if it's a bit of a waste of money, because i need it for my travel things. but the thought is i might not be able to enjoy it until my things arrive from home. i would love to know if the boxset is a limited edition. because if it is limited, i'm screwed :(

but there's always room for improvement:

- what happened to the rest of the mixes that are missing?
definitely glad to see more demos and live tracks on discs 4 and 5.
the bluray audio will be cool too. but i doubt it is a 5.1 mix,

An Underworld seated concert? Worst nightmare I can imagine.
Let me get it straight: Dubnobasswithmyheadman is my favorite electronic music album. I would go to space to enjoy a full performed show of it and I didn't even dare to hope UW would make that happen one day. That said, I probably won't attend the RFH concert if it is seating only.
I have seen them performing live four times and these concerts always provided me fantastic feelings, both mentally and physically. My first UW gig in Riga (2006) was an exctatic experience I will never forget.
Not being able to dance on their act would be a real torture as their music live is for me all about dancing: enjoying the music with every part of your flesh.
I understand that this one show is more a kind of anniversary ceremony than a festival gig but I can't help but think that making it seating only is doing the wrong tribute to one of the most acclaimed Techno music albums of all time.
Karl, Rick, don't you agree (http://youtu.be/8ajr7InllAI?t=8m20s)?

How many membership fees are needed to get to the first row ´you think? Is it even possible?
Generous track listing but I miss the Born Slippy Jam.
Why is it so hard to add that to the CD5? Or will it have its own anniversary?

Hi everyone!
This is fantastic news! I am trying to figure out if I should get the 5CD set but the art on the box alone is probably going to sell it for me.
I am definitely ordering the vinyl however. That is the one album I do not have on vinyl and I have never really wanted to dish out the 60e that a lot of traders are asking for. I also like the idea that I purchased it at a time I was actively following the band rather than a retrospectively... I was barely 6 when the album came out originally.
It is great to have so much activity recently with Karl doing so much with Eno and now this.
I think a trip to London may be on the books.... :)

Sounds as if there will be seats, but that doesn't mean anyone's going to be seated. :)
Very envious of those who can be there. Unfortunately my budget and remaining time off work won't allow it. I'll be in Milwaukee instead listening to Gladys Knight from the front row, so take that ya suckers! ;)

Up late and can't sleep, so I decided to do some comparison between my CD rip of Cowgirl (FLAC) and the pre-order download WAV. There's a general boost of about 10 db, but the clipping alert on foobar never went off once, which is very good, addresses the volume issues of the past without sacrificing quality. Overall sound separation is VASTLY improved. Details are much easier to pick out, vocals are much cleaner, and texturing is phenomenal. I'm REALLY excited to hear this whole thing. October can't come soon enough.
edit: they say they're gonna give all the albums this treatment, is that gonna include Everything, Everything, you think?

Should be interesting to hear the works in progress.
It'll also be very nice to get some soundboard live versions of Bigmouth and Big Meat Show. According to the 2012 Anthology liner notes, Big Meat Show was a staple of the 92-93 shows, but no recordings are in circulation.
The RFH show will also mark the live debuts of Tongue, River of Bass, and M.E. (Mark II debut), and will be suitably appropriate to the seated nature of the venue. :)

probably just a basic menu.
other groups have released audio blurays like this.
i have one from tears for fears- the hurting.
as for remastering everything, everything, i hope so,
and if it would have ALL tracks, including the previous
audio only ones, that would be cool.
and the video remastered for HD, would be great.

It is stated that the studio albums are going to be subject to the remastering treatment, I do however hold out hope that this will be applied to EE also.
I am probably going to go for the Bluray or Vinyl but am waiting for the Bluray specs to see if there is any justification for the format as anything equal to or less than 24/96 would fit on a DVD. So my thoughts are the Bluray would be around 24/192 but at 66MB per minute, that would still leave around 20GB of space left after the album, which incidentally could fit the other 4 discs from the Super Deluxe box at the same high resolution.

Hmmm, aside from being remastered, I pretty much own most of the material. I was a little disappointed not to see Mother Earth (FM Mix) on the remixes CD. Being the Underworld junkie that I am though will prompt my need for the 5 Disc set. I'm sure the remastering alone will be well worth the quid. As far as flying to London... that won't happen unfortunately. I would love to hear M.E. live.

not sure if it will follow this format,
but a lot of bluray releases do:
3 versions of the album:

Features:
• Blu-ray - Audio Only
• High-Fidelity Pure Audio
• Playable on Blu-Ray player or PS3 console
• Audio taken from original master tapes and delivered in 24bit/96 khz

Decoding LPCM stream (track 2): Bitrate: 4608Kbps Sample Rate: 96KHz Channels: 2 Bits per sample: 24bit
Decoding DTS-HD stream (track 3): DTS-96/24 core Bitrate: 1536Kbps core + MLP data.Sample Rate: 96KHz Channels: 2 (DTS Master Audio 24bit)
Decoding TRUE-HD stream (track 4): AC3 core+TRUE-HD. Peak bitrate: 3366Kbps (core 640Kbps) Sample Rate: 96KHz (core 48Khz) Channels: 2
Pretty sure that you could still fit all of that on a DVD, the benefits of using a BD would be higher sample rate and the potential for more channels, unless it is just being used to charge a premium.
mostly likely you can rip it, but it will probably use BD+ encoding.
Easy :)
i expect that the bluray version masters are the source for the
other remasters.
I really hope not, for the sake of the vinyl.

Actually, I think the track selection on this has been very judicious. Of the potential candidates for inclusion, they didn't duplicate any of the content that had already been released on the 2012 Anthology (The Hump Groove Without a Doubt, Minniapolis, Big Meat Show, Why Why Why). And they've included some stuff that was previously vinyl only (The Hump Wild Beasts and Eclipse).

Since all of the tracks are coming from Midi files, I wish they would just release all of the individual sound tracks (bonus data dvd?) then we could make all of our own remixes...

Remixes by UW inc.Pricey could be okay though from the Dubno era, there are so many remixes by the boys that were essentially different tracks already! That's my kind of remix. Been so disappointed the past 10 or so years of producers either just adding a trendy drumloop to a classic UW song like cowgirl, dark and long...or taking the vocal loop and smacking it on whatever crap track they had lying around and calling it a remix
There are exceptions, but they are few.
Anyway...always prefer a new UW product to an external remix. Wonder if they will be faithful to the original dubnoversions in the live show or alter those that rarely/ never get played live?

I did a small comparison earlier in the thread, but it's just amazing. I've been listening to it a LOT since I got it. Not only are new sounds popping up that were buried before, but old sounds have new life and detail as well. 13 seconds in there's a click at the beginning of that loop that I'd never heard before and that trend just keeps on til the end. Karl's voice is clean and clear and simultaneously separated while blending perfectly with the mix. My favorite is the clapping sound that comes in at 3:01. The texture of that is so crisp and just...so dirty. It's glorious!

I put the .WAV files of both the new remaster and original Dubno record on a blank CD to compare them back to back when I drive around town. The original 1994 recording was pretty good. It holds up well. The best part was 'no bricking'. You could turn it up loud and your ears never got fatigued unlike a lot of today's recordings. But the new stuff is like listening to it for the first time all over again. There's way more separation of the sounds.
It's really remarkable all the new sounds that come to life that was said above. It's on par to The Beatles remasters in my view....(maybe due to Abbey Road).
I can't wait to hear the rest of the work...especially Spoonman and Dirty Epic.

Dubno always sounded quiet to me, but I guess I excused it because of the age. STITI is the record that really bothers me how murky the mix is...that'll be a fantastic remaster rerelease. But because BF is my favorite lp, I'm most excited for that, mostly for unreleased cuts, if any exist...

Birdstar - 4.51
I've received a promo and can confirm the level of detail in the remastering is brilliant and will be worth the purchase. Dirty Epic sounds much fresher.
The new tracks are complete bodies and don't feel like demos or
off cuts. Can You Feel Me is in a similar vain to M.E and is nice and chilled. Concord could have been on the album if CD had more memory. The vocal has a Cowgirl style effect on Karl's voice to give you an idea. Birdstar is a progressive grove with some nice under effects and is probably my favourite on first listen.

Getting takedown notices from UMG now for my upload of The Hump Wild Beasts. Who owns the original sound recording? Tomato? Do I have grounds to dispute the takedown under the premise that UMG own the remaster, not the original sound recording?
Why would you even consider disputing the takedown? You don't own the recording, so get it down.

Just because I'm not sure they even own the version they're claiming. Even if I dispute, it's already down, so.

He's talking about an upload of the original track on YouTube, not the promos for the new remaster. UMG used YouTube's Content ID matching system to issue blocks against all the tracks contained on the remaster, which, of course, matches against sound recordings of the original issue too, because Content ID is not so discriminating.
The question is whether UMG actually has distribution rights for the original recordings. If not, then the blocks could technically be disputed. And I think that's actually the case.

Kiss you, kiss you, dark & long
Thunder, thunder, lightning ahead
Thunder, thunder, lightning
Thunder thunder, lightning ahead
Now I kiss you dark & long
Me I'm just a waitress she said
I went and bought a new head she said
I look at you I believe in you she said
Screaming into the eye of the lens
I want to smash it up, I want to break it down
I want a wall of tears to wash away…
Thunder, thunder, lightning ahead
Thunder, thunder, lightning
Thunder, thunder, lightning ahead
Now I kiss you dark & long
Filled with tainted girls and motel frills
What a laugh…

I'm really enjoying the remastered Surfboy and I got a new appreciation for this track that sometimes I kind of considered slightly "filler" on Dubno. The remaster just sounds awesome, with very clear bass and all the sounds are really well defined and seperated and...smooth. It's actually quite a trippy track with lots of layers even though it's not the strongest "song" on the album.
Fuzz > Birdstar > Big Meat Show
Hey theres a new karlspeakloop to add to the collection:

Also noticed Lauren called it "Birdstar (Hall's Mix)".
Nice little anecdote from Annie Nightingale after Concorde - she just revealed that she went on tour with Freur as a DJ and fell off the stage. Didn't realise she was into them before they were Underworld.

In that 6 Music piece, Karl references 'recreating the album' and 'trying to do justice' to how it was originally performed. I'm a little concerned about that. I really hope Underworld give the Dubnobass tracks the live treatment that we've come to expect from the band. I'm dying to hear Dark And Long, Surfboy, Tongue, River of Bass and the rest deconstructed and put back together again live as they have so many of their great songs. We've been listening to Dubnobass for 20 years, we know what it sounds like. I'm hoping to go to London and hear a new version of the record, but maybe that's not what Underworld has in mind.

A republished interview with Karl from 1994. Mentions very early gigs, independant labels (JBO/WaxTrax), and early work flow for the band.
Any speculation about the upcoming maida vale session? I suspect some dub no stuff will be there, but doubt the whole thing will be dub no material. As long as they don't just play the same set they have been... i mean while I'd love a soundboard (finally) of that set, that'd be squandering a great opportunity to bring out something fresh, maybe even, dare I say it, new?

Guy I work with saw the crappy $20 earbuds I usually listen with and recommended Audio Technica ath-m50x - said I'd hear a difference without breaking the bank. Any recommendations for when I want to upgrade again?
Already hearing a difference in music of course (Now I know why I wasn't supposed to rip MP3's at 128 when I was younger...) but also even on Netflix.
And look at that, Dirty Epic (Dirty Ambi) has just been put up on youtube.

10-01-2014, 12:18 PM
The ATH-m50 is a great start. I'm in the same mid-fi ballpark with my DT770s. The next step up in the same vein (closed back over ear), according to the internet at large, would be the Mr Speakers Mad Dogs. They're a custom modded headphone that gets rave reviews all over. If you wanna branch out a bit, take a look at the Sennheiser HD 5xx or 6xx series. The HD 600 and 598 specifically are considered benchmark headphones, maybe not the absolute best of the best, but very good headphones that many can refer to for comparisons. They are open back and very well regarded. Less bass because the low frequencies don't have anything to bounce off, but more space between sounds as they have more air to work with and move. There is zero isolation though, you hear everything around you and everyone around you hears what you hear, so they're more of an at home set.
In order to prevent further derailment of this thread, check out reddit.com/r/headphones and head-fi.com. Head-fi starts to get into the snake oil side of audio gear with talk of cables making a huge difference and what not, but there's a lot of good info there too.
Sorry about your wallet....

Considering this has cost us all £50, money which they've had for over 3 months in a lot of cases by imploring us to pre-order to gain access to the pre-sale for the RFH gig, am I being unreasonable in my surprise and disappointment that MP3 downloads of just the first CD are available?

Considering this has cost us all £50, money which they've had for over 3 months in a lot of cases by imploring us to pre-order to gain access to the pre-sale for the RFH gig, am I being unreasonable in my surprise and disappointment that MP3 downloads of just the first CD are available?
I pre-ordered the reissue / remaster of Mogwai's "Come On Die Young" album and ALL of the extra content was available as an MP3 download through Topspin on the release date.
Depends on the band. For this I wasn't surprised. It had stated that only the remastered album was to be available for immediate download on release day. I consider the MP3's an added bonus, since I'll be waiting at least another week before I get the physical copies in the mail.

The last 30 seconds or so of Mother Earth, Karl's singing doesn't end at his last "Goodbye Mother Earth" line. Though likely the result of the remaster, his singing isn't audible after that line in the original, you can hear him breathe in but anything further was lost.

Woo digital download has arrived... I expect my Vinyl and CD this week. Going to enjoy listening to this all day at work today :)
EDIT: It is all about the extra Bass Vibration on River of Bass.... holy shit, my favourite groove just got better - actually cant wait to hear this song live.

Yup, he's right. I noticed it on the first listen. It's at about 6:41 into the song. You can hear Karl singing without any vocoder effects, whereas on the original, there's no singing at all. I think it's probably a remaster mistake.

Also came with a postcard - shows Karl and Rick "in rehearsals at royal festival hall 2014" - looks to be quite a minimal setup, they normally gig with a much bigger kit list. No Darren Emerson of Darren Price in view

it's probably a remaster mistake.
I'd be shocked if that is the case.. It is either something that got buried in the original mix and is now free to breath, or it is purposely included by Rick as a gesture to the original recording.
I couldn't fathom Rick letting anything slide... crazy genius that he is.

In the original, you can hear him breathe in and then start to say "It's". The rest of those two lines can only be heard in the remaster. I've checked in both the Dubnobass release and on my Mother Earth vinyl...
So it's really well embedded, or it's intentionally included, or even a mistake... But it being well embedded seems unlikely since you do hear him breathe in and say "It's". It cuts out in the original.
Yup, he's right.

For those of you lucky enough to have received the box set, I'm really looking forward to hearing some of your impressions of the bonus materials.
How is the live jam?
Are the B-sides remastered to the same quality as the album?
What are the standout demo tracks?
Hopefully, that will tide me over as my box ships to the US.

This remaster is divine. It really is like we've been listening to this thing with earplugs in for the last 20 years.
Stray observations:
- Sounds like echoes and reverb and so forth are far, far more clear in the mix than before. Vocal refrains I thought I'd effectively imprinted on my brain matter itself now sound brand new. See Dirty Epic for the best demonstration of this. The most epic Underworld track is even more epic-y.
- The "don't put your hand..." section of Spoonman has been improved considerably. That vocal track was always too low in the mix and was very difficult to turn up and jam to in the car and whatnot. Now it's loud and clear. I could chop it out and use it in a DJ mix now.
- I wonder if it's not too remastered in some parts. I can hear artifacts of some kind in Cowgirl's "everything everything" sample that I've never noticed before. I think it may be part of the original sample that was previously muffled because of mastering limitations. Mind you, this is an extreme nitpick and likely not something I would even notice or mention if I hadn't been listening to this for 20 years. Someone hearing this for the first time would fall in love with the song like we all have.
- In the pre-order download, Cowgirl has a very audible fuck up at exactly 3:01. A sound is WAY up in the mix and distorted. I hope that's an mp3 encoding issue and not present on the CD version.
- All the percussion and bass sounds are pristine and sound like they were created today. The whole thing just sounds vibrant and massive like it never has before. It is just so astonishing to me that this remaster has rendered the 1994 release as obsolete as it has. Even Surfboy, which I regarded as Dubnobass' one filler track, has emerged from this project with new value. I've heard it a million times but now it sings to me, the synth sounds especially.
- River of Bass is another that has been given brilliant new life. I always liked this tune but it struck me as quite sonically muddy. I thought that was intentional or at least effective in establishing the mood we all love about the song, but the remaster has revealed it to be an impeccably structured, deeply layered piece that I can now see as a precursor to other Underworld "ballads" like Best Mamgu and Stagger. I can hear every piece of it now, stuff I never noticed before -- vocal effects, percussion patterns, bass vibrations, etc. The only downside is that it's so dynamic that I might have to take it out of some of my more ambient playlists, because there's just too much going on. A good problem to have.
- Mother Earth is another song I always considered more on the chill side that the remaster has proven is more lively than I thought. If I didn't know better I'd say it was recorded by a live band. Nothing drastic here, though, just a good cobweb clearing. I really hope Rick plays the piano parts live on the Dubnobass tour. They're so organic in this song, I think they need the human touch live.
- The non-vocodor "It's a beautiful destination... for what it's worth" bit at the end of ME is definitely not in the original mix. I suppose only Rick can say if this was a mistake or not. In any case, it's so subtle that only nerds like us would notice it.

The Super Deluxe is now available on iTunes and you can hear 90-second samples: https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/dubnobasswithmyheadman-super/id902830630
Of all the alternate versions and other previously unreleased stuff I've heard, the only thing I'm uncertain ended up on Dubnobass in its most optimal form is Spoonman. The version from the Cutting Room Floor mix on Soundcloud and what you can hear in the iTunes sample are just so exciting and dramatic -- like the way they've performed it live during the Oblivion tour -- that they make the album version seem subdued. Now, it's possible that a less subdued version of Spoonman wouldn't work in the context of Dubnobass. But as a track to track comparison, I think I may prefer the one they left in the vault.

Hi there all, just joined the forum today! Big life long fan and can't wait for Saturday.
I received my copy of the 5 disc Deluxe set yesterday - and whilst I can agree with most comments on the excellent remastering of the original album, I have a big problem with discs 4 and 5 - especially 5 the Live jam. I would love to say they have had the same care and attention, but unfortunately not. I'm not sure if Rick took a break here or what, but the recordings have not been cleaned in any way from the original DATs it seems. CD 4 is hit and miss - some with audible tape hiss. Disc 5 we have very annoying crackle, tape hiss and clicks (especially audible on headphones), with the Improvs being the worst - it sometimes sounds like a crackly vinyl record playing. Now I'm not saying I am a Mastering expert, but this is not really exceptible with the technology available today. I am very disappointed with these. Anyone else think so? Are the Downloads the same?
Anyway - I spent 4 hours last night with my own software giving all these tracks a clean and the difference in the results are almost unbeliveable. I am happy to share these files if anyone is interested.

It's part of the hand claps, and it's present and distorted like that in the original too. The only problem is that it's been brought WAY up in the mix on the remaster. Too much. And yes, it's just the download; it's like that on the CD too. Shame.

Hi All,
Heres one for you all…
Received my box set yesterday - all good.
Looking at some posts on Facebook and saw this (see image below)
It's different artwork form the one I have. Mine looks just like the one shown on the Underworld website.
I know the sticker is upside down, but if you look at the typography / design (like the band running al the way across) you can see clear differences. Has anyone else got different artwork?

That's the back cover. I'm not ripping off the glued tracklisting from mine, but if you lift it up a little bit, you can see that it matches the picture that you posted. So, basically, since that guy's set looks sealed, it looks like that box got stickered and sealed upside-down and backwards.

Yours isn't just upside down, it's the wrong way round. You don't actually have different artwork, that's just the back of the box, not the front. Once you open it up and take the paper off the box (it may look like it's not removable, but it's easy to peel glue that won't damage box or paper if you're reasonably careful), yours will be back to normal.

Speaking of hearing new things in the remaster, on Dark & Long, the noodling bleepy line that's so prominent in the work-in-progress version and the "saved from the cutting room floor mix" (and the jam posted on uwlive.com in Dec. 2010) actually appears in the album version.
It makes a quick foreground appearance for 2 seconds at 6:41. But that's not even the most interesting part. After listening very closely, I realized that it emerged into the foreground at that point after having already been playing in the background for a large portion of the song.
I believe it actually starts in the background at around the 1:05 mark. It's buried way in the background, super-muffled and echoey, sounding like it's playing in a hall, 2 rooms away. As best as I can tell, it's playing in the background at the following times:
1:05 - 1:37
4:10 - 6:43
but it's most prominent and noticeable from 4:45 - 5:15 when most of the other sonic elements in the song are quiet. That melodic line was buried in the song this whole time, but we just didn't notice! It's much clearer in the remaster.

Well, the appearance of that bleeping arp (more prominentn in the "cutting room floor" mix / the "Dark&Long Jam" giveaway) at 6:41 was there for my in the original mix as well.
On the re-master you can you make it out better during the breakdown after 4:45, but it's still very much filtered and drowned in reverb.

Nah, that's "S.W.F.A.B.N.F.I.", the little improv between Thing In A Book and Spoon Deep from Sheffield 1994. It's close but Alabaster White Thing uses a bell-ier sound and has a different note pattern.

IMPORTANT: Nobody should be distributing or seeking mp3s of officially published tracks on these forums. There are rules written here somewhere about that. But this place shouldn't become somewhere for that - It doesn't matter if people have already bought the album and want an alternate version - this kind of practice should be nipped in the bud and stopped immediately.
Don't really know how I feel about any of this. What was released was released as they intended.. they are not "mistakes" or "glitches" when they are presented like that on every format - that is obviously how they were finished in the master file.
If by fixing hiss you mean that you have reduced or completely blocked out a frequency range then count me out. I'd like to think that the tracks were all provided in a cleaned state, clean enough that they can be enjoyed but not so much that the original and integral quality of the audio is damaged or undermined.
There is hiss on a live recording from 1992 because the recording happened to have hiss on it - any extra work done on it will damage the recording.
I'll take the hiss.

Now that I've received my super deluxe edition and ingested it fully, I'm sorry to say I'm not satisfied with the design.
I assumed the yellow slipcase was a kind of translucent thing or at something that otherwise covered up the proper black and white album. I was wrong. For some reason, this version of Dubnobass is yellow. It's plainly less attractive and I suppose they did it to differentiate the package from the others, but it really puts me off.
The contents of the book are beautiful and provocative but they are not Dubnobass. They are some other underworld record, perhaps one yet to be created. This seems like a missed opportunity to present the gorgeous and truly iconic original album imagery in a deluxe format, perhaps alongside other pieces from the era: the Cowgirl/Dirty Epic EP, Dark & Long, Skyscaper, etc. Again I stress that this work is beautiful, it's just not work that reflects this album. I'm utterly perplexed by this choice. Perhaps the thinking was that the original artwork would be reproduced for the vinyl reissue? Overall the Barking deluxe edition was the more successful object.
The John Savage essay is lovely though.

Having listened to Thing in a Book at LEAST weekly if not daily for the last two years (it fits very nicely in my walk to work) I can say without question it has had work done to it, and not just made louder, just that some odd ticks are still there. Rick talked about wanting to preserve each tiny moment as accurately as possible for the live rendition of the album, and I suspect a similar thought process played here. That or maybe it was intentional all along.
