Macross 0. Its a technically brilliant show. Story wise its so/so. Theres only 5 episodes, but it took them like 2 years to make.
It's not quite mech-related, but I thought the new Appleseed movie was unbelievably cool. Holy christ, and she wears some kick ass power-armor that's borderline mech.

Neon Genesis Evangelion. Arguably by many anime fans the best anime ever made. It's definitely a head trip near the end.

Cowboy Bebop as well, even though it doesn't have any mechs, it does have kick-ass spaceships.
I bought the first DVD of Neon Genesis, and couldn't get into it at all. Should I give it another shot, or if I didn't like the beginning, is that a fair indication of the rest?
Not really. I love Eva. There was a great thread on here once upon a time where someone went right into the significance of various references in the show, it ruled.
Oh, and san, Macross Plus is my fave anime evar. It has mech action up the ying yang.

I've seen all of Gasaraki. Not the greatest show, but I only paid $30 for the official boxset.
In this show you have real mechs and this organic mech thing that kind of reminds me of Escaflowne. It's very political and a bit difficult to understand at times.
Have you seen the new Appleseed movie, Tom? Holy mother of god are its action sequences well done.

yeah, I'd agree with Macross Plus. As a teen I LOVED this anime....it's kinda silly and sappy when I watch it now cause of the pop star concert crap and the love triangle yarn. Great action though!:)

for some old school super robot style shows i'd recommend:
Godannar - fun show. lots of babes with big boobies, numerous mechs and combining mechs.
trailer here:
http://www.advfilms.com/titles/godannar/trailerbuy.asp
Gaogaigar - most likely you'll have to look for the boots otherwise its only a region 2 release. there are 2 versions, the regular tv show (something like 50 episodes), and the Gaogaigar Final - which is a 3 episode special. the tv series is much better. it's like a mechlovers dream - robots that transform, robots that combine, robots that transform and combine, over the top action sequences, yelling out cool moves etc.
list of mechs:

Gaogaigar Final opening sequence:

Getter Robo Armageddon (or Shin Getter) - i've only seen this version (there's numerous ones after this series - Neo Getter, New getter Robo etc). this is great cuz: it's from the same guy who created the original super robot genre in the 70's; it's an update to the original show, which also happens to be the first to feature combining/transforming robots.

Yeah, I'd give Neon Genesis Evagelion another shot. I've learned with a lot of animes that you need to keep watching and you'll be rewarded.

Check out the Patlabor movies. Huge mechs and pretty good/intelligent story if i remember correctly (been a while since i've seen them)

I forgot about Appleseed! Gonna have to order that one...
Macross Plus is my favorite all-time...I was really partial to the original macross Saga and New Generation iterations of Robotech, and Macross Plus was a story that built on that history and was tremendously well-done in terms of story and action.
It's not quite mech-related, but I thought the new Appleseed movie was unbelievably cool. Holy christ, and she wears some kick ass power-armor that's borderline mech.
Saw that recently too and it's HOT.

I've seen Macross Zero and Appleseed 2004 now and they rock. Now it's time to get some of the others.
<3 for you. :D.
Appleseed is incredible, no? Check Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. In my opinion, that deserves the crown. I'ma buy it.
My video store has two Neon Genesis movies...can someone tell me what order to see them in when I'm done the series, so that I don't have to read the boxes and risk spoilers?

not the biggest anime fan, but i loved it as well.
i would like to get the whole series, but that runs about $150.
there's sellers giving it out for $40, but i smell something bad about that.

Of course, if you have cable, you can always watch Neon Genesis Evangelion on Cartoon Network. For, y'know, free. :)
Same for Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. Great series. The new season (2nd Gig) is showing now on Saturdays.
I don't have cable. Television is the devil.

I don't have cable. Television is the devil.Nah, the people who produce television shows (well the majority of them) are the devil. Or devils. Like Rupert Murdoch. He's evil.
Sorry, are you saying that the movies are basically a re-make of the series? They aren't complimentary? Because I just finished the series, and I can't see where it could really go from here, but the box of one of the movies calls it the climax of the series...

Because I just finished the series, and I can't see where it could really go from here, but the box of one of the movies calls it the climax of the series...Yeah, they're pretty much a remake. They recap most of what you've seen in the series and add new scenes into there, and they gave it a whole different ending from the tv series. It's even freakier! From what I understand, they ran out of money when they produced the final two episodes of the series, and the movies were their way of giving the fans the ending they wanted to produce. Trust me, it's worth the watch even if you've seen the series.
Wikipedia clears it up a bit.
Don't know if you guys are aware, but there's a redone version of the last disc of the Neon Genesis series as well. Saw it for sale today. It's the last three episodes, re-edited with new material. I guess they wanted to tweak the ending a bit. The packaging hypes unbelievable plot relevations, but...that's the packaging. Somebody needs to volunteer and be a guinea pig for us.

Yeah, I watched that, but I can barely remember it. :D Actually, after seeing that and the movies, I forgot what was shown in each.
MECHS!!
EVA - A Classic
Anything Macross
Full Metal Panic (1st season only 2nd season isnt heavy on mechs)
FLCL
Getter Robo - GIANT ROBOTS COMING OUT OF FUCKING EVERYWHERE! Literally, everywhere.
Saikano (She the Ultimate Weapon) is a good story about a lil girl who is a mech.
The new appleseed is pretty flash as well.
Gasaraki is decent but doesn't use its best mech enough. I think maybe like 3 episodes.
If you download stuff the new Gunbuster hasnt been licensed yet and can be found on anime torrent sites. That has awesome mechs.
And even though theres no mechs watch GANTZ. Itll change your life. Its great.
I think I'ma buy Appleseed, too. That was just too good...if only I could replace some of the music...
