Least. Surprising. Single. Ever.
but seriously folks...
while it's not necessarily my favorite track off the album (ok - it's my least favorite)
this one - absolutely - makes "the most sense"
if at least from a "commercial standpoint"

Please let there be UW B-Sides! So tired of singles with multiple remixes that are borderline unlistenable.
You're right joethelion - the only surprise about this track getting a single release is that it's coming out 8 or 9 months after the album's release. But mayyyyybeeee there could be a surprise on that tracklist?

Even 1 B-Side track would be nice. I was hoping for a Between Stars single - IMHO it's one of the best tracks off the album and totally remixable...

Me too!! Listening to both versions, they really kind of changed the focus - the live version has these big chord changes in the chorus, but the Barking version really neuters it. I dig the album version a lot though, has a great New Order vibe to it and rocks pretty hard, but I fell in love with that live version.

Disclaimer: I don't like the original. Generic beat, generic guitar, generic vocals = generic vocal house (with "vocal house" being the most insulting genre label an electronic-music song may attain).

seriously how many remixes, original or not, are liked by fans of the band or any band, they are there to serve a purpose, but really not worth assessing each one, people like to add their own remixes - and play them out so that the track fits in a set, and in all honesty most dj's rarely play the original, as its usually too radio - hence millions of dodgy mixes.
whatever mixes do officially surface - one or two might please one or two fans, but thats about it. i love remixes, more music and variations, but are they better than the original - almost never... compare and judge away, but don't expect enjoyment from the experience
remixes in the internet age are meaningless megabytes in the system, use them wisely, i say
joethelion
05-20-2011, 09:57 AM
I think I see what you're getting at BSS...
There absolutely has (in this day and age) been a glut of too many remixes of tracks, where QUANTITY outweighs QUALITY
having said that - there are some bands that seem to still overtly try to 'seek out' certain producers who can/will remix tracks to a level that are "at least as good" / "better" than the original... Depeche Mode springs to mind for example.
on the flip side - UNKLE (in recent years) seem to just try to get as many remixes as possible out of a single track (and most of them are crap)
what's so disappointing about the remixes off of the "Barking" tracks - is that:
A) We KNOW that there are unreleased tracks from the album, or at least songs from sessions that led up to the album.
B) I always thought the point of "Barking" was that it was supposed to be a 'dialogue' between UW and the other producers, where UW would give a track to someone, they'd give it back, and then UW would do "a version of their version" (which I don't really think happened)
C) Actually decent remixes of the "Barking" singles have been few and far between... Like SBTRKT's "Bird1" Breakage's "Always Loved a Film" ... but beyond that... not so much...

I actually like the JDB mix of the song... and I'm not even a Manic Street Preachers fan. I'll admit - I did try to get into them... I bought "Know Your Enemy" and actually really liked it - so I bought that 'greatest hits' album of theirs... and liked basically none of the non-remix tracks (except for one, I forget the title)
although - I do think that guitar solo is a bit out of place...

I think most people were disappointed because it was basically the album we had all been waiting for (ALAF, Bird 1 aka Strumpet, Scribble etc), but with an extra degree of separation from the originals we loved - I'm sure everyone would have been fine with it if it had been a remix album instead of the big, flashy LP it was. The bonus disc lessened the blow a bit, but still there's songs which we'll never be able to hear our favorite versions of - the 80's version of Diamond Jigsaw for example!

I agree with you, Matt. Purposes of remixes are to broaden diversity, to display more aspects of a song, to bring the song to a wider audience (and, hence, to sell it more often). I'm always happy about a diverse array of remixes. It just struck me that I don't like ANY of the remixes of Jiamond Digsaw. The underlying problem is that I don't like the original itself, so I seem to have deluded myself into hoping that I would certainly find one of the remixes entertaining.
Evan? (http://www.swanfungus.com/2011/01/in-which-i-review-the-entire-coachella-2011-lineup.html) Is that you?
Oh, if only I were.
(Thanks for the link, I feel honoured to confused with Evan. I am wary of excessive use of the attribute 'hilarious' but that rant surely requires it. This Evan guy seems like a delightfully misanthropic fella who appreciates an ironic mustache.)
How is there not an extended PVD full on trance mix?
Careful, son. What do you want, trance in general OR early-90s trance trance OR full-on specifically? Or even some pseudo-innovative neo full-on with a fair amount of bleep patterns (might be indicated by existing Diamond Jigsaw remixes)? Watch that attitude, boy. You gotta be serious with something as important as trance music. Next thing, you're wandering about telling people Genesis and Underworld started prog...

Released into a void.
Has "Diamond Jigsaw" received any airplay? I live in the USA, so none of the tracks from "Barking" did, but at least there was a certain amount of indie buzz around "Scribble" and "Always Loved a Film".
I really do enjoy the album and welcome a single if there's something new from UW to hear, but not a string of remixes by whatever semi-trendy producer of the month tacks a bit of Jigsaw vocals over his/her crap track.

I believe that the correct answer to both of your questions is:
"Its shit"

Diamond Jigsaw (Julien Chaptal Remix) sounds somewhat promising... anyone hear the whole thing?

Forgive my ignorance, but what is a 'digital promo'? I mean, how do the compiling and distribution work? What does it make 'promo'?
P. S.: Having to ask about digital promos, but knowing what a vinyl is makes me feel old.

yea - I don't understand how you could have a "digital promo"
it's like - "here, take these mp3 copies of the single FOR FREE NOW... and in a couple of weeks, please buy the exact same thing ...please!"
also - I played the "louder" mix, and I didn't notice anything different, I do like the invisibles remix though... but I think the instrumental works a bit better

I've been sent more digital promos recently. I'm assuming that the PRs/labels can trace leaks easier this way or summin.

The digital promos are mostly for DJ's and radio stations, and the like. I think it's easier for them to distribute rather than sending out CDs and such.

Evidently. So I guess the fact that makes those ZIP folders of digital music files 'promo' is that they're not yet available on the open market, or at least not all of the tracks, and are distributed solely for the purposes of airplay and reviews?
Doesn't sound hunt-worthy to me as a moderately obsessive collector-fan... :/

They're promo by virtue of the fact that they're intended (and generally given for free) for promotional purposes, rather than retail sale, regardless of whether they're available at retail or not.
I don't think they're generally watermarked, unless labeled as such.

The Louder version is louder. All of the sounds are much more prominent in the mix (excuse my non-musical description.)
