found a copy sitting on the server at school and couldn't resist watching 15 min. or so of the film which was in its original japanese form. seeing it reminided me of a sigur ros song in the sense of the language barrier hiding any direct translation yet, its so compelling at the same time. it feels like one bad-ass cinematic with the all the energy that was lacking from the spirits within. a gorgeous color pallet and lighting matched with fluid animation to give a great sense of clean continuity.

like most peeps, i'm loyal to the VII narrative and i'm happy to say this is a solid extention of one of the greatest stories ever told in gaming.

my dvd came today and had to watch it immediately. ummm i have to say i wasn't that impress with it. the visual is so damn beautiful, the characters look fantastic. the fight scenes were intense and fast pace, at times it feels like dragon ballz-ish. everything was good, except for the fact that it feels like this is made only because squaresoft gave into the millions of fanboys around the world. it feels like whole bunch of cg sequences in a final fantasy game sewn together. the story doesn't feel very compelling, half the time i don't really know whats going on, because i haven't played this game in ages. i can't imagine someone who hasn't played the game watch this for anything other than the action sequences.

i'm mildly disappointed, but i'm not really complaining that much. its nice little thing that squaresoft has given us. besides, FFVII was shit to begin with anyways. :D

I've never been much of a video game guy, but I really loved the visual design of Final Fantasy 7, and I always used to watch my brother play it just because it looked cool. I hear so many good things about this movie from fans of the game, but I don't know ANYTHING about the plot of the game, and I'm worried that it won't make a lick of sense to me. I still want to see it, again because of the visual design, but I'm not sure what to expect.

There is a 2 minute narration summary of the events of the game at the start of the movie, so it should at least make a little sense.

However, the "OH MY GOD IT'S XXXXXXX! I REMEMBER XXXXXXX!" factor will be lost to you, which was half the fun for me.

Still though, the greatest piece of digital animation to date, well worth the viewing for the eye candy alone.
