View Full Version : Always Loved A Film

This song has been around for a while, in fact I'm listening to the two versions I have - the version they played on Dirty Radio and the live version from last year at Brixton Academy. They are barely the same song, except for the underlying beat. I wonder which version or what form the new version will take on the album.

Always Loved A Film (album version)
The rhythm of legs moving in the sun
the rhythm of an engine deep and throating
the rhythm of a summer that you walked in
The sound of a barking dog on a loop
A plane rises in crystal blue
The rhthym of keys swinging in your hand
The rhthym of light coming out of your fingers
Heaven (x6)
Can You Feel It?
Can You Feel It?
Heaven (x2)
The rhthym of wheels
The rhthym of heels
That we fall into the sun
She walk on silver
She walk on gold
Paints i love you on the alley walls
From the eyes that hide behind black glasses
Sunlight hits tell me what she passes
Heaven (x6)
Can You Feel It? (x2)
Heaven (x2)
And I don't know if I love you more than the way you used to love me
And i don't know if i need you more than the way you used to need me
But its...
Heaven (x6)
Can You Feel It?
Can You Feel It?
Heaven (x2)

Yea, the first incarnations were really strong, particularly the ones from their broadcasts (the instrumental from '06 and the vocalled one from early '07) and then the track seemed to have been gutted. 'Tis a shame both couldn't have existed since the latter version, as affore-mentioned is almost completely different save for elements of the original beat.
I remain cautiously optimistic that their collab took a listen to the versions and steered them back toward the original... :)

IIRC the version played on the May06 broadcast wasn't even referred to as ALAF in the subsequent tracklist, but just as "Silver Boots". I know for sure on the instrumental version prior in 05 it was noted as "something to do with Silver Boots and Always Loved a Film".
As much as I love those two versions, the recordings I've got have been listened to so many times that they ARE the official versions for me. Would I love a mastered physical release? Of course! But I stopped holding out hope for that when OWB came out.

I really loved the old silver boots version from the broadcast. Didn't really care for the new version so even though I don't expect them to have returned it to it's old state, I hope they've given it a proper overhaul anyway.

I actually prefer the original version of the song (before the "fast version" that got the added "Silver Boots" in the title)
where it's just that slow chugging beat
even when they first played it, and it just had the beat, random lyrics from "in the belly of saint paul" and the synths from Mo Move was pretty cool

i still have that old version of ALAF, where Karl is thumbing thru the St. Pauls book. Thats easily my favorite version of the song. Very rhythmic, groovy, sexy. The fast version that we heard at the Brixton shows is decent, but it doesn't have the same personality as that old one.

true. as with most of their material, it just seems to evolve over time till they finally decide that it's finished, and then they still go ahead and re-render it somehow. it's kind of like adding more seasoning (not the same seasoning - just a new flavor to enhance an already perfectly seasoned dish) and in most cases - they are quite successful. it's probably one of the reasons why i love their music so much.
as with ALAF from the iTunes Festival - I'm hearing elements from other tracks and they just work really well together.
can't wait to hear the album version.

not saying that the remixes of uw singles or that of almost any single is better than the original, but remixes make the world go round and i'm enjoying a new variety of mixers names being used - underworld like to use current and also big name remixers - Michael Woods is pretty much ambienty / dubby, and i think will suit UW, ffs half of what uw did with the RRP's was that style...

I think we all yearn for the days of the Pearl's Girl-style EPs and I can't see a better track for this than ALAF...there's like 6 different versions now, one of which is a radical departure and has been asked for by the fans for years, plus there's like a zillion unreleased tracks out there...
I know the remix is a huge part of the electronic scene and all but I can count the number of good UW remixes on one hand, most of the remixers just don't seem to be trying too hard...too much "grab something out of the garbage can that wasn't good enough to make your album, add the UW vocals, stretch out to 9-10 minutes, presto"
Still hope I'm surprised by this one, I mean I really do like what's become of the album track...

Exactly. The best Underworld remixes out there are generally their early self-remixes. Their single releases really started going downhill around Beaucoup Fish-era when the majority of the content on them was outsourced remixes.

Agrred, this cover art is better, in keeping with the album theme. The single color one with the floppy letters looks like a greeting card.
oh, this remix is not good. Totally random loops and sounds and the vocal effects sound like they were programmed with the CASIO SK-1 keyboard (circa 1989, $5 on ebay, great for making burp noises in different keys or, as i used to do, sample 1.5 seconds of drumbeats from Propellerheads CDs to use as background for sounds made on other Casios!). From the horns to the vaguely bossa-nova tempo and all the bells and whistles in between, this could have been made with any number of demo loops discs in about 5 minutes. Sorry, SOLO, try harder.
And yes, i realize this is how "remixes" are done these days. A shame. A really successful remix, imho, brings out the best elements of the original track. Take Trentmoeller's mix of "What Else is there?" by Royksopp, or the Pete Heller vox mix of UW's "JAL to Tokyo" - these are remixes from the past 5 years that i can get behind... they're reminiscent of the originals, they're beefed up, and they have something like a structure, not just a bunch of everchanging loops. But i digress...

At first, by how people were talking... I was kinda expecting something like the Switch remix, or something along the lines of those old FSOL remixes from the mid 90's - where "it's like a whole different song"
but this... IT DOESN'T EVEN SOUND LIKE A SONG. It sounds unfinished.... like someone playing around with their new "dj remixing software program".
Some of the sounds/ samples sound like presets that are way way way out of place. Like that little bell ring sound, the horn section... ugh
and then the bit where the vocal comes in - just annoys me
It sounds like the "remixes" I used to do with "Mixman (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nR3GYIOhIys)" back in 1998
come to think of it - the warble on the vocal section sounds almost EXACTLY like the warble effect in Mixman (if I remember correctly)

I've had a chance to listen to all the remixes a good few times now and much as it pains me to say it I don't really like any of them save for the extended mix by UW themselves.
I've been a DJ for 15 years now and remixes are my stock in trade, and usually I can find a place for different mixes in different sets, but these are just bland in different ways.
The Breakage remix is functional dubstep. It sounds quite nice but does nothing really.
The Michael Woods versions are souped up for the big clubs with big building synths only to kick into a stripped down tech beat. It's a bit like crossing Jacques Lu Cont remixes with minimal! They will work for the crowd they're aimed at but I can't see myself playing them.
The Solo remix is trying to be in the Duck Sauce / Fake Blood style but lacks any of the hooks associated with those acts. Again it just feels functional.
I have to say the original has grown on me. I thought it was too polished the first few times I heard it, especially after being used to the Brixton versions, but it's clearly got radio play in its sights, and it deserves to get it.
Still, can't wait to hear the version on CD 2. :)

"and long term Underworld team member Darren Price (Between Stars)."
Seems Price gets a credit on Between Stars then? Good to see him getting some credit.

I listened to the other edits on youtube (thx for the links!) and the Michael Woods and Breakage mixes are pretty groovy, actually. I'd dance to 'em.

I was expecting something similar to the Solo remix when I listened to the beginning of the Michael Woods remix... then out of nowhere BAM! Awesomeness. Likewise, the Breakage remix is some pretty quality dubstep... you know what they have in common? They both use the original acapella of the song in a recognizable form. I guess Underworld remixes can be good when you actually use some of the song being remixed (Underworld themselves get a pass on this one because their barely recognizable self-remixes are by them and therefore still "Underworldish").

Single w/ mixes has leaked but without the DJ Madskills mix. The Breakage mix is fantastic.
I won't tell you where unless you hook me up with the Madskillz remix. :)

The Breakage mix is fantastic.
Totally agree with you, although it's a bit short it's the best mix of them all, pretty nice dubstep material. That Solo remix is pretty hilarious/ridiculous, but I do like it somehow.
The Marcel Woods mixes are pretty ok, but nothing special.
Is this going to get a vinyl release? Because I'd love to buy those 12"s!

album verz of ALAF is fantastic! (could use a *little* more bass as in the merge from Downpipe at the Roundhouse show)

The flute-like synth part that fades subliminally in at 2:33 on the Instrumental mix is amazing and you don't hear it too well with the other vocal versions. Also love the piano stabs near the end....shame they are almost all but cut out of the Radio Edit.
I'm not sure I even want the (rest of) Dark Movie mix......that's tied for my least favorite mix with Solo's Warble Garbage Popple Mix from the 90's. Michael Woods and Breakage have a tie currently too for most awesomest. :)

true. Hopefully, I'll be able to find my new apartment in Glasgow by Monday.
At the time, I was just a bit pissed - as I've not been able to download anything. At the hotel I'm at, to download a single mp3, it takes 1 hour 46 minutes (and I mean using amazon, itunes, etc - it won't even let me get onto Beatport)
Or should I just get used to it, and the Uk just has reeeeeeeeaaaallllllyyyyy bad internet service?

Yea, thanks!
I was accepted into the Glasgow School of Art. I'm here to get my MFA in Fine Art. It seems like it's a very "professional" program... as in - they want you to succeed as an artist... and not as a teacher *, like some of the other schools I was accepted into.
As soon as I got my acceptance, I was pretty much "well - I have to go there" as I'll probably never have this chance again!
It's a two-year program, but I'll probably be here for ~3 years. I say three years b/c my girlfriend (who's also a artist/printmaker) is going to apply in order to attend the school next fall (she's taking the year off).
Over the past two days I've seen like... ten different apartments - and I'm burnt out. Although I've narrowed it down to two places I saw today - and another I saw photo's of (but won't see in person till Monday).
* not that being a teacher (or professor) is bad... Just the idea of being a TA for a year in a three year program, not doing my own work - didn't really appeal to me as much

Yay for me. I found the 8 track single for Always Loved a Film on a torrent site.
Don't worry, I'll buy it as soon as I'm given the chance.
The 8th track, the Solo Remix, I swear I've heard that before. If anyone knows what I'm talking about let me know.

I'm still having trouble warming up to the latest incarnation of the track.
I've been in love with the Silver Boots version played at the beginning of the 05-19-06 Lemonworld Broadcast ever since the first moment I heard it.
Karl: "Ooohh... you wouldn't believe how dark it is tonight..."
Still, I recognize that to truly enjoy UW, I need to embrace change.

my favorite version is still the one played on dirty radio many many years ago ("something to do with silver boots and always loved a film") - that song can be on loop for an entire day and I wouldn't get tired.

So, um....
I have to say that I've been literally brought to tears by this song. I'm not sure what it is about it - it's just so utterly beautiful, and it just hits so hard. I've been thru a lot of shit (pardon my french) in my life in the past year or so, and something about this song just sums it up, and it hits me. I can't get over the emotion in Karl's voice, the way that the melodies play off each other, the swells and builds are just amazing.
This song makes me want to make dance music that makes people feel this way. It makes me want to find the better things in life.
Thank you, Rick and Karl, from the bottom of my heart.

That's how you know it's a good track. It won't necessarily hit everyone the same way, but in the right (or some might say wrong) setting and mood, it cuts into you like nothing else. And from that point, you'll always remember the track... and hopefully, for all the right reasons.
