View Full Version : Why so much dislike for Beaucoup Fish?

This was the album that I first discovered Underworld, when Cups was featured on a random music collection.

Seriously though, Cups is an incredible song that has so many ups and downs and directions, it could almost be an album in itself. Then there's the sheer awesomeness of King of Snake and Jumbo, not to mention Bruce Lee - a non-traditional rock song that screams to be played so loud. Bruce Lee is way ahead of it's time anticipating the video-game punk rock of the late 2000's.

Push Upstairs is the single and it very catchy, but completely works. And Kittens and Moaner simply melt my brain. Moaner is one of the best album closers in history. A song so intense and amazing with an insane beat, structure and lyrics that I instantly feel hungover after it ends.

Winjer and Skym are much needed ambient breaks and perfectly placed in the sequence to give you a rest.

Push Downstairs is a nice diversion. Non-harmful but doesn't add anything.

The only song I don't like is Something Like A Mama, which I just removed and now doesn't impact the album at all.

The threequel of Dubno, Second Toughest and Beaucoup Fish is a run of subsequent albums that rank up there with The Beatles and Led Zeppelin.

More or less agree with you. The problem for me is that many of the better tracks were just done a lot better on Everything, Everything. "Cups" is still amazing and I like "Jumbo" in any form. "Kittens" is pure bliss and it's hard to forget how intense "Moaner" is. IMO it's just a little more spotty than the last two albums and is kinda easy to get burned out on. But it compares well with classics like "Dig Your Own Hole" and is better than any of Fatboy Slim's albums (which BF is inexorably linked to in my mind)

The best thing about this album is the sequence of the songs. They were perfectly placed - which IMO most of the other UW albums lack. I do agree with Moaner being one of the best album closers as well. My biggest gripe though is the version of Moaner they placed on the album. The end of the track just abruptly fades - it's like coitus interruptus!

Something Like a Mama is probably the weakest link, but it does have some good breaks and drums. My suggestion is to take this track out and insert the full version of Moaner found on the single at the end and you'll have complete bliss.

i absolutely adore BF. it's brilliant, start to finish. and as 3495yaddayadda noted EE one-upped BF by doing every track better. the only low point is something like a mama but that's not enough to turn me off of the album.

on a song-by-song basis that album probably has the most 10/10 tracks for me. i love it.

Cups and Jumbo make my top 5. BF is wonderful.

The only problem I had with BF was the inclusion of Moaner, thanks to This (http://www.discogs.com/Underworld-Moaner/master/85467) I had already played it to death so for me the album closed on a low note.

The only Beaucoup Fish songs I dislike are Bruce Lee and Push Downstairs. The former simply doesn't work, in my opinion, and is a huge distraction from the flow of the album. Push Downstairs just sounds awful; a bad, bad song and one of the few Underworld tracks I genuinely hate. If "Please Help Me" had been there in its place, BF would be the better for it.

I wasn't crazy about Something Like a Mama at first but its grown on me over the years.

BF is my fav album. I wish Emerson would come back (despite the disparaging comments made by Rick and Karl).

I am unaware of any "disparaging" comments...Thought he left on good terms to pursue solo DJing.

It's my second fav album, would have been number one but Push Downstairs seemed a silly inclusion to me. Should have been Please Help Me.

I have This (http://www.discogs.com/Underworld-Moaner/master/85467) .

The relentless legs mix is one of my favourite remixes.

One thing I always questioned is why they have listed as the album version the 10min mix which is not on the album... at least it isn't on the release I have - which is the JBO UK release... and then listed as the "Long Version" seems to be only 12 seconds longer than the version found on the LP.

Any comments on this???

"Album Version" is the one that appeared on the Batman & Robin soundtrack, the first album that it was released on.

"Short Version" is basically the Radio Edit, and the version used for the music video.

"Long Version" is the long version of the short version. :) You could also consider it the proper Single version of the song.

BF contained an edited version of the "Album Version" due to CD time constraints. The full 10:23 "Album Version" reappeared on 1992-2002.

Not according to the Redbook audio standard. 74 minutes. You can read more here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compact_Disc#Main_physical_parameters

Were there more CD players that can't take tighter packed discs back in 1998? I have plenty of 75+ minute CDs but they are mostly quite recent.

Beaucoup Fish is my favorite of their albums. I never get burned out on it.

But then, i have strong memories and feelings associated with each of the records, what was going on when i bought it or when the LP came out....and that always colors my opinion of the album.

Uhm find some interviews from both sides around that time.

Also Emerson left by sending an official letter to the mgmt

Beaucoup Fish was my first ever Underworld album, though not the first time I heard them. This album will always be a favourite for me - as a collection of songs I think it is a complete journey of highs and lows. For me, this album scales highly on the axes of importance and perfection.

My third favorite Underworld album, after Dubno and STITI. OWB is a close fourth. This was also my first UW album, so it is special to me.

something like a mama is one of my favourite songs!!!

BF is probably tied with STITI for me, and the one i like the least is king of snake. i find it boring.

This pretty much sums up most of my opinions toward any LP as a whole.

Something like a mama is fucking amazing. I'm just going to say that.

BF is still one of the best albums of all time, IMO. I can't really understand hating it.

BF is the album I go back to time and time again. Jumbo, Cups, Shudder, Kittens, Push Downstairs, Something Like a Mama, Moaner - all classic tracks IMO

i can kind of see why some don't like it. it's very poppy and kind of stands alone as underworld albums go.

i kind of group the records like this:

mk1
----
dubno
stiti
----
beaucoup fish
everything everything
a hundred days off (kind of, to me, like a continuation of the less-poppy moments on bf)
----
riverruns
oblivion with bells
----
the new stuff

i think if i had to pick, BF is my fave LP.

I like Winjer, but it isn't one of the stronger tracks on BF, IMO. Skym, on the other hand, I think is great. Very moody and emotional.

I was gonna say there isn't a song on BF that I dislike, but come to think of it, there isn't a track on Dubno, STITI, and BF that I dislike.

actually, the more i think about it, the more i'm annoyed by this comment. winjer is far and away the best song ever made in the history of music and i don't think we can be friends anymore.
