View Full Version : Apple + Underworld (iDrum Underworld Edition)
BrotherLovesDub
07-16-2009, 11:43 AM
from the press release:
To celebrate the release of the full underworld back catalogue for the first time on iTunes, Underworld, in partnership with cutting edge developer iZotope, bring you an amazing iPhone iDrum application containing some of the most famous tunes from Underworld's juke box of techno classics.
Featuring tracks from all Underworld's albums and including "Born Slippy", "Two Months Off" and "Cowgirl" the application allows the user to remix, re-sequence and reconstruct 12 Underworld tunes and also features a piece created by the band themselves exclusively for the application.
With specially commissioned artwork from Tomato's John Warwicker the application is the closest you'll get to dropping the kick drum on "Born Slippy" without getting on stage with the guys yourself. In celebration, Underworld are giving away a special live version of "Born Slippy" recorded at Brixton Academy and have announced North American dates this August, including (technology permitting!) the worlds first FREE live audio-visual broadcast to the iPhone on Friday August 7th 2009 as Underworld continue their series of incredible live broadcasts at The Fox Oakland Theater.
Direct from the Fox Theatre in Oakland and accessible through Underworldlive.com check out the bands legendary show featuring some of the biggest dance hits of the last 15 years and maybe some future hits for 2010.
This is completely free and all you need is a computer with Quick Time installed on a broadband connection or an iPhone on a wi-fi connection running iPhone 3.0 or higher.

This doesnt look like its been announced yet, but youve got a great scoop there!

Underworld is unleashing its entire back catalog via iTunes and to celebrate it has partnered with developer iZotope to unveil its iDrum iPhone app, which allows users to remix 12 of the duo's tracks, including "Born Slippy," "Cowgirl" and "Two Months Off." As there are two great, separate pieces of news here, I'll respond to them separately:
1. A new Underworld app? And a new Underworld song? :D
Though it may not be on the new album, this is great news. Since it's being written for a drum-synthesizing app, I'd assume it's a pretty high-energy song, which is also great. A lot of their newer songs are very moody and it's been a while since they've made a really good, pounding club track. I wonder if it'll be another Loads of Birds (in treatment, not style) and get released as a bonus track on UW6?
2. 0_0...
W-o-w.
I have never been so happy that California time is 3 hours earlier than EST. I'll be returning from a camping trip on the 7th and it's a 13-hour car ride home, so it'd be hard to view it any time sooner that 11 P.M. Plus, it'll be like a late movie night for all the East Coast fans. I promise that, if the circumstances work out, I'll be recording the audio for the concert, so if they drop any mind-blowing new stuff and decide we can't download it for ourselves then at least we'll have audio (I'm not promising, however, that it won't be without skips. Wiretap is a sometimes unnervingly accurate recorder, and any delays in receiving the broadcast will be accounted for on the recording).
If any of you west-coast Dirts are lucky enough to be near the cameras, give the rest of us a shout-out. We'll be listening.

If it's a drum based song that's coming out via this app, I'll be the first person to guess that it's going to be "You Do Scribble."

If they ever got processed, I'll happily send money over for a copy!

Explain, please? I looked into this a little bit. To me, it looks like the EP version is longest at 8:10. The Wipeout 2097 soundtrack (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wipeout_2097_The_Soundtrack_(album)) version is 5:00. Or maybe 6:09 here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lb9qVBHYh2M).

There are three versions -

This seems like a great opportunity to sell all those rare tracks that are so hard to find, at least on CD. Not to mention the Live Here Now recordings for those who were unable to collect them all. I don't see why UW would not avail themselves of iTunes' full potential, seems like it'd be printing money for them.

I'm not sure who else would be taking a share, be that JBO or V2 or whatever. Selling on Underworldlive.com is a better option of course for money going directly to the artist but whatever, I'm am sure that its not as simple as it seems.

itunes is a piece of crap
itunes store is poorly designed

I can download a 60 minute 320kbps Mp3 album from amazon in 3 minutes
same album from itunes takes 20 min (gets hung up on processing after download is completed) and its only 256kbps and in a non ubiquitous format !

Ha! I, too, have bad vibes for Apple, because although they make a decent product and have the market cornered, are just a little too snobbish about it for my tastes. But anyway, i don't DL mp3s much, but when i do, i'll take what i can get. It's still very disposable in my mind. So if Amazon or iTunes or UWlive is the route to get the tune, great. Fine to hear, but i still like something more permanent. CDs maybe a dying breed, but are those rare early 90's EPs and singles really gonna get re-released in whatever the next format is (if there is something new and physical?).
Sorry, rant over. Bring on the goods via iTunes!
industri_studios
07-20-2009, 07:12 AM
I'm skeptical a new physical format is coming... though I could (eventually) see things like "complete discography" Blue Ray discs or something... in lossless format or whatever... but I do think we who appreciate a physical thing are the dying breed here.
However, many things will still be pressed on vinyl for the imminent future, I think, since it's almost entirely a niche market already... so, yay for that! [smirk]

i have to agree with you..
maybe it's because i use pc's (or so i've been told)
i had an ipod touch for about 1 week, and gave it away.
(seriously)...i just could not use it, without a keyboard,
i was hindered greatly..
but iTunes kept crashing, deleting my playlists several times,
and just generally being sluggish (on a core 2 duo 1.33 Ghz pc)..
seriously, if they can't get it to work smoothly by now, what's
the point? i managed to find some 3rd party apps to finally
get the tracks moved and working..
but overall, it was too little too late, and i went back to my
palm TX for all my music/video/games etc...

Depsite its bad points, its the market leader and Underworld need to have their music on iTunes. iTunes as an app is different from iTunes as a store. Now theyre offering DRM free mp3s its not too bad. Its not my cup of tea as I still prefer physical product but thats just me, so I cant comment on the prices / quality / speed vs that at Amazon.

he was sorta right tho, as far as music players go there isnt much to complain about itunes for. tho i dont get how someone wouldn't know how to use it. guys it's pretty basic: source folder, play music, make playlists, repeat. maybe you can go bananas and make SMART playlists, maybe you can ask genius to hold your hand if youre feeling boring.
point is, if it plays what i have, what the hell is there to complain about?
King of Snake
07-29-2009, 11:22 AM
saying there's not much to complain about it is different from saying there's nothing out there that does the same things as well or better than iTunes though.

yeah. . thats exactly the problem (might be overlooked if it werent such a resource hog)
#1 gripe - interaction with audio metadata sucks with ITunes:
why do I have to open another window to edit an artist name/track number/album title? I should be able to click and hold mouse over track title and the track should go into edit mode!
dubman
07-29-2009, 01:28 PM
listen, i'm strongly against the mac/pc debacle in general. i think both machines are differently paved avenues leading to the same end, and i can move between both with ease.
but click twice on the song (not double click) and you can edit the title that way too. so BLD still has/had a point.
i have winamp on my pc, it's okay. i end up doing anything i care to in either one.

on a Mac, in iTunes, you can easily edit track titles, etc by clicking it once (to highlight it) then a single click again
and if you press 'ctrl' while clicking you have more options
as far as UW's catalogue being available on iTunes...
I think AT LEAST they should be able to put everything back that was there before (all albums, Crocodile EP, and the Beaucoup Fish singles) ....AND...
all of the tracks that were available on iTunes in different territories (JAL to Tokyo EP, those two remixes of Beautiful Burnout [rick's mix & the mark knight dub])
...now it'd be nice if they had the old singles, promo releases (like Rick's Bungalow version of KOS) and remixes of other artists, but I'm not holding my breath

Unfortunately, all it really did for me was prove to me that 3g speeds around here are rubbish, so watching a live gig on my phone is still a way off being practical.

WOW...
there are actually FEWER releases on iTunes now than there was about a year ago...
now - yes, I did have everything on there before
but I mean... come on!
there used to be the BF & AHDO singles
I wanna say even stuff from earlier periods as well
now - there's just the main albums and a condensed version of the digital release of Crocodile
(edit)
the only "new" thing on iTunes is the "Alligator Version" of the Crocodile video
which - if memory serves me... wasn't available to download (on iTunes) before UW's catalogue was removed
this really just seems to be a bad marketing gimmick
like... "hey guys, we can make a buzz around you by removing you're catalogue from the music store... then just before you do a short primarily West-Coast-Only... we'll make the SAME stuff available again. But get this... we'll make it seem like it's a HUGE deal!"

Using this and slowly getting the hang of it.
Basically allows you to select a slice of a song and mess with it. Can single out parts of the bit your working on so it doesnt become a mess or you can use the preset stuff to gradually build up and mix stuff in like Rick does.

You can also add any element from the other tracks to any song. Put the Jumbo 909 on Vox Jam with the snares from Pearls Girl. It's actually a bit more involved than I was thinking it would be. Hours of fun.
how do you do this?

Help!
Being curious (and an idiot at times) I saw a trash can icon above my little dootle around with 'Nuxx'...I pressed it thinking I was binning my shitty mix, but appear to have binned the entire fucking track!!!!
Do I now have to buy the entire thing again? Even more stuopidly, this is one of the only apps i did not back-up on the lappy between the purchase time and the pressing of this orrible icon with my febrile finger!

This is something some of you were waiting to hear. It also answers the question as to whether they own their catalog.
http://www.urb.com/features/1598/UnderworldInterview.php
URB: You’re also re-releasing your back catalog. That must’ve been a massive project.
KH: We’ve been fortunate to own our catalogue from day one of this group, and that’s… that’s a smile. We’re starting with the albums, then we’ll roll out all the twelves, then the singles.

i've been also playing with the iDrum, which has been installed in my coworker's iPod (since i don't have one). so far i've been playing with beautiful burnout. i wish the workarea was bigger, since 16 patterns is a little too short. i guess it's better to make sections out of it and then move them to the computer and then place everything together.

I don`t own an iPhone or an iPod Touch, but it`s only $4.99, so I finally took
the leap and bought it this weekend to see what I could "do" with it! Within 30
minutes I had all the files extracted, found the "Samples" folder, and had all
audio converted to .wav files!
Once I got this stuff into Logic, the real fun began :D

Sounds like $4.99 well-spent.

I`m still constantly toying with a more powerful version of an Underworld
mixer in Flash, and this piece of software has been both a blessing and a
curse! The blessing is the nice sample base I now have for the mixer -
thanks Rick! The curse is that it is similar to what I`ve spent countless
hours working on. Don`t get me wrong, I think this thing is awesome, and
I commend the developers at iZotope for making something I think many
of us could have only dreamed of a few years back. However, I`ve
already set my mind on finishing the task that I started a year ago, and at
the end of the day, both applications are/will be different: the iDrum is a
sequencer, whereas the DTM will simulate Rick`s live setup.
I just needed to bitch a little!
Ok, I guess I can`t bitch about those awesome samples :p

ok,
this is partially related, but i'll start a new thread in
craft once i have more information.
i'm getting a microsoft remix cover for the surface tablet:
========================================
http://www.surfaceremixproject.com/
they are not on sale, but you can get them on ebay:
=====================================
http://i.ebayimg.com/t/Exclusive-Microsoft-Surface-Music-Kit-Unreleased-/00/s/MTYwMFgxMjAw/z/NO8AAOxyUrZStgms/$_12.JPG
so i'll try integrating the idrum samples into it.
also, i tried the idrum PC application, and while cool for making beats,
it looks like a pain, if you're trying to create songs on it, or on the
iphone.. no wonder there aren't that many remixes out there.
also, i'm using acid pro, which is a lot better for making songs using the
samples, but i'm having some issues with some samples not being the
correct tempo or key.
anyways, will have a lot to play around with once i get it.

As I understand it, just sync purchases and apps to a pc or Mac and use something like 7zip, winrar or unarchiver to extact them. I’m looking for this app at the moment, had it on my old iPod under my old email and apple account at the time but got shafted when PSN got hacked years ago, can’t get at the app anymore.
If you’re happy to share the app I’ll unzip it and ping the files over?
