View Full Version : Rick Smith scoring Danny Boyle's 'Trance' - March 25, 2013 release

I just found this article: http://www.firstshowing.net/2013/composer-news-clint-mansell-on-filth-underworld-solo-on-trance/

Since I'm a huge Danny Boyle fan and obviously an UW junkie, I'm loving this news. Danny shot the film before he did the Olympics and it's been in post-production for quite some time now. I'm assuming we'll get a trailer soon; it would be cool if it contained a clip of what Rick is cooking up.

Also, as an FYI, Boyle teamed up with screenwriter John Hodge again for the film. It's been a while since they worked together, but Hodge wrote Trainspotting.

Thanks for linking. I'd read a little about the movie (it does look interesting), and had been a little curious to see if Rick was going to be doing something with it, given their history.....

Wonder if it'll be like the Bungalow With Stairs stuff? Mostly ambient but a few frantic moments.

It is interesting. I have suggested before, and at risk of making it sound like a conspiracy, it came across to me that Rick did pretty much all of the work on Olympics and was certainly the only name drop when it came to talking about it... Also subtle references in Karl's daily diary suggested that they seemed to be at distance from each other.

The first trailer is out now. Sadly, there aren't any tunes from Rick on it; it has 2 UNKLE tracks.

Yeah, seems like anything Karl sings on or whatever is an "Underworld" track/remix/collab...but everything Rick is doing is either Danny Boyle or art project related, and published under his own name. Does seem to be a vibe of parting ways. Which would suck because no one makes better electronic music together. Guessing that would mean a "Rick Left the Band" scenario or a "Karl owns or acquired the rights to use the name Underworld™ from now on" sort of thing.

Who knows though when the band is so quiet for the last year and some change with no big band direction announcements one way or the other.

I suspect its more of giving credit where due. I imagine rick does a lot more work on these prijects as of late (espescially with the lack of lyrics) and theres starting to be some segregation between 'underworld' projects and other projects.

It would be very sad indeed if Karl and Rick would go separate ways.

I dunno, "parting ways" seems a little premature. Hopefully it's a detour, not a dissolution.

Perhaps, as jetpig suggested, the work will just be sifted into different channels (just as UW and Tomato have been for years). Rick'll have his soundtrack work under his own name, Karl his art exhibitions. And every so often they'll meet to give us the glorious whirlwind that is Underworld.

As long as they still perform every few years somewhere in between the US coasts, I'll be happy. :D

I recall them saying in interviews a few years back that this was the direction they wanted to head in. Being able to focus on their myriad side projects and getting together every once in a while to concentrate their artistic impulses into Underworld awesomeness - if I remember correctly they even said they wanted to eventually defer the Underworld moniker on to a new generation! I'm sure there would be a lot of takers on this forum.

Erm...after 30 years+ of working together, people are allowed time off from each other. Look at Radiohead for example and their different side projects. Outkast have gone 6 years with no new material.

Fear not. Anyway, I've not got a proper cut of Bamboo ;)

I'm taking your wink as sarcasm ;P

But really, i agree with the above. If you're in a collaborative relationship for as long as R&K, you'll no doubt have your unique artistic directions to forge and identities to explore. We are comfortable with both from 20+ years of Underworld, so we'll no doubt welcome and enjoy revelations from solo output. Stick the UW stamp on it and we "expect" a familiarity, too, and maybe the sum's greater than the parts? In any case, as long as that UW output is available, i welcome the diversions and side projects.

Very article about Rick/Boyle/Trance but touches on Rick/Karl not currently working togther:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/music/rockandpopfeatures/9895826/Underworlds-Rick-Smith-Danny-Boyles-music-man.html

---
So has Smith found a new creative partner? Such a suggestion makes him speak of his relationship with Hyde like a well-worn marriage: “We’ve been working together for 30 years. Fresh experiences are important to both of us.” Underworld fans can be hopeful, the band have “no intentions of stopping.” "There’s always something trickling along”, he says, “but a short break would be nice.” Judging by what happened the last time Smith said that, it may be a little while coming.

Actually, that's about the only Underworld "sounds" that I could identify on the album. AFAICT the rest of the album all sounds new, with nothing recycled from earlier or unused UW work.

The Moby song is pretty dang lame, the couple of old time classic tracks are vibe destroying skippers for sure, but the Rick Smith stuff is interesting enough.

The song with the chick vocals is the most "UWish" sounding that I've heard and judging from comments here is the one standout single-type track. But her voice is too "shriiiiiiiiiiiiiiil" for my tastes...although the verse parts have a good delivery and the whole lyrics overall are kinda catchy in a country-pop kind of way. Oddly reminds me a bit of that KLF/Tammy Wynette combo from the 90's for some reason.

The rest of the tracks I need to get more familiar with, only listened briefly once (or twice for the couple of tracks I found on Youtube before the cd came in the mail) and not even sure I've heard all of the tracks (I know I haven't yet heard the Unkle track or anything after it yet)

Overall it is a solid cd so far so good.;)
