According to the a mailing list I got. Blurb:

"In other news, straight after the tour Rick and Karl are getting stuck into a new theatre project. We’ll post details on the site as soon as we can say more about it – all we can say at the moment is that it’s massively exciting."

Nope, I don't think anyone noticed. Nice find. Although Danny Boyle being involved should have been a clue to dig deeper, and then we might've seen the credits page.

Hoping for a recording!
Yeah, maybe an official cast recording CD release?

Edit: http://blog.moviefone.com/2010/01/21/danny-boyle-frankenstein-tell-us-more/

Screenwriter Nick Pear (Persuasion) has penned the play, which will be filmed for a television airing for those who can't make out to the South Bank for the real deal.

Although that was from January, so who knows if that's still the plan. I had no idea that Boyle originally came from the world of theater.

Edit 2: Some music details: http://www.collider.com/2010/11/07/danny-boyle-interview-127-hours-paani-frankenstein-olympics/

The Royal (National Theatre which houses the Olivier where the play will be) is known for musicians and employs a lot of musicians. So, will you score it?

Boyle: Well, I’m hoping to kind of musically score it to a degree, but it’ll be a play of performance and speech and there will be some musical elements in it (but it won’t be a musical).

Edit 3: Collaboration with Alex Baranowski
http://alexbaranowski.co.uk/2010/12/02/frankenstein-directed-by-danny-boyle/

Very pleased to announce I’m presently working with electro duo Underworld, arranging the score to the much anticipated Frankenstein directed by Oscar winning Danny Boyle, and opening at the National’s Olivier Theatre in February 2011.

We just got the official press release from their PR this morning - here is the scoop:

http://cdn.stereogum.com/files/2010/09/underworld-promo-2010.jpg

Underworld rolled into 2010 packing magic and zeal to spare. Flexing their creative muscle across music, television, performance, art and technology, the multimedia extravaganza founded by Rick Smith and Karl Hyde released their sixth studio album, dropped a stack of thumping singles, toured extensively, debuted on US Late Night television, and presented an art exhibit in Japan. Wrapping up an astoundingly successful year with a new single, the electronic powerhouse reunites with Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle and appears with David Lynch on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic in early 2011.

Capitalizing on the collaborative spirit that has constantly reinvigorated their sound and imagination, Underworld's sixth studio album, "Barking" (OM Records) featured a slew of guests including Paul Van Dyk, Dubfire, Mark Knight and D. Ramirez. USA Today praised Barking's first single "Always Loved a Film" as "a dizzying seven-minute house groove saturated in funk.” The cover artwork for Barking was created by design troupe Tomato (which Smith and Hyde co-founded with John Warwicker in the early '90s). Their latest single "Bird 1" dropped November 23rd, featuring remixes by Pete Tong and Mark Broom.

From their earliest days, Underworld have been multimedia provocateurs, pushing the boundaries of post-modern musicianship, inspiring icons like long time collaborator Brian Eno to seek them out for the Pure Scenius project, where they played largely improvised gigs at Sydney’s Opera House and at the Brighton Festival.

Ahead of the curve, Underworld were one of the first acts of their scale to leverage social media to their advantage, directly selling their own records online in 2005 with the Riverrun Project, an Internet/fan exclusive series of mix sets. In 2005 they beamed a show live from Tokyo free to the world via www.underworldlive.com (http://www.underworldlive.com/) in what was a world first. In August 2009 they continued their series of incredible groundbreaking live audio-visual broadcasts becoming the first artists to broadcast live to iPhone users globally, from The Fox Oakland Theater.

This past August Karl Hyde had his first solo art exhibit in Tokyo where the album debuted at #1 on the charts. Titled “What’s Going on in your head while you’re dancing,” the exhibit showcased over 90 pieces of Hyde’s visual art. In addition, The Edinburgh Festival staged a Frantic Assembly and National Theatre of Scotland production titled “Beautiful Burnout" that won a Fringe First Award.

Proving no medium was immune, Underworld beat fellow electronic giants Daft Punk, The Chemical Brothers, the Prodigy, Crystal Method and even Kraftwerk to the US Late Night TV slot, appearing on NBC's Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

Thanks in large part to its featured role in Danny Boyle's movie, Trainspotting, Underworld's biggest hit "Born Slippy" wound up selling over 1 million copies. Years later, the collaboration with Boyle continues to break new ground as Smith & Hyde blur the lines between arts, providing the music and sound score to Boyle's theatrical adaptation of Frankenstein opening at London's National Theatre in February. Prior to that, on January 17, they appear on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic, with special guest David Lynch in support of Lynch's remix music project.

As the rest of the music industry stumbles across an ever-shifting landscape, Underworld's decades-strong stride across genres and mediums continues unabated.

Infinite Love for Underworld:

"Underworld's most consistent album in more than a decade."
Washington Post

"Embraces their classic sound but adds an undeniably fresh vibe"
MTV News

"Underworld’s songwriting stays nonconformist, evading dance-music obviousness for longer melodies and more literary, elusive thoughts."
NY Times

"Barking inhabits an odd place: half-dolorous electro-pop, half-affirming sunnyside jams."

Pitchfork (http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/14655-barking/)

"Earnest emotions surprisingly suit these dance-floor surrealists"
SPIN

"The combination of über-flâneur Karl Hyde’s Whitmanesque lyricism and Rick Smith’s virtuoso beat-mastering makes it pretty much impossible to walk in to an Underworld set without a big dopey grin seizing your face for a good couple of hours."
URB

"Burning even brighter in a kind of blazing twilight that just might be the sun coming up after an all-nighter"
Paper Magazine

“Barking is the sound of veterans re-energised”
Uncut

“Skipping beats and cavernous bass”
MOJO

“Up with their hypnotically melodic best”
The Sun

“Ranks with their very best material to date”
Clash

“A blistering return”
Mixmag

“Still unmistakably Underworld”
The Observer

The National Theatre is broadcasting Frankenstein in HD on March 17!

In Belgium, we can go see it in the Kinepolis theaters, so I guess it will be projected in other countries as well :)

These HD broadcasts usually start with half an hour of introductions and interviews...

Tix in BE are 15 Euro (website in Flemish):

Thanks for the info. The article made it sound like just the UK was getting the different second screening.

The place near me that broadcasts these NTL plays already airs two screenings, but they're always the same. For example, they're showing the King Lear one this Friday, then having another screening next month of the same broadcast. Wonder if Rick or Karl & Jonny Lee Miller ever talked about working remotely together in Hackers (Jonny's character "Zero Cool" riding the arcade motorcycle game to the music of Cowgirl) those many years ago.

Also plenty to discuss if UW are fans of the amazing Showtime series Dexter, as he was one of the main characters on the recent fifth season. Can't say that I can picture him as Frankenstein's monster though, very weird.:)

From todays Sunday Times:

The music from Underworld is also superb throughout - expertly used by Boylem as you might expect - and the Creature's primal, jerky little dance of joy before the risingg sun with the birds ascending is deeply touching,

Looks like hearing the music might not give the full effect until shown with the actual visuals.

Not sure if many people have two showings of the NTL broadcasts, but I just found out that the one near me is indeed going to be showing both versions. This university usually just show the same broadcast on their second screening, but they just verified they'll be showing the 24 March version instead of doing a re-broadcast of the 17 March version. Hopefully that's happening elsewhere outside the UK for people interested in that.

Well, really enjoyed the play yesterday. I only go to the theatre once or twice a year at most so cant offer a great critique but I can say that the production was amazing - the set changes were very clever and believable. The performance of the two main characters was also great (in fact there are lost of good characters). In the first 10/15 mins it really draws you in and grabs your attention. I wont mention any highlights for me as I dont want to write any spoilers - but I was not familiar with the story and there was some shocking and unpredicatble moments.

As for the Underworld contribution - I would say their music was using relatively sparingly. Dawn Of Eden will turn out to be a recognisable track and there were probably 2/3 other moments that will produce 'recognisable' music (kind of folk tracks). I could have been hearing things, but I'm sure I heard 'walk with me' played on a loop at some point - maybe the same sample with less distortion as used in one of the river run series (cant remember which). There was some acoustic guitar and I vividly remember hearing some singing thinking it was karls voice through a vocoder. And, I think Small Conker was played right at the beginning.

Trying to be indipendent (which is not easy) - I think the music worked really well with the play :)

There was a couple of barking type shirts for sale (black/white t-shirts with the letters on different lines) - one saying Frankenstein and I think the other was 'boom boom heartbeat'. The Barking box was also for sale.

Can't wait to see what they put together for the soundtrack and how it work without the visuals.

I have only seen Danny Boyle´s Slumdog Millionaire and a few pieces of Trainspotting on YouTube but judging from that, intense scenes and themes seems to be his speciality.
It was full house yesterday with many artistic people, yet after 15 minutes, when the monsters pains reached the climax, some people leaved the cinema.
I guess that means the team made a great work :)

That would be great. I noticed there sure seemed to be a lot of chatter and requests for a dvd/blu release on the NTL Twitter and Facebook accounts.

But NTL has been recording and broadcasting their productions for two seasons and I don't know of any of those being released on dvd so far. But it seems like it exists in a physical (downloaded?) form because of how they tend to be on a tape delay. The place I saw it even had it on pause mode up on the screen at the beginning while a person spoke about donations/turn off phones/why they're not showing the Cherry Orchard broadcast.

But it seems like it exists in a physical (downloaded?) form because of how they tend to be on a tape delay. The place I saw it even had it on pause mode up on the screen at the beginning while a person spoke about donations/turn off phones/why they're not showing the Cherry Orchard broadcast.

Digital Cinema Package (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Cinema_Package). Usually distributed to theaters via hard drive or satellite, I think.

Aw, bummer about the info. Cheers on the link. I wonder what happens to the content on each respective hard drive then.

Thanks for the correction on that and providing the exception. Too bad the audience for Frankenstein isn't the same as Cat in the Hat!

Ah, but that wasn't an NT Live broadcast. Here's a list of the NT Live broadcasts so far:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Theatre_Live#List_of_Productions

As they said on their Facebook, they currently have no plans to release any. In fact, in checking their Facebook again, someone just asked specifically about Frankenstein:

http://www.facebook.com/DoctoretteWho/posts/10150133095028857

"Thanks for your interest in DVDs of the production. We are currently limited by our rights agreements with actors and unions so as not to be able to offer DVDs of our broadcasts. We are also keen to build the live communal audience for the broadcasts. But DVDs are certainly an area we may explore in the future. Emma - National Theatre"

Probably get recycled (sent back to be loaded with new content). Given that the content is all encrypted, it's entirely possible that the encryption keys expire after a certain time period, and the content becomes inaccessible.

Saw Frankenstein at the theater today. Great take on a classic story. Probably my favorite telling of it, tbh. I wish it had been a film and not a play but it was good as it was. I think Boyle could do so much more with a movie but he did great with the minimal sets and dramatic lighting. Underworld's music was well done and perfectly used. Wish I had bought a ticket to see the lead rolls swap but once will have to do.

Apparently, both versions are returning for encore screenings in June:

2 year old thread necro-bump! The topic is fitting of that though...

Those local to the Seattle, Wa area will be interested to hear this. SIFF is doing 6 showings of a recorded version of the play, one each night of each cast for 3 nights (Oct 31st to Nov 2), $20/show.

Actually NT Live is rebroadcasting it everywhere, so check for your local theatre if you want to see it:

Thanks for the heads up! I live near some places that will be showing this. Where I live there is a Monday showing with 'Original Casting' and a Wednesday showing with 'Reverse Casting'. I'm sure I can't go wrong with either cast, but anyone have a recommendation of which one to see?

I preferred "Original Casting" slightly. That's with Cumberbatch as the Creature.

My work schedule permitting (fuck yeah food service!) the SO and I will be doing both showings on the 2nd and will get to see both casts! Time to bust out my very well worn EE shirt.

Saw both casts last night and I overall preferred Miller's creature, with a couple points that Cumberbatch did better, though both were just fantastic. The opening birth scene I overall preferred cumberbatch though at some point it just felt overwrought as well as the closing scene I preferred cumberbatch, but for the rest of it I preferred miller as the creature. He did a much better job with the creature's rise as Frankenstein fell.

The music and overall production makes it VERY obvious this was a dry run for the Olympics. Lots of reused sounds and ideas and familiar set stylings from both Boyle and Rick.

After the first showing I heard the pair of Cumberbatch/Sherlock fan girls (most of the crowd fit this description... :/) behind us say they were gonna get the soundtrack. :) Hearing someone say, "The director is well known, I think, He got an oscar and did the olympics in Beijing." in the lobby between showings made me cringe though.

Me and Stimpee managed to go to a screening of this recently in The Hague, both wearing Underworld shirts of course :) It was the version with Cumberbatch as prof Frankenstein and Miller as the creature. I can't even remember the last time I went to see a play, and even though this was of course not a live performance but a screening of a recording it was still definitely a wonderful experience. Some great set designs and solid performances by all the cast. Must have been a very physically taxing role to play the creature. Cinema was full of Cumberbitches too ;) It seemed to be quite popular. The two Amsterdam screenings were sold out and this pretty much was as well. I was actually not really famililiar with the story apart from what you get from pop culture references, but we do have the book here at home so I'll definitely read it as soon as time allows.

Looks like for the 200 year anniversary of the publishing of the book, NTLIVE will be doing a VERY wide screening of this, seemingly both casts, in late October. The play is fantastic, and the music is superb with MANY familiar sounds from riverrun as well as testing of stuff for use in the Olympics. I can't recommend one cast over the other, because Miller is better in both roles. :P

They've not done particularly wide screenings of this the last couple years, so don't miss this, if you've got any interest.
