I wonder if its a CD release of the Live Jam from 12.12.2007?

Steve Hall + Rick and Karl mixing up a variety of stuff i'd imagine. Like DJ Kicks but focussed on Underworld and their musical choices, I assume.

my two links at the top dont provide enough info? oh well.

I was responding as to why peeps weren't getting super excited yet. I agree that I didn't phrase my question properly. What I meant was that I still don't know what to expect out of this. Is it going to be all UW tracks? Is it going to be like a lemonworld performance?

I checked those links; they didn't add any more info than 'Western Tale of Glenn Ford.' and Twitter is blocked at work.

Yea but i mean... why be picky?.. if they say its a collection of music like the Back To Mine series will you really be that disapointed? Or if its a Mix like that of the Misterons mix we had on the site before - will you be disappointed?

Eitherway its looking fairly cool, and considering there is a release of some kind around the corner this will be something to feed the hunger even if it isnt a lot...

...so i am excited even if everyone else isnt..

Now excuse me while i dance and sing in an excited way.. la la la la la wooooo

I didn't particularly care for the Back To Mine release -- forgot it even existed until right at this moment. I do however, love their radio shows especially as of late.

And oh, I'm totally getting this. I personally get excited at even a hint of music from the boys.

I listen to it probably at least once a month or so...
sure there are some bad bits, but - I love "B-Movie" and then that section where it goes from Toots & the Maytals "54-46" all the way through Dead Prez's "Hip Hop"

Any release by Underworld and friends is something worth looking forward to!

I enjoy the radio broadcasts for their, well, live and after-hours aspects. I actually prefer some banter and happy accidents to a slick, overproduced mix or compilation. However, if it's a physical release for sale, as this appears to be, it'll likely be the latter, in the Back-to-Mine vein. Still, let's hope for some unreleased or otherwise remixed UW tracks alongside excellent selections from R&K's collection.

yeah, i was wondering the same. and besides that, it's a 12" print, not a 12" record, it happened the same to me cos i read 'free 12"' (*excitement*) and then i read 'print' (*end of excitment*), which i find great nontheless.

talking about those prints karl is giving away in the contest: to participate, you'll have to send a message titled 'underworld competition' to sales@townsend-records.co.uk. yes, no purchase necessary.

Mixes - always a good way to discover new artists, especially if selected by a favorite artist or Dj and alongside a few recognized tracks.

i like what i hear with the Eno/Hyde collaborative track - i'd buy that separately, for sure. Not sure if i want to purchase the rest, but it's definitely worth a close listen!

This should be interesting. We know how much music is listened by people involved in and around underworld and that is enough to convince me about the eclectic nature of this compilation.

I wonder why the title. Wasn't Karl attacked in Athens?

TheBang
11-01-2009, 08:27 PM
It was Rick that was injured in Athens.

The name of the album, however, is named after one of Karl's paintings (http://www.underworldlive.com/Art.html), which is also the cover of the album. As to whether the naming of the painting has any relation to that fateful concert, I don't know.

Really enjoying listening to this CD - very chilled. I've recently been getting into a bit of jazz lately so this will certainly help me discover some new (to me) artists.

Must admit I was a bit disappointed when I first saw the track-listing as I thought there should be more tracks or maybe a second CD as I think these kind of compilations are good for introducing the listener to new artists (like Trentemollers Copenhagen set).

The 12" sleeve cover is pretty cool and certainly good enough quality to be framed (although I am still hoping to win one of the 'proper' prints!!).

Already looking forward to the next in the series to see what genre it covers.

Ok, honest opinion time - better or worse than "Back to Mine"?
or just different?

Reviews claim a jazzy vibe, with a few exceptions (i have "Oh" on the Life Less Ordinary ST and have heard the snippets of "Beebop Hurry" - hesitant to buy for just this one track that's not really UW). There are so many mixes out there free to discover new tunes and genrs...what's making this one special, other than being handpicked by UW? Interesting mixing/transitions? Is Beebop Hurry super awesome in full glory? Give me reasons to buy this!

It is a bit jazzy, yes but for me it works. I've only heard the promo with "this a promo, go out and buy it you skinflint" interweaved in the audio, but its a great mix. Dont expect a pumping club mix because this aint it (it does reach a dancey clubby point but then goes back downtempo again). The transitions really work and you dont even notice youre going from one song to the next which to me means that its a great selection of tunes put together with some thought.

You missed my point - i want to check this out, but i also want to know what distinguishes it from the many other mixes of unfamiliar artists and tracks. I have a lot of faith in Underworld's inspirations and knack for mixing. I am happy to support them and have spent a lot on their back catalog over the years. But, let's be honest, except for two tracks, one i already have (bought that crap ST just for "Oh") and one that's not really UW, this isn't an UW record. We have been treated to a number of radio broadcasts and special mixes by UW over the years, getting glimpses of what's currently turning their ears and what's inspired them from the past. So what makes this one special and worth the dough?

Thanks, Stimpee, for the good words about the mixing. I'm sure if i hear this in it's entirety, i'll be impressed.

I'll probably pick this up when im back in the UK over xmas. In Utrecht over the last few years, 4 record shops have closed and its getting hard to find things. Free Record Shop isnt a record shop anymore, it seems to sell games and DVDs...

So, i gave this a listen over this weekend...

I was really looking forward to it, it came neatly packaged with a 12" print, and the whole curiosity around this compilation looked tempting.

My first listen, i really struggled to get into it... it wasn't until the fourth or fifth track that i was really listening properly, but still i couldnt really 'access' the music... 'Oh' by Underworld gave a more familiar feel to what i was listening to, but it did sound quite dated.

There was one interesting track by Laurent Garnier, and i really like the fresh sounds of Beepop Hurry.

Im sorry to say, even after another listen in the car, it doesnt do anything for me. Its a good quality selection of tracks, and nicely blended together with a nice flow, but it just doesnt float my boat.

I've been thru this a few times now, and I'm not really feeling it either. Its very well made and that's definitely a plus, but its just not my cup of tea. BH is okay I guess.

Oh does indeed sound dated. I wonder if its because I link it to the movie soundtrack?

Oh does indeed sound dated. I wonder if its because I link it to the movie soundtrack?

I think its because the sound is much more 'early' underworld... more from the 1992/1993 era... it kind of fits in there like big mouth and eclipse.

Oh has the same bassline as the Darren Emerson Underworld remix of Te Quiero by 108 Grand which came out in 1992.

Can't get into this at all. I can't see the point, either. A waste of an Underworld release. And part of a series? Jeez. Beebop Hurry, which I think is the most interesting track by miles, just sounds like one of Karl's pre-show poems read over some random track. Even Oh is weak. Sorry I can't offer any more constructive criticism... music is a visceral thing for me. It is unobtrusive, tho. Good elevator musak.

Dunwho
12-03-2009, 02:41 PM
If you dont like Jazz you wont like the album... there are some other less jazzy tunes on there but its not about sounding like underworld, or anything like that... its just a collection of music they wanted to put together as lovers of music. Thats about it...

I really like it... think some of the songs really got some great stuff going on in them, and i have pretty much not heard of 75% of the artists so its great for me to find out about them and im pretty sure theyd be chuffed if more people were listening to these artists. So in my personal opinion its a great success... so real good music, that they love... that i find interesting and will look into further. A solid release of Oh and of Beebop hurry for all of you who are looking for that kind of thing... but really i think the reason for Oh is because it has a sound and a feeling that is in the other music also - so it kind of shows how they have been influenced by that type of music in the past and Beebop hurry is something that shows how it is effecting him more recently with Eno is australia!

No reason to hate it really.. if you dont like it dont worry, its not an Underworld release.. its just music they like.

No reason to hate it really.. if you dont like it dont worry, its not an Underworld release.. its just music they like.

But it says "Underworld" on the cover. And I found it in the Underworld section in a local indie store. Isn't a link on the blog page enough to point us towards music they like?

Didn't care much for their Back to Mine either, btw. Guess I wouldn't enjoy hanging out at the Lemon... :)

Well, where else would it get filed in the record bins - in "Various Artists" or "Compilations"? And in either case, in Jazz or Dance? I don't see this as a wasted release. UW wanted to put it out physically, that's their right.
As for this and Back to Mine - maybe not everyone's cup of tea. But we've heard plenty of radio broadcasts and links on UWLive to be certain that UW have very eclectic musical tastes & inspirations.
I think t here'd be something for everyone on the Loud Lemon soundsystem (though mostly i'd like to be hearing the boys jam live!)

Maybe this is a way to get some laid back/jazzy vibes out of the system before releasing a monster banging dance record?

I love love love the live broadcasts. There's only been one to date that I don't still listen to (I forget which, but I deleted it off my HD.)

Back 2 Mine wasn't my taste and neither is this release. No biggie. There is TONS of UW material to satisfy me until their next barrage of new tunes.

Im not entirely convinced this is the way the guys really work.. in fact they would probably want to do anything they can to avoid a banging dance record release ;)

i finally recieved mine yesterday. before listening, i read that text that comes in the last page of the booklet. that makes the music have sense. in the spirit of a conceptual work (i know i'm exaggerating here), this is what u/w do and listen before getting their hands into work. the music in it sounds 'underworldish', in a layering, mixing, etc, sense.

and i found myself getting loads of strange stares because people saw a girl listening to jazz all loud in the car. also - 2HB is an amazing track.

So I went into my local record store, you know the routine. Do some browsing here and there of the bands im kind of interested in, then swing by the electronica section to check on Underworld to see how they're doing. Lo and behold! I see and new CD there along with "Oblivion With Bells" and the "Anthology."
Of course im startled by it, "What the fuck is this?!" I didn't know Underworld was coming out with something physical because ive been slacking a lot on keeping up with Underworld, and i refuse to use twitter (i may have to eat these words soon).
After looking up at what it is today im gonna go purchase it, sit down, put on some headphones and just dissolve into it. I'm sure its a keeper. Their "Back To Mine" grew on me something fierce!

IT'S GENIUS!

From the idea of a series like this, to the song choices, to the vinyl hiss throughout, its all beautiful. It was just what i needed.

I can't wait for the others in the series.

Underworld, you never cease to amaze me.

got a sample d/l of the uw promo copy which at just before the 5 minute mark of the first track says in a robotic voice, "This is a promotional copy of Underworld vs The Misterons". at any rate - I'm on track 3 and I've just ordered a physical copy. i haven't purchased a physical CD in a while but this stuff is pretty inspirational... sometimes it's nice to change up the scenery.

Pitchfork just reviewed this...gave it a 4.9 despite claiming to like almost all of the tracks...oops

seems "perception" is more important than the music.

pitchfork overinflates what they like (see radiohead, neutral milk hotel). it seems they don't get underworld, so the score is kinda obvious.

also, see other reviews, like the kid a one.

also also, critics can't make music. so there.

Pitchfork's score for the King of Snake single is quite high.

well whereas I might like a bunch of songs on this mix, the mix did nothing for me. I'm not saying this is why they scored it as they did as I've often thought myself that they didn't 'get' Underworld.

Thought it was a bit funny to see that they considered underworld to be off the radar a bit in recent times.. I guess though if you are a fan you dont have to look farther than their official website to get daily updates on their lives, along with twitter and all that.. for a band that have been touring on and off for over 2 years and working on new material in the mean time... i would think they are as active as ever...

.. and now new material only just on the horizon??? Shame on you pitchfork... get your act together.

Also with the whole lack of depth to Underworld's record crate thing... I have always been astounded at the varience and peculiarity of a lot of the stuff suggested to us by Karl and Rick on UWLive.com... i would have thought they were very very in touch with new music.. as well as old

Baaaaaah! Im just letting them get on my nerves... now im gonna stick on Athens and have a bit of a sulk ;)

I agree. I'm not sure how much they follow UW's radio shows (if at all) but lack of depth is certainly not a phrase I would use to describe them. Actually, I'd say 'too deep'!

Meh, I'll still love UW no matter what PF says.

nope. perhaps the prints turned out magnificent and they're so attached to them and won't give them out?

that or they already gave them to the lucky winners. i really wanted one.

Actually just gave this a proper listen for the first time just now and I must say I quite like it, even though I don't consider myself a jazz fan. The whole thing is pretty great on a lazy sunday morning. I think my favourite is the Moodyman track, and of course the Karl Hyde/Eno collab.

in case anyone was wondering about the print contest - it actually took place and the prints were given away.
