The old thread (http://www.darktrain.org/dirty/forums/showthread.php?t=10156) on it has a link to an mp3 (http://www.aloha.com/~tabanger/underworld/lvdiamondjigsaw.mp3) which still exists (and you can thank TheBang for!)

Hearing this song again just reminds me of how awfully cheesy that song is... really what is with the Dallas synth line? yikes...

I know that was a joke but so is Oakenfold and I had to sit through that pricks set three nights during the US tour. It's fun to make fun of trance pricks but it's not so fun when you have to endure Oakenfuck before Underworld. This isn't 1990 anymore, Oakenfold is not an acceptable opener. Make fun of Van Buuren, but please don't allow Oakenfold to come anywhere near an Underworld live show.

Speaking for everyone in LA, as long as they play their own show they can have any opening act they want.

Ehhh? Who mentioned Oakenfold??

As for the song...I do love those synths!! Kind of campy but I like that. I wish the electric piano sounds from the Doogie Howser TV intro got used more too. Great sounds.

First time hearing this track.......
It's good, but it belongs on the "Teen Wolf" movie soundrack, not on a 2010 Underworld album. It's got the trademark UW groove though, which is a plus.

i thought oakenfold hit his commercial peak along around 98 with that elvis remix. either way he wasn't good then and isn't now... it would be more appropriate for a prog band to play than oakenfold... the two just aren't related.

I think Oakenfold was good in the 90's when he focused more on a goa-type progression sound. I also thoroughly enjoyed the Swordfish soundtrack he made. Once he did Bunkka, it all went downhill for me. I've grown to really dislike trance music a lot. It sounds the same to me and I'm really tired of songs using poppy girl vocals that have to be edited like crazy in an attempt to sound decent. I'm probably being harsh, but man...

As for Diamond Jigsaw, I like it minus the campy synth. lol @ Dirty Canuck; I can imagine this playing in the scene when the wolf is "surfing" on top of a van. Good ol' 80's flicks.

okay, i've finally heard it. i have to say i would rather hear it when karl isn't gasping for breath. his performance on that version is pretty bad. the music itself sounds like the new single crossed up with some mk1 stuff, but i'm probably just saying that because y'all have been. it does have a certain cheese to it, but it's not bad. i just hope that it's not going to be the rule of what's on the new album.

I think I have you beat...

At Ultra Music Festival (during the AHDO tour) - I had to sit through BOTH Oakenfold AND Tiesto! Oh man... such a HORRIBLE experience. What was funny, is that while Tiesto was playing, he completely lost the crowd - most of them sat down, then the promoter actually came out to try and "hype" the crowd a bit. SAD

I also had to deal with Oakenfold at the Hollywood Bowl show... two of the people I was with actually brought their Nintendo DS -es to play during his set (smart idea)

and...

at the Hurricane Festival - THE COUNTING CROWS.... seriously yea... "Mr Jones & Me" and everything...

and yea - Oakenfold is a joke, but he did at least have a few random good remixes (U2 - "Mysterious Ways" and "Numb" Duran Duran - "Out of My Mind")

Ha, I always thought Oakenfold had to have some talent because of this, I loved the production on Pills & Thrills..

For the record Tranceport is a pretty good album!! But yeah his original material is pretty damn awful.

I saw Tiesto too...went for my brother's sake...yeah wasn't impressed, the crowd wasn't into it, the sound sucked...never do that

oakey is a legend.
he was instrumental in the development of modern dance music and the house nation we all live in.
thru the late 80's he was one of the most influencial dj's in the world (while most of america thought dance music was for gays, blacks and europeans),he started spectrum (which he should be knighted for) and produced records and bands which helped to shape dance/rave/house culture.
thru the 90's like him or loath him he was a main player.
i don't like loads of the stuff that he does these days but he isn't the "knob" some people portray him as.

Yes, I'm fully aware of Oakey's legendary status and the hand he had in the acid house movement. Respect to him for that. I didn't see him in 88 or 90, I saw him in 2007 and he was fucking awful. Jesus poses behind his cdj's. The same exact set every night. Was he doing that at Spectrum? Underworld keep evolving. Oakenfold is happy to coast on his legendary status.

Oh yea! I forgot that he thought Oakenfold was a woman.

It was also sort of funny b/c the girl I was with thought I was just being a "music snob" about Oakenfold. She didn't know his music - but knew that I can sometimes be a bit ... opinionated when it comes to music

...about halfway through Oakie's set - she was like "damn - we should've brought video games too - well, at least we have more wine!"

and yea - Oakenfold did do a lot of great things in the late 80's/early 90's... but he traded back in all his talent & credibility by about '98/'99

BrotherLovesDub
05-28-2010, 11:24 AM
Also, Oakey used only 2 cds each night I saw him. I watched him like a hawk and he never removed a disc from either cdj. Maybe it was premixed, maybe he just preplanned the set and burned every other track to each disc. The point is, this 'legend' did the bare minimum to collect his fee, yet posed like he was Jesus behind the decks. OH! He also did the hilarious pelvic thrusts as if he were fucking the mixer. If I had a time machine i'd love to go back and catch a set at Spectrum or Shoom but what he did on the 07 dates has completely destroyed any interest I had remaining in his work.

saw him in 99 or 2000... talk about an amazing set... i think what did him in: he grew his hair long... ;)

let's not forget the fact that he produced numerous records, not the least of which: Happy Mondays, Pills -n- Thrills (too bad i didn't read the whole thread before posting this...)

what about the first Northern Exposure releases and Perfecto, the first one that's blue and yello?

most artists have a "golden" period don't they?
very few keep productive at a high standard for a long time.
i know plenty of people that say underworld have been getting worse every year since "born slippy".
anyway... personally, i like to think about best of times not the worst and oakey has been responsible for or involved in some great stuff.
i think if oakey enjoys what he's doing then he's earned the right to do it for however long he likes.
there plenty of people in dance music to dislike more than paul eh?

end of the defence of oakey :)

Well said Jose. I don't agree with what Oakey has been doing for past 10 years or so, but it's hard not to admit the man was pretty incredible in his prime. And I agree that there are a handful of people that think UW have been declining, but it's like that for every band/group/dj. As bands progress and expand, they lose fans and gain fans in the process. When it comes to Oakey, I'll never forget his essential mixes from the 90's when he'd play clips from Blade Runner and then throw in a solid "Man with No Name" track.

Oakenfold plays cheesy rubbish these days. But yes his contribution to dance culture will not be forgotten.

I seriously hope that Armin van Boring isnt gonna rape any Underworld tunes. One to ignore. Underworld have had a good track record of choosing up and coming remixers for their songs and choosing something so mainstream shows lack of imagination. Voted #1 DJ in DJ Magazine isnt worth shit. This isnt a popularity contest. Underworlds reputation will be damaged by releasing cheesy remixes.

Maybe this (http://media.photobucket.com/image/trance%20sensations%20white/abm64c/sensation-white-2009-russia-sain-3.jpg)is the audience Underworld are looking for?

Should this be renamed the "Hate On Trance Heroes" thread?I think its an indication of the opinion that Underworld and trance arent really very popular here. There have been lots of dodgy (bootleg) trance remixes of Underworld tunes and theyre all terrible.

From listening to Diamond Jigsaw (the versions we have from last year) it doesnt sound finished but maybe the boys have been working hard on it and polished it up a bit.

I've been listening to Diamond Jigsaw more and it's really growing on me. That seems to be the way for a bit of the newer UW tracks, especially the Oblivion with Bells era. The more I listen to it, the more I'm liking it. Now I think I wouldn't mind it being on the new album (even though I really doubt it will be).

...wait a second; I didn't mention Oakenfold. Here's an overly-photoshopped pose in which he's wearing a tie underneath his shirt: http://odimusic.net/download/uploads/posts/2008-03/1205776086_paul-oakenfold.jpg
