Of course!

More takers?

And also, should we pick a theme again? The music's going to be super-diverse regardless, but sometimes having a starting point adds a bit of cohesion.

Recent memory compilations:

2003- Power On:
2005 - Dirty Musicians
2006 - Sounds for a dirty summer
2007 - Dreamgirl, I'm Desperate For You
2008 - Evidence of Autumn
2009 - Sweet in Winter, Sweet in Rain

So, sparing Sprintime, we're almost through the seasons. Do we take an UW lyric? Something dirty or completely random?

Bullets in Sweet Collision?

or

Quietly Violent?

or

or

Well one of the first three anyway ;)

Oh yes, it was! UW and Genesis vie for top spot in my musical heart.

But that's not the point.

Point is, every year, we pick a theme and let our individual creative tendencies run wild. We compile them and it always turns out veryyyy interesting! Up for contributing?

Hey Guys....

Ok, So with the new project beginning to gather momentum I am eager to put forward a few proposals to help bring our compilations into a more modern music world.

Last year we hosted the 2009 compilation on DirtyRadio.org and through various other sites. The compilation was never added to darksounds.org nor was it reunited with the previous compilations...

... we have to change this..

Recently I have initiated a move towards setting up a small netlable for dirtyradio.org through which we intend to release free to download compilations. However as we try to enhance the dirty community for everyone (the fruits of which will be enjoyed soon), I have been eager to extend this to the dirty community and offer a definitive location for all of the darksounds projects where everything from the ID3 to the cover art... to pdf booklets and info on the artists can be provided in one fast download to all who are interested. I want to take these compilations out of the darkness and get them out for all our new and old members to hear and see.

DirtyGrooves Records will distribute it's music through a bandcamp page and will of course be free to download. This will in turn be at the heart of the dirty community and its websites and out in the open and clear for everyone to click onto and find... even casual visitors. Bandcamp also offers embeddable players for us all to promote the albums with .. and of course get it exposure through dirtyradio... facebook.. twitter etc..

I am going to need some of you to get the earlier compilations to me in as good a format as possible if i am going to make this work.

This is going to be a new era for the dirty community and I want to make sure that this project which has been so successful thus far does not fall behind...

So I am offering DirtyGrooves Records as the new label through which we can release our compilations... let me know what you think.

Lx_Nen

That's brilliant! I can provide my old tracks in whatever format suits, I have the uncompressed audio archived here. Perhaps DirtyGrooves could even release some solo projects from us dirts?

Dig it, Dunwho!

I also have a netlabel, Believe In Billy Records (http://sites.google.com/site/believeinbillyrecords/), and if you guys don't mind cross-promotion, i can announce and release this years' compilation there, too.

The more the merrier. Promotion's the name of the game when it comes to free music, i've learned, as there's so much out there vieing for listeners' ears.

Let's take some chances with this year's compilation, no?
I'll strive to stretch and break my typical output, for one...

Cool cool... Holden do you mind sending me downloads for all the albums? I only have last years and while i can get 2008 and 2007 from darksounds.com I would really like to get the 2006 and older albums too!

Yes lets promote the fuck out of it!

However what I intend for DirtyGrooves is for it to finally give all the compilations a definitive home.. and it will feature on the dirty websites.. here on the forums and through Dirtyradio... so everyone will be able to get their hands on the whole catalogue.. whenever they want.

But for the most recent album of course lets get as many people distributing it as possible!

Buji

Sounds like a great idea.
I think it will be great for the comps to have a home to direct listeners to, keeping everything in one place stops any confusion and makes promoting it a lot easier.
Also think it would be cool to have it on Holden's label page too maybe direct link to dirtygrooves from other sites when promoting or we could get a widget that people can post up on sites.
Anyway big thumbs up from me!

i like "Quietly Violent", too. Allows for down and up tempo tracks. Not that we'll have a problem being eclectic!

Soon, i will get together theprevious compilations so we can put them in one place for DL.

Seems like we're getting a critical mass of contributors. Sure, some might drop out, but more can be added.

Shall we make a tentative date to submit finished tracks? It's early September. Is it possible to have them done by October 31? That way if we slip into November, we can still have this out this year? Whatever works best for most people's schedules...

I was hoping to create a simple PDF booklet with information on the artists and all that... a photo too... people can be involved in more than just musical ways. We could perhaps offer for the first time a Compilation of music and art based on the theme "Quietly Violent"? We can include hi res images in the pdf... its an option

Dig it!

I've created the cover art for the past 3 years. But if people have inspiration, i'm happy to let whatever looks best be the cover. Also, i think it'd be great if contributing artists give a little more of their personality to the booklet notes than just a few words. If we got a page per artist, that'd be wonderful. And if people are inspired to send in art/photos on the theme of "Quietly violent", that'd flesh it out, too!

Hey everyone, keep sending in the tracks... got a collection building up nicely now but the more contributors the merrier!!

Bandcamp have taken a shit all over my plans to host the whole collection there.. they have limited free downloads significantly and i have a feeling that eventually we would have to charge people to pay!! So I will work on seeing if we can integrate the catalogue into the "Projects" section of borndirty.org over the next few months.

Eitherway the new collection will be hosted by a few of us i am sure as per usual and will be downloadable in many places ;)

I just came across this thread. Can't believe it's already that time of year again!

I'm going to try to get something together by the deadline, but I'm not sure I'll make it. Dealing with physical therapy after my spinal surgery a little over a month ago, and in the middle of what could end up being a move across the country, so it's been a little tough to find time for music.

As for hosting the tracks, i can upload this year's comp. as well as previous years (if all are willing - though they were freely released then, it should be fine now) via Archive.org. That's what i use for my netlabel output, it's free, no download limit, creative commons license applied.

http://www.archive.org/details/AdvancesInObsoleteTechnologyScaryTale

At the moment, i'm leaning towards submitting the "Worried mix", though i kind of like the simplicity of "BAcoustic mix". The "Wax and Wane mix" is closest in spirit to the original, but is a tad overproduced.
Any advice? Maybe i should try a ninth version... ;)

hey guys,

Thanks so much for sending all the tracks and what not. Now its just a matter of putting it all together and getting it ready for the download package.

I am going to make the download available through bandcamp afterall.. for free of course.. and some others have also kindly offered to host the download.

The only problem with Bandcamp is that they have now limited the amount of free downloads allowed.. we may have to charge a small amount, like a few cent, for each download... but that is only if we exceed the download limit which is at 300 downloads (I think)

If we do start charging all the money (However small) will go to the dirty community website and help fund the hosting of the site and all other costs involved. Though we will try and keep things free for as long as possible.

You may ask why we dont just provide it through the site?? Or perhaps why we dont just offer it from our own servers. But the issue arrises when you start providing an album of high quality WAV files ..combined with PDFs and images... it can push past 1GB per download and depending on the amount of downloads a server could easily exceed its bandwidth capacity.

Using bandcamp is the best option right now, we can host all the albums and their ID3 tags will be perfect and clean.. also there will be a nice pdf package with each album... and even if we have to pay (a very small amount) further down the line then the money is going towards the very thing that brought us all together!

Reactions please.

I am going to be in London over the weekend (Brixton YEA!!!!) and will get to this next week... so peeps who want to improve their song you have another weekend!

Thanks!

Does anyone still have high-fi versions of previous compilations? I was just going to rip my CDs at a high bitrate mp3 and put them on archive.org. Some/all of the comps were probably ~ 192- 320 kb/s mp3 to start with.

Yes, this year, it'll be nice to share in high quality, since that's much less a restriction than it once was. But as for prior years, my guess is we're limited by source material, so size shouldn't be a problem.

Anyone mind if i compose some cover art again? Dunwho, please send me a list of what tracks/artists yhou've got and we can devise an order.

Thanks to everyone who contributed, once again we have a very high standard of work to promote!

We will hopefully have everything ready for release by next week, depending on how busy I am, but with all this wintery weather i can see a lot of time to do these things while i sit it out in my house.

Holden: I will see about having you upload the back catalogue directly rather than send me anything, it will be far faster and more efficient. But like I said i just need to get the page ready first and then things will get a move on!

Dave, I haven't received a notice that you've downloaded the latest mixed version of my second track. Do I need to upload it again?

Ok, as a test, i uploaded the 2005 compilation, which was called "Dirty Musicians".

It's in with my netlabel for now - we can move it to a separate collection if we want.
In any case, it's hosted on Archive.org, which is free, allows unlimited downloads, and affixes a Creative Commons license to the work, for what its worth.

Since i only have these comps on CD, they'll get ripped at an appropriate bitrate mp3. Archive.org creates various versions (e.g. ogg, lower bitrate, streaming). This one's at 192 kbs, just as a test, and if memory serves, the originals probably weren't super high res. But the later editions were, and we can at least slap 'em up at 320.

Enjoy this blast from the past, featuring the likes of Marshall Watson, Lucid Rhythms, Hal9000, Greg Thelen, Grandbrother, AViD, Maus, Sputnikk, Genetically Engineered/Krazy Kasper, The Sharkdog, and DJ Dinobyte!

Hey, it's "Dreamgirl, I'm Desperate For You" from 2007!

http://www.archive.org/details/DreamgirlImDesperateForYou2007

Somehow, i have 11 files listed on the Cd art, but only 10 on the CD - hopefully these are tagged correctly, though i'm going on memory for a few of them.

Quick update... getting the page ready on Born dirty... we have a tracklisting.. but i will keep that quiet till we get things ready to download.

I probably wont have a special pdf like i hoped because i simply dont have the time to sort it out... but what i will do is have a series of blog posts on borndirty.. maybe one a week.. spotlighting one of the artists on the compilation - links to websites etc.. and then of course another link to download stuff....

I think we will get all the artists more exposure that way!

Its sounding really good... and its probably the most experimental/energetic that we have had in a few years!

10 tracks seems to be correct.

My, that track of mine has come a long way. This one was version 0.1. If you want to listen to the definite version, then check out this link (http://www.tfhats.com/e107_plugins/flashmp3_menu/mp3/Mastered%20tracks/Dreamgirl,%20I'm%20desperate%20for%20you.mp3)

Also agree with KoS. Cool, gritty graphics, but the typography looks, if I may say so, like a quick shot. And the bar "|" on the left of "quietly violent" might be mistaken for an "I" (capital "i").

Then again, I don't have any say in this project at all...

Great sounds, maybe we should put it on Discogs...

For this case I made an early "work in progress" draft here:

http://www.discogs.com/release/2592726

Do you like a form, or you will change something?
It sems that Discogs dislike artwork which is bigger than 300kB:(
Maybe we shall put all Dirty Compilations on Discogs...

I was thinking of doing a Discogs entry, too. What to put for the label - DirtyGrooves?

I'd take out the stuff from notes, it counts as 'reviews/hype' and somebody will just ask you to remove it at some point - I spent an afternoon getting rid of all that stuff from my submissions because some dude decided to flag it up in every single one of my entries.
Oh, and mine should be listed as Second Thought (2) :)

Right, I've just finished listening to this, it's a nicely cohesive compilation start to finish. :) Top marks for the running order.
Musically, all good stuff, although three tracks really stood out to me - those by The Explorers, Sputnikk and In The Black Box. The other tracks are great too, but I thought those three deserved extra special praise. All in all, very enjoyable and I'm proud to be a part of it.

Has anyone considered doing something about the compilation for Dirty Radio?

Listened to this about 4 times today - it's extraordinary! Congrats to all that contributed. There are elements of each track that that really grab my attention, and as usual, it's great to hear a variety of styles, different interpretations of the theme. The care and craft are evident.

This, along with the fan compilations back to 2005 are now all uploaded to Archive.org, links in this thread (http://www.borndirty.org/forums/showthread.php?t=17307)
Free, unlimited downloads until the internet closes down, hopefully!

Excellent work by everyone involved in this years comp, and possibly my fave artwork too Holden :)

I agree with LX Nen on the way the comp sounds like more of a complete piece of work than previous comps, almost as if everyone was in the same zone!

Also ace to have all previous comps immortalised on the interweb!

Track 1: "Scary Tale" by Advances in Obsolete technology. Sometimes i'm AViD, sometimes i'm Mental health Consumer, sometimes Down Team Up. Different names for the same thing - barely passable music! But once you get past my opener, the quality of the compilation really picks up!

great Tin Foil Hats music, by the way!

"Spinal injury" as in prolapse/protrusion, or as in "ran my bike into a tree at a hundred mp/h"? Anyway, all the best for recovering, man. Hope it works out well for you in the end.

And just to be clear on this point: Screw the Internet (I'm still trying to detox from excessive use).

Hope it works out well for you in the end.I wish I got it in a cool way like crashing a bike. But it happened while towel drying my hair after a shower. Pitiful. It was a bad protrusion that was pinching a nerve in my neck dead, and causing the muscles in the whole upper-right quarter of my body to shrivel and atrophy. Good times! But the surgery was a full success, and I just finished physical therapy a few weeks ago. So all's well now, thanks for asking. And once I'm settled into a new job, I can get back into music as much as I used to be.

And just to be clear on this point: Screw the Internet (I'm still trying to detox from excessive use). I should probably do the same. Good luck to you on staying "dry" so to speak....

Anyway, I can highly recommend Yoga, as regards flexibility and keeping the pain at bay.
