To listen. It's awesome. Sounds a lot trancier, but in a good way. There's also a few minor lyric changes since the Brixton version.

it's ok. i kinda want to strip half of it away. BLD mentioned how the kick isnt as natural but i think that's what the issue is for the track altogether. take an ax to it, let the beat take over, and let it flow into those higher moments without weighing it down with this slick..
a little depressing to think of how far it's come in 5 years to end on this version (got quite attached to the silver boots version, then version 4), but it's nowhere near as fucked around as scribble, and ultimately this is where they want it to be. familiarity will have it make more sense eventually/hopefully

I'm reserving judgement. I was harsh to Scribble but it's grown on me and I listen to it often. Maybe once I get ALAF into the car with the loud speakers and the moving scenery, it'll click for me.
Hopefully the bonus disc track is the Silver Boots version. It's still astonishing to me that they allowed that ALAF/Silver Boots thing to languish in obscurity. It's part of many of my playlists and people almost always ask what it is. I think Underworld had a real hit on their hands with that one.
Thanks for the uploads as always!

what shocks me the most is the way karl is singing. he's doing it with his real singing voice, not doing weird tones and such. also the lyrics are clearer and expresive. somewhat feels like downpipe (happy mix), not that's a bad thing, it's just that it's like a standard dance song, but reminds me of cowgirl too! and that makes a difference.
enjoying it so far, mainly because it's crazy catchy. it's not ALAF 4 (my fav version), but that version wasn't fully developed. also, a happy, summery track makes up for the cold and horribly sad winter i'm living.
Thanks for the links.
Ok, my initial response is that I love the song, the only thing that annoys me is the daft pumping bass dance beat that is on throughout! It's obviously a modern dance thing but I know Underworld are capable of much better beats than this!
Same with Scribble really, good song but that Drum n Bass beat gets annoying after a while!
Anyway it's still great, just feel it would be a little less cheese with better beats!
BrotherLovesDub
07-16-2010, 06:20 PM
It's what I expected from Knight and Ramirez. They're not exactly skilled beat programmers but apparently they make your run of the mill tech-house floor fillers. Downpipe suffers from a rigid, boring beat too, so I expected the beat on ALAF to follow in that direction.
Overall, I really enjoy this version. Completely agree with criticism of the generic and frankly boring beat. Rick Smith is miles better at beat programming so other than giving these two guys some free money, i'm not sure their input really pushed the song in any new and improved direction.

I'm a little calmer now, because if you don't like the album version... BONUS DISC BIYATCH! And therefore you really can't complain that they "ruined" it.

Uggh - I miss "Always Loved A Film (Silver Boots)" so much - out of all the versions, the first is the best. I don't know how to feel about this version - I enjoy the lyrics and the guitar section is an unexpectedly pleasant. I need a few more listens...

i can't believe this came from silver boots. this track has way more in it, the breakdown, lyrics, everything... wow. silver boots was like 'hey this is a nice groove' but it never went anywhere, and was frankly boring. i dig this, especially the guitar breakdown.

Great track. Not sure about the "Heaven" lyric, but Karl has changed it and so he's obviously been thinking about it a bit. If you like the Brixton version, then listen to that instead. If you like Silver Boots then listen to that instead. You have a choice. I'd love to hear an extended remix, or instrumental/dub version.

So this is really going to be Underworld's 'pop' album, isn't it?
Yeah, I like this. It's ALAF, I can't imagine them doing a version I wouldn't like, but I'm very happy with this track. With a Lemonworld mix to accompany on the bonus disc... excellent. My interest in Barking has actually returned after the massive disappointment when I saw the initial tracklist.

If you dont like ALAF then its the same ol same ol...
Ill probably skip this track more than scribble when i get the album - saying a lot...

Thanks for the rips, guys!
Well, that sounds massive, even on my little speakers!
Agree that it's much more developed and polished than the ALAF/Silver Boots versions we've heard for so many years. But like YDS--> Scribble, there are the familiar elements, and so much more!
Kind of feel like compiling the various versions of the track and trying to spot what made it through, what went bye. Recall on the UWLive audio page that this was one of the tracks that just never felt finished for the boys. Maybe that's one of the utilities of so many collaborations - let someone else take a stab at it, what'd they'd like to hear in the UW vein.
As for the singing, hmmm, not so sure. Karl's voice is great, i just suppose i prefer the stream-of-consciousness/spoken style a little more. This brings back a bit of UW mki. But the 80's are cool again, i suppose!

07-17-2010, 08:21 AM
This is leagues better than Scribble and absolutely, without a doubt, shattering any misconceptions I had about a co-produced album of this kind. I don't want to come off as gushing because its a new track and all, but gush gush gush.
I strayed off the UW path for like a few weeks. This has me right back on it. Thanks boys!

This brings back a bit of UW mki. But the 80's are cool again, i suppose!I was just thinking the same thing. UW mk1 are back. Some of that is a good thing, some bad. You have lyrics not stream-of-consciousness, and you have verse chorus verse, and you have guitar. But, to stop it from going all the way Mk1 you have the collaborations which add a twist of the new.

I really like the breakdown in the new version.
The only thing that I feel that's missing is the bassline. Whether it was the original throbbing bassline or Silver Boots bassline, it was always a prominent feature of the song, and now it seems to be just buried and generic.
potatobroth

the one i hear strongly is the one that comes in just as Karl starts saying "the rhythm, the rhythm, the rhythm..." but upon further listen, its more perceived. i agree with y'alls now after listening to some older versions of the track. still love it. :)

I still stick by it being a good song but,
it's kinda ruined for me by the generic dance beat, almost sounds like it has been re-mixed for a DJ set much like Downpipe which I don't like.
Not a big fan of cheese dance club sounds and Underworld always had that cool way of making amazing dance/electro stuff without sounding cheese!!
On a positive, this will probably go down well in the dance scene and we still get to have a bonus disc that will be pure Underworld!

Was just going to post the same thing, wasn't a huge fan of the song after hearing it on Tongs show, however it sounded brilliant on a big soundsystem when Sasha dropped it.
In fact, my mate just e-mailed me over a video he took from up in the rafters when it was played, going to fire it up on to youtube just now. Sounds isn't great, but quite a cool vantage point.

Dare I say it was worth the wait?
The only thing I wish is that it kept the old bassline - maybe I just couldn't tell on the Tong version on an ok system, but as I recall the 'defining' feature of ALAF was always the funky, kind of shifting bassline; listen to the Brixton live version (which I absolutely loved) from last year (?) - now it kind of just has a more generic and steady bass there. Besides that all the new elements are ace. The guitar break took me totally by surprise and in the end I really, really hope Barking has a lot of stuff like that.
Also really hoping the "Silver Boots" mix is on the second disc! Bring it on!!!!
Heres the video for anyone interested.

This album is getting more hype than any UW album I can remember since BF, and it's 2010! (read: not 1997) Seems like it'll be massive, looks like every article about it is pretty much saying it's going to be better than BF, AHDO, OWB...
The ALAF single should be interesting...I wonder if it will show off any previous versions of the tune or just have an edit/remix? Sadly they did that with Scribble but YDS is going to make the CD2 so it's all good. ALAF on the other hand has like 5 different versions (including Silver Boots which is almost entirely different)

Oh....right.:o
I don't think I've heard any acoustic guitar on the Brixton version or any other version up till now. There is a vid floating around out there from the Brighton Beach Festival gig in Oct. 2008 where Karl was playing his Les Paul during ALAF. But I can't really distinguish what he's playing specifically. Regardless, I like the addition of guitar into the album version of ALAF or any other UW song for that matter.

The track is like magic for me. I love it for years. Its great that it will get single release. 12" would be so nice:)
The old versions from Elektraglide 2003 and Silver Boots were amazing.
So long we have been waiting for the release. Now its here.
I cant still believe it. Its like dream come true.
The message from Stimpee, where he said that we will be not dissapointed was absolutelly correct. I am not dissapointed, I must say that I like it, I like it very much. This is very special tune from Underworld. We have seen evolution of it. It will be nice to have other versions in bonus cd or single release. There is special feeling in this song, I cant tell you why I like it so much. Its special. I like it very much to see the evolution Birro the Leggy to Beautiful Burnout, YDS to Scribble and ALAF to ALAF:) Its great to be underworld fan. Thank you all very much for your comments and rips. ALAF is massive, thank you Underworld.
