A flurry of activity from Underworld;
Karl…
April 2013 will see the release of Karl Hyde’s debut solo LP, Edgeland. It features nine tracks that were recorded over a year in London with multi-instrumentalist and producer Leo Abrahams (whom Karl met whilst collaborating with Brian Eno on Pure Scenius). Edgeland is a graceful and meditative collection that explores the limitless possibilities of what late film director Anthony Minghella christened ‘esoteric Underworld’ – something that’s existed on record since Dubnobasswithmyheadman.
Edgeland is released in Japan on April 10th and across the rest of the world on April 22nd on deluxe CD/DVD, standard CD, download and 12" vinyl. It is also available for physical pre-order in the underworldlive shop. (http://t.opsp.in/j0fbs) The first 150 pre-orders from underworldlive (across all physical formats) will each receive a unique, signed and numbered photograph taken by Karl documenting the journeys through the edgelands that inspired the album. Each physical format purchase will also receive a digital version of the album in their inbox on the day of release (we of course aim to have pre-ordered physical stock with you on or very close to that date).
You can hear the first taster from Edgeland - 'Cut Clouds' and for a limited time only download the track for free here (http://t.opsp.in/r01j2)

Karl is currently rehearsing a new band in preparation for a series of live shows from the Spring onwards, the first of which is SonarSound in Tokyo on the 7th April 2013. More to be announced soon.

Rick…

As you may have read or heard on the world-wide-grapevine, Rick rolled straight out of his music directorial role on the London 2012 Opening Ceremony and into writing and recording the score for Danny Boyle’s new movie Trance. Staring James McAvoy, Vincent Cassel and Rosario Dawson, the film is due for release on March 27th 2013 in the UK.

You can check out the film’s trailer here

The free download of Cut Clouds appears in my iTunes as "Cut Clouds" by Leo Abrahams, album artist Karl Hyde. I've preordered too, 150 isn't a lot though!

Pre ordered too:)

Leo Abrahams is a great guitarist and collaborator of Brian Eno, and its known that he met Karl hyde during Pure Scenius project in 2009. Which was fantastic...

Track listing. Sounds typical of Karl's musings:

'The Night Slips Us Smiling Underneath It's Dress'
'Your Perfume Was The Best Thing'
'Angel Café'
'Cut Clouds'
'The Boy With The Jigsaw Puzzle Fingers'
'Slummin' It For The Weekend'
'Shoulda Been A Painter'
'Shadow Boy'
'Sleepless'

From the Sonar Sound website "2013 see's Karl Hyde, together with a group of hand picked musicians, embark on a series of solo shows to perform some of his new songs as well as rediscovered and reworked gems from the Underworld vaults. For a brief taste of what to expect."

I am surprised by the 'reworked gems' bit at the end. It looked to me like every effort had been made to make this project nothing to do with 'classic' Underworld (i.e. techno version) as we know it. My guess is that the reworked gems will be done in an Edgeland way and not a 'classic' Underworld way....

Should be interesting to see what old material they play in japan. tongue? dirty epic? older stuff even? Also They have 'Underworld' dates scheduled for mexico. What they will do with underworld after karl's side stuff could be interesting as well.

The set sounds great, I had no idea that playing the new album
would feel this good & explorations into cherished U/W
classics reveal a whole other point of view that makes
me want to revisit the entire U/W catalogue for live.
This has turned into a richly rewarding journey, will
anyone come to see us? – I hope so, because I’m excited
about sharing these sounds with everyone – please come.

I'm excited to hear bootlegs of a concert, hope they happen. I'm eagerly awaiting this album. Not chomping at the bit, but just low level anticipation and excitement. I just got this feeling it'll be a good experience, and a catalyst on to more great things.

Q review the album in Mays edition & give it 4 stars. There's also a Q&A session with Karl, where he clearly talks fondly of UW stuff, including hints at future work. People were worried IIRC when the solo album was announced. From reading the interview, UW ain't finished.

The Trance OST also get 4 stars btw...

Just to clarify further on your rant, BLD, the vinyl WAS announced at the same as the rest of the formats. If you look at the first post in this thread it says "deluxe CD/DVD, standard CD, download and 12" vinyl".

Just had a mail saying my Vinyl has been shipped, which is strangely early. Has everyone had one, or are Universal seeing if I leak it? (I love buying music and using my @pirateparty.org.uk address, it really freaks some record companies and shops out!).

By the way, it looks like the 200 limited vinyl copies with signed prints haven't sold out yet.

I agree that these Japanese exclusive tracks are beyond annoying. So far I've spent £46 on this album, and I'm sure that will end up going well past £50 by the time I've got the record store day release, and I've still been short-changed by 4 tracks, with practically no way of even paying to get them unless I jump through hoops, learn a foreign language and pay a random amount in import duty to import an album back to the country it originally came from.

Just wait a while. The japanese exclusives aren't limited edition. Eventually a japanese seller on amazon will have them for not atrociously expensive. I managed to nab the live at the roundhouse (itunes) disc that way. I do the same thing with PC games now. Wait a year and get the game of the year edition on steam for 10 bucks with all the downloadable extras included. Now the record store day release and the limited signed copies are another story entirely...

Pretty damn annoyed I didn't get a photo, considering I ordered minutes after getting the email. Could have saved myself a bunch of money and got it on Amazon.

Not sure why they shipped them separately.

Bummer, I thought it would be close but had no idea if I was in early enough.

Frustrating day here....no print with the cd and tried 3 stores for the fingers 7" and none if them had it.

Still, looking forward to popping the cd in :-)

The Order Receipt says:

"Preorder download will become available on street date (2013-04-22 12:05 AM SST)"

SST is Samoa Standard Time, or UTC -11. The last time zone in the world. So midnight there is about 4 hours from now.

Got my download in one whole zip file. Despite buying the CD&DVD Deluxe pack, the download is only the basic 9 track album. Looks like I'll have to wait for the postman to hear the bonus tracks.

I got the same thing - just the 9 tracks in the download. My CD and vinyl arrived this morning though so I'm not too put out.

I ended up with print #47 with the CD/DVD:

And vinyl album art #15.

My 'live receipt' continues to just have a link to download a single mp3, Edgeland, and nothing else.. but they keep on sending me 'order updated' emails regardless. I haven't been bothered to contact their support yet.

the two japanese bonus tracks are amazing especially Cascading Light. very different and the vocal manipulation is fantastic. the opening reminded me much of Faxed Invitation. the remixes of Cut Clouds and Slummin' are pretty good as well.

Maybe a silly question but how did you get the Japanese bonus tracks?

You can buy them individually on Japan's itunes store. The catch is, that means setting up a Japan itunes store account, and if your credit card was not issued in Japan you may have problems actually purchasing anything. There's workarounds for this though, you can buy gift cards from places like JBox (http://www.jbox.com/product/ITUNESCARD) to add store credit to your account, which will then let you buy music without needing a credit card to be registered.

Apparently, the preorder download bonus is just the standard edition. You'll just have to wait for your physical product for the deluxe content.

This works. I've done it before w/the UW material from the RiverRun period that was only available on the iTunes Japan store at the time. :D

PB - Check your PM... you should be able to play these tracks as long as you have the iTunes account active (just an e-mail and username). I do know that the era was one of DRM on iTunes purchases before which required a log-in w/the correct iTunes account to play certain tracks... but entering your Japan account info should correct that.

Does anyone know if the Japan store has gone iTunes Plus yet? I refuse to buy 128kbps audio files!

Yes, iTunes is "Plus" worldwide. There was a period where you could upgrade your DRM tracks to Plus for 30% of the original cost, but that program is now over. You'd have to rebuy it if you wanted the DRM-free 256 Kbps files.

Weren't the first 200 LPs supposed to include something? I can't imagine I didn't get in in the first 200. Can people who did receive the extra with the vinyl post what time their order receipt has listed? I'd love to collect time ordered vs. print received.

The first 200 vinyls ordered from Universal Records here:

http://store.universal-music.co.uk/restofworld/dance+electronic/uvinyl-karl-hyde-edgeland-vinyl-2013/invt/0602537298327/

contained signed lithos. I believe the lithos shipped separately from the vinyl. If you ordered the vinyl anywhere else, it did not include this limited edition litho.

Didn't get a photo (just a promo postcard) and I have no way of getting the Jap bonus tracks (which is just total SHIT anyway that a "Deluxe" edition isn't totally comprehensive). I'm never ordering anything from UW store just for an exclusive bonus that for months we all didn't know if we were "in" or missed the boat. Would've cancelled in a heartbeat had I known all of the above.

The album has its moments but overall it is a mess.

VERY pissed and disappointed about the exclusive stuff that I was left out on. Could use a PM of the Jap tracks if they are worth a listen.... :( :(

now thats its been a few days and half-a-dozen full listens, i can say with confidence that this is a wonderful album. I have the deluxe and i tracked down the japanese extras. Its a shame that these 4 songs won't be heard by all because they are just fantastic.

This album fills the perfect hole in my listening archive. They all have that 8-ball feel - the mellow yet poppy(?) sound.

not that i've recieved my order yet, even if i ordered the 24th of january, my hopes of getting a photo are gone... but what the hell, i'm a good loser, specially after listening many times to such a pretty album like edgeland. the first time i enjoyed the first tracks but somewhat hated the last three, i found them to be a little over the top and somewhat cheesy. but they made a lot of sense after some listens. now i like them a lot.

even i found the best position to listen the whole thing - bored at work, waiting for the project to arrive, staring at the window, looking the people/vehicles pass by. delicious album is delicious.

i want my record to arrive. seriously. i want my neighbors to hear what i'm blasting.

The piano note at the end of the track just tops it off!!

Bravo Mr. Hyde. Job well done on a fantastic solo release. Hoping you'll make your way out here to the West Coast of the US. Would love to hear these tracks live.

I think I actually prefer the score for The Outer Edges to the songs on Edgeland. I suppose the score is more Underworldy. I find myself not listening to any of the Edgeland tracks on their own, but I'll put on the record when I want a consistent tone to accompany what I'm doing or thinking. In that way it's a real proper album; Karl identified a sound and built a collection around it. But I wish I could listen to the isolated film score too.

I'm saving my first listen for when I actually have time to focus on the album. Going on a family road trip soon and hope to give it a proper airing then...it's been a while since I've had a car and I miss highway listening! Yeah, with some of the percussive flourishes stripped out, making it sound more like some of the soft Underworld jams they'd sprinkle throughout the radio broadcasts.
