if it really was that easy, don't you think they would have
done it already?

did you miss the part about licensing, distribution,
the artists intent, etc. etc..

i used to help out with the website for the band KMFDM,
and it took them awhile to get online tracks, the online store,
and a lot of other things done.. i remember it was difficult from
a legal/license viewpoint to do a lot of things.. (especially the
artwork part , because they had to deal with the artist BRUTE separately)..

just because it's easy to do, doesn't mean
it's easy TO GET DONE...

there's a lot more factors involved..

I understand that, but what exactly would be holding up UW? Don't they own their own stuff? Once their website is set up why would it take more than a day (or, more realistically, an hour or two) to add new material?

We wouldn't want this to go live without the copyright lawyers having a profound, reassuring (read: costly) look at it, would we?

I live in the UK, & have happily recieved mine.

On the price discussion, it is worth what people will pay for it. The market will set the price.

I have on had chance to have a cursory look at the book, & haven't played the cd yet. I like the bundle together though.

mine showed up today also.. (east coast, usa)..

thanks underworld for the great pre-christmas
delivery...

and yeah, i cut it close.. got to the post office
1 minute after they closed.. but they were nice
enough to get it for me...otherwise i would have
had to wait for a couple weeks (going on vacation)..

haven't listened to it yet.. will do that soon..

but after all this time i think in all fairness for the price of the book
and the music, it's a great package.... and well worth it.

got number 462 for me, and 463 for my brother..

I too had but less than a minute to chase down the mail woman as she drove back down the other side of the street after seeing the dreaded "Sorry we missed you!" card. If I had arrived home any later then that then I'd have been fucked............

I too have not listened to it yet, because I decided that there's nothing else I want as bad for Christmas ( :D ) and that I should in essense torture myself longer by wrapping it up and saving it under the Christmas tree. :(:)

I think BWS is a fantastic piece of work! It shows off the side of Underworld / Rick
that I tend to like the most. I listen to it on the train from work all the time! In fact,
the ratio of BWS to Barking plays is easily over 10-1 for me!

wow, "Dreeve" is really creeping me out. Anyone want to try to transcribe that???

- It might have been mentioned somewhere earlier in this thread, so I appologize if it
has, but the high pitched vocal parts in "Dreeve" and "(Soundtrack for the film) Van
Halen Van Halen" were conversations between Rick and John Warwicker that were
recorded (by Rick) as they walked around Soho about 15 years ago. I got that
straight from the horse`s (Warwicker`s) mouth!

Knowing the above puts everything in better context, and makes understanding what
they are talking about, and who is saying what, a lot easier. I`ve listened to Dreeve
pretty closely and you can understand most of it! They are basically having a light
conversation about graphic art, music, etc... Again, many probably already know
about the conversations, but for those that don`t I think this is a truly fascinating part
of the album, and (for the parts that can be understood) it opens a small and brief
window into what was going on back then in Rick and John`s mind, while at the
same time leaving out any specific references to pieces of art/music that they were
working on at the time!

btw - It seems that Rick used to have a dog named "Bill";)

finally got around to listening to it..
(ironically it was the mp3 versions that i re-encoded)...

yeah, its very cool to here some of the early experimental
sounds from them... i'm not sure i could listen to it a whole
bunch of times in a row though.. i prefer the more 'active' tracks
compared to the ambient ones.. also hearing the samples used
in their live shows and other tracks was really cool..
i couldn't keep the names straight, but i liked tokyo_london 2/3/dreeve
and van halen van halen..

still, it just show how versatile they are, and how creative they
can be..

hopefully there will be other cool projects released in the future..

I love this record so much. I think it's beautiful almost beyond description. Rick's unique use of the female computer voice has made her almost like a performer in her own right. Bungalow With Stairs is like her solo album with music by Underworld.

I have to say that I like Karl Hyde's work in this show much better than any of the art done for Underworld in recent years. IMHO the pieces stand surprisingly well on their own, sans celebrity factor.

My number was also blank - thinking about writing '1' in there and selling it on eBay for £1,000,000 ;-)

Wonder if the blank number implies overstock of some kind or test prints or more likely, just a mistake.

Love the album and the artwork. At first I thought it was just good background / chill music, but having listened to it a few time there are plenty of recognisable moments that make me think of this as more of an 'album'....

in the end, they really can't win..

1) release something online only -> people complain that there isn't a physical release
(see riverrun series, alll the latest singles from 'barking')

2) release something physical only -> people complain that it isn't available digitally
(see the BWS album+book, tokyo 3xcd, underworld video compilations)

3) release something in vinyl only -> people complain that it isn't digital format
(some of the riverun singles, although most have been converted over now)

4) release something limited -> people complain about the price, and how hard it
is to get it, and in what formats etc... (the barking limited editions w/extra cd)

so looking at all the different combinations of how they could release something,
to make people 'happy'..

it boils down to releasing everything digitally, on vinyl, cd, and at a cheap cost..
which i just don't see happening anytime..

by the way, i'm not sure what arrangements bjork/depeche mode/pet shop boys
have... but they have been putting out a ton of singles, box sets, and all kinds of
other fancy formats of all the above for the last couple of albums... i'm sure they
have a larger audience, so that's something to take into account too..and also, their
limited editions are not 'cheap' either...

So lots of people think the album is good? I sure hope (and expect) it is good.

Edit: Adding in this...I was hesitating on buying this, but went and bought it last night. I went a checked the shop a day later, about 24 hours later, and it is SOLD OUT. Holy shit, I lucked out.

For anyone who didn't get their hands on it yet, fear not.

I was worried that my copy would be returned to sender while I'm out of town, so I emailed them, and was told not to worry -- especially since they're ordering more CDs / Catalogs.

HA......nice summary....For me, I just want to be able to get myself a copy of some music to enjoy without having to jump through hoops for it. I'm almost 40, my job takes up a lot of my time, and I like to spend the rest of it with my wife, family and friends, not doing ridiculous online scavenger hunts just to hear a bit of music. And honestly, that's what Underworld seems to have been doing more of the past few years. Japan only releases where I'd have to set up a ghost address in Japan to qualify for a Japanese itunes purchase, or limited releases that require constant random checks of the website in hopes of catching it the moment 10 more become available. It's a little unnecessary in a time when digital files can be so easily made available to all. I don't think that's too much to ask. But whatever. I'm at the point where I've just stopped trying. Too bad for Underworld, because I have money to spend on them if only they would let me....

Weird. I have a full time job, wife, family and friends and don't find it difficult at all to order from Underworldlive.com.some people do have trouble ordering from there as you know. the payment system has had its troubles, and there have been very limited supplies of some items. I think taken cumulatively, since 2005 ish there have been a fair few "exclusives" that have been difficult to get hold of. This is an old argument. BWS was just the latest installment.

Weird. I have a full time job, wife, family and friends and don't find it difficult at all to order from Underworldlive.com.Setting aside the unnecessarily smarmy tone of your reply, nor do I. My problem is when they release stuff exclusively through outlets that require far too much work and time to get my hands on. But like I said, whatever. I just don't buy as much stuff from them as I would if they made it all readily available.

i'm curious as to what you feel is too much work,
buying from underworldlive.com ? ( or ebay -
which they've used in the past before the store) . i can think of only
one japanese iTunes specific release... what other hard to get
outlets are there?

as for BWS goes, it was ONLY a release at a japanese convention,
so technically it never got released as a full product online..
then they had extra copies and information was made available
that it was on the online store... one product, one step order..

conjecture here - but as far as copyrights and the artists intent (selling
the book with the cd) - there was never a plan or contingency to make
this a digital download or widely available..

so technically, it was available in a limited format.. and you have
to have checked the board/site to know it was there..

the same with all the live here now series, they have been long out
of print (but there were digital versions available) .. and the remaining
physical versions have shown up again - once more copyrights and
other issues come into play here (along with special japanese releases)..

yeah, ok, maybe if you don't check the board weekly or monthly you
might miss out on these offers....

but it's not that hard to set up the posts/threads to inform you that
a new post was added to the 'releases', and underworld does send
out emails informing about new material..

its up to you how you want to respond / enquire / purchase the
material.. i think they've been doing a great job on letting fans
know about all the different material they're making available..

being a long term fan myself, i have never had trouble getting anything i wanted, in days gone by i did scour the sites and web for everything, in fact i used to go to shops, when they existed and sold promos...and paid at a real counter!

now , i too have family, wife kids, FT job, and don't buy any Underworld stuff, for a number of reasons,
1. cost - i spent way too much early on, and i spend my hard earned on my kids now...
2. time - i don't have time togo and search for limited cd promos / vinyls any more,
3. space - i don't have space or the inclination to buy material anymore (i did pay out for barking though ;) )

that aside, and this is the main point, i still have every version of everything by Underworld i want on digital file, i cannot condone file sharing per se, but it is still easy to get hold of stuff, a little searching & asking can reap rewards, i know band are never gonna please all the fans all the time, but believe me they are not intentionally making it hard to buy stuff...

they too have wives, kids, FT jobs ;)

My partner Sarah is selling her copy on Ebay in case anyone is till looking for a copy, with the catalogue.

Seem a bit daft us keeping both copies, especially as she never opened her copy. It is one of my favourite albums ever, especially the hypnotic 'Dreeve', it was also the birth music we had for our daughter.

Hey Rick -

Please release a new volume of Bungalow With Stairs. Since the first's release, I've probably listened to it as much as any proper Underworld release and have found it immensely helpful in inspiring all sorts of things -- creative work, meditations, etc. I really, really love it and would love to hear more. I've even gone so far as to compile most of the similarly "quiet" art gallery, jammy stuff you've released on the broadcasts over the years. This is aw hole dimension of Underworld and your work that I think is as superb as the more "canonical" music, and I'd happily buy as many of these releases as you can make.
