Well, obviously Danny Boyle is why Underworld is involved. This is epic though. A busy 2012, indeed. Here's the announcement:

"It's a great honour to be asked to do this and one we're taking very seriously," said Hyde.
In before "Born Slippy (Stand Up London 2012 Olympics Mix)"!
Seriously though, I could not be more excited about this. I can only imagine what kind of amazing stuff a group like them could do for a show as big as the Olympics...
Does anybody know exactly what being "musical directors" entails though? Will they be composing music for the ceremonies? Actually performing live?

It is clear now why we haven't heard from the boys for a while. Rick appears to have broken his neck. ;)

This whole Olympic thing is awesome news, i am really happy for Rick and Karl - what a fantastic opportunity.

Looking forward to some new Underworld themed sporting events.

Of course it all starts off with the popular rope race Born Skippy followed by the test of strength with Push Upstairs and finally a test of endurance with the Dark & Long relay race.

And don't even ask about Big Meat Show ;)

Big Meat Show? Is that a new song or an old reworked?

It means they're in charge of all the audio aspects of the opening ceremonies. They can do whatever they want (and what Danny asks of them).
Yes, they will be composing music for it. Performing? Maybe. Past opening ceremonies have had musical artists make brief appearances.

I think a performance ala Freur attire would suit this nicely, homemade instruments and all... less the crimped hair of course! :D

The only negative is going to be watching this in the US and having non-stop commentary from NBC drowning out the music. They completely ruined Bjork's performance a few years ago.

This is true, however, since we live in the digital age - I'm sure we'll be able to pick up a UK or other world broadcast via YouTube or some other website as well as perhaps a friendly dirt may be willing to post a download... :D

Seems that the Chemical Brothers are also involved with this music project for the Olympics.....>>>Click<<< (http://www.spinner.com/2012/01/30/chemical-brothers-dont-think/)

Because 'Don't Think' is almost out, we're interested to know what you guys are planning for the future.

Well, we're doing a bit of DJing this year. I would like to go to America and DJ at one of these new big raves. No one's asked us yet, but maybe you can put that out there. We're DJing in London in a couple of weeks, and we're going to Japan. We're working on some new music. We're doing some music for the Olympics, which is happening in our fair of town of London, and we've been asked to do something for that. And yeah, someday, there'll be another Chemical Brothers record.

Over here (http://www.nme.com/news/the-chemical-brothers/61684) it specifies that the Chems will be doing music for the cycling segments! That should be fun - especially considering Tom's apparently nuts for cycling.
All in all it looks like the 2012 Olympics are shaping up to be great for the world of electronic music!

Interesting! I think it's a good fit for UW as well. Judging by a couple other news sources this is the speech in question:

Be not afeard; the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices
That, if I then had waked after long sleep,
Will make me sleep again: and then, in dreaming,
The clouds methought would open and show riches
Ready to drop upon me that, when I waked,
I cried to dream again.

"Boyle is collaborating with electronic musical duo Underworld, whose 1990s rave classic Born Slippy featured in Trainspotting. They have already mixed two tracks at London's Abbey Road studios. Asked about timings for the ceremony, Boyle said the music will be used to help dictate the pace of athletes parading around the stadium."
