View Full Version : Lovely Broken Thing : A message from Rick and Karl

thanks for your patience, we know it's been annoying, we're even scared to say it but.................we're ready!

Tomorrow/today (depending on where you are) will see the release of the first new underworld material for................well, ages.......and here's the how, why and where.

we will be releasing music as a series of downloads exclusively from underworldlive.com (http://www.underworldlive.com/) and wanted you to be the first to know.

the downloads will consist of 5/6 different pieces interwoven, mixed, blended, whatever you want to call it into a single piece 25/30 minutes in length. the releases will sometimes follow a rough musical theme (there's a dub influenced one already in the can) sometimes they won't - but the idea is to give us the chance to stretch out into areas we have only been able to touch on with traditional album releases, and give you the listener an underworld experience over the time it takes to listen to one side of an old vinyl album.

after years of recording, promoting, touring and falling out we think it's time for us to step off the treadmill and give our time to a number of projects and ideas some of which have been kicking around for years, firstly the score to anthony minghella's (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0443456/) new film, followed swiftly with some remixes/collaborations with some of our favourite underground dance producers/djs..............and there will be more, much, much more.

another aim of changing things is to give us the chance to respond to what's happening musically out there in the world and put an underworld spin on things more than once every three years - like the way things happened in the days of white-labels, selling records from vans and junior boys own....we hope you'll be able to hear this in the music. it will also help us refresh the live set with more new songs in a way we haven't been able to in the past, something we've wanted to do for a long time now.

none of this spells the end of traditional albums, remixes, tours, gigs it's just a way of getting music to you without the help of a multinational every time we feel inspired. expect too see underworld in the charts, on the radio, in the press and in your town again but in the meantime fill you're boots at underworldlive.com (http://www.underworldlive.com/).

my birthday present one day early :p
thank you so much for letting this happen! cheers to everyone involved, too!

currently dl'ing... boy, my musicplayer won't have a free minute tonight...

some impressions:
- the shop seems easy to browse & manage, even under linux ;) thanks for using proper html!
we are not using any copy protection or drm as we prefer to start from the point of trusing our customers. thanks for this too! no DRM! hooray! my linux box would be pissed otherwise...

- i'd be nice to know the size of the package, so one knows how long the download will take.

Plaudits for the lack of DRM from me too - I can play it on my mp3 player!

Very cool indeed. And you're right. They should add a size or time it takes to download stuff from their site.

About the music:

I love that first tune JAL in tokyo. Also Lenne Penny is a cool one. Seems a bit drum and bass like. Like that other band, Kosheen. Only then with a underworld sound to it :)

Hope to hear more of this in the future! I think we're heading to a bright one (future that is) :)

but I just got the complete download... and about to LISTEN!!!!!!

(edit)

and JAL to Tokyo sounds soooooooooo MUCH BETTER!!!!
I mean, it's been growing me over time
...but now that you can actually hear Karl and the bass, as it's not recorded off a stream or the radio... I officially love it!!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D

(edit 2)
oh! and it's got that jam track from one of the dirtyradio broadcasts... you know, the one where it goes into a sample of Karl going "halleluya"

Bit confused here. Bought and downloaded fine (didn't like my credit card first time, took it the second).

Went back to look at the members section and see the downloads, credits links. Click on them out of curiosity... and now I have three links to the new package in Downloads. Is the credits link to request a repeat download of one we've paid for? Or does it just issue a new link every time I go to Downloads, and I now have >1 because the old ones haven't expired, or what? Some info on these pages might help dim bulbs like myself who can't contain their curiosity. :D

It was mentioend earlier, but for future releases an indication of download filesize would be great so that us poor dial-up losers know how feasible it is to download.

Two listens and loving it mostly so far... 'JAL To Tokyo' is IMMENSE though - NEEDS a limited print on 12" though ;)

So far the excitement has come from the photography more than anything - I walk through several of these subways on my way to and from work every day and a lot of these shots were taken literally across the road from my flat, so why haven't I bumped into Karl out with his camera so far? ;)

Thanks to everyone involved for this - it's a lovely release. Here's some quick comments:

Ordering process:
Went ok, but could be smoother. Had to use a 2nd credit card, after the first one was declined for some reason (it normally works fine for web purchases). PayPal would be a nice option.
Had to download about three times because it kept on stopping half way. I guess this could be down to the server load, and it got there in the end.
The download link appeared about 8 times - I understand this will be fixed soon.

Package:
Really nice to have artwork and bonus photos. Makes it something extra special that retail albums don't have.
MP3 at 192Kbps makes me a bit unhappy. Would have expected 320Kbps VBR, and would have liked a lossless version as an option (FLAC/WAV).
Come on R&K... lossy audio is SO 90's.
Also, it would have been good to know it was only 192Kbps before downloading. A single MP3 is ok, but a cue sheet would have been useful for burning.

Music:
Nice selection on tracks. No killer tracks ('Moaner' / 'Pearls Girl' quality), but hopefully those will be waiting for the next album. I know the point of this release is to make something slightly different, anyway, so for that I'm grateful. The first part is very nice indeed.

Overall: Top release, and keep it coming :)

United Kingdom is listed at the very top. You often seen the 'important' countries (important when it comes to expected number of customers) listed first.
USA was probably supposed to be listed there as well and then someone fucked it up and placed it at the bottom. Or they did it deliberately. http://www.dirty.org/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Similar, but in "house name" I put the name as it appears on my credit card, and under city/town, I put both the town and the state, and left the county blank.

I think all you need is to fill in the same billing address as your credit card. I don't think it really matters what goes in what proper blank space, as long as all the numbers and letters match in the end.

i read it this morning, and then spent the rest of the day thinking about when i was going to be able to get it.

which was sorta surprising... i mean, i liked the new previews from live shows, but i wasn't quite feeling the spark yet, so i thought i might not be as fanatical, but 12 minutes into it and god do i love this beyond anything else right now.

That it contains the last bit of Lonely Bollock from the Dirtyradio show...I loved the ending of that tune, very nice to get an actual version of it. Can't wait to keep this on repeat for my drive back home Friday...

I think tomorrow I'm going to cue all these tracks up so I can split them up...makes it easier to listen to them seperately. It's late here in THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA so I'll do it tomorrow and post where I split everything...

Hmmm...I think it sounds more like STITI era stuff.

In fact the entire time through my first listen, I kept likening the sound to STITI. I think it a lot of it is as "distinct" as the sound on that record...if that makes any sense.

Thanks for the times.I might split them up via Adobe Audition so i have the mix and the seperate files.

Im also finding it hard to get the file to save to Itunes. It wont drag in, and wont save in.So everytime i exit iTunes i have to add it again which is annoying.

Hmmm...suit yourself, making it like a traditional album...though since this is quasi-mixed, i'm enjoying taking the whole thing at once...can always FFW (though why'd one need to skip any!).

Yeah, I was thinking of this...it could be like the old days of Pearl's Girl, Dark and Long, you know...plus I really like how it just comes across as one continuous song...kind of reminds me of the old progressive classics, Tarkus, Supper's Ready, Thick as a Brick, Close to the Edge, and so on...

Only real disappointment is the 192 kbps. Some of the vocals seem a bit muffled and to be honest 5 pounds for 7 songs is still kind of on the high end of pricing, which I wouldn't mind if the sound quality was like --aps or something...

i respectfully disagree...could just be the mix, but the vocals sound crisp to me, especially JAL to Tokyo...much better than either of the Tong broadcasts (although they were 96 and 128 kbps).

And the price? i;m just a poor student, but $8.60 USD for 7 songs is a deal, considering what CDs cost. Sure, slightly more than iTunes, but whatever, it's fair.

Well, it mostly sounds great, but I think my problem are with the vocals in Lenny Penne...they just don't sound all that great at all, but I'm not sure if that's a problem with the sound quality or just a bad recording, or what.

Also, just want to point out another thing...the tracks Dub Shepard and Lenny Penne don't really have a good divide point, so it's probably best to leave them just as one.

just downloaded this. From what I've heard so far, I wouldn't call it spectacular, but I understand that this is not neccesarily comparable to the traditional album stuff, but rather someting a bit different than they would have been able to release when tied to a record company. I really love and appreciate the idea and the direction this is/could be going and it's good to hear that there will still be a "proper" album somewhere down the line.

I disagree, based on the strength of this first release (3 songs in here that I like, ~$3/song isn't the end of the world) but I do feel that R&K should know that since they're using the Download project as a vehicle to drop some stuff on people that the band's not known for. But that's the thing, you know? There could be a ton of these downloads that may have nothing but crap in them, and I'd feel slighted then.

Of course, my primary concern was to come in here and give the guys major props on what I felt was a strong way to kickstart this thing into motion. But my advice to them - keep your price in mind before each release. If you know you're going to drop some real risky stuff, throw the people a bone and cut the price down.

I really like this idea. I like that I can directly support Underworld (and this project) by tossing a few $$$ their way. All of us have tonnes of bootlegs etc. that we listen too (some downloaded from UWLive, with more upcoming), for hours on end. Underworld (or their crew) don't see a dime for this, though it's pretty good advertising for how good they can be. And no matter how anti-filesharing you are, some of their rare stuff can't be bought in a manner that directly supports Underworld (i.e. Ebay). So if I can toss some $$$ their way and buy Rick and Karl and Darren (and Ant!) a latte, even indirectly, I'm loving the chance.

Remember, when you buy the tracks, you're also indirectly buying the bootlegs on UWLive....so to quibble over $2 a track or whatever for "Broken Lovely Thing" with some you like, some you don't, seems pointless when you look at the two bootlegs they have up right now being 12 parts and 18 parts, of high quality (soundboard?!?!?) bootlegs. So that's like...$10 for 37 tracks. We are getting a deal. :) (And that's not including the 3 other concerts they have posted in the past, and misc random/live studio stuff, which new/old UW fans can take advantage of without peer to peer.)

Heck, I'm more likely to buy high quality bootlegs than the studio material.

Thank-you Underworld!

I wish they would give all the tracks for free and put up a paypal donation button. No donations = no new material. Of course you would have a lot of leechers, but that seems to be what happens eventually anyway.

I felt that the 'fee' for the new stuff was just a donation and anything I got out of it was a bonus. I would still rather have a cd or vinyl release. Even a C90 tape would be welcome. But beggars can't be choosers, so whatever we get is fine. The story with the pictures was a nice touch.

Hi

Love the new release, and I love this as a way of releasing material. The artworks, and photos make this a complete audiovisual experience, as you would expect from Underworld/Tomato.

I would like to echo Chris's request, and some of the messages on the RTSR forum, that a Flac release would greatly be appreciated.

I would be happy to pay double for the quality. I would also be happy to pay for a Flac version of the free live material.

Thanks

Jamie

PS. Does anyone know what the font used on the cover is?

Looks like a variation on Palatino, the serifs on the 'T' lean out. Maybe my linotype version is slightly different from other foundaries, my 'T' has vertical serifs.

Sorry to be so 'typo tecky'.

Review:

Underworld released first new material in 2 years

Underworld released their first new material in 2 years, but for the first time they are releasing download only 'packages' available globally and exclusively from their website www.underworldlive.com.

• Anyone looking for a definition of the meaning of psychedelia in the twentyfirst century should reach for their ipod now. We are pleased to announce a new way of listening to music from dance music’s most innovative, cerebral and experimental group – Underworld. They’re about to raise the bar a notch with regard to their own output.

• These will be a series of listening experiences which are neither singles nor albums, but an entirely new way to hear their music. Featuring a series of interwoven pieces. It’s an opportunity for the band to venture into whichever direction they like, and release their latest music directly to you, whenever and wherever you want it.

“The idea is to give us the chance to stretch out into areas we have only been able to touch on with traditional album releases, and give you the listener an underworld experience over the time it takes to listen to one side of an old vinyl album. Another aim of changing things to this more immediate format is to give us the chance to respond to what's happening musically out there in the world and put an underworld spin on things more than once every three years. None of this spells the end of traditional albums, remixes, tours, gigs it's just a way of getting music to you without the help of a multinational everytime we feel inspired. Expect to see underworld in the charts, on the radio, in the press and in your town again but in the meantime fill you're boots at www.underworldlive.com ”
- Rick & Karl (2nd November 2005)

So here’s the deal. Taking time out from the corporate waltz which forces bands into a Groundhog Day style loop of recording and touring, Underworld plan to swerve standard procedure. From November 9th 2005 Underworld will issue a series of download-only listening experiences that will be an entirely new way to hear their music. Starting with ”a lovely broken thing” which morphs into a hypnotic bleep odyssey during which we get barely audible snippets of conversation (“When I was in New York she said”/”Get your legs waxed!”) technicolour flashes of glam techno and blitzkrieg sub-bass, all laced with sub-aquatic shuffles, the sound of heavy rainfall and one soporific passage which sounds like a lullaby by Kraftwerk. The overall effect feels more like a dazzling, disorientating moodscape to match the disconnected ambience of ‘Lost In Translation’. Think of it as putting the synth into absinthe. By the end, the stormclouds finally break and suddenly we‘re in the elevator to heaven, Karl beatifically crooning: “You smell good/ Touching skin to skin/Familiar/This is me/Where are we?” Even better, there’s already second instalment recorded.

And this can be all yours for just a fiver. Really, what are you waiting for?

The band are busier than ever. A quick rummage through Karl and Rick’s diaries reveals all manner of surreal adventures, from Karl’s recent graphic novel to an on-going collaboration with a certain sonic futurist, to a soon come film score to Oscar-winning director Anthony Minghella’s next flick Breaking And Entering.

Underworld will see you in the speakers.

suicidalpenguin - Sounds like a genuine corrupted download. I had the same problem a while ago when I got a new machine. Anything over 2Mb would get corrupted, so web browsing was fine, but downloading large files always corrupted them.

Ended up getting a seperate network card and everything was peachy, as it seems some on-board network connectors just don't work reliably.

I'd try downloading on someone else's machine, to see if that fixes the problem.

'WORLD PARTY
Download ace Underworld digital single NOW
09 Nov 2005

Dance boffins Underworld are giving you a wee snack before the feast of their new album and tour with a digital release that'll set you back a mere fiver.

'Lovely Broken Thing', which is a great name in our book, is live as of 16.00 this evening, and you can get your hands on their first material in two years by visiting this here website.

It's dead good too, and veers between lush ambient bits with rain sounds that make one need a wee, weird vocals about walking on water, and some damn fine sheets of perforated industrial noise.

'Lovely Broken Things' will apparently be just the first in a series of special digital releases from Underworld, who issued a statement saying that: "The idea is to give us the chance to stretch out into areas we have only been able to touch on with traditional album releases, and give you the listener an underworld experience over the time it takes to listen to one side of an old vinyl album."

We're having a sneaky listen now, and it's damn good

oh, i guess i just misunderstood the way it was worded. i dont see these as a sneak-peak at an upcoming album, but a complete album of sorts in and of itself.

its not like these are tidbits of unfinished work, right? these are complete pieces.

broken frustrated thing.
took me ages to work out the registration didn't like email addresses with hyphens.
absolutely no combination of CC details would allow me to buy LBT.

where are you connecting from, the Congo? I'm in the US and we're at the bottom of the barrel and had no problems at all registering and d/l LBT... but then again, I am on a Mac

And the price? i;m just a poor student, but $8.60 USD for 7 songs is a deal, considering what CDs cost. Sure, slightly more than iTunes, but whatever, it's fair.Actually, iTunes in the UK charges £0.79 per tune and this is £0.71. I also read that of the $0.99 the US iTunes charges, only $0.16 goes to the artist whereas I suppose most of this will be going to Underworld/Tomato... and of course, there is the addition of a 1419x710 size cover for printing and the numerous weird pics.

Hi
Love the new release, and I love this as a way of releasing material. The artworks, and photos make this a complete audiovisual experience, as you would expect from Underworld/Tomato.
Thanks
Jamie
PS. Does anyone know what the font used on the cover is?
Looks like a variation on Palatino, the serifs on the 'T' lean out. Maybe my linotype version is slightly different from other foundaries, my 'T' has vertical serifs.

Sorry to be so 'typo tecky'.dont apologise. i was trying to do a back tray for the release. it does look like Palatino but the way the 7 and 3 are dropped and the 1 and 2 are superscript makes it hard to reproduce. the superscript 1 and 2 i can do, but i'll have to work on the other. the upper case text also looks more spaced than Palatino Linotype. The 9 is also more Garamond than Palatino.

So I would check out Garamond. I have three Garamond's. Apple Garamond, Apple Garamond Light and Garamond and its the latter which fits the bill the best i think.

It's impossible to get this download for me! When i click "buy now" i'm taken to the payment page, i enter all the correct data from my visa card; and when i click "continue" all it does is take me to the same page again, oly with the visa card number and security number erased. And yes it's the right number. What's wrong here? Why is there no error message? Is there no other way to get this? And why o why isn't there a help page so i don't need to post this sor of thing here?

- end rant.

hi all,
i was looking through this topic and it botherd me that some people were moaning about the mp3 quality of lovely broken thing. i dont know why - as you cant even hear the mp3 compression at that setting anyway - the differnce is inuadible! - muppets!

anyway i think its wicked - has a nice raw edge to it like b fish - and i think underworld are gonna kick back again

But knowing that it's been compressed is itself a problem - knowing that the details have already been removed by the compression. We can only guess at what it should sound like...

They really should have compressed it with lame... (something like -V2).
The mp3 encoder they use produces those horrible gaps between the tracks:( (e.g. Blue Mountain is messed up completely)
I'd say that was the reason LBT was not cut into pieces;)

This EP is absolutely fantastic. I'm loving every minute of it. It's great to see UW pushing the boundaries of their own style of music, which is already pretty wide. It's fantastic.

Question: where did the tracklist come from? I've looked around but haven't found any evidence of it anywhere in the package...

If you go to the shop on uwlive.com, and click 'preview' it gives you a bunch of blurb about the release which has the track titles in there ...

I'm not worried about it being a crap mp3, I'm generally happy with and do download 192kbs mp3s but when I start buying music online I expect it to come in a lossless format. Depending on the sound system you listen to them on it will make a difference. I can quite easily tell the difference between a high quality mp3 and flac of the same performance which is why when I pick up bootleg I always take the time to wait for a lossless format release.

If there definately isn't going to be a lossless release, i will get it as it is; otherwise I will wait.

Rob da Bank one music 20005.11.10
Partly transcript:

JAL to Tokyo notes:
Karl: This is the most exciting and rewarding record release in the whole of the last 26 years togehter. This was the first track we recorded using our laptops , Rick wrote the music on a Japanese Air Lines flight to Tokyo and Karl wrote the text, walking the streets of Melbourne. The vocals were then recorded in a hotelroom above the casino in Melbourne.

Peggy Sussednotes:
Karl: This came together very quickly, recorded down in Lemonworld in Romford and studio Rick. This the second version of the vocals he did as the first one sounded like Mick Jagger. The lyrics came from a vision Karl had after meeting Mickey Mouse.

Dub Shepard notes:
Karl: The Dub Shepard likes reagge and owns a flock of red gold and green sheep. They use the track in the live show, it's one of the new pieces they've done. There is absolutely no resambelance whatsoever to how it started out and is a product of jamming by swapping laptops.

Monkey Wink notes:
Karl: This was apperently written all over Essex, Rick liked it's brutal simplicity and the ambiguity of the polyrhythm. The discription is as minimal as is the music.

wow - I didn't realize you couldn't get it on UW live anymore

why don't they simply open up a Bandcamp account? There are so many UW live / Dogboyheadset exclusives that aren't available anymore. It'd be unbelievably easy for someone to upload & sell them there

I really hope they don't skip over this era after A Hundred Days Off reissue. The whole Riverrun Series era needs to be reissued digitally/physically. One of my favorite periods of the band. This music deserves to be readily available. I hope they don't skip it and go straight to Oblivion With Bells.

I asked the UW email about the availability of riverrun and got a basic "not available, sign up for newsletter for any news" response a year and a half ago. Unlikely to see that change. It's up on youtube, though without the added photosets of course.
