Dark and Long Christian Smith Remixes

I don't think this has been mentioned anywhere on here else yet - Christian Smith has been talking about how he's remixing Dark and Long for the past few months and has finally put up a sample of each track on Soundcloud. Check them out below. A bit hard to judge without hearing the full track, imo, but Mr Smith has been pushing out some really tasty remixes lately so I've got high hopes.

To me, the snippets just sound like prolonged build-ups with droning drums that add nothing interesting to the versions already in existence. Perhaps there will be more action in the full tracks...

Have been since roughly 2002. Maybe earlier. I really don't get why other artists have such a hard time remixing them!

I think the RiverRuns (JAL and Peggy Sussed especially) were the last quality official remixes.

In the past 12 months Christian Smith has provided updates on carl craig's, at les,
laurent garnier's flashback and funk d void's diabla to the delight of the original
artists punters and press. after being wowed by smith's superb remix of carl craig's at les the legendary underworld
listed it as one of their tunes of 2010 thereby planting a seed in the veteran producers mind.

the results of mutual appreciation and the aforementioned events has resulted in
smith's biggest remix yet - the reworking of underworld's seminal 'dark and long'.
the sort of track that everyone has very personal memories of remixing. 'dark and long' is a
huge challenge but one that smith has more than ably pulled off- adding to his fantastic
pedigree.


coming in two versions, both of which have won immense support from the band themselves,
the christian smith remixes of 'dark and long' take the track into new territories
respectfully and skillfully.

the tronic treatment mix, the only commercially available mix of the two, preserves
the vibe of the original perfectly while adding a condensed but slow burning feeling of
tension which explodes into the epic break we all know and love.

the hypnotica dub version underpins karl hydes classic vocal refrain and the rich synths
of the original with an ever-changin, guttural monster of a bassline that adds a whole
load of understated aggression without ever taking over the wonderful melodies.
this lot, one of whom was responsible in breaking the track the first time around,
sum this up much better than any press release enthusing:

john digweed: taking on such a classic track is no easy task, but christian has stayed
true to the original and brough the track bang up to date with enough sublime elements
and tweaks to make this rock the dancefloors all over again. a festival classic for 2011

adam beyer: i like the tronic remix, classy rework of one of the ultimate underworld
classics of all time

james zabiela: christian has turned out another amazing rework of a classic and an all
time favourite track of mine in 'dark and long'. usually i'd say 'leave it alone', when
it comes to messing about with the classic records but when the tronic treatments are
involved i know these gems are in safe hands. this is an absolute monster just in time
for ibiza.

the tronic mix is pretty much the same as the original..

the hypnotica dub is interesting, and better, but i'm not a
fan of the original dark train..

now if it really was 'dark and long' that would be a different story..

I don't know why there is so much negative feedback on these remixes. They're pretty good. That Hypnotica Dub had a good vibe... too bad it's only a 2 minute sample. The Tonic Treatment is okay.... I do prefer the version off of the Born Slippy Nuxx single though....

oooooh the memory.... they opened up with Dark Train in Santa Monica. That show was amazing! Too bad NO ONE recorded it... :mad:
