Hi everyone--
I'm losing my mind trying to track down a copy of this book. I've been looking for years, and thought I'd finally take this quest to the boards.
Does anyone have any idea where to find a copy? Advice, help, anything? Do you have an extra you'd like to sell?
And those of you who have the book, how do you like it?
its like an oxford english dictionary, but ripped up and re-stuck.

According to this article (http://www.chinashopmag.com/2009/08/born-in-the-underworld/), there were only 3000 printed and are long sold out. Good luck though.

TBH, I've never seen one on the secondary market, and I was looking for a while. It's really a matter of finding someone who wants to sell one first, and then how much they'll let it go for.

i dont want to be too negative (ha ha)..
but anyone that bought this book, and is selling it,
must really be hurting for money...
why would anyone want to sell it????
that said, i have most of the other books from tomato,
and will be selling those, just as part of a collection..
and NO, i don't have a copy of this one..

heh. not hurting for money at all, just am not a 'collector', and in fact am not a big fan of owning 'stuff'. That being said, it would have to be a great offer to bother selling it cause I do really like it.

I work in rare books and it's really funny how the market changes based on very arbitrary decisions. Basically, in my opinion, a book is worth however much someone will buy it for. However, it takes only one jackass to list a book on eBay for 5x its price to screw up the whole market. Lets say you all bought your Bellies (which is what I'm calling this silly book from now on!) for around $75US---while in my opinion a good resale price would be around $150, what happens when somebody throws a copy on eBay and asks for $500? Even though it won't sell, you'll likely think, "damn, this could be worth $500!" and probably raise your prices.
I've been amused by this-- here's a book I could walk to Soho and buy tomorrow for $850US.
http://cgi.ebay.com/TASCHEN-THE-BOOK-OF-OLGA-SOLD-OUT-ARTIST-PROOF-100_W0QQitemZ300357639073QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_Def aultDomain_0?hash=item45eeb5dba1
Now, what happens when this sells? This seller sold one a while ago for $1500. Forget the $2500 on the listing--is it even worth $1500, if I could just buy it tomorrow for around half that?
...anyways, enough rant! Who knows what anythings worth, right???

Exactly. As with most collectibles, it's worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it.

I dropped them a line asking if they could ship internationally, and yes they do, if you order by credit card and choose the right mail option - so I've finally been able to order 'Belly' after all these years!
The mail I got back was very helpful, with a pdf explaining very clearly which information to put in each box, which (with a little help from google translate) was exactly the hand-holding I needed for the japanese-only order form.

For those of you getting this, I'd be interested in knowing if it comes with a photo (one of the 500 Ltd. Edition), or if it says anything about being a reprint/second print (possibly reprinted just for Karl's art exhibit?).
Lx_Nen

... and it's arrived! Luckily, I had no problems with UK customs (I think they worked out it was a book, which is zero-rated for VAT).
It's not one of the 500 as far as I can tell, which means there were more than just 500 made. It's in mint condition, but nothing identifies it as a second printing, it might just have been well stored for 7 years.
I'm guessing it *might* be a reprint, as it came with a nice bonus of 2 A4 flyers for the 'what's going on in your head when you're dancing' exhibition, but no photo. Another possiblity is that the print run was a bit over 500, only 500 were sold back in 2003, and the rest of the run was stored for future sale when an art exhibition happened?
If anyone at UW central is reading this and knows that there were only 500, and it should have had a photo, feel free to drop me a line :-)

from the tomato site:
In the Belly of St. Paul
'In the Belly of St. Paul' is the second collaborative book by Karl and John that is, 'in theory', part of a continuing project to typographically transliterate our experiences of cities/places that we know and love.
'In the Belly of St. Paul' collates Karl's nocturnal wanderings as snapshots of our London.
It is also the first book to be published by Underworld Print (2003).
The limited edition of 3000 has now run out.

I think it's just that the first 500 were signed and had a photo, and that there were more than 500 books originally made

A couple weeks ago - on the subject of books - I was in The Strand in New York and found a copy of Bareback. They had a second copy still there - about $18. Not sure how difficult this is to find - but I'd had some trouble - so I snapped it up (slightly scuffed cover and all).
Just thought I'd mention it (thought I'd already posted this here, but realized I hadn't - hence the delay between purchase and mention LOL).

I finally managed to pick up a copy off UK ebay last week for £30. There are a couple of slightly damaged pages but I'm happy as I had a nice surprise when I opened it and found that it is a signed copy - number 253. I've spent a good few days trying to find the web page with the pictures that people got in their copy uploaded as it didn't include the picture. Unfortunately the picture from this book hasn't been uploaded but it made me wonder if anyone on here owned my copy previously and if so do you still have the picture? I know it's a long shot but I'm just intrigued to see what the picture was!

Hello all... if anyone is still looking for a copy of In The Belly Of St. Pauls, I recently bought this:
https://www.amazon.sg/Belly-Saint-Paul-BRUP001/dp/B00BIX2HXQ
They don't deliver to UK, but I arranged for my landlord in Singapore to purchase it and he bought it to me during a visit in January (and then he promptly repossessed his house, hahah! Swings and roundabouts...)
It's a high quality, great condition copy, I'd be interested to know if this is a reprint or an original (most likely the former, I guess, considering it's still available to purchase..)
Anyway, S$31.00 is about 18 quid, so I'm very glad i bagged one, even if it is a reprint (bootleg?).
TheBang

It's actually being sold by Amazon Japan, so you can find it directly listed here, for a little bit cheaper:
https://www.amazon.co.jp/-/en/KARL-HYDE-WARWICKER-Underworld-tomato-project/dp/B00BIX2HXQ
Japan is where all new copies have been available for, like, almost 20 years. I'm not sure if they did a second printing. Maybe. I don't think it's a bootleg.
