This will really split people, but I wouldn't expect anything traditional so to speak in terms of album releases we've had in the past. This has got to fit a body of work people may be familiar with with what I assume to be a modern twist. Might make no sense until we see it with visuals. Sounds interesting and a challenge for UW not working with Karls vocals.

Wow cant wait for this, but might resist listening to the sample before I see the play in a couple of weeks! Unusual for a soundtrack to be released for a play like this, but much better than having to search the web (youtube etc) for samples (like we did for Sunshine until it was eventually released!).

Fron field recording to "8 Ball" to 80's commercial music for Juan Veldez coffee (sorry, can't remember who made that song, but it was choral voices featured in a coffee commercial)... Underworld definitely continue to surprise, all in a few seconds!

I saw Frankenstein last night and was very impressed. The music for the show is stunning. Think of all the best ambient instrumental UW tracks and you're there. The sample on soundcloud is indicative of the uplifting feel of some pieces. I think it will work without having seen the performance, but let's face it, we're all going to buy the album anyway, right?
Incidentally, bits of the score and some of one of the ambient tracks from Oblivion with Bells (I'll check which one later) was playing as the auditorium filled up. Very enjoyable!

It boggles the mind.
Look at KMFDM. I would venture to say that on a worldwide level, they have a similar level of success, if not LESS so than Underworld.
Yet they have a well-run, user-friendly, consistent web shop that offers fans nearly all of their catalog in physical/digital formats, one-offs, exclusive merch, etc. with (from what I can tell) few complaints.
Maybe it's apples/oranges here, but it IS possible to do this well and it guts me that my favorite group can't seem to get it together.

So, I finally got the download to complete. Here's are a few thoughts after having skimmed through it really quickly without listening to it fully.
Basically, it's fairly similar to their previous soundtrack work on Breaking and Entering and Sunshine. If you're a fan of those soundtracks, you'll like this one.
The soundtrack is 1 hour, 30 seconds. Over 40 minutes of music from the play, plus the Overture which is over 17 minutes.
The Overture is an amazing, layered cornucopia of new and old, released and unreleased Underworld sounds. So far I've identified "ArtJam Untitled-2" (heard in the Beautiful Burnout ArtJam), the drone-y sound used in Sunshine and Loads of Birds, Choppo, Dawn of Eden, Dub Shepherd, Wedding Song and Bedroom, Small Conker and a Twix, Untitled 2004-2 (showed up on a couple webcasts).

yea - and check out GusGus's webpage...
http://gusgus.grapewire.net/
not only do they have clothes, but - they have an INCREDIBLE selection of downloads available, all in 320 kbps AAC
like - I'm not 100% positive, but I think you can literally download every single bside and remix of their tracks (even ones done by other artists) and stuff that used to be seriously hard to find (like "This is Normal" as an instrumental album or their first album that was only released in Iceland. Back in the day - I spent waaaaaayyyy too much time trying to find that one -> I've only been able to listen to it since it came on their webshop)

FYI, the shop is now saying that the CD will ship in early April.
Also, for the MP3's, it turns out that each MP3 file has the full 1.7 MB artwork jpg embedded in it. It was making my iTunes lag a little bit each time I selected a new track, because it had to read and render that huge artwork file. If you want to save 30 MB of disk space and maybe speed up your player (or at least keep it from loading monster-size artwork; might be an issue for portable players), then clear the artwork on all the files. You can do this in iTunes by selecting all the files, and then choosing Get Info. Put a checkmark in the Artwork box, and then click OK, and it should clear all the artwork.

Dear Underworld HQ,
If I might offer a suggestion: Charge an extra quid for the physical CD and give those who buy it a download code for the digital version. That way you'll bring in a little extra revenue and those who buy the CD won't be encouraged to take part in torrenting to get a copy of the music they just bought.
I'm just sayin'.
Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
An UW Fan

It is fairly dynamic (like most classical music) therefore gets very loud when a lot of stuff is happening, but tends to be quiet when not much is going on.

no I mean barely audible thru the iphone earbuds. I can't listen to the Overture on my phone. It's practically silent for minutes at at time.
On the comp, I need to turn the volume way up -- much higher than any other album.

hmm... well - when I played it on my laptop - it was really hard to heard the majority of songs - except for those HEAVY CRASHING NOISES
As far as my actual iPod... I've only listened to the Overture and did like a reeeaaaaalllly quick skim through the other tracks. .... but anyway
yea - it is hard to hear some parts but it didn't seem as bad as when I played it via computer speakers (I mean - it was easier to hear on headphones than on my speakers - but I don't use those standard white iPod headphones, I've got Shure headphones/earbuds - forget model number). I could hear definite things going on on the "Overture" - there's just a lot of low drones and soft synth
But I think this is down to the fact it's not an "album" and it's not even really a "soundtrack" in the sense of a normal soundtrack. I mean - this is for the theatre, where it's more sound effects and cues for actions within the play
I used to help with audio stuff back when I dated a girl who was getting her BFA in technical theater, and more often than not - they'd only use like... less than 30 seconds of any track -> be it ambient tone, instrumental track, or even a full on song (or with a "full on song" you'd get more than 30 seconds - but like never the full length song... unless it was a musical... but now I'm just rambling)

Not sure I understand the question? The digital copy and physical CD are separate products. But AFAIK, they are identical in content.
As for the volume, yes, this hasn't been brickwalled like most music releases are today. It has a large dynamic range, so the softs are going to be softer, and the louds are going to be louder.
potatobroth, regarding your inaudibility on the iPhone, do you maybe have the Volume Limit function turned on?
Ugh, do not "normalize" it....it will sound worse. :(
If you're going to try to do that, you'll probably want to apply some dynamic range compression first.

funny you mention them, i worked on one of their websites
a long time ago, and know the manager and representative
that handles all that.. he's a good friend of mine..
we have a lot of discussions about music, and the future of
digital downloads, etc.. he's a big believer in offering as much
product, and as many formats as possible..(however digital is
taking over)...
their situation is different when it comes to the copyrights, back catalogue
etc... i'm pretty sure that underworld's situation is a lot more complicated..
or they might be in the process of doing it now.. not sure about that..
but yeah, underworld need sto work on it, and get someone in charge
to straighten it out, and finally put some order to it.. i'm sure there
would be a lot of volunteers (or even hire somone! hint hint!)

Has anyone figured out all of the recycled UW tracks used in the intro track: Overture
Here are my obvious selections... I know there are tons more
at 3:30 - 11 Hundred Hz from RiverRun series- I'm a Big Sister, and I'm a Girl, and I'm a Princess, and this is my Horse
at 11:44 - Cuddle Bunny Vs The Celtic Villages from Oblivion With Bells
at 15:12 - Small Conker And A Twix (or part of Trey's Fate from Sunshine soundtrack)
Other recycled bits from old UW tracks that are now part of the Frankenstein sounds:
the melon man - Mr & Mrs Christmas AKA Distortions - Underworld (Sunshine soundtrack)
choppo - Mr & Mrs Christmas
the girl - Mr & Mrs Christmas
belfort novatel kipper - Mr & Mrs Christmas
Corazon Finds the Seedling - Underworld (Sunshine soundtrack)

I'll have to check the timing, but i'm pretty sure i hear them in the overture. Such a mish-mash of UW loops and favorite bits from the full soundtrack.
I had no problems with the download (thanks, UWLive!) and have listened through several times. Excepting the UW influences above, this is very different from previous efforts... even from Breaking and Entering, which was very orgainc-sounding. This has choir, baroche guitar, industrial/noise, orchestral passages...a bit of beat and vox to recall UW but decidedly a departure from what we knw of the band. Excellent, intriguing, engulfing listen.
