Speaking of 20th Anniversary, not much info available on this yet:
Underworld - Anthology 1992-2012, 3CD set:
http://cdon.no/musikk/underworld/anthology_1992-2012_%5Bimport%5D-17050737
http://www.imusic.dk/cd/0711297984224/underworld-2012-anthology-1992-2012-cd
but it looks like "Big Meat Show" is getting an official release. Also, first-time digital releases for "The Hump" and "Minneapolis". Also good for "Why Why Why" for those who missed the Japan CD release. And "Parc (Live)" could possibly be something previously unheard.
Also due for release on the same day, 1-disc Underworld - Collection:
http://www.imusic.dk/cd/0711297984422/underworld-2012-collection-cd
This one looks most notable for an unmixed "Beebop Hurry" and maybe "Cowgirl (Live)", unless it's just the Everything Everything version.
Thanks to chino for pointing out these releases.

I'm guessing Parc live is the same one we all know.
What's "Second Hand" again? I can't remember.

Looks like much of the original 1992-2002 cd set is revisited with a couple of new gems sprinkled in (Always Loved a Film is notably absent though), with a 3rd disc of b-sides that could be nice to have in one place.
The Big Meat Show is a track I don't believe I'm all too familiar with (hearing elements of Tongue and other Dubno tracks in the mix):

Would be interesting to see what kind of cover art the releases will get and if there will be new remixes for any of the songs like the way NUXX was for the 1992-2002 release.

A couple interesting choices in the tracklist, such as "To Heal" and "Simple Peal", and perhaps worth it for some CD quality versions of B Sides.
Underworld 1992-2002 didn;t exactly excite, although it was kind of fun to hear tracks in a different order and a few different fade outs/breakdowns.
Maybe the 20th Anniversary will hold more surprises - a wildly different NUXX? A jazzy mellow Cowgirl? Prob not.

These feel weirdly arbitrary... the Collection hits you with a bunch of odd tracks - collaboration type stuff that ISN'T on the new Anthology, then the Anthology goes to 3 discs when it could have just been done with no overlap with the previous one spanned over 2 discs... the first 2 discs feel arbitrary, swapping what - 4 songs off? Odd.
I'll buy them both, to be sure, but I still find them odd... LOL
Will buy everything... at least for The Hump, The Big Meat Show and Minneapolis...

In the absence of analogue masters, 45rpm 180g vinyl, 24/96 digital will do.

So, some interesting things from the HMV pages. First of all, it looks like both will be released early in Japan on Beat Records (wonder why not Traffic?) on Dec. 7 (or the 11th, according to Beat).
Secondly, the interesting tracks on A Collection:
10. Underworld / Dark and Long (Dark Train) 2011 edit (2011)
11. Underworld / Mmm Skyscraper I Love you 2011 edit (2011)
14. Underworld / Rez 2011 edit (2011)
16. Underworld / Moaner (2008)
Now, I wonder if "2011 edit" means remix like NUXX 2003?
Other items of note on A Collection:
Cowgirl Live (2000) is probably from Everything, Everything
Beebop Hurry would be the first time available unmixed.
King of Snake is probably unmixed with Shudder. That version was previously only available on the Japan single CD, and a few promo 12". Might be interesting to some people.
On The Anthology:
Parc Live (2005) is probably just the same as what appeared on The Bells The Bells then.

i wonder why "the big meat show' is on there but "can u feel me?", "organ" and the longer version of "river of bass" are absent? maybe this is some kind of a preliminary tracklist as it seems to be kind of a weird compilation.
bryantm3
11-15-2011, 01:57 PM
also it seems to me that it would be better to have a new order "substance" approach— for the most part, if it's on an album it doesn't get put on the anthology.

Now, I wonder if "2011 edit" means remix like NUXX 2003?
I expect the "edits" are just to squeeze the tracks on the disc. :(
TheBang
11-16-2011, 04:40 AM
I expect the "edits" are just to squeeze the tracks on the disc. :(
I'm more optimistic than that. There were edits for time on 1992-2002, and none of those were labeled "2002 edit". There was Born Slippy (2003 Edit); granted it was "Edit" because it was an edit of the 12" mix, which is not the case here. But hopefully it's more interesting than just a fade-out.
But actually, taking a look at the tracklisting more closely, it doesn't add up. If we take the album times for everything:
1. The First Note is Silent - 5:40
2. Scribble - 6:58
3. Beebop Hurry - 3:05
4. Downpipe - 8:10
5. Crocodile - 6:30
6. To Heal - 2:36
7. Two Months Off - 9:08
8. Jumbo - 6:57
9. NUXX - 11:37
10. Dark Train -
11. Mmm Skyscraper -
12. Pearl's Girl - 9:36
13. Cowgirl Live - 3:40
14. Rez -
15. King of Snake - 8:56
16. Moaner - 7:38
even without the 2011 edits, we're already over an hour and a half, which is way too long. That doesn't even account for some of them that have longer versions, like Jumbo or Moaner. Let's try it with radio edits then:
1. The First Note is Silent (Radio Edit) - 3:36
2. Scribble (Radio Edit) - 3:50
3. Beebop Hurry - 3:05
4. Downpipe (Radio Edit) - 3:17
5. Crocodile (Radio Edit) - 3:51
6. To Heal - 2:36
7. Two Months Off (Radio Edit) - 3:59
8. Jumbo (Edit) - 4:08
9. NUXX (Short) - 4:23
10. Dark Train -
11. Mmm Skyscraper -
12. Pearl's Girl (Edit) - 4:24
13. Cowgirl Live - 3:40
14. Rez -
15. King of Snake (Straight Mate Mix) - 3:51
16. Moaner (Short Version) - 4:10
This makes more sense. Given the sheer number of tracks on A Collection, it's gotta be all radio edits. Without the 2011 edits, this is at 49 minutes, which means 25 minutes left over for the 2011 edits. Since those 3 don't already have radio edits, it means these new 2011 edits are probably radio-ish edits, 3-5 minutes long each. So the total Collection runtime will come in at just over an hour.

OK, track timings are up for Anthology on Amazon JP:
http://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/tracks/B0067JR6AU/ref=dp_tracks_all_1#disc_1
Assuming the timings are accurate, here are the highlights:
1. Jumbo, full version 9:12, previously difficult to obtain
2. The Hump, previously only available on limited vinyl
3. An apparently longer version of Big Meat Show. 9:05 vs. 6:51 on the demo DAT.
4. An apparently longer version of Minneapolis. 10:04 vs. approx. 9:07 on the vinyl.
5. Full version of Why Why Why (12:12)
6. Second Hand. Previously only available on Cafe Del Mar collection.
7. Parc (Live) (2005). Possibly a previously unreleased version. Track timing (3:28) does not match any previous release (Amsterdam - 7:39, The Bells The Bells - 4:16, Brixton - 8:15). It was known to have been played in 2005 at Montreux Jazz Festival and Melt Festival.

i welcome new edits as opposed to getting a compilation of already owned tracks... if that were the case - I'd just burn my own CD with the same tracks and download the artwork.
had i not already hunted and caught a copy of that 9:12 version of Jumbo - I'd be super thrilled with the new anthology. so i'm mildly excited.
i will say that i'm a little confused as to the non-cohesive track listing of the compilation single disc, however, it doesn't seem like it was track-listed to be played from beginning to finish. at any rate - thank you underworld for giving me something more. :D

Seems to me like the best part about this might be the artwork. Unless you're manic-obsessive about getting everything by them, you should have most of the material already, and the "rarities" are easily obtainable through other means.

Bang, i appreciate the details/breakdown!
Yes, i will buy this especially for
2. The Hump (didn't have a quality rec. of that),
3. Big Meat Show (longer version) and
6. Second Hand (though i'm pretty happy with the version that used to be on the UWLive archive, like back in 2002-ish...it's apparently a live studio jam but fairly true to the Cafe del Mar version).
As for the other tracks, i'm still hopeful, but the time differences, even a minute or more, usually spell "edit" or "looped fade out" to me. But hey, there were some surprises on 1992-2002 and also on the Ansum/AHDO promo...hopefully here as well.

Sort of on the fence for "A Collection"...wouldn't mind getting "Beebop Hurry" or "Downpipe" in a quality format, though "The First Note is Silent" is a terrible way to start out the record, imho! If Joe Casual buys this record as an introduction to UW, that first track, and arguably the next several collabs certainly doesn't lend cred. for the weath of solo material that's to come.

Disc 3 (unreleased tracks and rarities)
1. The Hump
(The first ever release by Smith/Hyde/Emerson on the Tomato Recordings label. First time available on CD or digitally)
2. Big Meat Show
(A staple of Underworld early live shows but never released on any format until now)
3. Minneapolis
(The B-side of Lemon Interupts Dirty 12". This is the rare full-length version, first time available digitally)
4. Why Why Why
(The B-side of the pink vinyl issue of Rez. Only previously available in its full length on a Japanese import)
5. Oich Oich
(Originally released only on Pearl’s Girl EP on Wax Trax/TVT/Junior Boys Own)
6. Second Hand
(Specially recorded for the first and original Ibiza chill out album - Cafe del Mar Volume 1)
7. Parc
(A live track - previously only released in Japan)
8. Simple Peal
(Bonus track on Japanese edition of Barking)
9. JAL To Tokyo
(Only ever released on vinyl and as part of the Riverrun series of digital-only EPs)
Firstly I thought Second Hand was an edit of Thing In A Book. Secondly, JAL to Tokyo is available digitally on CD on the Japanese Breaking and Entering CD as a bonus track. I agree that "Juanita" is absolutely one of the (if not THE) best songs they've ever made
but ... I kinda understand why it's not included on the compilation, I mean - it goes on for ...what like 15 minutes or so? And while the edit is "interesting" it's absolutely not something for the casual fan
...I also prefer those 'edits' that -1 did years ago over the official short version
btw - those "2011 Edits" - are they just shortened tracks, or are they like the "edits" as found on the Prodigy's "Their Law"; where the tracks were slightly tweaked

FYI, Amazon currently has the 7 minute Jumbo version, whereas iTunes has the 9 minute version. Amazon also has the shorter version of Moaner, whereas iTunes has the full version. Also, Amazon appears to have a defective Bigmouth. It cuts off unexpectedly at 4:10.
Other items of note:
Legit longer version of Minniapolis. Extensions in the middle and end breakdowns, and a proper ending, rather than a fade-out.
Parc is an edit of The Bells The Bells. It has 45 seconds chopped out after the end of the first verse.

Word back from Steve Hall...
The track is little more than a demo, and is what it is. You can even hear Karl talking over the track in parts....
it was played live loads of times during the early years but the recording was never finished as it wasn't gonna make the album. the vocal is probably part live take and part recorded vox manually dropped into the track.

Ha!
I was just about to write my "guess" about the track and the bit of the vocal missing...
Essentially - I was going to say the exact same thing, which makes sense... especially as the music isn't effected, just that one bit of the vocal - and you can hear karl making little "vocal notes" (like, talking over the track... not "notes" as in musical notes)
and how even the "trancing trancing" bit sounds different than the other vocals...

thanks for posting Steve's thoughts on big meat show. it's kind of odd to know that the track used on anthology is a demo. and what about DubnobassDAT? big meat show from the DAT recording has complete lyrics. it's shorter and it lacks karl's speech, but at least all the verses are complete.

yea - got to say... some of those lyrics are definitely cringe-worthy
...and I just now realized - as far as the 3rd disc... it's certainly really heavy on the dubno-era tracks
like - out of the nine tracks, only three aren't from 92-94
no STITI outtakes / recordings, no BF, AHDO, OWB...
...yes - I realize that "Oich Oich" was released as a b-side to "Pearls Girl" but it was at least two years old by the time that it came out ... I mean - the video for it came out in... what '93? (I don't have my copy of "Footwear Repairs" handy to check)

I bought the Anthology bundle from the site this morning. Excited to own the hard to find songs by legitimate means. Never had heard the 9:12 version of Jumbo....love it.
Was wondering why I got multiple links in my confirmation email to download the music? Did anyone have trouble editing the tag info?
thanks for the help, Jason

Regarding that 9:12 version of Jumbo... Has there been any confirmation that that is indeed the version on the CDs?
Given that several of the digital services have different versions, I'd love to know which version is indeed on the CD pressing.
Gotta say I'm a bit bummed about the audio glitch in Big Meat Show... That's going to bug me now every time I play it...

Nope. It's listed as such on the Amazon CD listings though. Also, the downloads from Underworldlive.com are the 9 minute version. So I'd say it's likely on the CD.

thanks for posting Steve's thoughts on big meat show. it's kind of odd to know that the track used on anthology is a demo. and what about DubnobassDAT? big meat show from the DAT recording has complete lyrics. it's shorter and it lacks karl's speech, but at least all the verses are complete.
i don't know, i really enjoy listening BMS in all its hi-fi glory, but when it comes to that part... it sounds like something is totally out place.

Finally I have to agree... between 5:16 to 5:17 a bit of the 1st word missing...
the fade-out is also quite sloppy and abrupt, something that could have been fixed with even the most rudimentary software. it's an odd choice for the anthology for sure. why not include something like "jamscraper" instead? or "burts?" or the long version of "rowla?" it's not like there's any shortage of underworld rarities - there's no need to resort to unfinished demos with questionable lyrics to fill out a compilation.

Nope. It's listed as such on the Amazon CD listings though.
It's interesting - Amazon (US) has the mp3 download at the 6:57 album version. There are no time listings for the CD, however, Amazon (UK) and Amazon (JP) have the tracklisting for the CD with Jumbo 9:14.
iTunes also has Jumbo 9:12 listed for download.
Right now I'm streaming the Anthology from Rdio and they have the 6:57 version of Jumbo. They have the 2 disc available to stream. I just checked Spotify (US) and they only have the 1 disc available for stream of the Anthology - they also are streaming the 6:57 version of Jumbo. They have the Collection available to stream, whereas Rdio does not.
It's pretty safe to say the 9:12 version will be featured on the physical release. I've pre-ordered mine from Amazon - couldn't beat the deal - both 3 disc Anthology and Collection CD for under $25 US Shipped. Noice! :D

I'm so sick of this "buy it from here for this" bullshit with music. Its beyond ridiculous that I now have to go to iTunes and buy this as a single track after just having purchased the album.
While I'm at it, not liking the odd spoken-demo track of Big Meat Show. How does that version make it onto the compilation? Who wants to hear "I'm not tracking this" in the middle of a song? I'm sticking with the demo from the Dubno rip we all have.
Underwhelming release.

I just ran through "A Collection" and the biggest thing on there is Beebop Hurry in much better form than on Athens. First, the beginning is truly not mixed (i.e. this wasn't just taken from Athens). And the ending is properly there too, instead of being cut off as on Athens, which must have been a mistake.
The only other previously unavailable material is the 2011 Edits. They are true edits, not just fade-outs. But nothing special there. They just lose various sections to make it shorter overall. Skyscraper loses the whole "Can U Feel Me?" section from the end, and then some bits in the middle.
The only other track that is changed is the King of Snake (Straight [Mate] Mix) which has a weird fade added to the end that isn't present on the single version.

That might be me you are talking about. I mentioned that, but others say that isn't the case, so I should listen to the Barking version and the Anthology version back to back. I had thought that one section that lasted for only a short while was different. I'll double check.
About Oich Oich, someone was talking about how it had a video in '93...I'm curious about Oich Oich (one of my favorite UW tracks)...I've heard some call it a STITI era track and others call it a Dubno era track. Which era is it? Does it belong to one or the other, or did it emerge in between the end of the Dubno era tracks but before the creation of the STITI era tracks?
Also, about the Big Meat Show, it is too bad about the vocals being cut off at one point. It is a demo, though. But I'm glad that a different version of the leaked track was made available. It is nice to have another version of it. I still like the Dubno DAT demo better. Hopefully the CD version of Big Meat Show will have an edit of the cut off lyrics and a better ending (it does fade really fast).

I don't think it is so absolute. If your talking about when it was released on CD, then i would call it a STITI era track... And the atmosphere certainly fits more into the STITI.
Although you could also argue that Juanita, Air Towel and NUXX were being played in some of their early shows - they could have even been written at the same time as some Dubno era tracks...
The music timeline seems complex. They have always been creative - writing tracks, shelving tracks, bringing back tracks that were written 10 years ago to complete them...

Like Mike said, it's hard to say sometimes. For example, for Always Loved a Film, would you consider it an AHDO era track, RiverRun era, OwB era, or Barking era? Because it had versions appear in each of those. For simplicity's sake, I'd categorize it for when it was officially released.
But even then, Oich Oich is cloudier than your average track. As someone mentioned, on the Footwear Repairs jacket, the music video is listed as 1993. So would that count as an official release before its first official audio release in 1996? I don't know.

Somewhere in my loft is a copy of 'Kiteless - A Tomato Project' which in case anyone doesnt know was a VHS released way back before Footwear Repairs. I think Footwear Repairs is this Kiteless project plus later STITH vids (oh, and Dirty apparently).
Anyhoo, the Kiteless VHS came out in 1994 and has the Oich Oich vid on it. In fact i think snippets of Oich Oich may've been used between the other tracks too (?). It was great at the time to get a brand new track on the vid :)

yea - Oich Oich is definitely a 'dubno' track... not only did they perform it live back then, it was also 'finished enough' to be put on an official release (although, as a video first.) To me it even "sounds" more like a dubno song than a STITI

When I was listening to Dubnobasswithmyheadman and then Anthology 1992 - 2002, I was thinking that Dirty Epic is a lot quieter on Dubno than on Anthology...
So I did a little research using ReplayGain software.
Dirty Epic (Dubno version) - Track gain: +3.62dB.
Dirty Epic (1992 - 2002) - Track gain: -6.09dB.
So new version is louder than the one from Dubno.
To my ears sounds better old version from dubno which was mastered by Jeff Pesche.
It have more depth, the new version have more treble and bass I think and it sounds more "digital" to me, hard to explain. Im wondering how the newest Dirty Epic on Anthology 1992 - 2012 will sound like, if it will be exact the same version as on previous anthology or not...
Just my idea, because I think that such a piece like Dirty Epic deserves the best sounding possible.
We will see in January.

The collection booklet borrows some photo's from the anthology booklet (Brixton academy ball drop).
Loads of live photo's in the anthology booklet, mostly from the Oblivian / Barking era. A few early photo's from Glastonbury but it would have been cool to include some more older photo's. I like the anthology art work and the whole package feels quality to me.
We could debate the track selection for ages (no beautiful burnout, etc), but to me the two different collections make sense. A collection is straight to the point and with recent collaborations included it makes Underworld feel very much current. And the anthology is exactly that with some rare tracks (not to dirties I know!) thrown in.
Also a perfect time to release it with new material unlikely this year.
I love the full 10 minute build up classics underworld, but looking forward to being able to get in the car for a short journey and being able to stick collection in the cd player and get a quick blast!

The 1992-2012 three-disc collection is only post-Emerson photos, which strikes me as poor form but without knowing the whole story it's an uninformed opinion.
Interesting business in the credits, only the following tracks are said to have been co-written by Emerson:
Bigmouth
Skyscraper
Rez
Cowgirl
Spikee
Dirty Epic
Dark Train
Pearls Girl
Moaner
Minneapolis
Why Why Why
Second Hand
Everything else that's included from the early days is credited only to Hyde and Smith:
Nuxx
Jumbo
8 Ball
The Hump
Big Meat Show
Oich Oich
The "Collection" credits also show Jumbo and Nuxx as not co-written by Emerson. What is credited to Emerson is:
Dark Train
Skyscraper
Pearls Girl
Cowgirl
Rez
King of Snake
Moaner
Maybe this isn't news but I'm quite surprised to see that Emerson apparently didn't have a hand in Nuxx, the band's biggest hit.

I was listening to the Big Meat Show today and thought, it should be quite easy to fix it up and make it sound more professional. Theres a section in there tho where you can imagine Karl saying off-mic "im not singing over this anymore" "i'm done, next take". At a certain point the song feels like its two takes bolted together. It is held together by the rhythm though and as I said, could work with some patching... anyone?

I actually think it's odd that he's credited on:
Skyscraper
Rez
Cowgirl
Dirty Epic
...as on the actual release of "Dubnobasswithmyheadman" - he's only credited on "Surfboy" and the rest is just Rick & Karl
but on the flip side - I am surprised that he's not credited for "Jumbo" as... if I remember correctly - on Beacoup Fish, all the tracks are credited to the three of them.

that's the problem with this day and age... most of us have already heard these 2 releases or even already had them (ahem...) my copies arrived 2 days ago and i immediately ripped open the plastic wrapping and looked at the booklet and inserts... then I put them down... and now, like most of my physical CD's - they lay in wait for the day I decide to actually place them in a CD player...
gone are the days when you waited in anticipation (sometimes in line at a midnight release - oh how I miss those days) and when you finally picked up a copy you immediately put the disc in the CD player...
i do prefer the overall artwork on the new anthology as opposed to the old release of basic black or boring grey.

Got my physical cd set in the mail yesterday ( :) !) and was blown away by the nice glossy packaging and insert booklet. Makes me yearn for the days when there were actual cd/record stores and every album had art style to go along with it (for better or worse). Seems for me that $20 lossless quality EPs (yes, EPs and not LPs) with Beatport's premium they charge for WAVs is becoming the norm. No art. More expensive. Less tracks.
This is a breath of fresh air. Plus I'm sure it sounds good too but who cares about all of that shit - we've heard all these tracks before. :p

for me it's been the opposite for quite some time.. in the sense
that.. if you get 320k mp3's it's just as good... i can't tell the difference...
once i get the physical version, if i even bother ripping it to wav/flac,
i convert them to mp3 either way... and never actually listen to
the physical cd's..
Same here. I can't tell any difference between CDs and high-bitrate rips, either. Although I still like to lay hands on Underworld's physical releases, I never listen to them once ripped. Don't even have a CD player anymore, besides computer drives. In fact, I'll pack up all those CDs shortly for a move, and I guess they won't see the light of day for the next couple of months or years...

I hate mp3s. I'm only listening to music from original CDs. I love to watching the booklets while listening.
I'm listening mp3s just when I'm outside, on my ipod.

Yeah, the booklets are part of why I bother to get a hold of physical releases at all. Coming without printed artwork, I haven't really gotten into buying MP3 yet. Call me old-fashioned, but to me digital-only releases don't feel as 'valuable'. As regards listening, on the other hand, having one's music collection all in one place, and quickly searchable too, is sooo much more convenient than manually browsing CDs and loading them one by one...

Totally agree on the digital releases ... personally I dont feel I get anything substantial for my buck and certainly no pleasure in buying a digital release. I've actually swung all the way back to vinyl now as my premium choice of format. I went through the same "rip the CD and toss it on the pile, then play from the hard drive" and felt something was missing. So I am back as a vinyl junkie and enjoying the experience again. Most of the vinyl albums you get these days come with a download code to feed the iPod, and though the mp3s sit on my hard drive, there is still something tactile and connecting about taking an album out of its sleeve and popping it on the turntable. Good times!
Of course I had to buy the Underworld CDs (for Underworld I will buy all the physical formats) but just buying a digital copy leaves me cold. :D

This is probably a stupid question, but I've been through the whole thread and didn't see anything mentioned... With the re-release of dubnobasswithmyheadman being completely remastered (well, other than CD5), I was wondering if this release was, as well.

I don't think there was any remastering done for anything on this release.

That's what I thought, though I have done some "side by side" comparisons, and the tracks from this release do sound a lot cleaner than what was released originally.
